My f a v o u r i t e a r t i c l e was t h e DC s e c t i o n i n w h i c h some o f t h e men, & a g r o u p o f womm i n were asked t h e same q u e s t i o n s & t h e n l a t e r compared a n s w e r s . I t r e a l l y s t r u c k me how t h e wimmin were q u i c k t o make c h a r a c t e r i s t i c d i s t i n c t i o n s b e t ween wimmin & men, & how h e s i t a n t t h e men were t o a d m i t any d i f f e r e n c e s a t all. I t seems as t h o u g h t h e men were p u t i n a t r a p - t h e y knew t h e i r answers c o u l d be j u d g e d as " t y p i c a l " o r " a - t y p i c a l " male b y a l l t h e " l i b e r a t e d - f e m i n -

Why i s there t h i s double-standard? Isn't that sexist i n itself? I'm n o t s a y i n g t h a t a l o t o f men, even in " p o l i t i c a l l y correct" circles aren't s e x i s t , most a r e , I'm j u s t s a y i n g t h a t most wimmin a r e t o o , & we need t o recogn i s e t h i s & w o r k on b o t h sexes g e t t i n g o u t o f s o c i e t y s t r a d i t i o n a l r o l e s & characteristics. A l t h o u g h I m y s e l f was o n l y i n T o r o n t o f o r about 2 weeks, i t d i d seem l i k e the Toronto a n a r c h i s t / a n t i - a u t h o r i t a r i a n community h a d been c o n n e c t ed & made s t r o n g e r as a r e s u l t o f t h e Gathering, but time w i l l t e l l i f the bonds c a n r e m a i n . The d i v e r s i t y o f t h e N. American ana r c h i s t movement (& I suppose as a w h o l e ) , t o me, i s b o t h i t ' s s t r e n g t h & i t s m a j o r weakness. The d i v e r s i t y exi s t s i n b o t h forms o f a n a r c h i s m &, t o a c e r t a i n e x t e n t , l i f e s t y l e s o f anarchi s t s themselves. The forms o f a n a r c h ism, such as a n a r c h o - s y n d i c a l i s m , e c o l o g i c a l a n a r c h i s t s , a n t i - t e c h n o l o g y , ana r c h o - c o m m u n i s t s e t c . have p r o v e d t o be a m a j o r d i v i s i o n . F o r example, gene r a l l y speaking, a n a r c h o - s y n d i c a l i s t s see a s o c i e t y based much more on an industrial worker-controlled situation while ecologists & anti-technologists see t h i s as moreof a danger t o e a r t h & i n d i v i d u a l f r e e d o m . T h i s i s v e r y general & simplistic but I think i t point o u t some m a j o r d i f f e r e n c e i n a n a r c h i s t t h e o r y & approach. So a t t h e G a t h e r i n g i t was i n d e e d i n t e r e s t i n g t o see 800 a n a r c h i s t s co-operating & inter-acting. Segments o f t h e c o u n t e r - c u l t u r e were w e l l r e p r e s e n t e d , w i t h many h i p p i e s , punks, gay anar c h i s t s , f e m i n i s t s (excuse a l l t h e l a b e l s ) , & t h i s b r i n g s us back t o l i f e styles. These c u l t u r a l g r o u p s a r e ;.i v e r y oppressed & s p a t upon by m a i n stream s o c i e t y , which i s c o n d i t i o n e d t o despise a l l non-comformity, y e t i n t h i s a n a r c h i s t community t h e s e g r o u p s a r e a c c e p t e d , r e s p e c t e d , & welcomed. (One t h i n g i s i m p o r t a n t l y m i s s i n g ; more r a c i a l g r o u p s ; Why was a l m o s t t h e w h o l e G a t h e r i n g young & w h i t e ? The p e o p l e s o f c o l o u r a r e much more t h e t a r g e t s o f t h e r a c i s t government s y s t e m . . . ) . As I s a i d b e f o r e , t h i s d i v e r s i t y & respect f o r d i f f e r e n t cultu r a l g r o u p s , m i n o r i t y ' s e t c . i s one o f Anarchisms s t r o n g e s t p o i n t s . I say t h i s because I m y s e l f saw t h i s , f e l t t h i s , & I b e l i e v e i t was t h e s t r o n g e s t arguement f o r a n a r c h i s m . . . t h a t o f i n d i v i d u a l freedom y e t a sense o f r e s p o n s i b i l i t y t o t h e community.

