Help for Two Oaks

t’s been part of Berkhamsted since 2006 – but every year Two Oaks Pony Sanctuary on Darrs Lane in Northchurch faces the risk of closure due to lack of funds. Carolann Buchorksi opened the sanctuary 13 years ago. She runs the place single-handedly, with help from generous volunteers, but needs regular help to keep the place open. ‘I love running this place, but the financial strain is enormous,’ says Carolann. ‘With horses and ponies, goats, pigs, sheep, geese and

ow in its 10th year, the 2019 Tringe festival line-up looks set to be bigger and better than ever! Running for three weeks from 30 June until 20 July, the proceedings will kick off with Roving Comedy nights around Tring. Featuring comedy routines from professionals as well as 12 local performers who have trained for eight weeks under the guidance of Logan Murray (responsible for training Greg Davies, Rhod Gilbert and Josh Widdicombe!), you can catch the comedy at one of four pubs in town: The Robin Hood, The Black Horse, The Castle or the Kings Arms. The Tringe Festival begins the following day at The Court Theatre. This year stars performing include Milton Jones, Josie Long, Ed Byrne, Olaf Falafel and Romesh Ranganathan – although tickets sell out fast so don’t hang about! But they still need more regular support, which is why Carolann has set up a brand new ‘Superstars’ scheme, asking people to donate £10, £5 or £1 a month by standing order. ‘People can donate as much or as little as they can afford – it all helps pay for our feed and hay,’ she explains. he police do a brilliant job at patrolling the streets of Berkhamsted and Northchurch. But they can’t be everywhere all of the time – and so they’re calling on us to help them too. Saddle up for Horse Combat S

ometimes you hear about a local business that’s so fascinating you wonder how you’ve never heard about it before. The Centre of Horseback Combat is based in Gaddesden, in the grounds of a stunning and historical 2000 acre estate. ‘We have several strings to our bow,’ explains co-owner Zana Cousins-Greenwood. ‘We provide

stunt horses for TV shows and films, we appear at many festivals and events, and we run training courses in skills such as Traditional Horseback Archery, stunt riding as well as Rider Confidence courses.’ Zana and her husband Karl Greenwood set up the Centre six years ago, and since then it’s grown enormously. ‘People visit us from all over the world, and the Team GB Dzhigitova (Cossack trick riding) train here too.’ Some of the courses look amazing and, if you’re confident on horseback you’ll have great fun. he Ashlyns Festival is back – and Living Magazines are delighted to be supporting it! The two-day celebration in the magnificent grounds of Ashlyns School has something for everyone – and the whole thing aims to raise money for the students, the school and the wider community facilities on site. On Friday 12 July there’s a Comedy and Curry Night with a fantastic line-up of comedians, as well as mouthwatering curries from the Fat Buddha. There will also be a full bar. The following day there will be live music across two stages, a large bar marquee serving locally brewed beer and a Gin and Pimms tent. There will also be a wide range of food from local suppliers, as well as a family area with games,

Berkhamsted in the Media ‘The first system [of new eco doors] will be tested at the Waitrose store in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, next month and rolled-out to all 353 of its supermarkets later this year if successful. But he said: “It will be a huge challenge as years of chemo gave my body a battering.” And he is raising money for the charity that supported him through his illness — the Teenage Cancer Trust.’ The Mirror, 27 April 2019, about Ben Atkins, who ran the marathon after beating cancer. ‘Compiling this list doesn’t get any easier. In fact, it gets harder. How do you decide between Berkhamsted and Belfast, Montgomery and Mull? Club night brings Tring alive! A

regular club night is bringing a bit of excitement to Tring – and is proving to be a big success! HouseMouse, run by Housemousemusic, a local electronic dance music collective, turned up the heat at The Court Theatre last month – and will be doing it all again later this year. The group’s main aims are to: have fun; provide a safe environment for house music lovers; offer a platform for local electronic dance music DJs; and, most importantly, raise money for charity. Dance the night away with an amazing mix of house dance music, melodic techno and

fabulous pyrotechnics, as well as pole dancing sets from spectacular dancers. The last event raised £250 for Hector’s House, and the same for international young people’s charity Last Night A DJ Saved My Life – two worthy causes close to the hearts of the organisers. Cooking up a storm!

