FUEL YOUR

hat fuels your passion? Is it a special motivational quote? Helping another person? A champion slap? Maybe it’s a compliment from a friend that gives you the extra push to keep going. Many years ago, I was told to choose a job I love, and then I’d never have to “work” a day in my life. At the time, I never could have imagined that I could travel to stock shows and spend time with lifelong friends and help people as a part of my job. As a designer at Ranch House, I get to work with the best people in the nation, many of whom I grew up showing livestock with! Creating print advertisements, designing logos and even chatting on the phone with clients gives me extreme gratification at the end of the day. The fact that I made a difference for someone in helping marketing their livestock is the sole reason why I wake up in the morning to ‘work.’ I know this holds true for all of the staff at Ranch House.

The fifth issue of the Ranch House Journal serves as one of my favorites for many reasons. This issue features the stories of some of the top operations in the industry, and their path to success. In these pages you’ll also see several showcases of exceptional client work, and of course, print advertisements for spring sales and more. These pages are a prime example of what fuels our passion at Ranch House every single day. The rush of the summer show season is looming, and it seems like spring is already flying by. Remember, it is never too early to plan for your fall sale. If there’s anything we can do to eliminate the stress of marketing, let us know. After all, serving YOU is what fuels our passion for this industry. Until next time,

Melissa Grimmel, Graphic Designer

one show at a time, to discover success, it’s key to be driven, attentive, prepared, hardworking, and passionate about the livestock lifestyle. At least, such beliefs are central to the success of Cates Farms and its

dominance in the Shorthorn breed and recently in the Angus breed, said Tyler Cates, third-generation rancher at Cates Farms in Modoc, Indiana. “Just through making some good decisions and getting lucky a little

bit and working hard we’ve had success over a long period of time,” Tyler said.

behind the brand Within the Shorthorn community, Cates Farms needs no introduction. The brand has dominated the breed with 25 National Champions in the past two decades. And as the producer of two of the biggest sires in the breed, CF Trump and CF Solution, Cates Farms is making a huge impact. Behind the brand, Tyler and his wife Cortney Cates have slowly taken the reigns on the operation with the support of Tyler’s father Brian Cates and uncle Randy Cates who helped start the Shorthorn herd in the 1970s. Alongside herdsman Kyle Shoufler, the Cates family has grown Cates Farms into the established operation it is today. But that success doesn’t mean the Cates can be complacent. It’s important to stay current in the industry and continue working hard to provide a good product for customers, Tyler said. For Cates Farms, the biggest thing is to focus on breeding eye appealing, structurally correct show cattle. “No matter what the trends are in terms of body style, we’ve concentrated on always keeping the cattle really, really structurally correct. No matter what the trend has been, that has been able to keep us competitive,” Tyler said. He said he watches the trends and balances which direction the breed

is going with what is important to his customers. “I do think you have to be aware of the trends because you have to be one step ahead. If you see something coming, you don’t want to be two years late.”

building relationships Cates Farms customers continue to return because of the quality and service that defines the Cates brand. Cates Farms customer Alison Nichols, 23, from Sullivan, Indiana bought her first Shorthorn heifer from Cates in 2012 and said the Cates family customer service was unmatched. “They take the time to get to know every one of their customers. Tyler, Brian, Randy and Cortney are great about knowing what animals are best for you and your program. In terms of quality, I believe the countless banners that Cates Farms has won over the years explains that the quality is the best of the best!” Tyler said exceptional customer service is one of the reasons Cates Farms is still doing well today and has served some customers for as long as 20 years. “The thing that has kept us probably in business as long as we have is how you treat your

customers because there’s a lot of different places they can go and if you establish a good customer base and treat those customers right, you’ll have lifelong customers,” he said. Since buying her first heifer from Cates Farms in 2003, Bailey Clanton, 28, of Bucyrus, Kansas, said the people of Cates Farms have been like family. “It has been not only a business relationship but the Cates family has become a huge part of my life. I would give up my summers, spring breaks and even Christmas breaks in college to spend it in Modoc,” she said. “Since that day in 2003, they have taken me in as one of their own and have always pushed me to do my best inside and outside of the show ring…I don’t believe I would have accomplished near as much as I have without them.” Nichols’ and Clanton’s success in the show ring includes dozens of class and division champions at the Fort Worth Stock Show, National Western Stock Show,

continued passion Since his years showing in 4-H and junior shows, Tyler’s passion for the show cattle industry is still strong. He said he continues to learn something new every day and hopes to pass his knowledge on to today’s youth. “You get out of it what you put into it,” he said. “Success is not always winning grand champion. Success is doing better than what

