Holiday Service By: Katherine Fox

In Amarillo, Texas, students from two of the offered districts, Canyon Independent School District and Amarillo Independent School District, are given many opportunities for service throughout the year, but there are a few special projects they are given the choice to participate in during the holidays. There are multiple canned food drives for Key Clubbers and students to donate to, and this year they were able to collect more than previous years, as there were shortages of the in-person meal drives due to the CoronaVirus. Randall High School’s Student Council held a food drive this year, and gave the Key Club, and other organizations on campus, a wonderful opportunity to give back to their community and those in need. In addition to the Student Council’s food drive, Key Clubbers from Randall High School were able to go to the food bank to help organize, sort, and distribute cans and boxes of food from a distance, as to stay in regulation with the city’s rules on social distancing. Students were able to count many hours of service for their hard work in keeping others fed and bringing them joy and hope during the holidays. Of course, this is a project that Randall High School, along with other high schools in the area, can be a part of all year long. Students felt that, by contributing during the holiday season, they were able to use the spirit of giving and service and make even more special connections with the increase of people in need. The most special and festive service project Key Club members from Randall High School are able to attend is a light festival at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. At this event, students are split up into small groups and they allow spectators to enter and exit, and they are standing along the paths to ensure no one touches the lights or strays from the path. Since the city of Amarillo has mask and social distancing ordinances, students were also ready and available to ask people to spread apart, stay in their groups, and to put on or pull up their masks. Randall High School’s volunteer experiences at the Botanical Gardens are easy to earn, and students are guaranteed to have a good time while helping others around them have fun and enjoy the lights. Randall High School is very lucky to be able to be part of such a wonderful event, and spread holiday cheer to the city of Amarillo.

2021

By: Katherine Fox

2020 was quite a rough year for most of us, and in many different ways, it was awful. In terms of service, 2020 did not stray far from it’s course of awfulness. Due to the CoronaVirus and quarantine, opportunities to get out in the community were slim. The school board was hesitant to allow certain groups, clubs, and organizations to continue on as they did in years prior because of the danger that came along with being in public and possibly being exposed to any illness. They worked very hard to allow school’s to march into the school year with their extracurriculars in view. At the beginning of the school year, it was difficult to put together times to be all as one to meet, and to organize service projects. Some of the sponsors were no longer open or able to allow volunteers to help out, and almost everything had to be documented to provide assurance that all safety precautions were being taken. In spite of all this, Randall High School dug through the problems and found solutions to create an environment safe enough for students to not only return to school, but to participate in anything they had been in previously. The Key Club at Randall High looks forward to the new year, to hopefully create even more opportunities for students. In 2021, the Key Club at Randall High School will continue to work hard and provide service for the community around them in and out of the school setting. The club will continue to participate in their regular service projects, such as Snak Pak 4 Kids, food drives, Washington Family Service Center, Flag Pickup after holidays that honor the American flag, and many more. The past year, for many, has been one full of doubt, fear, and frustration. There is no question that it can only get better from here! During the holidays, many students attended events in the community to lift others up, and contribute to Key Club’s amazing values. Throughout the next year, Randall High School will do it’s best to continue the face of service to those around them. Some exciting opportunities the students at Randall High School are looking forward to this new semester include: volunteering wherever possible, helping other Key Club members with homework and study habits, many more Google Meets to collaborate and contribute during meetings, LEDCON, and voting for next year’s board and representatives!
