With that in mind, we’ve included a tasty festive recipe, and some inspiration for looking fabulous at those Christmas parties. Looking after our environment has been a major theme this year, so we take a look at ways that you can be more eco - indoors, with hints and tips on saving energy at home, and outside, with ideas on how to attract bees and other pollinators into your garden. Speaking of getting outside, our Ashridge Drovers Walk is the ideal activity for a winter weekend, or get the whole family out to take part in a Treasure Trail - we have 30 to give away in our competition. There’s a crossword with a festive theme to get our brains working after all that Christmas pud! And for the children we’ve got plenty of Christmas-themed puzzles to keep them busy.

A year of celebrations

year of celebrations is planned to mark the 800th anniversary of St Peter’s in Berkhamsted. Father Stuart Owen told Berkhamsted Living: ‘St Peter’s has been at the centre of the life of this town for eight centuries. We look forward to celebrating that wonderful legacy with you in 2022. ‘There are two strands to our plans. We’re going to ‘Celebrate Berkhamsted’: we live in a town that is full of groups and societies doing all sorts of wonderful things, and we’re throwing our door open to that great diversity of groups and inviting them in to stage concerts, put on exhibitions, organise lectures, whatever seems most appropriate. The second strand is

‘Berkhamsted Celebrates’: we’re going to put on a programme of events that has something for absolutely everybody in the town.’ In more good news, 2022 will see the Petertide Fair return on Saturday 2 July. And look out for news about the launch of a photography competition, which will invite entries on the themes of ‘Berkhamsted’ and ‘Celebrations’. Let there be light!

erkhamsted’s Festival of Light takes place on Sunday 28 November, 3.30pm to 6pm in Berkhamsted High Street. The festivities will start at 3.30pm when the High Street will be lined with a variety of festive fare, crafts, mulled wine and, of course, mince pies from both charity and commercial stalls. At 5pm find out which retailer will win the coveted Berkhamsted Citizens, Best Dressed Christmas Window Display. Entertainment includes a chance to hear from Lockers Park School Choir, Gobstoppers Theatre Arts and Swan Youth Band. The Christmas Lights will be switched on at 5.15pm with a blessing from St. Peter’s Church. Let Father Christmas’ elves help children to write or draw a special message to Father Christmas from 3.30pm to 6pm at the Civic

Arts space Opens Door to volunteers

‘V

olunteering at Open Door helps me connect with others, meet new people, improve my English, and learn new skills. It is a fun place to be!’ So says Ki, a volunteer at Open Door, the community arts space on Berkhamsted High Street. ‘Our volunteers are absolutely central to everything that we do, from serving tea and cakes, delivering meals to vulnerable people, tending our garden, or even fixing someone’s treasured possessions at our Repair Café,’ says Iain Manson, volunteer manager. ‘As we expand the reach and scope of our activities, we need to grow our amazing team.’ Open Door was set up three years ago to meet a need for greater connection in the community, and help tackle isolation and social inequality. Lifting beans and spirits for mental health

ifting tins of beans, and even the odd bottle of gin has helped Berkhamsted running company JogOn to raise over £2,000 for charity Hertfordshire Mind Network. Erica Carter and Heather Harris, launched their online Gentle Exercise Class 18 months ago. Erica explained: ‘We have people from as far afield as York grabbing their groceries for weights.’ Derek Moffitt, 84, (pictured) said: ‘They’ve really made a difference to my overall mobility.’ JogOn’s next target is to hit £3,000 in 2022.

DBC calls for Local Plan sites

acorum Borough Council is preparing a new Local Plan, following the feedback from the public consultation. Part of this process is planning for future development and understanding what land might be suitable. The Council would like to hear from you - not just landowners, but members of the public and organisations - if you have a potential site; or sites you would like to register for any kind of use, including residential, commercial and community uses. Any site can be submitted, however the Council is particularly looking for more sites on urban and brownfield land. See dacorum.gov.uk/callforsites

