Let’s Fundraise! By Chloe Ashton
The key club year we implemented a new type of regulation and planning for our club. They were committees, committees could have multiple options for what they are in charge of. For our club we had many different ones, some designated to socials and other things. I was a part of the fundraising committee and then promoted to the head of the committee. This happened due to the fact the original head of the committee, our vice president, had to move away suddenly. Our vice president left about half way into the first semester, and it was about another month of waiting until I was appointed to my new position. Once in this position I was really unsure what to do, it took me a while to get my affairs in order. Then I had a few ideas on organizing events for the club to participate in, but we had a few bumps in the road which included preparing for finals. Originally around Christmas time the former head of the committee had planned to sell popcorn from a local business. Unfortunately, due to lack of planning on my part and lack of communication we were unable to go through with this project. We originally had another prospect lined up, a pancake breakfast in which the club would keep a percentage of the ticket sales. Again, just due to lack of preparedness on my part this fell through as well. These many inconclusive projects had me feeling down and thinking I had let the people down in my club because we still did not have a fundraiser this year. This feeling stayed with as I drifted further into my endless school work and other commitments, I feared I was not a good choice for this position at all. I had these feeling up until a few weeks ago, I decided

no more feeling like this I was going to take action. So, one Saturday I decided I could try and get some planning in for some potential fundraisers. First, I went to the local popcorn place that was supposed to host our original fundraiser, I was not able to get much information at the business, but they promised to call me later in the week with more details. That was now a waiting game. The same day I went to a very successful candle company in town, we had talks of using them as fundraiser raiser before and I was there to get the details of how everything would work. The lady who owns the company was very informative and experienced in this process and had worked with other schools and clubs in the past. After I gathered all the necessary info I needed I called a fundraising meeting together to share my ideas with the others in the group and our sponsor. We had a very productive session, other members also had idea they wanted to share as well. I shared my knowledge about the popcorn and candle company, I even had samples of the candles we could be possibly selling. The meeting was a huge success, from it we decided to focus mainly the candles and moving the popcorn sails to another day. We also plan to sell car wash coupons, finals survival kits, and have a Blue Sky night where some of the total profits go to the club. The next couple months are full of opportunities.

On February 14, 2018, a shooter opened fire on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The gunman opened fire and killed 17 people that day, including both students and faculty. When I first heard about the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, I was distraught. I was able to emphasize with those teens because they were just like me. All of them high schoolers, and some of them seniors, like I am, just about ready to graduate high school and get on with the rest of their lives. However, that school shooting changed everything.
Parkland, FL By Chantha Le
February 14th was supposed to be a day to celebrate love and appreciation for others. It was a holiday, a celebration. Sadly, for students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the day did not continue that way. For hours after i heard the news, I researched what had happened. Rather than letting this event fade into the back of my mind, I wanted to learn the facts. I watched videos and read articles especially about the students, teachers, and families affected. A few seniors just had their lives ahead of themselves, completely prepared to go to college and pursue their dreams. Others were only freshmen, new to this world of high school and just barely beginning their young adult lives. When we had our next board meeting, my club decided to create cards and such to let the students know we were thinking of them and wishing the best for them. Our club sponsor informed us that just like us, some of the students who had passed that day were also key club members. Of course, that signified to our club that this was a cause very close to all of us. We were able to connect
talk about how these students could relate to us. They most likely had similar interests, beliefs, and personalities as the group of us on board. Personally, I believe that the terrible incident that happened in Parkland should’ve never happened. I believe that it could’ve been and should’ve been prevented. However, that was not the case. I will keep this accident, and those affected by it, in my mind and close to heart when I continue to serve my community and everyone I come into contact with. I hope that others will keep this event in their mind as well and will do whatever they can possible to prevent it from happening again.