usband and wife team The Cook Partnership in Tring are celebrating 20 years in the town – and are thrilled to still be there! Established by David Cook in August 1999, the chartered accountancy firm has gone from strength to strength since it opened the doors of its very first office. ‘My wife Pam and I both worked in London and when we moved to Ivinghoe in 1998 I realised I couldn’t bear the commute any more,’ says David. So the following year he set up on his own. ‘To begin with I just had a few clients and worked from an office above my garage,’ he says. Over the next few years the business grew steadily and in 2005 David moved to the Akeman Business Park, where the company stayed for more than seven years.

‘During that time we had three children and Pam decided to stop working in London and join the firm,’ David says. In 2013, now with four members of staff, they moved to their current office on the Icknield Industrial Estate in Tring. ‘We’re so happy to have been working in and around Tring for 20 years,’ says David. ‘We love the close-knit community and camaraderie of the town.’ They also sponsor events such as the Tringe comedy festival and the Tring Fun Run. ‘It’s a lovely town and it’s important to give back. ‘And even though Pam and I have been living and working together for more than 20 years, we’re still friends!’

PEDAL POWER Clare Swatman chatted to Berkhamsted cyclist Mike Broadwith

Who is Mike? A maths teacher, a family man with four young children – and a champion cyclist with a World Record under his belt for the ‘End to End’ Land’s End to John O’Groats ride.

hen I ask Mike how he manages to keep cycling for hours on end, he tells me ‘it’s because I’m a simple man’. Having spent a while chatting to him, I can confirm this certainly is not true. But what probably does help him keep going is that he doesn’t over-analyse things. Mike got into competitive cycling relatively late in life, after leaving university. He started racing at the Velodrome in Welwyn and it turned out he was pretty good; between 2001 and 2006 he raced most weeks, reaching the top 10 in the National Championships and fourth in the National 100 mile Championship. Then in 2006 Mike decided he’d had enough. ‘My wife Helen and I went travelling, and when we came back Helen was pregnant and I just didn’t feel like going back to competitive cycling,’ he says. From then the only cycling Mike did was his daily 40-mile round commute to work – 200 miles a week - which kept him fit.

It wasn’t until his second son was born in 2011 that he started to think about trying his hand at competitive cycling again. ‘I just had a niggle in the back of my mind that I could probably still do pretty well,’ he says. Then a phone call from a friend asking him to make up a three-person race sealed his fate. ‘I agreed – and to my amazement we won bronze,’ says Mike. He had the bug again. ‘I decided that I’d like to start doing events at a high level again, but just concentrate on one or two a year.’ Fortunately Helen was supportive, and in 2013 he entered the National 100 mile Championship and came fourth. A friend suggested he should try the 24-hour race. ‘I realised I was better at longer distances because I had the stamina, but not necessarily the speed needed for the shorter races,’ he says. And so in 2015 he went for it – and won! ‘I didn’t really stop for the whole 24 hours,’ Mike says. ‘I raced for eight hours, had a three minute break, then carried on.’ The measure of a good competitor in that race is if they can cover 500 miles in the 24 hours. Mike managed 537 miles. The following year Mike did the race as part of a team, and they won again. www.livingmags.info

