Read In Peace
T
he Rectory Lane Cemetery Project has a special challenge this Christmas – to raise enough money for their RIP (Read In Peace) reading seat. The seat will encircle a liquidambar tree and include a library shelf with books integrated into the design. ‘This is a very peaceful, special place to sit,’ says Community Engagement Officer, Kate Campbell. ‘The seat will complement the ongoing conservation and landscape work, and provide a wonderful spot for children and adults to take time out to read in peace.’ The project is taking part in a Christmas Challenge appeal with The Big Give, which brings together philanthropic champions and charities.
Berkhamsted in the Media Berkhamsted School in Hertfordshire said it has expanded its wellbeing support to families significantly. The Times, 2 October 2019 Bicknell decided to start up again in 2004 with Make Believe Ideas, after she was commissioned to make a range of 12 children’s titles. After 20 years of commuting to London, she set up in a basement near her home in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.’ The Times, 15 September 2019 Berkhamsted was also the focus of a new series on BBC called Escape to the Perfect Town, presented by Jonnie Irwin who lives here. It certainly looked very vibrant and pretty! The episode aired on 8 October.
Online donations need to be made during the Christmas Challenge week of 3-10 December. Donations will be matched by The Big Give, and all contributors’ names will be added to a Donation Book, kept in the library. Email Kate, the Community Engagement Officer, at campbellkate01@gmail.com, or to donate between 3-10 December, go to www.thebiggive.org.uk and choose ‘The Friends of St Peter’s Great Berkhamsted’.
Herts Year of Culture 2020 C ulture is taking centre stage during 2020, as part of a year-long campaign to showcase Hertfordshire’s creative opportunities. Hertfordshire Year of Culture 2020 (HYOC2020) will put the spotlight on arts, culture and heritage across the county, with activities, special events and experiences across the 12 themed months. We’ve gone compostable!
LOCAL
Y
ou spoke – and we listened. The plastic that has been used to wrap our magazine for years has, after much research into compostable alternatives, been banished for good! Like many other businesses, including the RSPB, we have switched to a new, more environmentally-friendly compostable wrap to bring your favourite, and only truly local, magazine straight to your door. Made from potato starch, there are three ways you can dispose of it: 1) Add it to your compost heap in your garden 2) Throw it into the green recycling bin along with your garden waste
Car park on course for completion
L
ike it or loathe it, there’s no denying that the new car park on Lower King’s Road is going up quickly now, and it’s due to be completed early in the new year. ‘Like with all things, the project is weather dependent,’ says Ben Hosier from Dacorum Borough Council. ‘But we’re hopeful it will be finished by the beginning of February.’ In the meantime, the temporary car park continues to suffer with drainage problems.
3) Carefully remove the magazine and use the empty bag in your food waste caddy. Please don’t put the wrap into your plastics recycling. We’re very pleased with our new wrap, and we hope you are too. ‘The ground holds water, so when it’s very wet it stays on the surface,’ adds Ben. ‘We were only able to use it on the condition we closed it if issues arose.’ There are also plans being discussed regarding the extra spaces being provided, and how many will be allocated for businesses as well as short stay and long stay spaces. Watch this space!
Don’t miss the Tring panto at the Court Theatre this year. Peter Pan runs from 27 December until 5 January! www.courttheatre.co.uk

New Hospital for Dacorum?
W
est Herts Hospitals NHS Trust (WHHT) has received funding to provide new hospital facilities – but there is disagreement about how it should be spent. WHHT believes the money needs to be spent upgrading current facilities, including the site at Watford. ‘We understand that the investment will be into current sites – for a major refurbishment and rebuild at Watford General Hospital, together with development for St Albans and Hemel Hempstead hospitals,’ says a spokesperson for West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust and Herts Valleys Clinical Commissioning Group (HVCCG). However not everyone agrees this is the best solution. Sir Mike Penning, Member of Parliament for Hemel Hempstead, says: ‘It will be a complete waste and an utter disaster to try to rebuild Watford on the existing site right next door to a Premier League football club in the Victorian back streets.’ Instead, he has backed the Dacorum Hospital Action Group and the New Hospital Campaign who are raising money to fund a judicial review of HVCCG and WHHT’s decision to exclude the consideration of a new hospital on a new site. ‘I absolutely support this legal challenge,’ Sir Mike added. ‘The hospital authorities were asked to provide a number of options and specifically excluded the new site option, despite it being widely proven to be the best option by the New Hospital Campaign. ‘I would urgently encourage local people to give the hospital campaigners full support.’ You can donate at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/newhospital-campaign.