F R I . JULY 1 s t F r i d a y m o r n i n g was a g e n e r a l m e e t i n g a t t h e 519 Church s t . Community c e n t r e . Some T r o t s k y i s t s a t t e m p t i n g t o s e l l l i t e r a t u r e were d e a l t w i t h f a i r l y q u i c k l y a f t e r a b i t o f d i s c u s s i o n , as w e l l as a f e w m e d i a - t y p e s . The T o r o n t o A n a r c h i s t s had p u r p o s e d l y k e p t a d i s t a n c e f r o m t h e media as we a l l know t h e i r "odd'.' h a b i t o f d i s t o r t i n g e v e r y t h i n g they r e p o r t ! This d i s t r u s t o f t h e media w a s n ' t h e l p e d w i t h a r t i c l e s l i k e "15,000... w h i t e s u p r e m i s t s . . . n e o - n a z i s . . . " t o be a t t e n d i n g . Reacti o n a r y a r t i c l e s designed t o s t i m u l a t e f e a r & h a t r e d o f t h e A n a r c h i s t community. A f t e r t h e m e e t i n g p e o p l e went o f f t o w o r k s h o p s o r j u s t meet p e o p l e . Over 63 workshops went on d u r i n g t h e f i r s t 2 d a y s , o n s u b j e c t s l i k e ; Anarchy i n Greece, s q u a t t i n g , e c o l o g y . N a t i o n a l l i b e r a t i o n s t r u g g l e s , anarcha-feminism t e c h n o l o g y , r a c i s m , dumpster d i v i n g , CSIS e t c . Few o f t h e workshops were a c t u a l l e c t u r e s , most were d i s c u s s i o n s sharing opinions or experiences. I n t h e e v e n i n g was t h e b a n q u e t , and t h e f i r s t p o l i c e h a s s l e s . 2 Americans were a r r e s t e d f o r " E n t e r i n g t h e c o u n t r y u n d e r F a l s e P r e t e n s e s " , meaning t h e y d i d n ' t t e l l the border guards t h e y were h e a d i n g f o r t h e G a t h e r i n g , & w h e t h b r o r n o t t h e y d i d was u n i m p o r t a n t as t h e p e o p l e were h e l d a l l weekend & m i s s e d t h e G a t h e r i n g . Countermeasures were q u i c k l y t a k e n & no more bogus a r r e s t s were made. SAT.

More workshops & I m i s s e d t h e ones I r e a l l y wanted t o see as I s l e p t i n . I n t h e e v e n i n g was t h e g i g s - MDC, Scream, F a i l - s a f e , PL0, Mr. T E x p e r i e n c e , & a n o t h e r band I c a n ' t remember. T h i s was such an e x c e l l e n t g i g , a l l t h e bands w e r e - g r e a t , & MDC p l a y e d a l l t h e i r g r e a t s t u f f l i k e "John Wayne was a N a z i " , " B u s i n e s s On Parade", "No More Cops", f u c k i n g great'. The w h o l e g i g was f u n & had a r e a l l y c o o l atmosphere. A t a n o t h e r venue t h e Lay-About s r e p o r t e d l y p l a y e d an e x c e l l e n t g i g

F u n - f a c t #2- 52 d i v i s i o n has been i n v e s t i g a t e d by Amnesty I n t e r n a t i o n a l f o r beatings & t o r t u r e . ) D u r i n g t h e a c t u a l p r o t e s t i t may have seemed l i k e t h e p o l i c e were i n c o n t r o l , b u t on c l o s e r e x a m i n a t i o n i t ' s obvious how f u c k e d up t h e y w e r e . T h i s i s c l e a r f o r 2 r e a s o n s 1) we had no p r e - p l a n n e d r o u t e , so t h e kops c o u l d n ' t p r e d i c t where we'd go or what we'd do, i t was t o t a l l y s p o n t a n e o u s , & 2) t h e kops were c o n s t a n t l y r e a c t i n g t o w h a t we d i d . T h i s was o b v i o u s l y a s i t u a t i o n w h i c h t h e s e kops were u