“Falling” in Love With Key Club By:Katie Fox

My name is Katie Fox, and I am the editor for Randall High School’s 2020-2021 Key Club. My entire life, I’ve been told to serve others as I’d want to be served, and hold myself accountable for what I could do to help my community in times of need. I grew up in a Roman Catholic household, and I believe this is where my love and need to help and serve others came from. Since I was about five years old, I can remember doing countless service projects with my family. We would always go to the church and participate in food and clothing drives, creating bags of goods for the homeless in the city, lead the children in schooling while their parents were given the opportunity to work, and collect money to send to our shelters and clothing centers. When I moved my Freshman year of high school to a completely new town with new opportunities, and a new church, I was not sure where I was supposed to go to do all of the things I wanted to do and felt the desire to accomplish. I hadn't found a new church to call home yet, and I felt lost without something to go do or someone to help. It was easier to get involved at my brand new high school because my parents were having trouble figuring out where we wanted to attend church. So, I searched for clubs and organizations to keep myself busy. My best friend, who serves as the President of Randall High School Key Club, introduced me to the idea of this club my sophomore year. She had told me of the many opportunities I could have just by signing up and attending a few events to get hours. At first, I didn't know how I felt about being in such a time commitment or how much I liked the structure of the club. It was not until my first actual event that I knew Key Club at Randall was the place for me. I was able to help people in need like I had been doing my whole life, and I could do it at school and be with my peers and friends, and share that same joy with them. The best part is that I’m able to do even more projects at church because I’ve created bonds with a few of the leaders of organizations I attend for school. Falling in love with Key Club was one of the best choices of my high school years, and I’m excited to see where it leads me next!
