www.MarshallCattleCompany.com Dear Customers and Friends, We’d like to extend a personal invitation to you to attend our annual bull sale. Lorna and I can’t begin to tell you how much we appreciate your investment in our genetics in the past, and how grateful we are to have the opportunity to earn your business in the future. The drought has weighed heavily on everyone. This year’s sale is dedicated to making sure everyone enjoys some good food, good fellowship, good cattle, and good horses. So whether you need a bull or a ranch gelding or not, please join us for some wonderful fellowship with fellow cattlemen!

We are especially excited about this year’s sale because there are a whole lot of changes occurring with our operation and the industry in general. For the first time ever, we will be hosting the bull sale at the ranch. We are going to have an exceptional meal by grill master, Mick Livingston. The bulls are going to be displayed in a way where it is easy to evaluate them, plus every bull will be videoed and the bull sale will held with the videos playing on the big screens. We have been to several of these sales and we believe it is the future, and a much more low stress way to evaluate the bulls.
Additionally, we will be selling a really top notch set of Angus and Sim-Angus registered heifers along with a group of commercial heifers out of registered cows, and AI sired by some of the industry’s leading bulls. These heifers are developed like they are going to be bred and make cows, not to sale. We like the heifers to weigh about 825 pounds when we breed them and that is how these heifers are being developed, in their working clothes. Also, for the first time ever, we are offering a select group of ranch horses from the very best hands in Eastern Colorado. Horses are a passion of ours and integral to our operation. We have some great friends bringing you some outstanding horses. You simply won’t find horses bred like this, and ridden by top hands like this anywhere else. We are excited about this year’s bulls. We have culled deeper than ever before because of the drought and have larger sire groups for those of you wanting to buy ½, ¾, and full brothers. These bulls are not fed like any other seedstock operation, they are lean, mean, grass eating, breeding machines designed for longevity. You will have to readjust your sights when you look at the bulls. We probably overdue it, and in the future we will likely develop the bulls to better express their genetic potential, but we will always error on the side of feeding them too little versus too much. They stem from a set of cows that are commercially managed, rigorously culled and expected to work for us in eastern Colorado. Come see the best set of bulls we have ever offered from a genetic standpoint.

Disposition Score The bulls are scored on a system from 1 (very calm, walk out of the chute) to 5 (easily excited, nervous, move around a lot in the chute) each time they are ran through the chute or worked. The score printed is the average of all the observations for that animal. The 4 and 5s have been culled. Calving Ease Designation Calving ease is a primary focus of our breeding program. With nearly ¾ of our bulls in the sale qualifying as heifer bulls according to Angus Association guidelines, we wanted to provide our rating system, based on actual data, pedigree, EPDs and experience. HHHH A no miss, sleep through the night, and tag live calves in the morning type of bull. HHH Superior calving ease, should be an excellent choice for heifers HH A bull that qualifies as a heifer bull by industry standards. H We recommend these bulls for use on cows.
Birth Weight (Act BW) Weaning (WW) Ratio and Yearling (YW) Ratio are a direct comparison of one calf to all others in his contemporary group. A ratio of 100 is average. Embryo Transplant calves will have “ET” in place of a ratio. IMF Ratio and REA Ratio are a direct in-herd comparison of the IMF (intramuscular fat or marbling) and REA (ribeye area) as measured via ultrasound technology. Adj. Rib Fat is expressed in inches as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs, adjusted to a year of age.
Percentile Rank This percentage tells you where the bull ranks against all other non-parent bulls in the breed for the given trait. 10% means the bull would rank among the top 10% of all non-parent bulls.
-2-
Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

This set of fall bulls were developed a little differently than most, they were raised on forage with protein supplementation, until a year of age. We put them on a roughage based straw and distillers ration in early December. The fall bulls were ultrasounded outside of the age range. Their ratios are calculated based on actual data. These bulls will not only breed more cows, but they will last.