n f a m i l i a r w i t h . One t h i n g t h e kops d i d do was p r e v e n t us f r om a t t a c k i n g our r e a l t a r g e t s - c o r p o r a t i o n s , c a p i t a l i s m , consumer s o c i e t y e t c . I f a n y t h i n g t h e p o l i c e i n s t i g a t e d more of the v i o l e n c e i n t h e i r attempts t o p r o t e c t p r o p e r t y . D e s p i t e t h i s a few t h o u s a n d d o l l a r s w o r t h o f p r o p e r t y damage was i n f l i c t e d . I n one newspaper a c c o u n t a kop s a i d " U s u a l l y t h e y go l i m p , we p i c k them up & t a k e them away. T h i s i s d e f i n a t e l y new- r u n n i n g i n t h e s t r e e t s " , & a n o t h e r s a i d "We c a n ' t pen them i n , t h i s i s l i k e E u r o p e " . Not q u i t e l i k e E u r o p e , b u t you g e t t h e p o i n t . When I was a t t h e 52 D i v i s i o n Hqs, I l i s t e n e d i n on many r a d i o c o n v e r s a t i o n s & kops d i s c u s s i n g t h e days a c t i o n s , & t h r o u g h t h e r a d i o one o f f i c e r r e p o r t e d "They're h e a d i n g up s u c h - a n d - s u c h a street',' t o w h i c h one kop r e p l i e d "Why d o n ' t we j u s t l e t them have t h e w h o l e damn c i t y ? * , & t h e o t h e r kop s a i d "We a l r e a d y have." The kops use o f " s n a t c h - s q u a d s " was also quite interesting. About 4-5 kops w o u l d r u s h i n on a p r e - s e l e c t e d p r o t e s t er & t a c k l e him/her. T h i s was o f t e n done a t i n t e r s e c t i o n s where t h e crowd w o u l d be e f f e c t i v e l y t h i n n e d o u t , maki n g i t e a s i e r t o g r a b someone. Perhaps an a r t i c l e on p o l i c e t a c t i c s i n s i t u a t i o n s l i k e t h i s w i l l be done i n f u t u r e issues? CONCLUSION How much p o s i t i v e a f f e c t t h e DOA had i s h a r d t o say. I n a sense i t ' s much l i k e any a n a r c h i s t p a p e r , l e a f l e t , book e t c . as i t i s i n i t s e l f a c r i t i s c i s m o f t h e s t a t e , an a t t a c k a g a i n s t i t s i n s t i t u t i o n s , a loud voice raised i n protest. Perhaps i t w i l l s t i m u l a t e some p e o p l e t o t h i n k more by t h e m s e l v e s & a l s o c r i t i c a l l y o f t h e s t a t e , b u t how as w e l l & e v e r y o n e had gobs o f that's cool, right? O r i g i n a l l y t h e DOA was i n t e n d e d as a g e n e r a l p r o t e s t a g a i n s t many s t a t e i n s t i t u t i o n s , c o r p o r a t i o n s & o t h e r scum who a t t e m p t & make our l i v e s n o t h i n g more t h a n numbers & d o l l a r s , b u t on Sunday t h e US s h o t down an I r a n i a n a i r l i n e r k i l l i n g 290 p e o p l e , & t h i s o b v i o u s l y made p e o p l e v e r y angry'. We g a t h e r e d o u t s i d e theUS c o n s u l a t e a t 12 noon & as I a r r i v e d I n o t i c e d t h e heavy p o l i c e p r e s e n c e . A f t e r demonstr a t i n g o u t s i d e t h e C o n s u l a t e we began moving down t h e s t r e e t & were c o r r a l l ed i n t o a t i g h t b a r r i c a d e t h a t k e p t us on t h e s i d e - w a l k . G r a f f i t i was l e f t e v e r y w h e r e as we moved on & c r o s s e d t h e r o a d . The media began p o s i n g a p r o b l e m as t h e y began b l a t a n t l y f i l m i n g p e o p l e s f a c e s & g e t t i n g i n t h e way. We s t o p p e d a t a S. A f r i c a n war memori a l where a n a z i f l a g , a US f l a g , & t h e n t h e b l a c k f l a g o f Anarchy were t o r c h e d . The m i l i t a n c y & anger o f t h e

