Santa Claus is coming to towns and villages

anta has already started his tour of Tring and surrounding villages, which ends on 17 December this year. Wave from a window or pop outside to say hello. All donations will help to fund local hospice care this Christmas, going to the Rennie Grove and Peace hospices. As well as Tring, Santa will appear in Cheddington, Pitstone (village and Castlemead) and Marsworth - see our What’s On pages for dates.

Council welcomes Winter at Tring U-turn on ticket Farmers Market office closure

ring Town Council has welcomed the government’s U-turn on plans to close Tring Station’s ticket office, along with up to 1,000 others across the country. It stated: ‘The Town Council was very concerned that the ticket office at Tring Station was recommended for closure. We are therefore very pleased with the decision not to go ahead.’ Plans to close railway stations across England caused a public backlash. The cost-cutting proposals drew 750,000 responses during a public consultation over the summer, with the passenger watchdogs Transport Focus and London TravelWatch, stating that 99% of them were objections. The objectors’ main concerns were how to buy tickets, how to get travel advice and information, and how disabled passengers would get assistance, if the ticket offices were to close.

Consultation on revised Draft Local Plan ends soon!

omments on the long-awaited revised Draft Local Plan for Dacorum must be in by Monday 11 December. The revised plan was released at the end of October, following the Draft Local Plan (the Emerging Strategy for Growth) in 2020. The Local Plan lays out the strategy for delivering new homes, jobs and investment across the borough through to 2040, along with infrastructure such as schools, transport and health facilities. It also lays out the plans for protecting and providing parks and green spaces. Following the consultation, Dacorum Borough Council said a summary Consultation Report will be produced in spring 2024 before a pre-submission version of the Local Plan is published in October 2024, in time for formal submission by mid-2025. In a press release, the council said the revised plan had responded to public opinion, which believed the housing allocation should be lower. The council stated: ‘We have consulted on a proposed reduction to the overall housing target, from the Government target of 1,017 to around 900 new homes a year.’ It also says that it is ‘proposing the removal of 12 sites previously shown for housing in the

Green Belt’, following the public consultation. And where the public pointed out that the proposed level of homes across the Borough was disproportionate for smaller towns and villages, the council answered, saying: ‘We have reduced the number of homes proposed at Tring and Berkhamsted, our villages, and focused on transforming Dacorum’s largest and most sustainable town, Hemel Hempstead, by delivering new growth and infrastructure via the Hemel Garden Communities programme.’ The public also wanted to see the council maximise housing on brownfield sites. It replied: ‘We have set out new opportunities to regenerate Hemel Hempstead’s town centre and other urban areas.’ Information is available online at letstalk. dacorum.gov.uk (where you can also submit comments) as well as in hard copy form from Victoria Hall, Tring and public libraries.

ADHD no barrier to netball success Netball throughout her primary years greatly eased Ella’s transition to secondary school, by having a ready-made friendship group from day one. Mighty Netball has been running netball sessions since 2017 in Tring. A non-competitive, inclusive and welcoming organisation championing and actively promoting grassroots sport, Mighty Netball welcomes all children. Co-founder Corinne and assistant coach Lucy aim to make the session engaging and fun for all. Find out more at: www.mightynetball.co.uk.

lla Kingston began her netball journey with Mighty Netballers, which runs sessions in Tring, when she was six. Now, aged 13, she plays club netball at least five times a week, and is completely obsessed. She plays in a regional youth league and has recently got into the Saracen Mavericks Futures programme - a huge achievement in a very competitive environment. Ella has ADHD, which can bring challenges to everyday life. Netball has had an extremely positive impact on Ella and her whole family. Mum Rebecca explained how playing team sport has given Ella so much confidence, resilience, and ambition; as well as learning key skills that help manage her ADHD such as patience, perseverance, and accountability. Having ADHD has meant that Ella often struggled when something wasn’t, in her eyes, as it should be such as an umpire’s decision in a match. Over time, learning and accepting that sporting decisions are objective and sometimes variable, has helped in so many other key areas of Ella’s life. Perhaps the biggest gain of all has been meeting the most incredible group of friends. Meeting netball friends at Mighty

he Tring Park Arts Society which meets at the Civic Centre, Berkhamsted, on Wednesday mornings 10 times a year for lectures by experts in their field has introduced a green badge scheme to welcome new members and identify them at the lectures. They are also invited to meet others together with committee members for coffee at the nearby Waitrose café afterwards. Details on our What’s On pages and at www.artssociety-tringpark.co.uk