‘People kept telling me I should do the End to End race, from Land’s End to John O’Groats,’ Mike says. ‘But I felt it would be arrogant to even try.’ It was Helen who encouraged him in the end. ‘She just said I should give it a go.’ And finally, on 15 June last year, Mike started the biggest challenge of his life. ‘I set off at 8am on the Friday,’ he says. ‘By that afternoon I was in the Midlands and by the evening I was in Scotland. ‘The hardest thing was adjusting mentally. The longest I’d ever cycled was 24 hours. This time I completed 24 hours and still had almost the same to go again. It was tough.’ By the time Mike reached Inverness, he was ready to give up. ‘I was cold and soaked to the skin and just didn’t think I could do any more,’ he recalls. ‘Helen told me to just try another 20 minutes – and it pushed me through the barrier.’ Mike finished in 43 hours and 25 minutes – five minutes faster than he’d hoped – and 31 minutes

faster than the previous World Record! ‘It felt amazing,’ he says. But is that it now? Mike’s not so sure. ‘There are week-long races across Europe, but that’s a whole different thing. I think Helen would be really worried, because I don’t always know when I need to stop. ‘Plus with four children now, it would be a real feat to even organise something like that. ‘I don’t push the kids into cycling,’ Mike says. ‘I just like them to see that sport can be fun. Cycling is part of my life, and I think that teaches them a healthy lesson.’ Who knows what the future holds for Mike. But whatever he decides to do, we wish him the best of luck!

RECIPE

LEMON AND RASPBERRY SWISS ROLL

Ingredients: • For the sponge • 3 large eggs • 125g caster sugar • 125g plain flour • finely grated zest of lemon

For filling: • 150ml double cream • 125g mascarpone • 5tsp caster sugar • 6-8tbsp good quality lemon curd • 125g fresh raspberries

> Using the paper to help, roll up the sponge as tightly as possible. > Place on a serving plate, dust with icing sugar and decorate with extra raspberries. Try other fruit and flavour combinations like lime and blueberry, orange and strawberry or traditional vanilla with a mix of your favourite seasonal berries.

- 35cm x 25cm Swiss roll tin - Oven 200C/Gas 5/fan oven 180C > Preheat the oven and line cake tin with baking parchment. > Whisk the eggs and sugar with an electric mixer until the mixture leaves a good trail. > Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold in, followed by the lemon zest. > Pour into the prepared tin and spread into the corners. > Bake for 10-12 mins. > Dust a large piece of greaseproof paper with caster sugar. Turn the cooked sponge out onto the sheet of sugared paper and carefully peel off the lining paper. Trim off the two long edges. > Starting from one short end, fold over the greaseproof paper and roll up the cake with the paper inside the Swiss roll. Leave on a rack to cool. > Make the filling by beating the mascarpone with the caster sugar and in a separate bowl whip the double cream to form soft peaks. Carefully fold the sweetened mascarpone into the cream. > When fully cooled unroll the Swiss roll and spread with the lemon curd. Then spread with the cream mix and scatter with the raspberries (gently squeeze each raspberry between your finger and thumb to flatten slightly, this will make it easier to roll up the sponge).

How do you cope if your grown-up children come back home to live?

he kids have left home and you’re rattling around the house wondering what to do with yourself. But what if, after finishing university, or returning from travelling around the world, they’ve decided to move back in? Over the last 20 years the number of ‘boomerang children’ – those who fly the nest but return several years later – has soared, so that now more than a quarter of those aged 24-30 are still living with their parents. Round here, of course, property prices are so high that it’s hardly surprising young people can’t afford to buy or rent their own place, hence cases of boomerang children are much higher in London and the south-east than anywhere else in the country. But is it a problem, and how do you cope when your not-so-little ones come back to live in the family home? For Susan Dobinson, mother of two grown-up children, a Humanist, Wedding, Funeral and Naming Celebrant from Berkhamsted, having her 28-year-old son living back at home meant they all had to make some adjustments.

‘David had lived and worked away for some years when he decided he didn’t enjoy the corporate world and wanted to retrain to be a primary school teacher,’ says Susan. ‘He was 25 and it meant a huge change for him, but we supported him.’ David moved back home and they had a brief conversation about how it would work. ‘It wasn’t enough,’ admits Susan. ‘There’s a lot to get used to, having another adult in the house. ‘There was the untidiness and the noisiness for us, and the lack of privacy for all of us. Finally, two months after he moved back in we sat down and laid down some proper ground rules. Now he helps around the house and in the garden, and walks the dogs. It works much better. ‘He’s dependent on us financially because he’s training, but the plan is for him to move out as soon as he can, once he’s finished. We’re very close but it was important for us all that we knew there was a time limit to it.’

