W

BERKHAMSTED WINTER 2021

e’re so looking forward to having something resembling a normal Christmas this year! With that in mind, we’ve included a tasty festive recipe, and some inspiration for looking fabulous at those Christmas parties. Looking after our environment has been a major theme this year, so we take a look at ways that you can be more eco - indoors, with hints and tips on saving energy at home, and outside, with ideas on how to attract bees and other pollinators into your garden. Speaking of getting outside, our Ashridge Drovers Walk is the ideal activity for a winter weekend, or get the whole family out to take part in a Treasure Trail - we have 30 to give away in our competition. There’s a crossword with a festive theme to get our brains working after all that Christmas pud! And for the children we’ve got plenty of Christmas-themed puzzles to keep them busy.

A year of celebrations

A

year of celebrations is planned to mark the 800th anniversary of St Peter’s in Berkhamsted. Father Stuart Owen told Berkhamsted Living: ‘St Peter’s has been at the centre of the life of this town for eight centuries. We look forward to celebrating that wonderful legacy with you in 2022. ‘There are two strands to our plans. We’re going to ‘Celebrate Berkhamsted’: we live in a town that is full of groups and societies doing all sorts of wonderful things, and we’re throwing our door open to that great diversity of groups and inviting them in to stage concerts, put on exhibitions, organise lectures, whatever seems most appropriate. The second strand is

‘Berkhamsted Celebrates’: we’re going to put on a programme of events that has something for absolutely everybody in the town.’ In more good news, 2022 will see the Petertide Fair return on Saturday 2 July. And look out for news about the launch of a photography competition, which will invite entries on the themes of ‘Berkhamsted’ and ‘Celebrations’. You can keep up with plans on Twitter and Instagram, both @berkhamsted800. And of course we will be keeping up with the news here at Berkhamsted Living and on our website at livingmags.info

Entertainment includes a chance to hear from Lockers Park School Choir, Gobstoppers Theatre Arts and Swan Youth Band. Arts space Opens Door to volunteers

‘V

olunteering at Open Door helps me connect with others, meet new people, improve my English, and learn new skills. It is a fun place to be!’ So says Ki, a volunteer at Open Door, the community arts space on Berkhamsted High Street. ‘Our volunteers are absolutely central to everything that we do, from serving tea and cakes, delivering meals to vulnerable people, tending our garden, or even fixing someone’s treasured possessions at our Repair Café,’ says Iain Manson, volunteer manager. ‘As we expand the reach and scope of our activities, we need to grow our amazing team.’ Open Door was set up three years ago to meet a need for greater connection in the community, and help tackle isolation and social inequality. Contact info@opendoorberkhamsted.co.uk to get involved.

Lifting beans and spirits for mental health

L

ifting tins of beans, and even the odd bottle of gin has helped Berkhamsted running company JogOn to raise over £2,000 for charity Hertfordshire Mind Network. Erica Carter and Heather Harris, launched their online Gentle Exercise Class 18 months ago. Erica explained: ‘We have people from as far afield as York grabbing their groceries for weights.’ Derek Moffitt, 84, (pictured) said: ‘They’ve really made a difference to my overall mobility.’ JogOn’s next target is to hit £3,000 in 2022.

DBC calls for Local Plan sites

D

acorum Borough Council is preparing a new Local Plan, following the feedback from the public consultation. Part of this process is planning for future development and understanding what land might be suitable. The Council would like to hear from you - not just landowners, but members of the public and organisations - if you have a potential site; or sites you would like to register for any kind of use, including residential, commercial and community uses. Any site can be submitted, however the Council is particularly looking for more sites on urban and brownfield land. See dacorum.gov.uk/callforsites

Council shows fundraising is child’s play

N

ettleden with Potten End Council has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds needed to revamp the village playground. After consulting with the community and specialist playground equipment suppliers, the council has decided to refurbish the existing slide and add a mix of new equipment, some appealing to under 5’s, with more adventurous equipment for older children. The council is also investigating equipment suitable for disabled children. Purchase and installation of the timber equipment will cost £48,000, and £31,000 has already been raised from various grants and donations, The council is hoping that donations from local people and organisations will help to raise the £17,000 balance. Donations can be made via the crowdfunding page at https://gofund.me/f0da89ed.

