And the Theme is… By Emily Klein

F

rom rockets to retro, our club’s theme has always been eccentric and exciting, and this year is no exception. Here’s the scoop on our upcoming theme!

It’s one of our traditions each year to have a vote on the upcoming year’s club theme, so our board put on their thinking caps right after D-Con. Many themes were considered to take a spot in the final vote. It was tough to weed them out to the best, but the final ballot was as follows: Futuristic’s “Make service your future”, Carnival’s “We aren’t clowning around when it comes to service”, and Dinosaur’s “Service never goes extinct”. Since our previous two themes have been futuristic and then retro, this year’s board wanted to continue the timeline backwards into what some might call a fossilized era. In fact, the continuation of this chronological order had us blasting ideas around like Dino-mite! You might have guessed it from my Jurassic-ly terrible puns, but the winning theme for Randall High School Key Club 2018-2019 is… Dinosaurs! Our Parliamentarian, Molly Sheffield, will now give you an introduction to our theme. “For the 2018-2019 school year our club chose the theme ‘Service never goes extinct’. Our club shirts will be dinosaur themed promoting this motto throughout the year. ‘Service never goes extinct’ is a friendly reminder to all that serving your community will never be ‘uncool’. No matter what season of life we are in, service and companionship will always be needed. Helping those around us in and out of our high school careers is the true embodiment of Key Club. Taking our love of service and our passion to create a better community around us past our years in school are what carry the traditions of Key Club down to future generations. Service truly never goes extinct with the dedication and passion given by both Kiwanis and Key Clubs around the country.”

“Service Never Goes Extinct!”

According to our President, Enrique Mata, the new dinosaur theme is “an amazing idea presented by Molly Sheffield. I loved this idea and am so glad that others of you enjoyed it as well. The dinosaur theme in my opinion is really adorable and is going to have an amazing shirt to go along with it! I am really excited for this year and cannot wait for our new style”. In addition, our Vice President, Vinnie Kendrick comments that he “can't wait to revolve our club's design around these prehistoric creatures for the upcoming 2018-2019 year. We have amazing plans for not only our shirt design, but for a scrapbook and more,” and is excited to “achieve our upcoming goals this school year!” So there you’ve heard it, our new theme is coming to life (although not in a Jurassic Park style, of course), and our board is already working on new shirt and scrapbook designs! We cannot wait to incorporate this playful and archaic theme into our service and club this year.

Better Mark Your Calendars! By Emily Klein

O

ne thing that is a constant stress factor in our highschool lives is time. How are we supposed to read the first five chapters of Moby Dick and complete the biology project we might have procrastinated too

long on and finish a map of Antarctica for geography and do the algebra homework AND go to an after-school service project all in one night? We as a board are well aware of these anxieties, so we have tried to come up with faster, stress-free service projects to ensure you get your hours in, homework done, and three or four hours of sleep. 

Snak Pak 4 Kids – A long time classic, this project takes place at least twice a month for an hour immediately after school just a mile down the road. Here, we start off by stocking containers with snacks and breaking down cardboard boxes. Once done, we fill individual plastic sacks with food and snacks down an assembly line. On average, we fill anywhere from 300-500 sacks each day, and the sense of accomplishment afterwards is a reward in itself.

Ronald McDonald House – On the third week of each month, our Key

Club cooks a meal for our local Ronald McDonald House, and there are two ways to get hours from this project. You can either bring an ingredient on the list to school and drop it off with people who are going, or you yourself can go to the House and help cook the meal there. Both of these are rewarding experiences, and cooking there is one of my favorite projects. 

Family Service Center – The Family Service Center is a great service opportunity because you get to work first-hand with the people you are serving. You might get to work in the kitchen, where you specially prepare a sack for each family, or you could work in the clothing section, where you help people find clothes that are the right sizes for them and their families. This is also a project that happens at the same time every month. We know that teachers don’t always schedule tests and projects

with other events and practices in mind, so we have tried to give you many opportunities that you can put permanently on your calendar, so “I was too busy” can never be an excuse to not have your hours!