Warning -- Good cattlemen will not miss this bull, so if you are looking for the bargain of the sale, this is probably not the bull. The Final Products are exceptionally long, with a tremendous amount of muscle and are just super sound from a structural standpoint. This bull has been one of my favorites for quite some time. And his dam is a picture perfect SuperMama!
Love the mating and love the bull. He had a slow start and got sick prior to weaning, but has come on. He brings the calving ease, length, eye appeal and carcass that is typical of Daybreak, but with more softness. -6-

Everyone loved the Relevance’s last year, the reports have been outstanding. Daybreak growth with depth, fleshing ability, and marbling. His dam is a true SuperMama, she’s 11 and still producing the right kind. She is a past donor for us.

Calving ease, calving ease, calving ease. For generations. Absolute guaranteed no miss heifer bull. -7-
We have had some good flushes in the past, but nothing compares with our two feature flushes this year. The 3008 cow is the definition of a SuperMama, real thickness and as deep as you can make one. We are using Hoover Dam heavily because of his superior disposition and because of his unique combination of calving ease and muscle in a moderate package. These bulls are really, really, really thick, and deep. If you want to build a great cowherd buy this flush. Lots 20-23 are nearly identical you will be impressed with the consistency as well as the kind. Dam has produced 6@104 BW, 6@106 WW, 4@109 YW, 10@105 IMF, and 10@97 REA.

Yes, we plan to continue to use Hoover Dam heavily! Out of an absolutely super Game Day daughter, this bull boasts as good as birth to yearling spread as any bull in the sale, with one of the highest REA EPDS. A bull to make SuperMama’s. I won’t say much more than this is the kind of bull we are trying to raise.

As good of combination of marbling and REA as you can find. His mother has an exceptional production record. A beef bull with rib and muscling. This bull did everything well. Backed by a pathfinder cow that stem from the dam of Plowman.
A Word about Calving Ease & Birth Weight
Lot
The Angus breed has done an unmatched job of utilizing technology to identify and propogate cattle that defy genetic antagonisms. For example, today’s beef producer doesn’t have to sacrifice growth in order to have low birth weight, easy calving cattle. We know that the average age of the beef producer is rising and that most cattlemen are running more cows with less labor. And a live calf is the most important trait to producer profitability, without it nothing else works. That is why in our program, we put so much emphasis on creating easy calving cattle that perform throughout the production chain. And while we don’t like to think of ourselves as old yet, we have certainly grown past the romance of getting up in the middle of the night to check cows. Our fall cows are checked once a day to weigh and tag calves. Our spring cows are only checked at night in the case of inclement weather. While we love what we do, our cows work for us, not us for them, we expect them to calve and mother up in an unassisted fashion. If not, you will likely see them at the local sale barn.

One has to scour the sale catalogs to find this level of calving ease, or this amount of growth, or the kind of balanced carcass genetics this bull has, but it is nearly impossible to find it in the same bull. You will mark him in your catalog, whomever owns him will be making a very good investment in the future of their cowherd. A bull who excels in the economically relevant traits of beef production. All our bulls are green, but this is a bull who will look good on sale day and great down the road. Take notice!
He is the last Hoover Dam in the sale, but it just speaks to the consistency and quality of this sire group. I can’t tell you how excited we are about this bull’s dam, his REA EPD is for real. His mom is as stout and pretty, and as beautiful uddered as they come. We are looking for big things for her down the road. The 0154 cow is owned by Justis. Those of you have been attending our sales know, that Lorna has a tendency to let the kids pick from some heifers that I’d rather keep for myself. If one of the kids own the cow, you can count on the fact that we think she is pretty good.

One of the youngest bulls in the sale and an ET calf that was on a weak recip. This bull’s dam has one of our best production records and best SuperMama phenotypes. This is a bull that does as good of job of combining calving ease and growth and the calves will absolutely pound the scales down in the fall. Look at his numbers. 30 days of more age or put this bull in a better feeding program and he’d probably be leading off the sale.

The dam of this flush is one of the up and coming cows in our program. She sports a excellent production record and flawless phenotype. We think that adding the power of Final Product makes a tremendous package. These ETs were a little behind, raised in Wyoming in severe drought. These are Final Product sons with power and muscle but with better carcass and no miss calving ease.

