Leesburg was a thriving town after gold was discovered at the Leesburg Mine on July 16, 1866. The mining town was named for General Robert E. Lee because most of the settlers were Southerners. In its prime, Leesburg had a population of over 6,500. To add more to the national trend of the time, Grantsville was a small settlement adjacent to Leesburg. Eventually, it was just known as Leesburg.
