Children’s Miracle N By Laiklynn Brookshire

Ea

ch year our community coordinates a triathlon in order to benefit Children’s Miracle Network. Approximately 180 racers from all over the Panhandle come to Tri to Make a Million Differences for children in need. It all started with the birth of Thomas Boyce Lynch in 2005, who had a rare congenital seizure disorder. He spent the first two months of his life in the CMN supported Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Baptist St. Anthony’s Hospital of Amarillo. The Lynch’s and their friends began a letter campaign sought sponsorship to participate in a charity triathlon in McKinney, Texas. They raised over $23,000 for the CMN of Amarillo. Impressed by their motivation, the board of CMN and volunteers provided Amarillo with the TRi to Make a Difference Triathlon; $1,200,000 has been raised in the 13 years since its institution. Volunteers have always been the lifeblood of Children’s Miracle Network, and our group was not the only one rolling in at seven am for event setup. We started by getting an early morning boost of caffeine curtesy of Palace Coffee, and doughnuts curtesy of the Donut Stop before setting up the tents for volunteers, merchandise, and racer check in. After the merchandise table had been sufficiently organized, they moved us to racer check in. We handed out the tracker numbers corresponding with each person’s bib number. Additionally, each team member or runner had to be marked with their age and

Network Triathlon division via permanent marker. After everyone had checked in, there was a short safety meeting that included information about the course. The triathlon is hosted in Lake Tanglewood, a neighborhood out of town that supplies enough water for a swimming distance of approximately point nine three miles, a challenging six mile bike route and nine mile run. Members of our group were divided between water stations and taken via go cart. My station was at the top of a steep hill at the beginning of the biking section. Every single rider was exhausted by the top of the grueling incline, and most soared by without stopping for a drink of water. After the last racer came through, another golf cart followed and we picked up signs from along the course until reaching the finish line. A live band was playing and we feasted on freshly cooked hamburgers after being abandoned at the top of a hill for several hours. An awards ceremony was held to recognize the amazing people who work hard to benefit our community. The Panhandle, and Randall Key Club always support those who need it most.

The Wedding

O

n the evening of August 31, members of Randall High School Key Club donned their finest formal wear and gathered to lend a helping hand in catering for the union of the newly Mr. & Mrs. Rodriguez. It was with hushed excitement that we peeked through the kitchen doors, waiting for the guests to take leave of the dining hall and attend the ceremony so we could begin setting up unseen. Eventually, we spilled out into the hall itself, decked in its flowing fabrics and ribbons and accented in purple flowers and table settings, and set to work. Working quickly, we lined the black, cloth-covered serving tables in wire racks and chafing fuel canisters, functioning as an assembly line as we popped open the lids and lit a fire under the variety of Mexican dishes in their foil pans. We took our places once the spread was prepared for the crowd to flow back in, and with our serving spoons and smiles in place, we met each hungry attendee with good cheer. was assigned to the rice, pasta, and potato table, though the dishes rotated out quite frequently due to the sheer volume we served. I saw many faces pass me by, a, “would you like some…”

By Abbigail Davis pursed on my smiling lips and thank-yous on theirs, and each face, from the oldest grandmother I met to the youngest girl who twirled in her dainty white gown to the live mariachi music, was smiling too. Eventually, once every person had been served and the ceremony was set to move onto toasts and dancing, we were graciously offered to help ourselves to the hot, delicious food we had been standing over all night and eat in the quiet of the back porch. We also helped to serve at the decadent table of desserts and maintain the colorful menagerie of fruit that made up the fruit bar, fielding questions and helping wherever needed. am grateful that Randall Key Club was invited to share in the celebration of such a joyous occasion in one of the best ways possible- helping to make it happen. By the end of the night, after we had all cleaned up and gathered to depart under the single bright light that illuminated the back porch, my feet ached from standing in heels but my cheeks, still curled up in a smile, ached more after the night of jubilation.