RIP Peter Coneron

eter Coneron, the first Chair of Trustees of community group Tring Together, died on 17 October. Peter played an important part in community activities and Tring Together said: ‘He will be remembered for all the wonderful community projects he was involved in and especially by us at Tring Together.’

News from Tring Town Council C ouncillors have been busy analysing the results from the Community Infrastructure Levy Expenditure consultation (find out more at www.tring.gov. uk), and planning where to invest in the town over the coming months. A new working party is considering projects ranging from High Street

improvements to a possible community garden at Bulbourne. Climate Action is now on the Ordinary Council Meeting agenda every month and the council is continuing to investigate recycling bins for the town (not as straightforward as you might think) and is moving forward on developing Green Planning Criteria and a Climate Action Plan. The planning department has requested a traffic survey in relation to plans for the Nora Grace Hall, and the council will be proceeding with that over the coming weeks.

Dancers leap into finals

t’s been a great season so far for the Tringbased HW Dance competition team. Laura Chappell and Rachel Wellbourne have both qualified for national finals next

year in the So You Want to Dance competition, smashing their recent heat in Milton Keynes. Their lyrical duet placed second in their heat and Laura placed first with both her lyrical and contemporary solos, guaranteeing their spots in next summer’s grand finals. Rachel also qualified on points for her contemporary solo. Their teacher, Harriet Wise, said: ‘I’m so proud of the girls and how hard they work every single time. They both bring everything they have to the stage for every performance. They’re a dream to work with.’

Music to bring in the new year B erkhamsted Music’s concert series continues into the New Year on Saturday 27 January at Berkhamsted Civic Centre with a visit to a musical picture exhibition guided by pianist Victor Maslov. After a few Bagatelles by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, Victor moves on to Rachmaninoff’s ‘Study Pictures’ before ending in the gallery of Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures from an Exhibition’.

The Resol Quartet brings the season to a close on Saturday 24 February. Between well-known string quartets by Mozart and Mendelssohn you will find Puccini’s lyrical elegy Chrysanthemums and Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans’ only string quartet. Festival chance for budding filmmakers

ertfordshire Film Festival is back on the big screen! The Festival returns in April 2025 to provide an unmissable opportunity for young filmmakers to create and showcase their work. Work will be selected by a selection panel of industry professionals and previous editions of the Festival have seen talks and masterclasses from leading film and TV industry figures alongside panel discussions and workshops.

The Festival gives young people aged 11-25 who live, work or study in Hertfordshire, the chance to share their work with a wider audience. Submitted work will be shortlisted to screen over the two days. The prize for the best film from the 11–17 age category will be an industry screening at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden and a family ticket to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter. The 18–25 year old prize winners will also receive an industry screening at the studios plus lunch with Dan Dark, executive vice president Warner Bros. Studio Operations, on his next UK visit. The Festival will also run a skills development workshop in early January 2024 aimed at underrepresented filmmakers in the Hertfordshire area. Compassionate Dacorum gets Café opens plugged in

ennie Grove Peace Hospice Care has launched a Compassionate Café. The café will run on the first Wednesday of the month from 1.30-3pm, and provides a space for local people who have been affected by bereavement or any kind of loss to meet others by coming together for a cuppa and a chat. Each session is run by volunteers who are on hand to welcome and speak to attendees. It will have an informal structure, guided by the needs of the people attending. The hospice charity is working in partnership with Wigginton Community Shop & Café and their volunteers have been trained by the hospice to help provide a welcoming space.