p r o t e s t grew & we q u i c k l y t o o k t o t h e s t r e e t s , l a u g h i n g & y e l l i n g "No War, No KKK, No F a s c i s t USA". Soon t h e Kop s made t h e i r f i r s t c h a r g e , l u n g i n g i n w i t h h o r s e s & n i g h t - s t i c k s , & f r o m • ••• h e r e on i t became l i k e a r u n n i n g s t r e e t - f i g h t t h r o u g h t h e down town c o r e o f T o r o n t o . When t h e Kops moved i n t o a r r e s t p e o p l e , o t h e r p e o p l e would f i g h t bake & " u n a r r e s t " t h e p e r s o n . At one i n t e r s e c t i o n we s t a r t e d h a u l i n g o u t some o f t h e kops own b a r r i c a d e s & movi n g them up t o b l o c k t h e h o r s e s , b u t t h e kops q u i c k l y c h a r g e d u s . We wandered o u t o f t h e down-town a r e a & some wimmin t o o k o f f t h e i r t o p s i n defiance of the r i d i c u l o u s l y s e x i s t P u b l i c i n d e c e n c y " laws w h i c h f o r b i d s wimmin f r o m e x p o s i n g t h e i r c h e s t s b u t a l l o w s men t o . Some more p e o p l e were a r r e s t e d & we moved on, m a k i n g - o u r way t o Queens P a r k . A t t h i s p o i n t t h e f u n ended f o r me as I was a r r e s t e d f o r a l l e g e d l y " A s s a u l t " on a r e p o r t e r , haha! E v e r y o n e s t o p p e d i n Queens p a r k . The kops were g r o w i n g i n numbers, O n t a r i o P r o v i n c i a l p o l i c e & the c i t i e s "Public Order U n i t " were c a l l e d i n , so a t t h i s p o i n t t h e crowd d i s p e r s e d . About 31 p e o p l e were a r r e s t e d , most on " A s s a u l t P o l i c e " o r " A s s a u l t " . The b r u t a l i t y o f t h e p o l i c e was no s u r p r i s e , j u s t as i t was no s u r p r i s e t h a t 6 o f t h e b a s t a r d d were i n j u r e d & 3 s e n t t o t h e Hospital:

The p i g s a s s i g n e d t o t h e c o n c e r t were not too happy about t h i s & c o n s t a n t l y h a s s l e d people about beer d r i n k i n g , herb smoking e t c , a l s o u n d e r c o v e r p i g s wandered through t h e crowd, doing such l o v e l y t h i n g s as t a k i n g p i c t u r e s of people f o r t h e i r f i l e s . Anway, t o g e t on t o t h e bands- t h e r e was q u i t e a v a r i e t y , something f o r everybody. I t s t a r t e d o f f w i t h some h i p p i e s i t w i t h a c o u s t i c g u i t a r s , then some r a p bands, both which I found r a t h e r bori n g . Then t h e b e s t p a r t o f the a f t e r noon- Nausea. As soon as they w a l k e d onto the s t a g e a l l t h e punks jumped out o f t h e i r s e a t s & r a n t o t h e f r o n t . When we g o t back a reggae band, Chin A f r i c a p l a y e d , they f u c k i n g jammed o u t ! G r e a t ! On t h e i r l a s t -on song "One w o r l d s enough f o r a l l o f u s " the audience helped them on t h e chorus & n e a r t h e end o f i t they i n v i t e d everyone t o come on t h e s t a g e & dance. A t e r r i f i c ending t o an i n s p i r i n g c o n c e r t , t h i s was one o f the b e s t RAR c o n c e r t s I ' v e s e e n over t h e y e a r s .
