Paws for a Cause Earlier in the school year, a member from Randall High School Key Club, Jonathan Hofmann, decided to raise money for a diabetic alert dog. The average diabetic alert dog costs approximately $25,000 due to the significant training required for the dog to learn to sense blood pressure spikes and falls. Jonathan decided that this dog would be necessary in order to continue succeeding in school and take away unnecessary stress. In conjunction with having to wear an insulin pump, he, as well as his entire family, wakes up at both 2 and 5 o’clock in the morning in order to ensure that his body is reacting normally to his insulin as well as regulate the level that he is administering. However, he never complains about being tired. I don’t understand how he keeps such high grades with the amount of stress and lack of sleep he receives. He is without question one of the smartest kids in his class and well loved throughout the school. I, personally, have never seen him upset or mad he just takes what the world throws at him and excels through it. That’s why we decided he certainly deserved all the help we could give him.

In order to help our fellow Key Clubber, Randall Key Club decided to have a fundraiser. We explored every option from dog shows to selling bracelets and just asking for donations; however, we decided t-shirts would both spread awareness and raise a significant amount of money. Therefore, over the process of multiple meeting and hours of discussions, we came up with our design and with our school district and Jonathan’s family’s approval we handed out flyers. The majority of the teachers rallied behind our beloved student as well a large number of students. Over the course of a couple months, our club sold 103 shirts for Jonathan. In total, our club, along with the help of our school and community, raised $2,670. We hope to give Jonathan his check within the following weeks. Also, in order to further stretch our awareness, we had a large group of members to walk with him at our local Junior Diabetes Research Foundation walk. We also helped work at the walk and had lunch with our best friend not even thinking that he was different. Our club rallied around Jonathan when he needed us most, and, to be honest, I think Key Club is all about Community.
