Editor’s Note Hello Key Club! Although many of you have been busy this past month with other extra-curricular activities, our Key Club has been supporting many projects throughout the month, and next month we will have just as many. Keep it up! Your Editor,

A Project Interview By Molly Sheffield Every Monday after school a few of our club members head over to Gene Howe Elementary School to help stuff take home folders for teachers. It may seem simple but it is one of our most helpful acts. Every single week at least one teacher will take the time to show their gratitude, even after a long day of teaching. Seeing the smiles on their faces are what make this event so worth it. Teachers are truly superheroes. They spend their days caring for each student individually and still find time to do the small, unnoticed things that make their classroom functional. I remember when I took home my folder every week I was always amazed at how organized it was and how nothing was left out. Now I see the time and effort that goes into each folder and am glad I am able to lift something off these teacher’s plates. This event has shown me how even the smallest of things can make all the difference. Week after week we are able to reach out to a local school and represent what Key Club is truly about. I hope the children see the leadership our members display and will join the club when they get to high school. It may be small but I can truly see how much it helps the teachers. The times I am able to help I always leave knowing I’ve helped lift a task of off the heavy shoulders of a teacher.

President’s Note “Key Club is a student ran community that I am more than appreciated to be a part of. Being president of the 2018-2019 year, it is my responsibility to hear everyone's ideas and voice. This is not only my home but others as well, being president does not mean to control everything, however to know what we as a family want to do. Key Club means as much to me as it does everyone else who is in it, many of us want Randall Key Club to prosper as well as have our family be a part of every service that they can be. Being Randall Key Club's representative is also a duty that I have, such as going to other schools meetings and being able to share our ideas to them and vice versa. Being in Key Club has made me realize how much we can do as students to our community. Such as projects like Snak Pak 4 Kids or Ronald McDonald House, we are always trying to help the community with what time we have. Key Club is not only a student ran organization, but a family that I am glad to be a part of.”

T

hroughout the month of December, members of Randall High School Key club bundled up in their thickest winter coats and mittens to lend a helping hand with the festivities at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens. A near decade long tradition, Christmas at the Botanical Gardens is a magical sight as every surface is set aglow with light and holiday cheer.

Every Friday and Saturday night leading up to Christmas our Key Club members lent assistance in a variety of tasks: offering to take photos of the visiting families, greeting incoming guests, and replacing bulbs in a quiet effort to keep the magic alive. Those greeting did so with a smile and a Santa hat adorning their head, advertised the hot cocoa and glow sticks, and guided guests onto the path that would take them through the garden--chastising the over eager and wishing a “Happy Holidays all the same. Others worked stationed at certain scenic positions, greeting the variety of people who walked down their assigned section of path and offering them a photo opportunity, gaining a picture of the face of Amarillo at the same time. I was assigned to a light tunnel my first night of volunteering, and as more people passed me their phones to capture their friends and family in the frame of the moment, I saw a form of love between all of them- from the

reluctantly photographed single dad to the family of 10 who always had somebody not looking at the camera. I started that evening in bitter cold that only worsened as my hands remained glove-free for touch-screens, but I finished with a warm heart over some of the people I had the chance to interact with for just a snapshot of their life. Our members got the unique chance this winter to help maintain the spirit of the Holiday season, and even if some of it was telling kids not to run while enduring wicked wind chill, the rest was a chance to connect. In the short time I worked there, the temperatures hovered just above freezing and hundreds of people tread the path, bounded by light garland wrapped on candy cane posts. The awe that warped the children's faces into smiles was a little like Christmas come early, as was the quiet joy shared between the older couples who had been coming for years. The absolute best part was the joy that lit the face of one young woman I met as her boyfriend got down on one knee. I thank the Amarillo Botanical Gardens for the opportunity to participate in making this event possible; I hope to see it all again next year.

A GIVING CLASSIC BY KAITLYN ANDERS, CLASS REPRESENTATIVE

On the second Monday and Tuesday of every month, Randall Key Club helps Snack Pak restock their delicious snacks and pack them into plastic grocery bags for the kids at our local schools in the area. This opportunity helps all the people in our school and the feeder schools get enough food for the week, and even for the holidays. When Key Clubbers get to Snack Pak, the first thing that they do is divide into pairs and start opening boxes that contain foods and drinks such as Pop tarts, Ravioli, Box drinks, and many others. While they are emptying out the boxes, they store everything into tubs for when it comes time to start packing. Another way to help out is after we are done filling up all the tubs with food, we break down all the boxes and any other container that the food was in so they don’t take up a lot of room. Then we throw it all into a big recycling bin or if it’s plastic, we put it into the trash. Once we are done unboxing everything we can, it’s finally time to start packing the bags. We go to a table with all the tubs on it and form two lines, one on each side. At the beginning of the line, someone hands

12

a grocery bag to the person at the beginning of each line and we start

by putting the foods that are closest to us inside. As we are doing this, we hand the bag over from one person to the next till it gets to the end. They store them into another tub until there are ten bags in each one. After we have filled enough bags for each school, we go back and start unboxing some more. To me, Snack Pak is a great way to give back to your community and to get to know people more. You can go there and help feed not just the kids at your school but even their families. With a lot of help, you can feed many people in your area and more. And

you can even make a person’s day with their favorite foods. Another benefit is you can become friends with some of the people in your community and find other ways to help out. Just think, there could be a person in your neighborhood who is counting on people like you to help them out.