Bailey’s celebrate their centenary
F
amily-run Bailey and Sons jewellers on Lower Kings Road celebrates its 100th anniversary this year – and it’s doing it in style. ‘We want to thank our customers and welcome new ones in with our special shopping night on 7 December,’ says owner Charlotte Hewitt. ‘Which is why we’re giving away a bottle of Campfire Gin from Puddingstone Distillery with every purchase over £500.’ Bailey’s was established in London in 1919 by Charlotte’s great-grandfather Fred. The family moved the business to Amersham in the 1960s, and finally moved to Berkhamsted in 1981 when Charlotte’s father Nigel took over. ‘We had been called Hewitt’s before, but my father bought this business from another family and promised to keep the name,’ says Charlotte. They’ve been an important part of the town ever since. To celebrate their centenary, they also held a private event in October – but it’s the event on 7 December that Charlotte’s most excited about.

‘We want to mark the occasion by offering customers a glass of gin as they shop, and making the evening really special. We hope people will come and celebrate with us!’

WALKS WITH A WHEELCHAIR
This issue our walk is at Ashridge and it’s our first fully accessible walk. Our thanks to Katy Etherington for her write up
D
uncombe Terrace is situated within the National Trust Estate of Ashridge. It offers a wheelchair, scooter and bike-friendly trail through an ancient wildlife-rich woodland, alongside open common with fabulous views across chalk downland. The trail covers a distance of two miles one way, or a four-mile return trip. Park in the free disabled car park by the visitor centre, and the path starts across the green to the right of the Bridgewater Monument, marked by stud posts. The path is rough stone, so be prepared for a little vibro-massage! Watch out for larger, protruding stones in the first 20m, which could cause unnecessary bumps or trips. The path took us deep into the woodland and continued over a wooden bridge, beneath which you can see the ancient Drovers path, a ditch worn by villagers taking their animals to graze
on Pitstone Common. There is a slight lip onto and off the bridge. Further along on the left you’ll come to a fenced-off mound called Bell Barrow, thought to be a Bronze Age burial site. The wooden lodge buried amongst the trees on the left is a copy of a Victorian shooting lodge that burned down in 1989. Emerge from the woodland for lovely views of Pitstone Hill and Aldbury Nowers and, on the right, a log bench for those who wish to pause for breath. The incline increases gradually through the pine woodland, before finally