New defibrillator installed

TV football match was the catalyst for a new defibrillator at a Berkhamsted company headquarters. David Broome, a director at Quanta, in Rectory Lane, made the decision to install a defibrillator after watching Denmark footballer Christian Eriksen suffer a cardiac arrest during the World Cup. The defibrillator can be found outside the entrance of Redwood House, Rectory Lane, HP4 2DH (What 3 words location: /// weary.heave.trusts) and can be accessed 24 hours a day. Cricket Club promotions

erkhamsted Cricket Club is celebrating two promotions. While the top two teams performed well in their respective leagues, the 3rd XI and 4th XI have

both secured promotions. With a men’s 5th team now under way for the 2022 league season and very strong ladies’ and girls’ cricket, new members of all ages can come and participate in winter training starting in January - all teams are looking to strengthen their line-ups. Green spaces get Green Flag

erkhamsted’s Canal Fields and Rectory Lane Cemetery have both received the Green Flag Award. The award, now in its 25th year, is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, and is run by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy. Cllr Graham Barrett, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services at Dacorum Borough Council said, “It’s great news that our parks have achieved green flag status yet again. We know that our parks and green spaces have been vital for residents’ health and wellbeing over the past few years and will continue to be for future generations. Thank you to the teams for their outstanding work managing and maintaining these areas for everyone to enjoy.”

Council shows fundraising is child’s play

ettleden with Potten End Council has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds needed to revamp the village playground. After consulting with the community and specialist playground equipment suppliers, the council has decided to refurbish the existing slide and add a mix of new equipment, some appealing to under 5’s, with more adventurous equipment for older children. The council is also investigating equipment suitable for disabled children. Purchase and installation of the timber equipment will cost £48,000, and £31,000 has already been raised from various grants and donations, The council is hoping that donations from local people and organisations will help to raise the £17,000 balance. Busy time for Swan Reader Offer: Save £3 Youth Project H

he Swan Youth Project has plenty going on for young people aged 12 to 18. Latest plans include a visit to the London Diwali celebrations and taking part in the Berkhamsted Festival of Light. They recently took part in the Berkhamsted Big Green Week Event, showing how they were using the principles of the five ways to wellbeing, which is at the centre of the work it does with its young members. Aldi targets Berkhamsted for new store

erkhamsted is on the list of 100 new stores that Aldi plans to open across the UK in the next two years. The discount supermarket says it is on the lookout for sites that are big enough for a 20,000 sq ft store and around 100 dedicated parking spaces, preferably on a prominent main road. Rival supermarket Lidl told Living back in the autumn that it hoped to begin construction in the near future on its new supermarket at the old Roy Chapman site at Gossoms End.

erkhamsted Living is supporting the Christmas Toy Box Appeal this year, in a bid to give something back to the local community. Last year, the initiative, set up by Tring Radio and supported by Aylesbury Town Council alongside other small, local radio stations collected more than 4,000 toys for local charities. The Tring Radio Christmas Toy Box Appeal 2021 is supported by several local businesses acting as donation stations. Anyone can bring along a brand new toy (for young people up to the age of 18) to a donation station. The

BRITAIN LOVES BAKING GINGERBREAD COOKIES

his seasonal recipe comes from Britain Loves Baking, which has released a new baking themed advent calendar this year. One should be winging its way to the lucky winner of our online competition at livingmags.info/competitions right about now! The calendars cost £170 and can be ordered from britainlovesbaking.com.

Ingredients • 180g butter, softened • 170g brown sugar • 190g treacle • 1 large egg • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 420g plain flour • 1 tbsp ground ginger • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp ground cloves • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg For the icing • 250g Icing sugar • 10ml lemon juice • 5g of egg white powder or 1 sachet of Dr Oetkers Egg white Decoration • Food colouring gels • Sprinkles and sparkles 16 / Berkhamsted Living

Method 1. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter, brown sugar, and treacle until fluffy, for about two minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, spices, baking soda, and salt until combined. With the mixer on low, gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until dough just comes together. (Do not overmix!) 3. Divide dough in half and create two discs. Wrap each in plastic wrap and chill until firm, about two to three hours. 4. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Place one disc of dough on a lightly floured surface and roll until 1/4in thick. Cut out gingerbread men with a 3in wide cutter and transfer to baking sheets. 5. Bake until slightly puffed and set - 9-10 minutes, depending on the size of your cookie cutters. Let cool on baking sheets for five minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. 6. Repeat with the remaining disc of dough. 7. For the icing, put all the ingredients into a stand mixer bowl and beat for 5 mins. 8.Decorate each cookie with icing and sprinkles as desired. www.livingmags.info

Sleek, smooth, sophisticated and cool. A shorter and pointier version of the stiletto.

Like a round nail, but with the edges filed down the sides. Elegant and classy, this shape can help to make fingers look more slender. Best kept reasonably short. Ideal for natural nails if they are long enough.

Seen as conservative and strong, this style sees nails filed flat on the top with straight, sharp corners. A good shape to choose if you have short nails or if your nail beds are long and narrow.

Love square nails but not the straight corners? Then the squoval is for you! Flattering for most nail types. Easy to maintain and less prone to breakage, the wearer is likely to be easy going.