12  Ranch House Journal | Spring 2017

you did the year before and learning new things and bettering yourself.”

online marketing While striving for quality and value in the Cates brand, Tyler and Cortney said they also know it’s important to maintain an online presence and stay active on social media so today’s young customers can see what the operation is doing and where it’s headed. Along with the Cates Farms website designed by Ranch House Designs, Cates is active on social media. Facebook is the biggest outreach channel for Cates and

drives people to the website where they can get more information and see new offerings each year. Tyler said today’s generation is constantly checking its phones and he wants to make sure he’s branching out and reaching his client base.

the future In line with staying current, as well as looking long-term, Tyler and Cortney recently started a herd of Angus, a familiar breed to the Cates since Cortney grew up showing and raising Angus in Maryland. Under the Sunrise Sunset Farm brand, they aim to breed show quality

Angus to the standards people have come to expect with Cates Farms Shorthorns. “We’re really focusing some of our future on getting our Angus operation to where our Shorthorn operation is,” Tyler said. One day, Tyler wants to pass on the Angus operation to his daughter Piper, 2, so long as it’s what she wants to do. And he has a strong feeling she will, particularly because she is so fond of dragging her stuffed cow around the house on a halter. Whatever the future holds for him and his family, Tyler said he feels

good doing work he’s passionate about every day. “It has always been a way of life that we believe in, the livestock industry. We believe in the development of junior kids a great deal. That’s how we all got started.” The Cates family has reached great success because of the dedication to hard work and excellence. Through the ups and downs, it has been a journey worthwhile, Tyler said. “There’s a lot of trying days and there’s a lot of long days in doing this, but at the end of the day, there’s nothing else we’d rather do.”

LIVESTOCK LESSON

FROM DR. SEUSS

By Ashley Fitzsimmons

24  Ranch House Journal | Spring 2017

Oh the places you’ll go…” It’s always entertaining to me to see the comparison between my livestock and non-livestock friends when the “how many states have you visited” quiz makes its yearly appearance in my Facebook newsfeed. My non-livestock friends will always comment about how incredible it is that my fellow agriculturalists have been to 25+ states compared to their 5 or so; and, what ever could they be doing so many miles from home? The answer is always the same… “showing.” With two daughters that had a passion for everything Hereford my parents spent the past 20 years in a truck and trailer chasing white lines. The Junior National Hereford Expo was our summer vacation, the Western Nugget was our excuse to visit Reno in December and our closest drive to the National Western in Denver was a family tradition for 50 years. We’ve seen the bright lights of Tunica, Mississippi; spent what felt like forever traveling from Wyoming to Pennsylvania (shoutout to my East coast friends that haul all the time) and saw places on South Dakota backroads we still talk about as we journeyed to Sioux Falls. No matter the destination, the journey was always worth it. On the plane home from my latest show travels to Jackson, MS where my husband judged the junior cattle at the Dixie National, the woman next to

me asked if this was my first trip to the Magnolia State. When I told her it was actually my third (Tunica for Junior Nationals and Starkville for YBIC) she said something that caught me off guard. She told me whatever I was doing that brought me these places I should keep it up because not many people have the opportunity to see so much of the United States through more than just an airplane window. Sometimes those of us in the livestock industry, especially this time of year, start to get road weary. When you’re tired from driving thousands of miles and sick of fast food or sitting in airports, try a change of perspective. It’s important to think about just how lucky we are. Whether you’re in a 15 passenger van, with your family in a truck and trailer or tagging along with your spouse to a show, the livestock industry takes you places far beyond the travels of an average person. It’s a privilege to travel the U.S. and learn about different livestock practices, crops that are not grown in your part of the country and people’s stories about their own experiences in the industry. It opens your mind, multiplies your friendships and fills your life with incredible experiences. “Oh the places you’ll go… You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights! ” I feel lucky to have 30 states checked off my list and can’t wait for the next one! When Dr. Seuss said “Oh the places you’ll go…” man was he right!

Humble AND KIND

Pembrook Cattle Company shares the background of their operation and their road to success.

