A summer of service By: Paige James Serving throughout the summer is important. It is important because people need help all year round and not just during the school year. There are lots of opportunities to volunteer in the community during the summer. The Randall High School Key Club has served at several different events this summer such as, The Ronald McDonald House Golf Tournament, and the Super Kid's Soap Box Derby. We have cooked meals for the Ronald McDonald House and have helped the Kiwanis Club by picking up flags. Serving not only during the summer, but throughout the school year is a great opportunity to get involved and has many benefits. Serving can help you establish leadership skills through teamwork and by collaborating with others. Serving can also provide a sense of value because you learn what truly is important. Serving the community is rewarding.
When we serve our community we develop many new skills. We develop emotional and social skills that allows us to get a better understanding of ourselves and develop connections with others. We develop self-awareness and self confidence, along with selfmanagement which is where we learn to control impulses, overcome stress and obstacles and to set goals for ourselves. We also learn social awareness. We gain a better perspective of emphasizing with others. We learn how to appreciate similarities and differences between other people. Another skill we can develop is relationship skills. We gain the skill by cooperating and solving conflict with others, along with resisting social pressure and asking for help when necessary. While volunteering you are sometimes faced with decisions you have to make. You have to learn to make responsible decisions because they not only affect you, but they also affect others as well.
I think serving during the summer also makes members excited for more opportunities to serve during the school year. As the Randall High School Key Club 2016-2017 editor I know that I am excited and I plan to help recruit new members and find more ways to get new and old members to be more involved. I think that the upcoming school year is going to go really well.
