Goals for 2022 By: Brooke Newson We all know the popular phrase, “new year, new me,” but together, as a Key Club, we are making our own phrase and forging our own path. Key Club will begin 2022 with their own phrase: “new year, new service opportunities.” Our Randall High School Key Club plans to make the most of those service opportunities and use this year to better themselves and their community. First of all, the new service opportunities the Randall Key Club has this year include potential projects for Amarillo Angels, a service organization for underprivileged children, and potential chances to do more projects with the children from Gene Howe Elementary School. Best of all, the Randall Key Club also gets to continue its tried and true service opportunities like helping out at the Washington Family Service Center, filling snack sacks at Fill with Hope twice a month, and putting papers in folders for the teachers at Gene Howe Elementary School. It’ll be full of some of the best service opportunities, involving the old and the new. The Randall High Key Club will utilize these opportunities to better ourselves by striving to become one of the best clubs in the Texas-Oklahoma area. The Randall Key Club is currently in the top 25 clubs for quarter 2 in the Texas-Oklahoma district. Our goal is to be in the top ten clubs by the time LED-con rolls around. We want to accomplish this goal by making our club very active, meaning many members participate in many service projects and receive the required number of hours per month. The Randall High School Key Club is totally capable of this commitment. We highly encourage each and every member to be involved and seize the opportunity to serve whenever they can. Additionally, our club plans on holding many socials and improving fellowship between our members. They will be a great way to build up our Key Club and bolster friendships within our community. In addition, the Randall High School Key Club wants to utilize the new year to better their community. We want to serve as we always have, and we want to improve our efforts day by day. The Randall High School board continues to look for new service projects, find community members in need, and think of how our Key Club can fulfill the governor’s and district projects in a way that will contribute positively to our community. All in all, 2022 is going to be a great year. It’ll be a year of ambition and accomplishment. Most importantly, it’ll be a year where the Randall High School Club becomes increasingly dedicated to our service and our community.

Riddle of the Month I travel and travel from here to there. I love to travel everywhere, but when I have nowhere to go, I make my own home. What am I?

Reflections on 2021 By: Brooke Newson

2021 was quite the year. It was full of struggles and triumphs. The world was and still is in a difficult place with regards to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Despite all of the trouble and unprecedented events 2021 brought, I am extremely grateful for the lessons it taught me as part of my Key Club experience. Most notably, 2021 taught me the value of dedication and perseverance, and I hope it was able to teach you all something too. Interestingly enough, I thought my senior year (the last half of 2021) wasn’t going to be very busy as compared to my last three years of high school, but, of course, it ended up being one of my busiest years yet, with all of my academic and extracurricular activities. Before that, my junior year (the first half of 2021) was absolutely hectic, as it was full of AP classes and duties outside of school as well. Key Club was hard to fit in my schedule, but I couldn’t bear to be without it. I needed service in my life. I wanted to participate no matter what, and that is how 2021 taught me the value of dedication. I found that if I showed up and signed up for events, no matter how tired or stressed I was, life would work out. I would find joy in the service events and somehow still find time to do my homework and participate in other after-school events. If I was dedicated to this club, and if I was dedicated to helping others, everything else would just fall in the background. When I dedicated myself to the community, rather than to myself, I found greater happiness and felt more balance in my life. I found that I didn’t need to have time for Key Club; I needed to make time. When I did, life worked out for the best, and I was able to do far more in Key Club, like participate on the board, make newsletters, and attend more service events, because dedication makes a difference. Hand-in-hand with dedication comes perseverance. Through the scheduling struggles the Randall Key Club Board has had, since all of its members are involved in various events, I have learned to persevere through frustrating circumstances and make the best of them. Our board has been able to collaborate and plan more socials and more events than in past years, and that is not because we have had an easy time, but because we have persevered. Through my personal trials with balancing Key Club and the rest of my life, I find that persevering and putting my all into Key Club is the best option. If I continued to serve, despite anxiety or stress, or despite having a busy day, I always felt better and I always got more out of Key Club. 2021 was a challenge. I know that everyone is struggling in one way or another, and I am so grateful to all of my fellow Key Club members for being great examples of dedication and perseverance, so that I was able to learn the lessons I did. I hope all of you remember that no matter how tough life gets, Key Club will always be there to uplift you as you uplift others.