T

here’s a quiet humbleness about them: like the words of Tim McGraw’s popular song Humble and Kind, “Don’t take for granted the love this life gives you, when you get to where you’re going don’t forget to turn back around and help the next one in line. Always stay humble and kind.” Travis and Beth Pembrook, along with their sons Bret and Bryson, are living out their dreams together at Pembrook Cattle Company of Fairview, Oklahoma.

From Bluegrass to Red Dirt Cattle have been part of the Pembrook family for nearly 40 years. “Beth and I grew up in the registered seedstock business,” says 30  Ranch House Journal | Spring 2017

By Rachel Cutrer

Travis. He showed registered Angus cattle as a young man, and Beth was an avid Limousin showman in Kentucky. They met at a show, fell in love, moved to Oklahoma, and began their own operation on Travis’ family ranch. Today, they raise cattle with their sons Bret (8) and Bryson (2) along with Travis’ parents and grandparents. “We’ve been blessed,” says Travis. Though Fairview is a small town, the Pembrooks love it. They appreciate the rural lifestyle and the quietness of living in the country. “It’s unique to be in such a rural area, far enough out of town that our way of life is preserved for a while,” he says. “Every day, whether it’s my grandpa or my dad... all the way down through our kids... everyone is as involved and have their own way of adding to our success.”

The Pembrook Promise The Pembrook family strives to serve their customers in a way that is reminiscent of the down-home feeling you would expect from a 4th generation rural rancher. Business is done on a man’s word and a handshake that is as good as gold. “It’s the cattle industry, but a people business,” says Travis. “We believe in running our business in a way that aligns with our Christian values and creating lasting relationships with our customers. We’re a family business, and when you work with us you’re dealing with the heart of the operation.” The Pembrook’s main focus is raising and marketing registered Angus cattle throughout the year, including bulls, bred females and show heifers. They also maintain a smaller herd of Red Angus and a

handful of SimAngus cattle. They appreciate quality cattle of all breeds and participate in several sales throughout the year that have an all-breeds show heifer focus. “Our goal is to raise and sell cattle that will go to work and return dividends for our customers,” Travis says. PCC has also become known as a reputable source of high-end seedstock bulls. “We’ve been blessed to have a lot of our herd bulls end up in big bull studs throughout the country,” says Travis, with pride. He and Beth are proud their bulls are able to help improve the herds of cattlemen nationwide through the large distribution networks of their bull stud clients like Select Sires, Cattle Visions, and many others. This vision has led to PCC’s ownership stake in popular bulls such as BC Eagle Eye, BC Classic, Upgrade, Frontman, Sitz Easy Street, Firestorm, PCC Witten, and PF Broadview.

Small Town Dreams, National Championship Success From the pasture to the show ring, the Pembrook’s believe in providing cattle that compete to win. Whether your goal is a national champion or a higher sale price, they help produce winners. Early in their marriage, the Pembrooks operated a Gelbvieh custom fitting service and later represented V8 Shorthorns as their herdsman for more than 10 years. Throughout their career in the cattle business, Travis and Beth have sold or exhibited the Grand Champion Females at San Antonio, Houston, Fort Worth, Kansas City, Denver, Louisville, and numerous state fairs throughout the country. They enjoy helping others succeed in the cattle business. “Our ideal customer is one that is super involved and wants to achieve,” Travis says. “When a customer takes pride

in what they do, I enjoy sharing their successes.” The PCC prefix has become a nationally recognized brand of success, with cattle showing from California to Florida in the last few years. Texas is a major market for their program.

The PCC Marketing Plan Throughout the year, the Pembrook family can be found at several major sales; some at the ranch in Oklahoma, some online; and some at special consignment sales in the south. “People are welcome here at the ranch anytime,” says Travis. PCC bulls are sold private treaty and through special sales. Every October, the Pembrooks host an Angus female sale at the ranch in Oklahoma. In this sale, the Pembrook’s showcase their maternal emphasis by offering exceptional Angus females for sale that have great udders,

superior genomics and are well made. In December, PCC hosts their Holiday Lights Online Sale, which is a showcase offering of show heifer prospects. Travis organizes an exceptional offering of all breeds show heifers, herd sire prospects, and potential donors. Many supreme champion females have made their way through the Holiday Lights Sale. The Pembrook family has worked with Ranch House Designs since 2008 — when they first began marketing cattle online with a website. Through the years, the Pembrook’s have been early adopters of new marketing

32  Ranch House Journal | Spring 2017

technologies including online sales, videos, and social media marketing. “I’m always surprised at how many people find us online,” says Travis. “We get a lot of catalog requests from our website, and last year we got a ton of new clients from promoting our cattle on Facebook.”