Investing responsibly Helping you find solutions to turn your money into a real force for good

T

he view that investments are measured by value alone is changing. In a world awake to the challenges of climate change, energy consumption and pollution, contemporary investing is about achieving financial wellbeing in a world worth living in. Understanding climate change risk within your portfolio is increasingly important as world policy continues to evolve. Our commitment to support you, and future generations, means helping you be conscious of the impact your investment has on climate change, as well as how carbon risk could affect your investment value.

Ensuring investments are used as a force for good, through engagement, is a powerful way to push for change. With many of us now considering the impact on the community and health of the planet in our everyday decisions, it’s no wonder that many organisations are also rethinking how they do business. Shining the spotlight on corporate behaviours helps illustrate why businesses cannot simply be about making profits. There’s a huge awareness that the general public are more

sustainable in the way they live their lives. Successful companies also think about their wider stakeholders and strive to improve employee satisfaction and community spirit – and that contributes to long-term success. You too can make a difference through the companies you invest in when it comes to your investments and savings. As part of our distinctive approach to investment management, we carefully assess our appointed fund managers’ attitudes to responsible investing, including climate change. We review how they incorporate environmental, social, and corporate governance in their decisionmaking, and how their investment strategy helps reduce climate risk. With more than £135 billion under management and 830,000 clients, St. James’s Place is able to exert a powerful influence on companies encouraging them to set environmental targets, such as net-zero carbon emissions, on your behalf. St. James’s Place works with our appointed fund managers and engagement partner, Robeco, to drive positive change through engagement activities such as site visits, investor meetings, setting out recommendations and expectations, and voting at annual general meetings.

Investors increasingly seek information around sustainability and responsible investing We believe what gets measured, gets managed. Reporting the carbon footprint of our St. James’s Place Portfolios allows us to identify opportunities for change. We joined the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance in 2020, publicly committing our investments to be net-zero by 2050, if not sooner. We will set interim targets to ensure this commitment is achievable and realistic. Environmental and social change is just around the corner – and we want to be at the forefront of any developments. Companies either embrace it, and benefit from the opportunities it creates, or deny it and suffer the consequences. Engagement is the best way to help our clients invest in a world worth living in. Our world is changing faster than anyone predicted and responsible investing has a huge role to play in shaping a better world and building a sustainable future. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

RECIPE

BRITAIN LOVES BAKING GINGERBREAD COOKIES

T

his seasonal recipe comes from Britain Loves Baking, which has released a new baking themed advent calendar this year. One should be winging its way to the lucky winner of our online competition at livingmags.info/competitions right about now! The calendars cost £170 and can be ordered from britainlovesbaking.com.

Ingredients • 180g butter, softened • 170g brown sugar • 190g treacle • 1 large egg • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 420g plain flour • 1 tbsp ground ginger • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp ground cloves • 1/2 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg For the icing • 250g Icing sugar • 10ml lemon juice • 5g of egg white powder or 1 sachet of Dr Oetkers Egg white Decoration • Food colouring gels • Sprinkles and sparkles 16 / Berkhamsted Living

Method 1. In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter, brown sugar, and treacle until fluffy, for about two minutes. Add egg and vanilla and beat until combined. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, spices, baking soda, and salt until combined. With the mixer on low, gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until dough just comes together. (Do not overmix!) 3. Divide dough in half and create two discs. Wrap each in plastic wrap and chill until firm, about two to three hours. 4. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Place one disc of dough on a lightly floured surface and roll until 1/4in thick. Cut out gingerbread men with a 3in wide cutter and transfer to baking sheets. 5. Bake until slightly puffed and set - 9-10 minutes, depending on the size of your cookie cutters. Let cool on baking sheets for five minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. 6. Repeat with the remaining disc of dough. 7. For the icing, put all the ingredients into a stand mixer bowl and beat for 5 mins. 8.Decorate each cookie with icing and sprinkles as desired. www.livingmags.info

NAILED IT!