KIDS The golden rules of living with your grown-up children If your adult children want to move back home, you might be thrilled. But even if you’re looking forward to having them around again, it’s important to remember that they’re no longer children but independent adults, and that your relationship will be quite different this time around. Beth Parmar, a parent and child coach from Berkhamsted, offers some advice on how to make it work. ‘The most important thing is setting down the ground rules before they even set foot inside the house,’ she says. ‘If you don’t, no matter how close you are, it will end up causing resentment and tension, and nobody wants that.’ The key points are: • Communication It’s essential to communicate how you’re feeling before resentment arises. If you’re fed up with dirty dishes lying around, you expect them to pay their fair share towards the household expenses, or want them to cook a meal at least once a week, tell them. Neither of you are mind readers and it’s easier to talk about it than to seethe. • Ground rules Laying out ground rules before they move back is essential to avoid problems later. Sort out financial arrangements if need be – if you expect them to pay a percentage of their wage for their keep, then say so. If you want them to do certain jobs around the house, make it clear from the start. You might not cover everything, but if you keep the lines of communication open then other things can be discussed later. • Respect for each other You’ve been used to having your own space and so have they, so it’s important to respect each other’s privacy and needs. If you have enough space maybe you could create a room just for them to use, especially if their friends come

round, or give them a TV in their bedroom so they can have some time on their own. Make sure you don’t let their habits and ways of doing things get in the way of yours, but also ensure you’re not just sniping about it behind their back if they’re not doing as you’d expect. • Work out a long term goal You don’t necessarily have to say ‘when are you leaving?’ the minute they walk through the door, but it’s important to establish a goal for them moving back out as soon as you can. If their goal is to save a certain amount of money for a deposit, then help them work out a way of saving that money. If the end goal is a timescale one – for example they’ve gone back to college or want to move back for a year or so – make sure you don’t leave it open-ended. If you make it too comfortable for them to stay they’ll never leave – and never learn to stand on their own two feet. www.bethparmar.co.uk.

THE RAW FOOD DEBATE Feeding cats and dogs raw food is on the rise – but are you putting your family at risk?

ver the last few years the number of people feeding their pets raw food has risen significantly, with freezer sections full of raw meat, bones and organs springing up in most supermarkets. Known as the BARF diet, which stands for ‘bones and raw food’, it’s claimed that it’s more like the food animals would have eaten years ago in the wild, and that it therefore has significant health benefits over processed, cooked food. However, not everyone agrees. In 2018, Dutch scientists discovered that a high percentage of the raw meat they tested contained food poisoning bugs, including E. coli, listeria and salmonella. Many also contained parasites such as Toxoplasma, which can cause significant harm to babies. Any raw meat you buy has a risk of containing these, but most bugs are killed in the cooking process. By feeding your pets raw food, there is a risk that the bugs can be passed on to you and your family. Now, though, there is even more reason to be worried, thanks to a recent discovery – because more than 40 cats nationwide have been diagnosed with TB, which has been traced back to one source of raw food.