The Feeding Game Lorna and I are both A personality types. One night a friend from Kansas was playing Scrabble with our family. After surviving the game with the Marshall family, she made the statement that our children had inherited the “competitive” gene from both mom and dad, they were homozygous competitive. Bottomline, winning is more fun than losing, so if you are going to do something, do it to the best of your ability. Much of the seedstock business is a feeding game, fat is great at covering up a lot of faults. It is also expensive and detrimental to the longevity and fertility of bulls and the fertility and productivity of females. We have seen this in our own operation, particularly in developing yearling heifers. So if there is one game we are going to lose at, it will be the feeding competition. We know our customers appreciate it long-term because of the feedback we get on the longevity of our bulls.

A calving ease bull that provides an outcross, maternally oriented pedigree for a lot of our customers that are wanting to make nice replacement females.
I continue to buy MCC bulls because they calve easy and the calves grow. I like the fact that they are on the cutting edge of genetics, I know they’ve done their homework. I’ve always been satisfied with the results

Kelly is a long-time customer, that has purchased 2 or more bulls every year for over ten years and is an excellent student of the data. Kelly’s calves have topped the market every year that I know of, because the cattle perform in the feedyard and on the rail.

A young, natural calf out of our donor, 7159, who is the dam of Lots 40-43. We flushed her twice and she bred back a little late in the calving season. Quite simply the best EPD package in the sale and when you factor in age, possibly the bull in the sale for the economically relevant traits of beef production. He is too young for his yearling data to get adjusted, but he would have ratioed very high YW, MARB, and REA! Circle him.

Genomic results are a way to enhance predictability of current selection tools, to achieve more accuracy on EPDs for younger animals, and to characterize genetics for traits where it’s difficult to measure the animal’s own performance for the trait (i.e. carcass traits in breeding stock or maternal traits in bulls).

Bulls with the HD50K logo have an individual 50K DNA test result impacting their EPDs. This means that in addition to the pedigree, performance and progeny information that are used in the calculation and reporting of Angus EPDs, genomic test results have also been incorporated into the EPD, and thus these individuals have added predictability or accuracy.

GE-EPDs are important because they make use of the results from the DNA test in addition to all other sources of information to provide added accuracy and reliability to the animal’s EPD. In fact, depending on the trait, GE-EPDs on unproven bulls have the same amount of accuracy as if they had already sired 8-20 calves.

Absolutely one of my favorite pedigrees here, we didn’t use much Mytty In Focus, simply because we have so many daughters, but this bull is stacked for calving ease and maternal excellence. I just love the rib, muscle and the mature size this bull represents. Pounds or great females this bull will deliver. If you haven’t used a lot of Mytty In Focus or In Focus sons, this is a bull that needs to be near the top of your list. Balanced trait genetics at its best.

Our only Stimulus son in the sale. His dam is one of the most attractive cows on the place. We have sold Simmental sired embryos by 7104. This bull should be a bonafide cow maker.
A bull that will work really well on a set of cows, where profitability is the main goal.

g in r e f f O s u g n A x Our Simmental We love Angus cattle and believe they will always be the foundation of the commercial cow/calf industry. We also understand that hybrid vigor or heterosis can be a powerful tool that contributes to the profitability of our customers. Our Sim/Angus program is still relatively limited in size, but like our Angus program it will be growing. Using a composite bull is the easy way to take advantage of breed complementarity and maintain heterosis. So why SimAngus? We believe in using the best tools available to breed better cattle, and currently the American Angus Association and the American Simmental Association have the two largest databases in the world, with the most animals and the most traits evaluated. Angus excels in terms of calving ease, low birth weights, post weaning gain and carcass merit. Among the Continental breeds Simmental enjoys nearly an identical status.
WS Rolex X12
Crossbreeding works. Traditional crossbreeding programs, however, have largely been colossal failures. Wild swings in breed percentages, the difficulty of maintaining intense records, multiple breeding pastures and the like simply made most crossbreeding systems too difficult and problematic. The use of composite bulls allows you to capture heterosis with all the headaches. We believe that these bulls will become a valuable tool in your arsenal for hitting industry targets and increasing efficiency. SimAngus bull’s EPDs are on a Simmental Basis and cannot be compared directly to Angus EPDs. Hybrid breed averages: CED