T

Give yourself a hand and make sure your nails stand out this party season!

he shape of your nails can say quite a lot about you and your personality, and with so many shapes to choose from, you can say whatever you like!

4. Lipstick

1. Stiletto

If you’re feeling bold and creative, this is the shape to choose if you want a bit of drama! A more extreme version of the almond shape, so maybe try that first if you’re unsure. For acrylic and gel nails only.

Looking like a tube of lipstick, this slanted style will make you stand out in the crowd without being too eccentric. Said to have been created by South Korea’s Eun Kyung Park (aka @nail_unistella), and a huge Instagram trend in 2020. If you want to get really creative, go for the swirled lipstick shape! Best for acrylic and gel nails.

5. Edge 2. Ballerina

Because it looks like a dance slipper. For those who are trendy and in touch. Makes a statement whether left bare or painted in a single colour.

Appealing to the young and creative, this shape is ideal if you fancy pointed nails like the stiletto, but want something a little less extreme.

6. Oval 3. Mountain Peak

Sleek, smooth, sophisticated and cool. A shorter and pointier version of the stiletto.

24 / Berkhamsted Living

Like a round nail, but with the edges filed down the sides. Elegant and classy, this shape can help to make fingers look more slender. Best kept reasonably short. Ideal for natural nails if they are long enough.

HEALTH AND BEAUTY

7. Almond

12. Arrowhead

A more extreme version of the oval, with more filing down the edges, so it looks like an almond. This shape can be used with acrylic or reinforced gel nails, if natural nails are too weak to keep the structure. For those who want to look more unique. Looks best in a nude or pastel colour, and makes shorter fingers look longer. You’ll need medium to long nails for this.

8. Square

Seen as conservative and strong, this style sees nails filed flat on the top with straight, sharp corners. A good shape to choose if you have short nails or if your nail beds are long and narrow.

9. Squoval

Love square nails but not the straight corners? Then the squoval is for you! Flattering for most nail types. Easy to maintain and less prone to breakage, the wearer is likely to be easy going.

10. Rounded

This is a classic shape and perfect if you like to keep your nails shorter. Easy to look after and perfect if you can’t grow your nails long. Wearers are considered laid-back and quieter.

11. Flare

For someone stylish who wants to stand out from the crowd. This shape flares upward and out. For acrylic and gel nails only - unless you have super-strength natural nails!

A shorter, softer - and more practical - version of the stiletto. Can be used for natural nails, as long as they are long and thick, as well as gels and acrylics.

Christmas trends Take a look at some of your favourite Christmas decorations and echo their colours and sparkle in your nail designs If you prefer a more minimalist nod to the festive season, choose your favourite colour and add just one glittery, sparkly nail or Christmas design for a classy festive design Christmas doesn’t have to be all about red, greens and golds. Choose an icy blue theme that will take you through to New Year, with just a touch of ‘Frozen’ about it. Tiny jewels add a 3D effect. Go Nordic with a classic red and white design that wouldn’t look out of place in Santa’s Lapland workshop!

Winter 2021 / 29

PLAN FOR

POLLINATORS It may be cold outside, but encouraging bees and other pollinators is an all-year-round task, so get planning now for spring, summer and beyond

W

e’ve all got the message now that we need to look after the bees. Along with other pollinators (even those dreaded picnic assassins the wasps!) they are the key to helping us save our wild habitats. And of course they can also help our own gardens thrive. Pollinators enable flowers to reproduce and if you grow fruit and veg you won’t see much of a harvest without some gardenfriendly bugs helping with the pollination process! Here’s five ways to make your garden a palace for pollinators: 1. Extend the flowering season Make sure you have flowers that bloom from early spring right the way through to late autumn/winter, to give pollinators a longer feeding season. Ask at your local garden centre for ideas for early spring and late autumn and beyond.