‘The truth is, our pets are very, very far from being the wild animals they once were when they would have eaten raw meat like this,’ says Patrick Dale from Springwell Vets in Tring. ‘They’re domesticated animals now, and their needs are very different. ‘For a long time I’ve been wary about the risks of feeding pets raw food. I rarely see any difference in the health of a pet fed a raw food diet and one that’s fed a conventional diet – and at the same time there are risks of contracting salmonella or E. coli. But with this new risk, it’s all become a lot more serious. ‘TB is a serious infectious disease. One cat who contracts it can pass it easily on to any other pets in the house. But, more worryingly, it can also be passed on to humans – particularly the elderly and young children who are more vulnerable.’ In fact this is so serious, Patrick says, that legal proceedings are likely to be carried out against the pet food company involved. And while those in favour continue to maintain that raw food is perfectly safe if handled properly, Patrick believes it’s too dangerous to dismiss. ‘I would never feed raw, and the veterinary profession as a whole does not justify raw feeding,’ he says. Danielle Gunn-Moore from the University of Edinburgh agrees. ‘I’m not against the concept of raw feeding per se – it could lead to environmental enrichment for the pet. But it would have to be proven to be nutritionally sound and guaranteed to be free from infectious diseases. While the first has been achieved by some pet food manufacturers, we don’t know how the latter can be achieved, and that’s what concerns me as now we are seeing cases of bovine TB infection in Britain.’

Woodland retreat For a real autumnal feel, embrace the woodland retreat trend that you’ll find in all the shops this season. Mix rich colours, including berries, bark and bramble, with chunky wool knits, such as rugs and throws, and woodland animal prints. Dried flowers will complete the look. To get the look without having to give your room a complete overhaul, try these simple ideas: • gather some pine cones and put them in a bowl or clear vase on your coffee table/sideboard • gather twigs and small branches and put them in a vase instead of a flower display • buy or find a log stump to use as a side table • throw a faux fur throw over your chair or sofa.

Hot colours There are a couple of colours which are proving extremely popular this year – and they’re very different! 1) Mustard It can be used on its own, or teamed with rich jewel colours to create a statement. However you choose to use it, mustard is one of the hottest colours in interiors right now. Go bold with something like the Dulux Honey Mustard shade, or tone it down with their colour of the season, Dulux Spiced Honey. It’s the perfect shade to paint a whole wall or ceiling. If you’re not feeling too brave, try a block of colour, or go for a piece of furniture or soft furnishings, such as cushions or a throw, in mustard. 2) Rusty Rosy Pink This, says Emma, is another key colour this season. ‘Mixed with brass and gold or cool silver and geometric wallpaper, this is the perfect colour to achieve an art deco/geometric feel and add a warm glow to any room.’

A MAN’S GUIDE TO THE MENOPAUSE

Yes, you read that right – this is the MAN’S guide to the menopause! Every single woman goes through it, yet it’s barely talked about. Here we give a man’s guide to the menopause to help you give her the support she needs.

ou’ve heard of it, but aside from mood changes in your other half you’re not really sure what it is, or why it’s happening, right? Well worry no more, because we’re here to help. Every woman on the planet will go through the menopause at some point– usually around the age of 45-55, but sometimes earlier and sometimes later. And it can have an enormous effect. Here are the main things you need to know to help her navigate the change as smoothly and happily as possible.

What is the menopause? You probably know most of this, but just to be clear, the menopause is a natural part of ageing that means a woman’s hormone levels are falling. Oestrogen levels drop as the ovaries stop working, so the brain sends thermal surges through the body in an attempt to get them to work again. By the end, she will no longer get any periods, but the road towards this point can be rocky as falling hormone levels cause all kinds of physical and emotional changes.

How long does it last? This is a bit of a ‘how long is a piece of string?’ question. The truth is it can, and usually does, last for several years. During this time symptoms are likely to come and go, so you need to be prepared for it not to go away overnight. During this time she is referred to as peri-menopausal.

What are the main symptoms? One of the main symptoms is mood swings. Just as you may have noticed an increase in moodiness around the time of her period, the 28 / Berkhamsted Living

changing hormone levels can often cause the same issues during the menopause as well. So if she’s started flying off the handle at small things, try and be understanding. She won’t be enjoying feeling this way any more than you’re enjoying being on the receiving end; it can be very disconcerting and frightening. It can also cause her to be more emotional and cry at the drop of a hat. It can even cause depression. If it gets that bad then it may be time to suggest she sees a doctor, but only you can be the judge of that. Tread carefully! Other symptoms include palpitations, hot flushes and night sweats. Sadly, a lower libido is also a common symptom. Lowered hormone levels make the problem two-fold: firstly, it means a lowered libido; but it also means that the tissue around the vagina can become thinner, which can cause pain. Skin changes and sometimes weight gain can also be symptoms, which only serve to make her feel worse rather than better about herself.

