Election Season By: Katherine Fox
The end of the second semester is quickly approaching, and that means election season is here!! Juniors, sophomores, and freshmen at Randall High School are eager to fill leadership and board positions for the 2021-2022 school year. It’s an exciting time, and members of Key Club in Amarillo are getting ready to compete for those high up spots! The board of Randall High School’s Key Club has made numerous videos to share with the club’s general assembly the duties, responsibilities, and excitement that comes along with being a leader. Each board member submitted a video, of about thirty seconds long, and the videos were uploaded to the shared drive the Key Club participates in. These videos are informational to any candidate who may want to learn more about each leadership position, and all that each position may entail. The 20-21 board has been working hard to create a safe and open environment with all the challenges the club has faced this year with the pandemic and mandates put in front of them. On the club’s Google Meet meeting’s each week, President Emily Klein has announced the requirements that need to be met for next year's applicants. In order to be on the board, students are expected to gain teacher recommendations, make a minute long speech and share it in a meeting in front of the general assembly, and give the board good reason to vote them in. The vote is a majority that is decided by the students who hold positions for the 20-21 board. The current board members have said that they are, “excited to see the future of the club at Randall High School,” and are, “ready to teach the new board how to carry on all the events and responsibilities.” The current board is composed of three seniors, and they have said that the “future of Randall’s Key Club is bright,” and that there are “many amazing candidates for the next year’s board.” When asked about goals for next year, junior President candidate Kaeleigh Miller says she is “ready to start her senior year strong, and continue to attend service projects and create new opportunities for the students of Randall High School.” The race for President will be exciting and there is much opportunity for growth with all the new faces and brains that are being put together to create a great environment for the Key Club at Randall High School. 3

HOTO: Kaeleigh Miller My freshman year I had just moved from North Carolina and it was my first time living in Amarillo. Key Club helped introduce me to my community and school. Without Key Club I don’t know if I would have been as familiar as I am now with Amarillo. I love Key Club because it allows you to meet new people and make new friends. I love the way it can bring people together to help others. I can’t imagine my high school year without it. My sophomore year I decided to run for recording secretary and got elected. As a recording secretary I take minutes, fill out reports, and help make decisions as a board. These reports go towards a point system that determines our ranking in the Texas/Oklahoma district. The reports consist of everything we do as a board, so I have to be aware of every decision being made. So far this year we have remained in the top 25 clubs in our district. After I joined Key Club, I later realized that I’m even more inclined to volunteer to help others, even in situations not related to Key Club. I feel that Key Club has helped build my character and shaped me as a person. It has made me more kind and considerate and it has opened my eyes to see how fortunate I am. I never realized how fortunate I was until I got the opportunity to see how others lived. My sophomore year in one of our events Evelyn Rivers we would get to go to people's homes and deliver kids Christmas presents. It was extremely disheartening to see how some people lived and when I came back home I couldn't be more thankful. I would encourage others everywhere to volunteer and try to help their community. 7