Reputation of Integrity When asked how he hopes people perceive their business, he describes integrity as their first priority. “Our goal is to be a family business with quality seedstock, show ring competitiveness, and humility,” he says.

In the shadow of the Gloss Mountains outside of the town of Fairview, Oklahoma, the Pembrook family is achieving just that. Elite Angus cattle graze in the pastures of Pembrook Cattle Company, but exceptional cattle, honestly raised is more than a business at Pembrook, they are working to build a legacy. “When those dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you when the work you put in is realized...let yourself feel the pride, but always stay humble and kind.” - Tim McGraw.

a show mom’s PERSPECTIVE

By Lisa Strong

My feet hurt, and my body aches, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My lips are chapped, I’m covered in dirt; My work week has nothing on our weekend work!

38  Ranch House Journal | Spring 2017

On my days off, I’m up before the sun, helping my kid get the job done.

Washing, blowing, clipping, and shearing, baas, moos, & lots of squealing.

We are learning together as we go, headed out early, to just one more show.

The progress must pause, the animals must eat; fill them up, with ten more hours on our feet; Back to the stand for blocking & fitting,

“what are you doing??” No time for sitting!!

Parents around me are biting their nails,

Check the schedule, who’s up next in the class? Better spray him down, and get to the ring fast!

Surely they feel like me, I want to bail!

Up to the gate, standing in the long crowded line, I whisper to myself, “they’re going to do just fine.” They’ve worked so hard for this moment. They look great, there they go, my money and my kid, through the gate. Did she watch the last class close enough? Oh my, this Judge looks like he’ll be tough! Set his front feet..Now, do it again. Stop the fidgeting if you’re gonna win! I say a few prayers, cross my fingers, OH I can’t look! I just keep thinking back on what getting here took. My baby has worked for months on end, She’s done everything we’ve told her and THEN…….. The Judge, so serious, starts pulling them 3.. 2.. 1…; But WAIT, are they on the bottom, or has she just won?

But I can’t walk away, I can’t turn my head, I wanna see her finish, last is what I dread. I just can’t stand to see the tears if she is last, because I’ve known that helpless feeling in the past. The Judge is reaching for his mic, Oh I hope it’s them that he likes. He’s finished his lengthy reasons, and sets the mic down, I wonder whose hand he’ll shake, as he walks around? Right beside my sweet precious child, he stands, In slow motion, he reaches out his hand; I try to take pictures, but I can’t stand still! This is THE moment, and remember it, we will; A purple banner to hang on her wall, but that’s not what it is about at all. The memories we’ve made traveling the state, are many & precious, it has been great.

The good friends we have made to and fro, and the showmen we see wherever we go. The superb work ethic she has been taught, the apologies she made when we fought; The stress to get things done, mile after mile, The laughter we shared, and all of the smiles; The torn jean emergencies, safety pin mishaps, The valuable lessons we learned, knowledge we lacked; The “big girl” stuff like loading the slaughter trailer and the people she now knows will never fail her. The drive to be better than the day before, and the desire to help others even more. Using her head, her heart, health, and hands, to value what greatness comes from the land. I wouldn’t trade my sore feet or dirty jeans, my broken nails, or calluses for anything. Nothing makes you more proud & alive, Then knowing your kid has that kind of Drive!

In 2012, my family and I decided our cattle operation needed a complete overhaul. We decided to become Triple Crown Ranch and put more emphasis on selling and producing our own show stock. Our first move was to contact RHD. We knew their reputation for quality work. They did a great job of encompassing what we stand for and maintaining a cutting edge, up to date website. With the help of their quick response time, wonderful staff and innovative designs we are definitely at the top of our game.” TRIPLE CROWN RANCH Angleton, Texas

hard to put into words what happened at the Royal for RK Cattle Co. Winning National “ It’sAngus Female and then on to winning Supreme Female was something you only dream about. It’s why we do what we do, and what keeps us in the barn every day. None of this could have happened without our hard-working Royal crew.