50 AN/50 SM. Ollie has been one of the most popular bulls in the Simmental breed for quite some time, simply because they are stout and good. The bulls add muscle and pounds, the daughters are exceptional. A bull that will provide muscle, growth and maternal strength. Calving ease with an API in the top 20% of the breed.
50 AN/50 SM. I absolutely love this bull. The Sharper Images have been one of the most popular sire groups this spring, because they are good. This is probably the most complete Sim/Angus bull we have raised. He is a prime example of why we have added the Sim/Angus program for our customers. He is attractive, muscular, moderate, and sounds as you can make one with that much muscle.

Troy is my friend, but that’s not why I buy his bulls. I have been using Marshall bulls for 6 years on my herd and have become addicted to their calving ease. The cattle grow, gain and grade well. I need all those aspects working together. The best way for me to redeem the investment in my herd and bulls is to finish the calves and market on the grid. Doing so has let me see in terms of $ how my cattle compare. The results motivate me to stay with Marshalls.
Granddam of Lot 83
I have been replacing my cows with my Marshall calves as rapidly as possible. So when I bought replacement heifers to breed, calve and resell, I decided Daybreak sons were the right choice because of the calving ease, EPDs and his local and regional reputation. Beyond those factors, I have proven Daybreak genetics to myself on my farm. I can represent the pairs with confidence.
- Bill Witt
Bill is a good customer, I have always enjoyed discussing the bulls with him, because he has a plan and vision for where he wants to take his program. Bill has 120 bred heifers for sale. They are a really nice set of black heifers, and they will be calving for 50 Days starting the 1st of February. All the heifers were bred to nice set of MCC Daybreak sons. Give us a call if you are interested in purchasing a package or the whole set.

We believe in the MCC program and have seen the proof in our cowherd. We bought into MCC’s program because of the combination of calving ease and growth and their emphasis on maternal traits, but the cattle have excelled in the feed yard as well. Even during this time of high feed costs and high calf prices it has paid to retain ownership, because of their advantages in feed conversion and the premiums we receive on the grid. The closeouts and the cowherd only tell part of the story. MCC genetics have helped us eliminate a lot of problems that we use to believe was just part a normal part of being in the cow business.
We really love the fleshing ability, rib shape and structure in the Hoover Dams. This heifer will make a tremendous cow. Her dam records 5@102 nursing ratio.

Lorna has protested selling this heifer! She has jumped through every hoop, writes impeccable EPDs, is built like a SuperMama, and her ratios are some of the best of our 2012 heifer crop. Her dam, 6022 is a pathfinder and one of the most productive daughters of our first donor, an awesome EXT daughter, 932. A full brother sold to Kenneth Rose for $6,000 in our 2011 sale and performed just like his sister. - 23 -

As cattle and feed prices rise the difference in value between the best and worst calves also rises. Therefore, your selection for performance and carcass value becomes extremely important to the marketability of your calves. Using a modern average of 6.1 to 1 feed to gain ratio on steers, a 10% improvement would have roughly meant a difference of $65 per head on 600 lb. of feedlot gain in 2012. That 10% is all the difference in the world! Furthermore, packers continue to pay more for quality carcasses. With a high of $20/ cwt. and a low of $2/cwt. the 2012 Choice/Select price spread averaged $10/cwt. Add the $3.89/cwt. Certified Angus Beef速 brand premium on top of that and we move cattle above the market by $63/head on an 850 lb. carcass. 100% Choice and 50% CAB速 acceptance is a realistic goal with superior genetics. If we strive to breed for cattle that will function at the ranch and also satisfy the needs of our customers downstream then demand will take care of itself. - Paul Dykstra

Lots of people wonder how we ended up in Burlington, Colorado. It’s a great story and if you don’t know it, we would love to share it with you. But Lorna and I have discussed numerous times, that as we travel the US, this is one of the tougher environments that we could have settled in. Has it tested our will . . . yes, have we rethought our strategy several times . . .yes. When we started almost 20 years ago, we acquired genetics from some of the top operations in the US – Fink, Gardiner, Gartner Denowh. We flushed those cows to make daughters that many of our best cow families today go back to. Along the way, we have tried to identify and buy some top genetics. But most of the time those genetics have been raised in a much more feed friendly environment than what we run. Many times those expensive cows weaned light calves, didn’t breed back, etc. They are certainly good cows, they just didn’t fit our environment. All but 1 bull in this year’s sale is out of a cow that not only originated at MCC, but is at least 3 generations of MCC breeding on the cow side. There is definitely a genetic x environment interaction in running cows and we simply are more comfortable that our genetics are uniquely suited and selected to perform in our environment and those of our customers.

