Children's Miracle Network triathlon By: Maddy Sheffield
On September 10th, 2016 the Randall High School Key Club ivolunteered at the Children’s Miracle Network triathlon held at Lake Tanglewood. Everyone arrived at 7 am that morning and helped set up tables and tents for merchandise, children’s activities, and food. After participants and spectators arrived, members were assigned to stations on the course, monitoring children’s activities, or serving food. Our Key Club was a big part of serving food to the racers and spectators. Our help was very appreciated by all and our members had a great time volunteering at the race. Many members said that they really loved getting to cheer the racers on. They felt encouraging and they appreciated the participants motives for the race. It was a great way to fundraise and raise awareness for Children’s Miracle Network. I know that members were very helpful and had a great time doing whatever they needed to do because of the fun and encouraging atmosphere. Members enjoyed getting to monitor children’s bouncy houses and seeing the kids with their colorful face paint. Many members even had the opportunity to get their own faces painted and talk to the kids that were there. Most of the members helped out on the course. They handed out waters, counted bikes, pulled people out of the water, and cheered people on as they raced. After the race was over, we helped serve food. Locals from the area cooked hamburgers and hot dogs to serve to all the people who participated in the race and everyone who supported Children’s Miracle Network. We also filled coolers with drinks and ice and kept food stations filled on either side.

As the triathlon came to a close, we tore down stations, took down tents and folded up tables that were for merchandise and face painting. We put food back into refrigerators and loaded cooking utensils and other non-perishable items into cars. We also took down signs and folded up inflatables. We took out trash and made sure the areas were free of litter and wrappers. We gave away leftover drinks to volunteers and made sure all the sponsors were there to collect their trailers or anything else they brought to help with the triathlon. Overall, it was a great day for service. All the Key Club members told me what a great time they had and how they couldn’t wait for next year. I think they enjoyed the encouraging and fun atmosphere and enjoyed getting to be apart of a fun event. It was a great day and a wonderful way to support Children’s Miracle Network.
