EDITOR’S NOTE

Editor’s Note Hey Key Clubbers! I can’t believe the school year is already halfway over! Not only that, but a new year has started! I hope everyone had a wonderful break and lots of fun during the holidays. I can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for our club and what we will accomplish during the remainder of the school year. Yours in Service, Chantha Dalena Le

What is

DCON PROMOTION

DCON? By Chantha DalenaLe

District Convention DCON is an annual Key Club convention that takes place in Dallas. At DCON, there are not only other key clubs from around Texas, but Oklahoma as well. These clubs make up the TO District (Texas-Oklahoma District), which consists of nearly 300 clubs. All these clubs have the opportunity come together at DCON, allowing key clubbers to meet many other Last Year’s DCON students from Texas and Oklahoma who share a similar passion of serving others. One of the exciting things about DCON is that each year they have a theme. Last year, the theme was Harry Potter. Despite having never watched Harry Potter, I still thought the theme was very fun. They try to incorporate the theme into each event as much as possible. For this upcoming DCON, the theme is “Saving the world through service”. The first day of DCON usually consists of a giant ice breaker session that allows the members to get to know one another and become comfortable at the event. Then, the next few days typically consists of forums. There are many different types of forums, from informative to fun. For those who plan on running for a board position, there are forums that will give you guidance on your future in that position. For example, when I attended DCON last year, I made sure to attend the editor’s forum. At the forum, they gave many tips on creating a newsletters, the rules, and examples of what they’re looking for. In contrast, there are also forums that are very fun and active, allowing you to do yoga, play games, and do many ice breakers. At DCON, they also have a talent show that anyone can participate in. Then, we are all able to vote on who we think the winner should be. The year I attended, the talent was amazing. There were dancers, singers, and musicians. Clubs are also ranked in different categories and by different competitions. For example, Randall usually participates in the scrapbook competition, sign competition, and newsletter competition. At DCON, they announce the winners and give out rewards. Additionally, they announce the top clubs from the TO District. Last year, we were able to be ranked #6 out of the nearly 300 clubs in our district. It was an amazing experience. I recommend anyone and everyone to go to DCON if they can. For Randall’s Key Club, all you have to do is make sure that you have received all your required hours for the year and fill out a short application. Then, the board will review your application and determine your eligibility. We hope to take as many members as possible! DCON is an amazing experience offered by Key Club and I hope to see you all there!

The Botanical Gardens By Kami Velarde

This past weekend, our key club volunteered at our local botanical gardens to help with the christmas season duties. Since it is currently winter, the flowers in the gardens are obviously dead so instead of flowers, the gardens traditionally display christmas lights each year. The light setups are usually extravagant and never fail to disappoint. Hundreds of trees and arches are lit up as you walk through the gardens. To add to the Christmas vibe, the owners will hire musicians or singers to play or sing live music for the guests. This time, the musicians were our student teachers for our school marching band. They did a lovely job this year and impressed everyone that listened. This was our key club’s first year to work at the botanical garden’s christmas special and I am glad that it was! Helping out was exciting as well as humbling. Along with the joyful environment, each volunteer was set up at different stations around the gardens. People were placed at the coffee station inside, the front gate, inside by the door, or were helping with selling light up glasses. My particular placement was at the front gate. My job was to hold a bucket while ringing bells and asking for donations. One by one, the people would come in and sometimes burst through the gates in floods. Although it may have been hard to keep up with everyone, I made sure to say things like “Merry Christmas” or “Welcome to the

06

Gardens” to each and every one of them. Overall, I was able to greet over two-thousand-five-hundred people! I did need water after this as my throat was very dry from talking so much in the cold weather. Many people gave donations for the gardens which was super helpful. The main lady that was running the event told me that I was a great front gate person because of my “lovely smile” and my ability to look happy to be there despite being freezing. This was a major compliment to me and made me only want to do my job even better. I even received several compliments on my smile and politeness. Overall, this event was one of my favorites so far during this winter season! It was rewarding to see all of the happy visitors and the adorable children that enjoyed the light show. If I had the option, I would definitely come back next year.

The holidays are an eventful, fulfilling time for Key Club members. With all the festivities our club helps out with, the opportunity to get hours is never ending. One specific event that our club helps with annually includes delivering presents to those who are less fortunate in our city. This event, Eveline Rivers, helps key clubbers get into the spirit of Christmas because it is one of our more personal, rewarding events. Not only is this event for key clubbers, but many other volunteers in Amarillo. From Randall, other groups such as the baseball often participate as well.

Eveline Rivers By Jamie Roy

Key clubbers involved in the event met at Randall High School on December 9th at around 7:45 a.m. From there, they were divided into groups with a student or parent of a student driver. Some members had trailers attached to their vehicle, others with a hatchback trunk. Once everyone was assigned, drivers were given the directions to the Eveline Rivers building located downtown. The building is a large, red-brick structure, with garage doors to allow bulky loads to be taken in and out. Inside, the gifts are separated in piles and named by school district. This made the event organized and easy to accomplish. After arriving downtown, each carload went inside and registered to deliver presents. Those driving had to show their driver’s license and were given a card with a number on it. This card was to show that you had registered and were allowed to assist in transporting gifts. Next, participants chose which school they wished to deliver to. Most went to districts that had many presents because those areas needed the most assistance. Depending on how many were in each group,

members took 5 to 10 presents at a time to vehicles. Some taking only two trips, others needing about four. As soon as each vehicle was loaded, drivers and members began to bring gifts to houses. Most participants used their phones or car’s GPS to navigate to their destination since most were not familiar with the area. When delivering, if the resident of the house was not present, a card to hang on the door knob was given to groups. This card informed the occupant that in order to obtain their gifts, they would need to go to the Eveline River’s building and pick them up. Those with large loads often took until about noon to finish, while smaller loads completed the task earlier. Overall, Eveline Rivers is a club favorite and will continue to remind members the purpose of Key Club.
