After all, it isn’t every day that a nationally known agriculture broadcaster visits. “I didn’t know the demographics before I got here today,” said Trent Loos, “but when I learned that very few of the students, the ag kids, the FFA members, come from a traditional farm, it became more impressive to stand in facilities like this.” Trent Loos broadcasts a daily radio show, 12 | Owasso FFA 2012

out of the ordinary that brought him to speak to FFA students in Owasso, and to broadcast from their classroom.

Loos visited the students because of an impression Owasso FFA student Piper Merritt made on him and

students to be informed about issues and to do a good job of making sure others know the facts about agriculture. He was impressed with the Owasso FFA program and the growth it has experienced over the past decade, especially in a non-traditional suburban community. “We’re at a time when a lot of people in agriculture talk about reaching out and educating the nonfarm his listeners at last year’s state FFA convention. year, Merritt called Loos as a source. A big part of FFA is public speaking and learning about and being able to articulate important issues in agriculture. Loos put Merritt on the spot to deliver her speech on the airwaves for his listeners. “He was like ‘Hi, would you like to be on my radio show?’ So it was a surprise to me, but it was really fun,” says Merritt. Loos and his listeners were so impressed, he promised to visit the chapter. “She launched into that presentation with a tremendous degree of confidence,” Loos said. Not only did he broadcast his show from the Owasso FFA Chapter classroom, Loos also presented Merritt with a newly created award called the “Loos Tales” Merit Award. Merritt was also awarded a gilt she’ll show this year, with the promise of breeding it and giving one of its offspring to another deserving FFA student to show next year. “You want to fulfill your passion and I feel like I’m doing the right thing in going this way,” says Merritt. “I feel God has really blessed me in allowing me to do this.” While in Owasso, Loos challenged Owasso FFA 2012 | 13

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the business community, parents, supporters and students that have formed the vision and blazed the trail for continued success. of one of our nation’s fastest growing communities. But as it turns out, this couldn’t have been a better location. Since the beginning of construction to our present day projects, this facility continues to provide an opportunity to many students that won’t find one of its kind anywhere else. In the 1950s, this very community was home to nearly 300 dairy farms. Agricultural life was the heart and soul of this small, rural Green Country town. Even with Owasso’s growth into a thriving economic Tulsa suburb, the slight change in landscape and its rural roots a distant memory, the Owasso Agricultural Education Program still serves one of the agriculture industry’s most vital roles, which Owasso FFA 2012 | 17

The teenagers’ decision is making a huge difference. The donation provided 8,500 meals to hungry Oklahomans. “Zadie is a wonderful example of how students can make a huge difference in the life of hungry Oklahomans,” says Rodney Bivens, Executive Director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “Her donation will provide hope, in the form of food, to many of our neighbors in need who otherwise would go without.” “I often forget how blessed I am and the good life I’ve been given. Giving back and seeing the impact the donation made was humbling,” says Cook. Angie Gains, Marketing Manager for the food bank speaks fondly of Zadies’ generosity. “It’s always great to see the next generation step up and continue to help the community and make Oklahoma a better place,” Gains says. Since the donation, Zadie Cook has become better informed about the issue of hunger in Oklahoma. She knows more about the struggles so many families face. The 17-year-old Owasso FFA member is also working to share what she’s learned with fellow students, encouraging them in the process. “The donation you make may not seem like a sacrifice to you, but to someone else it makes a difference.” Owasso FFA 2012 | 21