30 / Berkhamsted Living

2. Choose different-shaped flowers According to our friends at the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, buff-tailed bumblebees and white-tailed bumblebees prefer short, open flowers - like those on white clover and comfrey. Delphiniums and honeysuckle, with their long, tube-like blooms, appeal to the garden bumblebee, which has a long tongue. And because the red-tailed bumblebee is quite large, it likes to have a landing platform - like that provided by daisy flowers. 3. Plant wildflowers Native plants will provide what the bees know best. And if you choose the kinds of plants that grow in the countryside around you, your soil should be the perfect growing medium. There are lots of wonderful plants to choose from including the common foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), stinking hellebore (Helleborus foetidus),

which only smells if crushed, and has the most charming upside-down, cupshaped green blooms with red edges. Clematis vitalba (old man’s beard) and red and white campions (Silene) are more great choices. Check out the RHS website’s Plants for Pollinators section for more inspiration. You can also buy plenty of wildflower seeds and ‘bee bombs’ designed to create a wildflower explosion over a season.

4. Avoid flowers with double or multiple rows of petals While more fancy flowers such as hybrid tea roses and pompom dahlias may look good, because they are filled with petals, pollinators find them harder to access. These cultivated plants also tend to lack both nectar and pollen. 5. Provide nesting sites for bees and other bugs There are plenty of readymade bee and bug hotels to be found in garden centres, local markets and shops. Or you can save some cash by simply piling some logs and twigs together to make an attractive home. If you want to have a go at making your own bee hotel, you’ll find instructions at www.livingmags.info/features/ save-the-bees.

GARDENS

Pollinator-friendly plants Pussy willow - these lovely trees provide food for two types of mining bees - solitary bees that ‘mine’ into the earth to create their nests - Clarke’s mining bee and the Chocolate mining bee. Lavender - anyone who has ever passed a hedge of lavender positively humming with bees and hoverflies on a summer’s day, knows that this is a great plant to add to the garden. White hawthorn - if you’re looking for something to provide secure hedging, the white hawthorn with its thorny branches, is ideal. While intruders hate it, the bees love it when the May blossom appears. It encourages the likes of the red mason bee and the tawny mining bee. Abelia - also called the bee bush, so the clue is in the name. This evergreen shrub has dainty white flowers and a heady scent that will bring all the bees to your yard! A great addition to your autumn pollinator-friendly patch. Mahonia - a wonderful winter plant that brings scent at a time of year when there’s little to be had. Its yellow flowers also provide food for bees that are overwintering.

ECO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE

Making your home more eco friendly will save you money - as well as helping to save the planet!

W

ith so many of us working from home now, our home is the place where we spend most time - so for anyone wanting to lessen their carbon footprint and generally live a more ecofriendly lifestyle, tackling our house is one of the first places to start. Happily, there’s a number of very simple ways in which we can make our homes more eco-friendly. And as a bonus, many of these will also save us money. For a start, if you haven’t already, install a smart meter. You will be able to see at a glance how much energy you are using, to identify energy-sapping appliances - and identify where you could be making savings. Then consider a smart home system (such as Hive), which will allow you to turn appliances on and off (via a smartphone app) even when you’re not home. Talking of saving electricity, how about installing solar panels? Look out for the return around Easter 2022 of the Tring Solar PV Club, formed by Tring in Transition, a group that aims to help us achieve a more sustainable way of living. Tring in Transition’s Brian Kazer says that installation on a semidetached house could be as little as £3,500.

