EDITOR’S NOTE

Editor’s Note Hey Key Clubbers! I hope you’re all had a wonderful thanksgiving this November. I can’t believe this semester is almost over! We didn’t have as many events this November as we usually do, but no worries! December has many Christmas themed service projects that are dedicated to giving. Yours in Service, Chantha Dalena Le

Key Club Week

September 14, 2017

During Key Club week, we had many service inspire events. We wanted the week to be fun to inspire and include all members of the club while bringing attention to the school that our group exists. I hope Key Club week brought attention to the importance of service at my school.

Monday: We kicked off the week by delivering apples to teachers in the morning. Many of the teachers were very grateful to receive an apple. Tuesday: After our board meeting, we hosted a campus clean up. It was inspiring to see members bare the cold to clean. Wednesday: Along with wearing our club shirts, we also invited members to bring a friend to the general meetings. At the meetings, members were also given a random act of kindness to accomplish sometime during the week. Thursday: We happily prepared and attended dinner with our local kiwanis. Friday: We wore tie dye to school. Also, members were expected to achieve their random act of kindness by this day. 05

Member of the Month By JJ Castillo

I was very grateful in receiving student of the month for Key Club. Participating in an abundant amount of activities was so much fun! While volunteering for activities, I would have so much fun that the time would just fly by. Because of the way the time flew, I volunteered for more and more. In doing so, I received the member of the month award. One of the many events I volunteered for was SnackPak 4 kids. I really enjoyed volunteering for this organization because everyone there is super nice and helpful. The people there make volunteering easy and enjoyable. Also, one of the things that make volunteering there feel worth it, is the fact that I get the chance to help kids in need. Another event I participated in during the October month was the chamber of flavors, which I have to say was probably my favorite one. While performing our task of picking up trash and taking trash bags out of trash cans, we were lucky to be able to, at the same

time, listen to some very talented bands and singing groups. Also we got to enjoy free delicious food from many restaurants that were there. Joining key club was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made this year. All thanks to my persuasive friends who convinced me to join. Thanks to them I was able to meet a ton of new people. Which I am glad I did, because everyone has their own background story about their lives and I heard some pretty fascinating stories. I am proud to be in Key Club because of who we are and what we do. That is to better the community around us and to help those in need.

O

n November 14, Key clubbers joined together at a warehouse that always stores the items for

SnackPak. SnackPak 4 Kids in Canyon occurs typically the second week of every month. The program is run by a local nonprofit organization known as Canyon Hope Ministries. The program provides packs of food each weekend of the school year to elementary, intermediate, junior, and high school students. SnackPak runs purely on volunteers, delivered to schools and sent home with students every Friday. This program is very important because many of the kids who receive a SnackPak do not have the opportunity to eat until the following Monday at school if it weren’t for this amazing program.

SnackPak

While we are there, we usually are joined by other organizations varying from Canyon and Amarillo. Together, we unbox packaged or canned food such as rice krispies, ravioli, and animal crackers. We then sort these into their own individual giant containers until all the food that is being distributed is sorted. Once the containers are filled, we then form an assembly line to fill the bags. At one end, we have the person who starts the bags, and at the other, the person tying and counting the total of bags. In between these two people, we have lines of people on each side of the table filling in items.

Additionally, I believe that SnackPak 4 Kids Canyon is a very impactful service project to be part of. It is amazing to see that it runs only on volunteer service, meaning they always have enough volunteers to keep it running. Also, I know many kids in my school district and in my own school who are thankful for the SnackPaks they are given. When I fill the bags with items, I know I could be helping the person I sit next to in math class, my younger brother’s best friend, or a stranger I see in the hallway. With SnackPak 4 Kids in Canyon, I am impacting students just like myself.

Although this sounds uneventful, I often take this as an opportunity to get to know the people around me. I don’t often attend SnackPak because it takes place on a school day; however, when I do, I am always surrounded with new faces from our club. While we work, I try to joke around with the people around me and make the experience fun for all of us. It’s really nice to be able to get to know more people from my club as well because I find that I am often only attending the same events as my friends. But attending SnackPak, I am given the opportunity to meet others while helping the community.