emerging on to Clipper Down, marking the end of the mobility trail. The path continues beyond the marked mobility point for another mile to Ivinghoe Beacon. We ventured a short distance before battery levels started to get alarmingly low! The path is more uneven and steep in places, but if you’re up for a bit of off roading, the first 100m or so is doable. We returned to the Brownlow Cafe next to the visitor centre for tea and cake - a highly recommended pit stop! An accomplished designer, Katy is also the founder of PA Pool which was launched in June 2007. www.papool.co.uk is the only website of its kind and is for disabled people looking to employ a PA (carer) and PAs (carers) looking for work. There are so many cats that need a new home. Could you give one their forever home?
S
adly, winter is a busy time for the volunteers at the Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted branch of the Cats Protection charity. ‘We currently have a waiting list of those needing to come into our care and once we get a space we have fosterers who look after them and get them vet-treated,’ says branch manager, Debbie. Can you offer one of these adorable faces a loving new home?
Angus Angus is around six. He’s a lovely, calm boy and enjoys the company of people. He loves to curl up on the sofa and receive cuddles! He’s very affectionate and would love someone who can be there for him. He really enjoys being in the garden. We feel Angus would be happier in a family environment, as the only pet, where he can laze away his days with lots of cuddles and love, which he will return ten-fold.
This lovely lad is Bo. He’s seven and needs to feel loved and safe. He’s long haired, so will require grooming – when he’s in the mood! Bo is gentle and laidback, loves attention and cuddles. He likes playing with his toys and is always ready for a game. We feel Bo would be happier in an older family environment and may be happy to share his home with one cat-friendly dog. He would love access to a garden after his settling in period.
Prince Prince is a bright, naturally inquisitive boy who loves to race through his tunnels, jump in a box and play hide and seek. He’s an extremely responsive, chatty boy who adores company and is happy to play with anyone. He’s good with children too. Prince is just over a year old and neutered. We feel he would love a secure garden to explore. He would be best suited to a family environment, but as the only pet. Cats Protection is run entirely on donations and fundraising. FROM TINY
ACORNS Teaching children the importance of money management is essential
R
esearch has shown that children pick up their key financial habits by the age of just seven – so it’s never too early to teach them about money. ‘It’s vital that children have an appreciation and understanding of the value of money,’ says Robert Stringer from Stringer Mann Financial Planners in Berkhamsted. ‘Teaching them the concept of delayed gratification can be the key to helping them manage their money for life.’
Young children Children as young as three or four can learn some basics. ‘Set up a play shop so they can learn about paying for things,’ suggests Robert. This also teaches them numerical skills.
26 / Berkhamsted Living
‘Use non-monetary ways to get them to understand about delayed gratification. For example, if they don’t have the biscuit now, they can have an ice cream later.’ Children of seven and eight recognise the value of money, and understand that money is exchanged for things they want. While they’re also capable of understanding the concept of waiting for something they really want, they struggle with the difference between luxuries and necessities. ‘This is a good age to start talking about household bills,’ says Robert. ‘Get them to understand that if you leave all the lights on, the electricity has to be paid for- which means you might not be able to afford something else, like their football lessons or karate class.
www.livingmags.info
KIDS Teenagers
‘Try and include them in planning too, such as setting a weekly budget or writing a shopping list to help build their understanding.’
Pre-teens Pocket money is a great way to teach them about spending and saving. ‘Consider giving them a small amount each week, and then offer the chance to earn more by doing jobs, such as washing the car or mowing the lawn,’ suggests Robert. ‘This will help them see the money as a reward that’s directly related to the work they’ve done.’ To help them understand about saving, give them a jar where they can see the money accumulate, or set up an account that they can access online. Show them that, if they have £10 and spend £7 but save £3 as soon as they’re given it, the money quickly builds up, which gives them the ability to buy something they really want. ‘Encouraging them to reflect on money, and think about what they can buy right now versus what they can save up for later can be a real challenge, but definitely one worth pursuing,’ says Robert. ‘Children also need to understand that swiping a card is still spending it. ‘When our grandparents were young, most people were paid in cash and would put money into tins for mortgage, bills and so on. Most people didn’t – and couldn’t – spend above their means. These days, it’s all too easy to spend what you don’t have.’
It’s essential to emphasise the importance of planning ahead, and the consequences of making the right or wrong decisions about their spending. ‘For example, if they have a certain amount of money for food and transport to and from college, they need to learn that, if they spend it all on a KFC and then can’t get home, that has consequences,’ says Robert. ‘Maybe instead they should look ahead, and plan to take a packed lunch two or three times, so they can afford a treat at the end of the week.’ Teens can also learn the basics about things such as mortgages and loans, but keep it simple.
Grown-ups It’s never too late to learn about respecting money. We need to ask ourselves, ‘Do I need that more than I need the money?’ before making impulse purchases or that easy one-click Amazon buy. ‘If it helps, work out a weekly budget and take the cash out at the beginning of the week,’ says Robert. ‘You’ll probably find it much harder to hand over a £10 note for your lunch than if you just swipe a card at the till.’ For help with any financial issues, visit Stringer Mann at www.stringermann.co.uk

WINTER-PROOF YOUR HOME
We all love to feel cosy during the winter, but when the temperature drops, our homes are at risk. We spoke to experts at NFU Mutual to find out how to get ready for winter. Stop water pipes freezing
Reduce the damage of burst pipes
If water pipes freeze they can burst when the water starts to melt. Keep your heating on every day, even if you’re away, to stop the pipes from freezing in the first place. ‘For longer periods, you should turn the water off and drain the plumbing systems,’ explains Tony Fields from NFU Mutual Insurance in Hemel Hempstead. ‘Also leave your loft door open to allow heat to circulate around your tank and pipes.’
If pipes do freeze, turn off the water supply, and turn on cold taps to drain the system,’ says Tony. ‘Be careful of electrics, and turn off the electricity supply at the fusebox. ‘Turn off any immersion heater and central heating system and turn on all hot water taps to drain any excess water. ‘Check ceilings for bulging caused by water pooling above. If it is safe to do so, make a small hole to allow the water to escape slowly into a container.