Will things ever get better? The short answer is YES! For most women, hormones do settle and things return to normal eventually.

What can I do to help? You’re doing it! Just by reading this and trying to understand what she’s going through, you’re helping. For most women, the menopause can be scary and worrying because the way she feels is so out of her control. So although you might want to scream back when she screams at you for no apparent reason, if you can try and be kind, she will appreciate it. www.livingmags.info

We put a brand new treatment to the test

Before

ost of us dream of looking younger without having to go under the knife, don’t we? As we age, our skin thins and produces less collagen, all of which combines to make our skin look older and more wrinkled. Plasma Pen treatment is a brand new treatment which works in lots of different ways; it tightens skin almost instantly, while also working underneath the skin to help it produce more collagen to give effects which last for years. So, when I was given the chance to try it out, I was hardly going to refuse now was I? Penny Cook, owner of Penelope Plasma, was kind enough to offer the treatment to both me and our publisher, Alison. Here’s how we got on. .

Under-eye area and crow’s feet

I was the guinea pig and had the treatment first. When Penny explained that there was a period of a few days following the treatment when I’d look less than my best, while a crust formed on the treated area, I was a little nervous. I have to do the school run every day and it was only March – hardly sunglasses weather! She explained the treatment in detail and then we arranged for her to come round one evening. She set up the couch in my living room and got to work. First she numbed the area she was going to treat and, while that kicked in, set up her Plasma Pen. Then I was ready to go! I wasn’t sure what to expect. In some places I couldn’t feel the laser at all, while in others it felt sore and Penny stopped to apply more numbing cream. It took roughly 20 minutes per eye, but I felt at ease because Penny was so professional. She pre-warned me that it gave off an odd burning smell so I was prepared – but it’s a little disconcerting!

TRIED & TESTED

TRIED AND TESTED: PLASMA PEN TREATMENT Immediately afterwards the area under my eyes was covered in tiny dots, but it looked more taut than it had done in years. The next day it was a little swollen and I hid behind my sunglasses. In fact, I had to hibernate for about five days until I felt comfortable taking my glasses off in public. You can’t apply creams or make-up to it while it heals, but Penny does give you Aloe Vera gel, which takes away much of the tightness and swelling. The feeling is a little bit like mild sunburn, but no worse. By day six most of the crust had disappeared completely and I was even able to apply a bit of make-up to the area. It looked pretty good. Tightening continues to improve over the next 12 weeks, as more collagen is produced. By week five I could already see a reduction in the crow’s feet and wrinkles under my eyes – there had been one line that had been particularly deep that I only noticed when I took a photo just before the treatment, and that has already improved dramatically. I’m very pleased with the result, although I do think for optimum results I’d probably need a second treatment after the 12 weeks are up. Who knows, I might just go for it!

Interestingly, Alison chose to have her treatment on her jawline and the recovery was much longer than under the eyes. She also suffered some sort of allergic reaction, although we’re not sure what to. f this summer proves to be anything like the summer of 2018, we’ll all be glad of the little oases we call our back gardens. But if you’re planning to spend a lot more time in your garden this summer, how do you make sure you get the most out of it? It’s not just a matter of getting a few nice seats and lights out there any more. These days, there are so many amazing ways of bringing your garden to life, that it almost becomes a room in itself!

‘These are much more modern than a conservatory. The glass is triple-glazed and they retain heat in the winter and don’t overheat so much in the summer. The huge panels of glass also mean you get great views all around.’ With the weather so unpredictable, this is a great way to make the most of space in your garden.