Join the Network Dacorum Borough Council’s Dacorum Climate Action Network plans to help us ‘think global and act local’ to help tackle the Climate and Ecological Emergency. The network will educate, encourage and enable people to make positive environmental changes in their everyday lives. Join at dacorum.gov.uk/dacorumcan. If you live in the HP23 postcode area, just restarting is their Thermal Imaging project, which shows how your home is affected by heat loss. Once the report has been completed, the group can offer some practical suggestions to help you tackle the areas that show where most heat is escaping. Next, turn attention to your boiler. Make sure it’s serviced regularly, so that it operates as efficiently as possible. And if you are contemplating replacing your boiler, start thinking outside the box. A biomass heating system heats your home and provides hot water, but instead of oil or gas, it is fired by

www.livingmags.info

Low-cost suggestions for saving energy: 1. Reduce your heating thermostat by 1% (unless you have small babies or people with severe respiratory problems in the house), and add extra layers if needed. 2. Close all curtains at dusk. 3. Check that radiator heat is not escaping behind the curtains. 4. Use draught excluders at front and back doors. 5. Turn down radiator thermal valves in unused rooms. 6. Check loft insulation - and that the cold water tank and pipes are insulated too. 7. Put up a thick lined curtain at the front door, and draw it at dusk. 8. Check that you have cavity wall insulation. 9. Switch off lights when you leave the room. 10. Change all bulbs to LED.

sustainably sourced wood pellets. This fuel is pretty much carbon neutral because the carbon dioxide that is released when it is burned, was absorbed by the tree while it was growing. Clever eh? Or you could look at heat pumps, which have low energy consumption, and don’t need an oil tank or gas pipes - perfect for a rural property. When it comes to appliances, look for those with the highest energy rating - A - for the most efficient. If you drink a lot of cups of tea or coffee now you work at home, invest in an eco-kettle, which uses less energy and boils quicker.

Reusing homeware and furniture is the perfect way to be eco friendly. Check out Returned to Glory in Berkhamsted…

Keep energy costs down

Reusing homeware and furniture is the perfect way to be eco friendly. Check out Returned to Glory in Berkhamsted, a fantastic organisation with clever creative volunteers who turn donated items into desirable pieces to grace any home. Items that have been upcycled and reupholstered can be found in their Northbridge Road showroom, with profits going to the Hospice of St Francis. You can also buy second hand in all of the wonderful charity shops in Tring and Berkhamsted and of course Tring’s Market Auctions. Finally, if it’s broken, fix it at the Repair Cafe on the first Saturday of every month, 9:3012:30, at Open Door, on Berkhamsted High Street. You can have a nice cuppa and slice of cake while you wait too! Find out more at www.opendoorberkhamsted.co.uk/repair-cafe. Sustainable materials If you are building an extension (especially on a period home), you can consider reclaimed bricks - which will not only be more in keeping with your property, but will keep down your carbon footprint. You can also look for sustainable insulation such as sheep’s wool, hempcrete, and cellulose insulation (made from recycled newspaper, fibreglass and fire retardants). When choosing wood, look at bamboo, which grows fast (it can be harvested after five years while oak takes 40 years to grow), but do consider the carbon footprint as it has to be imported to the UK. Engineered timber, along with natural stone sourced locally, has a smaller carbon footprint than concrete or steel.

BOOKS

Snuggle up on the couch with some great reads by local authors to keep you company

Lies Beyond The Woods By Fiona Thomas After Emily makes a grim discovery while on holiday in Cornwall, a number of strange events play on her paranoia. What lies and secrets are those around her hiding? This is a real page turner. Eerily atmospheric, there are twists and turns aplenty - you won’t want to put this book down! Fiona grew up in Hemel Hempstead, and moved to Ivinghoe four years ago, where she lives with her partner. A civil servant, Fiona’s free time is taken up with writing and she’s already working on her second novel.

By Heather Jones In a first in-depth study of the monarchy’s role during the First World War, Heather Jones affords us a fascinating insight into what was crucial war work for the Royal Family. She unearthed a number of Berkhamsted connections during her research, such as the King’s visit to Berkhamsted in August 1916 and a royal message of condolence to the Sprunt family of Berkhamsted, who lost three sons in the war. The King’s message was so important that they included it on their sons’ memorial tablet in St Peter’s Church. This hardback book would make a great Christmas present for history buffs. Historian Heather Jones lives in Berkhamsted. She was granted access to the Royal Archives in Windsor Castle and spent several months there reading King George V’s wartime diaries.