PROPERTY
Other simple ways to protect your home Get your chimney swept HETAS, the solid fuel safety and standards organisation, recommends that you have your chimney swept twice a year, but at least once a year is essential. Creosote and soot build up in the chimney and prevent dangerous gases from escaping. A build-up can also cause dangerous chimney fires. Check carbon monoxide monitors If you have at least one fuel-burning appliance or heater then it’s essential to have a carbon monoxide (CO) monitor installed. CO is a deadly gas, which is otherwise impossible to detect. If you have one, make sure it’s working properly and check smoke alarms too. Check the roof Check your roof for broken or missing tiles and slates, and get them replaced to prevent water getting in. Keep gutters and drainpipes clear of debris to help rainwater drain away. Clear the garden Check fences to make sure they’re robust enough to withstand gales, and fix broken gates so they don’t spend the winter months banging around.
‘Always consult a plumber and electrician before the water and electricity are turned back on.’
Check your boiler ‘Regular boiler check-ups are essential, as they can prevent breakdowns during cold spells,’ says Tony. ‘It’s also worth asking your service engineer about the benefits of adding antifreeze to your system.’
Prevent snow damage A decent layer of snow on a conservatory roof is the equivalent of around 10 adults sitting on it – that’s a lot of extra weight for it to hold! ‘Damage is most often caused where a large amount of snow collects after falling over a number of days,’ says Tony. ‘The weight has the potential to cause roofs on conservatories, outbuildings or even houses to collapse.’ Keep gutters and drainpipes clear so that melting snow can drain away. Try to prevent damage by warming the building in order to melt the snow from the roof — open a loft hatch or heat a conservatory. Just make sure nobody stands underneath an area where snow could fall off.
Back in 1910, the Mutual Insurance Society was set up by a small group of farmers to attract more union members, the result of which was the creation of NFU Mutual. Little did we know then that was the first step to creating an insurance company which includes a national network of agencies. Roll forward 100 years and NFU Mutual has evolved into a business which also offers a range of personal and business insurance services including home insurance, and we are also lucky to have an NFU Mutual business based locally. NFU Mutual take pride in looking after their customers and look to go ‘above and beyond’ in the unfortunate event that there is a claim. Over the winter months there are a number of steps clients can take to minimise the chances of the worst happening, which the team in Hemel would be delighted to discuss.

GET BEAUTIFUL WINTER
SKIN Keep skin glowing all winter long with our expert advice
W
hen it’s cold outside and the central heating’s on, your skin can feel tight and dry. We spoke to Natasha Dauncey from Apothaka in Berkhamsted and Lucie Fountain from Elementary Skincare in Tring about keeping your skin looking good all winter. 1) Cover it If you spend long periods of time outside – walking the dog or running - make sure you cover your skin. ‘A balaclava (there are some fashionable ones around!) can protect against broken capillaries,’ says Lucie. 2) Protect it The sun may not seem bright, but the damaging UVA rays are pretty consistent all year round. ‘Moisturisers with SPF protection don’t usually have UVA protection as well as UVB,’ says Natasha. Choose a good quality sun cream for your face. 3) Cleanse it It depends on your skin type, but look for a cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin
32 / Berkhamsted Living
feeling stripped of moisture. ‘Cleansing oils that rinse are great, as they remove dirt and leave skin soft,’ says Natasha. ‘Make sure a cleanser has a balanced pH – around 4.5 to 6.’ Lucie adds: ‘The evening cleanse is the most important to remove dirt, pollution and dead skin cells, and to give the skin a good canvas for its overnight replenishment.’ Try REN’s Cleanse & Reveal Hot Cloth Cleanser, £15 for 100ml. 4) Moisturise it In the winter, skin loses oils, which need to be replaced. ‘Add a drop or two of skin oil to your usual moisturiser,’ says Natasha. ‘Also try a serum, which helps your skin hold on to moisture and protects the skin barrier.’ Editor Clare tried Apothaka’s Barrier Support Serum. It contains niacinamide and ceramides, great for all-round skin health. After a month of use my skin felt noticeably less lined and less tight. A 10ml bottle costs £19.50. www.apothaka.co.uk
www.livingmags.info
5) Rehydrate it Heating and cold weather can leave your skin dehydrated, tight and lined. ‘You need a decent moisturiser for the cold winter months – usually something heavier than your summer moisturiser,’ says Natasha. ‘Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which keeps skin plump and soft.’ Men tend to have more active sebaceous glands, which leads to oilier skin, so try something that controls excess oil such as men-ü Matt Skin Refresh Gel, £15.95 online. 6) Exfoliate it Exfoliation is essential for ensuring products are absorbed into the skin properly. ‘Once or twice a week is enough – any more and you risk stripping away the oils,’ explains Natasha. For men, a daily shave is an excellent way of exfoliating. Otherwise, try microdermabrasion – a gentle but deep exfoliation that stimulates collagen at the same time. Editor Clare tried it out at Elementary. Here’s how she got on:
Common skin problems Problem: Dry/chapped lips - Solution: Make a lip scrub with honey and brown sugar, suggests Lucie. Leave for 5-10 minutes, remove and follow with lip balm. ‘Try a lip balm that contains lanolin, the ingredient found in nipple cream,’ suggests Natasha. She recommends Keihl’s Lip Balm, £10. Problem: Dry, flaky skin - Solution: Strip back your routine and avoid harsh ingredients. A primer will give make-up a more even appearance and a facial spritz will keep moisture levels topped up. Problem: Dry hands - Solution: Exfoliate with your usual body scrub for five minutes, then rinse. Mix 2tbsp of Jojoba oil and your favourite essential oil into a bowl of warm water and soak for 10 minutes, then apply hand cream.