POLLINATORS It may be cold outside, but encouraging bees and other pollinators is an all-year-round task, so get planning now for spring, summer and beyond

e’ve all got the message now that we need to look after the bees. Along with other pollinators (even those dreaded picnic assassins the wasps!) they are the key to helping us save our wild habitats. And of course they can also help our own gardens thrive. Pollinators enable flowers to reproduce and if you grow fruit and veg you won’t see much of a harvest without some gardenfriendly bugs helping with the pollination process! Here’s five ways to make your garden a palace for pollinators: 1. Extend the flowering season Make sure you have flowers that bloom from early spring right the way through to late autumn/winter, to give pollinators a longer feeding season. Ask at your local garden centre for ideas for early spring and late autumn and beyond.

2. Choose different-shaped flowers According to our friends at the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, buff-tailed bumblebees and white-tailed bumblebees prefer short, open flowers - like those on white clover and comfrey. Delphiniums and honeysuckle, with their long, tube-like blooms, appeal to the garden bumblebee, which has a long tongue. And because the red-tailed bumblebee is quite large, it likes to have a landing platform - like that provided by daisy flowers. 3. Plant wildflowers Native plants will provide what the bees know best. And if you choose the kinds of plants that grow in the countryside around you, your soil should be the perfect growing medium. There are lots of wonderful plants to choose from including the common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), stinking hellebore (Helleborus foetidus),

which only smells if crushed, and has the most charming upside-down, cupshaped green blooms with red edges. Clematis vitalba (old man’s beard) and red and white campions (Silene) are more great choices. Check out the RHS website’s Plants for Pollinators section for more inspiration. You can also buy plenty of wildflower seeds and ‘bee bombs’ designed to create a wildflower explosion over a season.

4. Avoid flowers with double or multiple rows of petals While more fancy flowers such as hybrid tea roses and pompom dahlias may look good, because they are filled with petals, pollinators find them harder to access. These cultivated plants also tend to lack both nectar and pollen. 5. Provide nesting sites for bees and other bugs There are plenty of readymade bee and bug hotels to be found in garden centres, local markets and shops. Or you can save some cash by simply piling some logs and twigs together to make an attractive home. Pollinator-friendly plants Pussy willow - these lovely trees provide food for two types of mining bees - solitary bees that ‘mine’ into the earth to create their nests - Clarke’s mining bee and the Chocolate mining bee. Lavender - anyone who has ever passed a hedge of lavender positively humming with bees and hoverflies on a summer’s day, knows that this is a great plant to add to the garden. White hawthorn - if you’re looking for something to provide secure hedging, the white hawthorn with its thorny branches, is ideal. While intruders hate it, the bees love it when the May blossom appears. It encourages the likes of the red mason bee and the tawny mining bee. Abelia - also called the bee bush, so the clue is in the name. This evergreen shrub has dainty white flowers and a heady scent that will bring all the bees to your yard! A great addition to your autumn pollinator-friendly patch. Mahonia - a wonderful winter plant that brings scent at a time of year when there’s little to be had. Its yellow flowers also provide food for bees that are overwintering.

Making your home more eco friendly will save you money - as well as helping to save the planet!

ith so many of us working from home now, our home is the place where we spend most time - so for anyone wanting to lessen their carbon footprint and generally live a more ecofriendly lifestyle, tackling our house is one of the first places to start. Happily, there’s a number of very simple ways in which we can make our homes more eco-friendly. And as a bonus, many of these will also save us money. For a start, if you haven’t already, install a smart meter. You will be able to see at a glance how much energy you are using, to identify energy-sapping appliances - and identify where you could be making savings. Then consider a smart home system (such as Hive), which will allow you to turn appliances on and off (via a smartphone app) even when you’re not home. Talking of saving electricity, how about installing solar panels? Look out for the return around Easter 2022 of the Tring Solar PV Club, formed by Tring in Transition, a group that aims to help us achieve a more sustainable way of living. Tring in Transition’s Brian Kazer says that installation on a semidetached house could be as little as £3,500.