Gifts for Giving By: Brooke Newson The Randall High School Key CLub is full of talented people- people who play instruments, people who make incredible artwork, people in theater, people in sports, and people with the gift of incredibly kind hearts. This season, the Randall Key Club has used their gifts to give back to those around them in various ways. First of all, the Randall Key Club used their art skills and their ability to interact with children to do a Christmas craft project at Gene Howe Elementary. They brought plates, construction paper, googly eyes, markers, and gemstones to the school and helped elementary students make little elf faces out of them. The Gene Howe students had an amazing time and were able to celebrate Christmas in a fun and creative way and so did the Randall High School students thanks to the talents of the Randall Key Club. The Randall Key Clubs used their talents both to help with the project and recognize what the children might need. Secondly, the Randall Key Club used their musical and theatrical talents to help out with the all-school musical, Beauty and the Beast. Kaeleigh Miller, Emma Williams, Ali Acosta, and Emme Vasquez played in the band, while Nikki Boron and Brooke Newson performed in the ensemble. We were able to spread good cheer to those watching the musical and spread the news about Key Club to our friends performing with us. Lastly, the Randall High School Key Club used the greatest talent of all throughout the winter break: the talent of giving time to a cause greater than oneself. Many of our members continued to serve at various projects, despite being on winter break. Although they may have been busy with travel plans, extracurricular responsibilities, and family responsibilities, they chose to go out in the cold and participate in service projects. They rang a bell outside the Hobby Lobby for Salvation Army, went to the Washington Avenue Family Service Center, and continued to give back to the community through personal service endeavors. We are grateful for the selflessness demonstrated by our members who continue to serve and give the gift of their time, even when they are on break. All in all, the Randall High School Key Club is incredibly talented. They chose to use the season of giving to give the gift of their talents and time to the community around them. From making elf faces to creating smiling human faces, they truly made this season meaningful. Thank you for all that you do, Key Club.

How to Have a Joyous January By: Brooke Newson January is a joyous month, especially when you are in Key Club. January is the first month of the year- a year that can start with service, love, and goodwill. January can sometimes be seen as depressing, desolate, and cold. Some say that January “drags on” and that there aren’t as many opportunities to serve. However, January can be just the opposite. It provides the perfect opportunities to serve those who are struggling after the holidays, those who are depressed, desolate, and cold, those whose lives are “dragging on.” If the Randall High School Key Club searches for ways to serve these people, we will find that our January flies by on the wings of selfless compassion and care. The first step on our joyous January mission is not to discount service opportunities just because there don’t seem to be as many or because they are the same service opportunities we’ve had month after month. Every single service opportunity is invaluable. The Randall High School Key Club needs to make the most of each and every event, get as many people to go as possible, and get as much work done as possible. If we value our service opportunities, no matter how big or small, we will be able to make January a great month. Service organizations are often experiencing a decrease in volunteer help after the busy month of December, when many are encouraged to serve by the holiday spirit. Let’s help them with that decrease by staying strong in our desire to serve and showing up to as many events as possible. Let’s try to serve more in January than we did in December. That way people in need this winter get the help they need right now and not just during the holidays. They need a joyous January too. The other step is to uplift those who are feeling dreary due to this long winter month. They might be our classmates, our fellow Key Club members, or our community members. No matter who they are, it is our duty to “uphold the objects of Key Club International” (Key Club pledge) by being inclusive, caring, and uplifting to all those around us. By simply writing thoughtful cards for people, inviting them to events, or taking time to listen to their problems and needs, we can make their January better. Service isn’t always a huge project. Sometimes it is just being a friend to those around us. Everyone could use a smile or a kind word, especially in January. That’s how to have a joyous January folks. Don’t focus on the potential disappointments it could bring. Focus on the unique opportunities that this month provides as the month immediately following the holidays. Find those who are struggling, search for service opportunities, and be your best self. Have a joyous January.