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR WINTER
Erica carnea
Give your garden a new lease of life with some simple and colourful winter planting
O
nce summer is over, most of us stop thinking about our gardens until spring. But get the planting right and you can enjoy gorgeous colours all year round.
Shrubs and evergreens Evergreen shrubs are the basis for some spectacular winter gardens. ‘Cornus, also known as dogwood grow in red, yellow, green and orange,’ explains Berkhamsted landscape gardener Helen Reeley. ‘But cut them right back in late February, otherwise you’ll end up with brown stems. The oranges of cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ look incredible on a sunny winter’s day.’ The cream and white leaves of pittosporum
36 / Berkhamsted Living
look stunning all winter long, while hellebores are good long-lasting winter flowers. ‘For colour and scent, try viburnum, which has a beautiful scented pale pink flower on bare stems,’ suggests Helen. ‘Quince, or Chaenomeles, has cup-shaped red winter flowers with a black stem.’
Grasses ‘A background of shaped Buxus can really bring other plants to life,’ says Helen. ‘Intersperse them with grasses or feathery plumes such as Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’, or choose seed heads such as Echinops, or globe thistle which turn a beautiful silvery brown and glisten in the frost.’
www.livingmags.info
GARDENS Pots and containers Heavenly bamboo, or Nandina domestica, has red and green leaves with red berry clusters and looks lovely in pots. ‘The Daphne bholua, particularly the ‘Jacqueline Postill’, is a small evergreen shrub with tiny pale pink flowers and an amazing scent,’ says Helen. ‘The sarcococca, or sweet box, has small white flowers all winter and really packs a punch scent-wise. ‘Winter gem’ is one of the best.’ Also try winter heathers, such as the purple Erica carnea, which can be underplanted with winter bulbs, such as Cyclamen coum, snowdrops and crocus.
Trees
Crocuses
Look for colourful bark as a stunning centrepiece. ‘The Tibetan cherry, or Prunus serrula, has the most amazing peeling, glossy red-brown bark,’
says Helen. ‘The Betula utilis var. jacquemontii, is a silver birch with a beautiful ornamental white bark and looks gorgeous under-planted with purple and yellow crocuses.’
Bulbs and flowers Plant bulbs from October until mid-December. ‘If you’re a fan of daffodils, try a delicate version such as ‘Tête-à-tête,’ says Helen. ‘Mix with crocuses and snowdrops for even earlier colour. www.reeleylandscapes.co.uk

RESTAURANT REVIEW
ROSANNA’S
TICKS ALL THE RIGHT BOXES Editor Clare Swatman tried out the restaurant formerly known as I Love Food...
W
hen I Love Food on Lower Kings Road closed for refurbishment, I was looking forward to seeing what it would look like when it reopened. Well, I wasn’t expecting this! The newly-named Rosanna’s is still run by the same family, but this is something entirely different. The interior – and the exterior – is beautiful; painted in a deep blue with accents of red, pink and gold, it feels a world away from the lively coffee shop/restaurant it was before. This restaurant means business. Upstairs is stunning too; the brand new terrace is the perfect place for cocktails on a sunny evening. It’s just a shame it was pouring with rain when I was there! I went at lunchtime and was pleased to see the restaurant filling up until the downstairs was completely at capacity. On to the food. I Love Food did have a lovely menu, with full flavours and delicious home-cooked Sicilian food. And Rosanna’s does the same – only this time it all feels a bit more ‘grown up’, which I like. I chose gnocchi with a rich tomato sauce, although the vegetarian options were plenty so I was spoilt for choice – not something I’m used to! I also chose deep fried courgette as a side dish. My friend Sarah was tempted by the fish, but in the end chose a chicken burger. The food didn’t disappoint. The portions were generous, the flavours were rich and the presentation was immaculate.
The atmosphere was buzzing too – no mean feat for a rainy Tuesday lunchtime! Rosanna’s is the perfect place for a casual lunch, intimate dinner or a meal with friends – and remember they only serve breakfast at weekends now.
Perfect seasonal dining...