Join the Network Dacorum Borough Council’s Dacorum Climate Action Network plans to help us ‘think global and act local’ to help tackle the Climate and Ecological Emergency. The network will educate, encourage and enable people to make positive environmental changes in their everyday lives. Join at dacorum.gov.uk/dacorumcan. If you live in the HP23 postcode area, just restarting is their Thermal Imaging project, which shows how your home is affected by heat loss. Once the report has been completed, the group can offer some practical suggestions to help you tackle the areas that show where most heat is escaping. Next, turn attention to your boiler. Make sure it’s serviced regularly, so that it operates as efficiently as possible. And if you are contemplating replacing your boiler, start thinking outside the box. A biomass heating system heats your home and provides hot water, but instead of oil or gas, it is fired by

Low-cost suggestions for saving energy: 1. Reduce your heating thermostat by 1% (unless you have small babies or people with severe respiratory problems in the house), and add extra layers if needed. 2. Close all curtains at dusk. 3. Check that radiator heat is not escaping behind the curtains. 4. Use draught excluders at front and back doors. 5. Turn down radiator thermal valves in unused rooms. 6. Check loft insulation - and that the cold water tank and pipes are insulated too. 7. Put up a thick lined curtain at the front door, and draw it at dusk. 8. Check that you have cavity wall insulation. 9. Switch off lights when you leave the room. 10. Change all bulbs to LED.

Sustainable materials If you are building an extension (especially on a period home), you can consider reclaimed bricks - which will not only be more in keeping with your property, but will keep down your carbon footprint. You can also look for sustainable insulation such as sheep’s wool, hempcrete, and cellulose insulation (made from recycled newspaper, fibreglass and fire retardants). When choosing wood, look at bamboo, which grows fast (it can be harvested after five years while oak takes 40 years to grow), but do consider the carbon footprint as it has to be imported to the UK. Engineered timber, along with natural stone sourced locally, has a smaller carbon footprint than concrete or steel.

By Heather Jones In a first in-depth study of the monarchy’s role during the First World War, Heather Jones affords us a fascinating insight into what was crucial war work for the Royal Family. She unearthed a number of Berkhamsted connections during her research, such as the King’s visit to Berkhamsted in August 1916 and a royal message of condolence to the Sprunt family of Berkhamsted, who lost three sons in the war. The King’s message was so important that they included it on their sons’ memorial tablet in St Peter’s Church. This hardback book would make a great Christmas present for history buffs. Historian Heather Jones lives in Berkhamsted. She was granted access to the Royal Archives in Windsor Castle and spent several months there reading King George V’s wartime diaries.

The Secrets of Latimer House By Jules Wake. Softback launch at Our Bookshop in Tring 30 November. There’s something very special about books that are based on true events - and that’s the case with Jules Wake’s first outing into historical fiction. Based around the Buckinghamshire mansion Latimer House, which played an important role in the war efforts during World War II, it tells the tale of three young women who, while from different backgrounds, become firm friends as they carry out their secret war work. Jules, who has lived in Tring for 24 years, has been writing full time for three years. This is her 18th book and another two are in the pipeline.

King of Dragons By Pam G Howard We love books that are set in the local area - and children’s author Pam G Howard has come up with another great read in the second book in her Ashridge Adventure series. In the first book, Prince of Dragons, we met Princess Elvia who formed an unlikely friendship with Flint, the servant boy. This time Elvie and Flint - now both dragon riders - each have missions to fulfil. More fast-paced adventure, which will delight dragonloving readers, whatever their age! WALKS AROUND TOWN

Ashridge Drovers Walk This 4- or 6-mile route takes you deep into the beech woods of the National Trust Ashridge Estate and out onto the chalk downs with great views 1. From Tring Station turn right. Follow Station Road, after the junction take a track left over a cattle grid and continue straight on at a junction of bridleways. Turn right onto a footpath leading into Aldbury. 2. Follow the path, past farm buildings on your right and a pond on your left, continuing straight on to the road. Turn left towards Aldbury, past the church and straight across the crossroads, with the village pond on your left onto Toms Hill Road. After 30 metres take the bridleway on the left signposted ‘Bridgewater Monument 1/2’, it is quite a steep climb. 3. At the top, skirt around the green until the Bridgewater Monument is on your left, take the Ashridge Boundary Trail on the right. 4. For the shorter walk , turn left onto a footpath and descend out of the woods into farmland. After crossing Stocks Road, follow a bridlepath through Walk Wood onto Stocks Golf Course. The path goes around the outside edge of the golf course and meets up with the bridleway you first took from Tring Station. 5. For the longer walk, continue to follow waymarks for the Ashridge Boundary Trail. After 1.5 miles, the waymarked path forks left from the stony track, following the woodland edge and across open downland to meet the Ridgeway. Turn left on to the Ridgeway.

6. Follow the Ridgeway National Trail’s distinctive black fingerposts, bearing an acorn, over Pitstone Hill and through Aldbury Nowers back to Station Road.