he first of a new batch of Electric Vehicle Charging Points (EVCPs) for Dacorum are up and running in Tring - with many more to follow across the borough. A range of different EVCPs – from Fast to Ultra Rapid - are on the way at many other sites in Dacorum, with installation starting soon, and information will be released by the Council on when these will be available. Tring’s points are at the Forge Car Park, with Frogmore Street (East) Car Park to follow. Dacorum Borough Council was awarded £415,360 by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), with support of the Energy Saving Trust, for additional charging points to be fitted in public car parks. he new car park for Tring Park looks set to open in the near future. The Woodland Trust told us: ‘We’ve had a positive outcome with the Herts Highways, which has enabled us to move on with final planning condition discharge for the car park and we’re now waiting to hear from our consultant who has been managing our planning discharge of conditions. Unfortunately, it is still not currently possible to put a date on the opening, but it feels much more like the end is in sight.’

ring’s Youth Council has monthly meetings on Wednesdays with the date set at each meeting to fit around exams and other commitments of the young people. It also supports the Youth Projects bi-weekly Youth Club at the Temperance Hall in Tring on Wednesdays 4.30-7pm and Fridays 6.30-9pm. Miller bags highest qualification

Robert Beckett is one of six employees from flour mills across the UK who have been awarded the Advanced Milling Diploma this year, after three years of study. Airport expansion approved T

he plans to increase passenger capacity at London Luton Airport to 19 million a year have been approved. While Luton Borough Council’s development management committee initially approved the plans to increase passenger capacity from 18 million to 19 million a year, as well as amend day and night noise contours, a local inquiry was held earlier this year, to review ‘relevant aspects’ of the plans. The inspectorate decided to greenlight the proposal, subject to conditions. While they agreed that the increase in flights, along with travel by staff and passengers to and from the airport could increase greenhouse gas emissions, they stated that the airport’s owner was committed to a sustainability strategy across the airport. Following the outcome of the inquiry, Hemel Hempstead MP Sir Mike Penning criticised the decision during a Parliamentary debate, saying: ‘The increased noise and pollution will affect the people of Hertfordshire and not the people of Luton who get all the financial benefits. ‘The decision to allow increased number of flights - the expansion will almost double Luton airport - was fundamentally opposed by me, other local MPs and residents, and it will be a very sad day when it goes ahead.’ Victoria Collins Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Harpenden & Berkhamsted, said: ‘The government’s decision to expand passenger numbers at Luton airport is an insult to our local communities concerned about climate change, plagued by aircraft noise and air pollution and the strain on our local infrastructure.

‘Luton Airport, supported by Luton Council, made this application retrospectively because they had already breached legal noise and passenger limits in 2019, and wanted to press on. ‘Despite the admission that there will be more emissions from aircraft and ground transport, and that air quality will be adversely impacted as a result of this expansion the Secretaries of State have approved the expansion anyway.’ Plans for a second terminal, which could see passenger numbers up to 32 million a year, are still in the pipeline. This proposal is being considered by inspectors as part of National Infrastructure Planning - its examination stage is set to finish in February 2024.

The psychology of currency, and understanding our relationship with money

A class apart Indeed, a 2019 study conducted by the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) found that 70% of people in the UK consider themselves part of the ‘middle class’. As a result, many may perceive that, in terms of money, they have more, or at times less, than they actually do. The debit disconnect This intriguing disparity between perception and reality is dangerous when you factor in how credit and debit cards have transformed our spending habits, given that they provide a sense of ease, convenience, and sometimes a disconnect from the actual expenditure. An experiment conducted at the University of Bristol suggested that using physical cash can significantly reduce impulsive buying compared to card payments. EXPENSE? Christmas party season is soon upon us, and with everything going on in the world, and the colder and darker months, it’s most definitely the time to give in to the festive cheer!