The Secrets of Latimer House By Jules Wake. Softback launch at Our Bookshop in Tring 30 November. There’s something very special about books that are based on true events - and that’s the case with Jules Wake’s first outing into historical fiction. Based around the Buckinghamshire mansion Latimer House, which played an important role in the war efforts during World War II, it tells the tale of three young women who, while from different backgrounds, become firm friends as they carry out their secret war work. Jules, who has lived in Tring for 24 years, has been writing full time for three years. This is her 18th book and another two are in the pipeline.

King of Dragons By Pam G Howard We love books that are set in the local area - and children’s author Pam G Howard has come up with another great read in the second book in her Ashridge Adventure series. In the first book, Prince of Dragons, we met Princess Elvia who formed an unlikely friendship with Flint, the servant boy. This time Elvie and Flint - now both dragon riders - each have missions to fulfil. More fast-paced adventure, which will delight dragonloving readers, whatever their age! Pam lives close to the Ashridge Estate where she likes to go dragon hunting with her labradoodle, Barty. Sometimes they let Pam’s husband John come along too! 38 / Berkhamsted Living

Berkhamsted Logs - ready to burn

A

s a local provider of wood fuel, Berkhamsted Logs is making it easy for customers to find wood fuels that have been certified as Ready to Burn and that meet new legal requirements that came into force from 1 May 2021 in England. The new regulations aim to prevent harmful pollution from domestic burning of all solid fuels by ensuring wood sold in volumes of under 2m3 is certified as having a moisture content of 20% or less. Berkhamsted Logs’ customers can be confident that the wood fuel being sold is ready for immediate use by looking for the Ready to Burn logo along with the supplier’s name and unique Ready to Burn certification number. Robert Cutler, owner of Berkhamsted Logs, says: ‘The new legislation is all about helping to reduce particulate emissions and improve

air quality. Certified wood fuels will give you more heat from each piece of Ready to Burn wood because they burn more efficiently than unseasoned, green wood and reduce the environmental impact of burning. Using proven dry wood is also better for your appliance and chimney and will help reduce maintenance and fuel costs.’ Visit berkhamstedlogs.co.uk for more information.

KEEP WARM THIS WINTER

Quality hardwoods from sustainable sources. Ideal for log burners & open fires. Bagged or by the load – you decide. All our products have been certified as READY TO BURN.

WALKS AROUND TOWN

Ashridge Drovers Walk This 4- or 6-mile route takes you deep into the beech woods of the National Trust Ashridge Estate and out onto the chalk downs with great views 1. From Tring Station turn right. Follow Station Road, after the junction take a track left over a cattle grid and continue straight on at a junction of bridleways. Turn right onto a footpath leading into Aldbury. 2. Follow the path, past farm buildings on your right and a pond on your left, continuing straight on to the road. Turn left towards Aldbury, past the church and straight across the crossroads, with the village pond on your left onto Toms Hill Road. After 30 metres take the bridleway on the left signposted ‘Bridgewater Monument 1/2’, it is quite a steep climb. 3. At the top, skirt around the green until the Bridgewater Monument is on your left, take the Ashridge Boundary Trail on the right. 4. For the shorter walk , turn left onto a footpath and descend out of the woods into farmland. After crossing Stocks Road, follow a bridlepath through Walk Wood onto Stocks Golf Course. The path goes around the outside edge of the golf course and meets up with the bridleway you first took from Tring Station. 5. For the longer walk, continue to follow waymarks for the Ashridge Boundary Trail. After 1.5 miles, the waymarked path forks left from the stony track, following the woodland edge and across open downland to meet the Ridgeway. Turn left on to the Ridgeway.

6. Follow the Ridgeway National Trail’s distinctive black fingerposts, bearing an acorn, over Pitstone Hill and through Aldbury Nowers back to Station Road. With thanks to Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty New app: The Ashridge Drovers Walk is available as part of a free walks app for Apple and Android devices. Simply download the Handheld Tours App and select the Chilterns AONB folder which lists all the Chilterns walks.