Ranch Horses Lots A-G
Drake Johnson of Wray, Colorado is a multiple World, National and Futurity Champion Trainer, specializing in reining and working cowhorse. Drake is an AQHA and NRHA judge and specializing in brokering horses of all disciplines. These horses have been selected for your consideration in conjunction with Dennis Walter, PRCA roping professional of Wray, CO.
Horses are a vital part of our operation. Yet, they are a totally different enterprise than the cattle. The cattle must provide economically for our family. The horses certainly do a job, but they have done far more than that, they have helped raise what I think are some pretty good kids. I’m not sure I could put a value on what they mean to our family. I grew up riding some pretty common horses, and while I wouldn’t trade those days for anything, I’ve also learned the difference of riding a good horse. The kind of horse that not only gets the job done, but makes getting it done a true pleasure. My life goals are pretty simple – build a great cowherd, own a great horse, have a good dog, and love a great woman. We are blessed to have ridden some pretty good ponies, not that different from the cattle side, it starts with the right genetics and then managing them right. We are blessed in our area to have a few really good hands, and it got us to thinking it would be nice to offer some truly unique ranch horses. Horses that have had the miles and seasoning that one can only get from working on a ranch, but also had the right kind of foundation and breeding. We are honored to have several of these really good hands share some of these horses. These are pretty athletes, who are truly broke, and who have been ridden by the best hands in Eastern Colorado. If you are looking for that one really good ranch horse, you will not find any better.

2012 was an awesome year for the J-Team. Justis and JJ made the Reining Shootout and placed 14th overall in Working Cow Horse at the 2012 AQHYA World Show. They were 8th in the 13 and under division at the NRHA Futurity and had several youth and open wins along the way in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
Wyatt got a new partner this fall. Tin Top Kat is an own son of High Brow Cat out of a Peptoboonsmal mare. Wyatt and “Kitty” are competing in reining and working cow horse together. They had some awesome cow horse runs at the Colorado State Fair and placed 15th in the 14-18 division at the NRHA Futurity. The great thing about both of these horses is that they work on the ranch and in the show pen.

The next lot comes from Setting Sun Ranch LLC, Naomi Bancroft and Tanwy Fye. Setting Sun Ranch is built on hard work and a strong foundation. We believe that the first thirty days of a horses training is the determining factor whether it will be a trustworthy partner or a problem horse. Our research and training methods are based off of the instruction of Clinton Anderson and Chris Cox. Both of these programs instill the importance of natural horsemanship, where foundation is the key to building a willing partner. We take pride in getting our horses quiet and respectful on the ground which carries over to their performance under the saddle. We also include a mixture of reining, reining cow horse, and ranch horse methods. Naomi Bancroft is our head trainer. She is an up and coming trainer in the equine world. Growing up on a small cow calf operation in eastern Colorado, she can do just about anything off the back of a horse and willing to help anyone learn a better way to communicate with their horse. Through timing, feel, and understanding the way a horse thinks she will help you became a better horseman. In 2013 we are showing our stud, Meradas Golden Rey, and he is currently setting 1st in the CRCA.

He is easy to get along with and has an easy going disposition for checking cattle and riding lessons, but also has the speed to gather one up and will track up and give you the shot. Dozer is a great horse for all of your ranching needs that just about anyone can ride and get along with.
Lot F is a 10 year old Appaloosa gelding that does everything but the dishes. You can head and heel, tie a calf down, and has been used extensively on the ranch. He is bomb proof!!!! He has been started on cowboy mounted shooting and is a horse that anyone can ride, even the dog (might have to watch the preview to believe this).
