Veteran’s Cards By Emily Klein

T

here's usually only one day of the year that people really find time to appreciate our veterans. However, our Key Club tries to honor them as

often as possible, so when veteran's day did come up we decided to do something especially nice. We decided to create cards to take up to our local VA Hospital, but we

decided to the whole school on it as well. One of our especially patriotic teachers also has a son who is currently serving in Iraq, so she wanted to show her appreciation to those who have previously given their time to serve our country. The first step in this nationalistic process was to design a card for the veterans. We held a competition for the best design, and the winning one was chosen by the members. Once it was decided which card to use, we printed off one hundred copies of the paper that had three of the cards on it. We passed out the papers on the Friday before Veteran’s Day to each of the teachers that wanted to participate. That coming

Monday, all the people in the classes and during our meeting as well signed the cards and wrote short yet sweet notes to the veterans. At our Key Club meeting alone, we made around fifty cards! At the end of the day, we had over three hundred cards in to-

tal, and we were very proud of the students at Randall High School for being so patriotic and giving. Finally, after a long day at school and a day full of card making, I was given the honor of delivering the cards to the Veteran’s Hospital since it was my idea to make the cards. My dad and I drove to the down town district of Amarillo. We pulled up to the hospital, and it seemed empty and a little bit sad, so I was glad that we

had decided to bring them the cards. There was not anyone in the lobby of the hospital, so we left them on a desk in the office. No one was there at all, so it was a little creepy, but there were many cards on the desk in addition to our own cards, including cards from a boy scout troop. It warmed our hearts, and the other members of the board and general member’s hearts were warmed by the generosity and caring nature of our community.