Glass rooms A far cry from the traditional conservatory, glass rooms are one of the latest trends, and a great way to make more of your garden space. ‘Essentially these are glass cubes, which can either be attached to your house or entirely separate in another part of the garden, but mean you can use that part of the garden all year round no matter what the weather,’ explains Helen Reeley from Helen Reeley Gardens in Berkhamsted.

Outdoor kitchens Forget barbecues – they’re so last century! The latest thing for gardens is the outdoor kitchen. ‘These are so much more than just a source of heat to cook on,’ explains Helen, who says that more and more people are asking for kitchens to be incorporated into their garden designs.

GARDENS ‘They usually have cupboards for storage, a fridge for drinks, work surfaces, pizza ovens, rotisserie ovens – everything you could need and more – such as this one by garden designer Craig McGibbon. The idea is that you don’t need to keep going in and out all the time and can do everything outside, making the most of the garden.’

Pods Another option, if you don’t want to be entirely glassed in, is what is known as a ‘louvred pod’. Either as a stand-alone pod, or something attached to the house, these are essentially pergolas with louvred roof systems, where tilting blades close electronically when the heavens open. ‘With the weather in the UK, these are a great solution,’ says Helen. ‘I love them, because it means you can spend more time in the garden even when it starts to rain.’

Fire pits Traditional patio heaters are extremely bad for the environment and, Helen says, have never been a popular choice for home gardens anyway. The latest trend is a fire pit or chiminea – these are a great way of keeping your seating area warm and toasty long into the evening.

Awnings Awnings are a more cost-effective way of making your garden weather-proof. ‘There are some really good quality, affordable electronic awnings these days,’ says Helen. ‘And because it’s just a roof without sides, it means you can cook and have fire pits under them quite safely.’

Seating In terms of seating, it’s best to stay away from plastic, as it not only doesn’t last long, but we’re increasingly becoming more aware of the damaging effect of plastic on the environment. ‘Wood can be left outside treated or untreated, depending on how you want it to look,’ says Helen. ‘Stainless steel is a good option too, as it lasts well.

But, just as you’d want comfort if you were sitting in your dining room, you want to be comfortable sitting outside too, so it’s essential to put cushions and throws on chairs.’

Lighting Lighting can be as pricey or as inexpensive as you want and still be effective. ‘You don’t want to light up your seating area too much,’ explains Helen. ‘It’s more about lighting up the surrounding area, such as uplighting a tree for example, and then using softer lamps and lanterns for the seating area. ‘You can choose to have it all properly wired in by an electrician, with lights that dim, change colour, go on and off as you move round the garden; or you can choose something simpler such as fairy lights around a tree or solar lamps along a path,’ says Helen. ‘Both look lovely and make the garden at night feel more special.’

Water features ‘People are increasingly asking for water features in their garden for a really relaxing feel – but you do have to be careful about the noise they make, as some can be so loud they’re a distraction,’ says Helen. ‘One of the nicest, most soothing water features is a bronze resin pool, which has gentle bubbles rippling the surface and means there isn’t the constant sound of running water, but is subtle and tasteful. Comfort As the temperature drops and the light goes down, it’s essential to keep warm if you want to stay outdoors. ‘Make sure you have a good stash of blankets and cushions, so you don’t have to decamp inside as soon as it cools down,’ says Helen. www.reeleylandscapes.co.uk

WALKS 1

his the fifth in our series of dog-friendly local walks and starts in the centre of Berkhamsted. The walk climbs steeply towards Kingshill Way, crosses underneath the A41, before crossing back over at Swingate Lane. It then follows a track which descends to the A4251 and returns along the Grand Union Canal towpath. The route is mainly on footpaths and enjoys several excellent views over the countryside. There is the option of extending the walk from 3.6 miles (5.8km) to 5.5 miles (8.9km) to Bourne End. There are several seats and numerous refreshments stops in Berkhamsted. Berkhamsted High Street is the start of the walk and has been an important thoroughfare since before the time of the Romans, and was known by its Saxon name of Akeman St. Later it was known as Sparrows Herne Turnpike Trust and was an important toll road. Along the High St (173) is the oldest known ‘jettied’ timber-framed building in

the country, built in the late 13th century. (Sterling’s estate agent today) (see photo). Berkhamsted Castle is one of 2 its most famous landmarks. The walk goes down Prince Edward Street, which originally led from the Castle to the town archery practice ground, Butts Meadow, formerly known as the Buttericks or the Buttfield. Berkhamsted was the favourite home of the 14th century Prince Edward, the Black Prince and coincided with the peak of the development of the Longbow as a weapon of war. The walk goes through Butts Meadow to Tompkins Meadow, where the 19th century butcher of the same name grazed his delivery horses. Later the walk goes along The Grand Junction Canal, which played an important part in

Berkhamsted’s industrial history. Evidence can be seen along this walk. Francis Egerton, Duke of Bridgewater (the Canal Duke), father of the inland waterway system, lived in Ashridge. The Grand Junction Canal from the Thames at Brentford to Berkhamsted was completed in 1798 and continued all the way to Birmingham in 1805. Berkhamsted linked the estuaries, ports and industrial centres of the country. Canals provided a faster and cheaper method of transporting raw materials and manufactured goods. However, with the development of the railways in the 19th century, the power of the canals declined. Under its later name, The Grand Union Canal, it continued to be used as a trade route until the early 1960s. There are various signs along the walk route providing more details of this history and the photograph shows one of the few buildings whose industrial heritage is still evident. The area known as Castle Wharf (The Port of Berkhamsted) was the centre of the town’s canal trade, navigation and boat building activities. Main activities included the transport of coal, grain, building materials and manure. Timber yards, boating wharves, breweries, boat building and chemical works and all the people that served these industries, flourished as a result of the canal. A genuine Canadian Kwakiutl totem pole is situated next to the canal opposite the Crystal Palace pub. It was erected in 1968 at Alsford’s Wharf, a former timber yard. The carving is a fertility symbol and legend has it that a woman wishing to conceive should visit and make three wishes for the child they dream of! The walk finishes past Berkhamsted School which was originally founded in 1544.

The longer route takes walkers past an iron post commemorating the Foundling Hospital, formerly at Ashlyn’s Hall. In 1935 the Foundling Hospital moved from London to an impressive new building on the Ashlyns Hall Estate in Berkhamsted, where it continued until 1955 and eventually became Ashlyns School. K2 I

love curry, but the ones I make at home either end up slightly bland or far too hot. So, when I go out for curry, I want something special – and the K2 in Hemel is definitely that. I’m also fairly hard to please when it comes to my curries, but I’d heard good things about the food at the K2, so I was hopeful. The restaurant is lovely. It’s huge so you’re not sitting on top of your neighbours, but even on a Tuesday night it had a real buzz – always a good sign. Our table overlooked the lush garden and we watched a heron land looking for its dinner. Later on, the lights made it even prettier. Now for the food. I ordered Paneer Tikka, one of my favourites, for starter, while my husband Tom had Aloo Tikki Ragda, which is spiced potato cakes with chickpeas and tamarind. Both were absolutely delicious, particularly the chickpeas. The main courses were Meen Moilee – sea bass poached in coconut and turmeric, and Dal Maharani – black lentils with fresh ginger, garlic and tomato. The Dal was absolutely stunning. The flavour was rich and had real depth. Tom told me the fish was lovely too; the flavours strong but not overpowering, with a good, solid, spicy taste. We were too full for dessert but we did manage

to sneak in a peshwari naan, which was just the way I like it – slightly crispy and very coconutty – and some pilau rice, washed down with a Cobra beer. Yum! The K2 pride themselves on their menu and I can honestly say I’ve never had a curry as nice as the Dal. The menu is interesting and different, although still has all the old favourites. A perfect meal, whatever night of the week.