s a limited company, you might be fretting about finances, worried that you simply can’t afford it; however, a party or social function is in fact an expense that is exempt from tax and National Insurance (NI). Now it looks like the celebrations are back on! There are of course a few rules surrounding all of this; Claiming for a Christmas party First of all, it’s worth pointing out that while we’re specifically talking about Christmas, this type of expense actually covers any annual event; if you wanted to, you could always have a summer party instead, such as a barbecue for example. So, to be exempt and not have to report and pay tax and NI to HMRC, the event/s must: • cost £150, or less, per person • be open to all of your employees • be annual

Here’s a look at the finer details when it comes to the rules of social functions and parties: • If your company has different departments, it is possible for you to put on separate parties just as long as all of your employees are invited to one of them. • The limit of £150pp applies to everyone attending the party, not just employees – meaning, if guests are allowed, the allowance is £300 per couple. • The £150 is an exemption and not an allowance – money needs to be physically spent for you to be able to claim the tax relief. • Expenses that are exempt from tax and NI will relate to the entire event, including transport, entertainment, accommodation and food and drink. • If you only have one employee in the company and that person is you, then you can still benefit from the exemption. You

If you end up exceeding the £150pp rule, or an event has not been open to everyone, then you’ll need to report it to HMRC and it will no longer be exempt from tax and NI. In this case, it will then count as a benefit in kind, so you’ll need to report on each employee’s P11D, plus pay Class 1A NI on the entire cost of the event.

Hiring an accountant Directors or the self-employed will choose to hire an accountant to file their tax returns for them, so, instead of spending the festive period doing self-assessment admin, you can spend that time concentrating on the more important tasks around Christmas, such as eating your own body weight in turkey and chocolate coins. An accountant can also help in other areas – they can take care of certain tasks you’d otherwise have to spend time on (leaving you free to concentrate on the running of your business), help to keep you on top of financial liabilities and deadlines and can provide you with useful financial advice. If you do want to hire an accountant, then make sure you do your research; look at reviews and speak to colleagues and friends for recommendations. The Aldbury poachers The chocolate box village of Aldbury has a dark Victorian tale in its history, beyond its thatched cottage and picture postcard village pond…

oday, Aldbury is the destination for tourists from near and far, who come armed with cameras to capture this pretty English village, complete with thatched cottages and ancient buildings. It’s favoured by walkers and cyclists who enjoy its location near the Ashridge Estate. And despite the presence of the village stocks by the pond, which have stood there for several hundred years, it’s hard to imagine that at one time, the village and criminal activities of some of its residents, came under the hard glare of national publicity.

Most crime in Aldbury in the 20th and 21st century has been of the fictional variety - with the likes of TV series Morse and Midsummer Murders filmed there, but in 1891, it was poaching that was attracting attention… By the late 19th century, Victorian policing had helped to bring about a more lawful society on the whole, but when it came to game laws, poachers and gamekeepers often went into battle, and so it was in the case of the Aldbury poachers. Three poachers were taken to court over the deaths of two gamekeepers. The trial brought much attention, with angry exchanges in Parliament, petitions to the Home Office and much national debate. Both gamekeepers were employed by Joseph Grout Williams, owner of Pendley Manor at the time and a prominent Conservative and Justice of the Peace. The area was renowned for fashionable weekend shooting parties, thanks to its location not far from London.

The issue at the heart of the case seemed to be less about murder but rather centred on it not being possible to steal game birds and animals because they were, in fact, wild by nature. And there were also assertions that poaching was a ‘lost’ English liberty, thanks to the hunting monopoly introduced after the Norman Conquest. Indeed, according to Stephen Ridgwell, writing for History Today: ‘In the month preceding events at Aldbury, Kier Hardie’s Labour Leader expressed admiration for the ‘honest and independent poacher’ and cast the ‘landlord and his bullying crew of gamekeepers’ as the real criminals.’ The event happened on the evening of 12 December 1891 in Aldbury Nowers woods. The three poachers - two labourers and a chair-turner - set off for the wood on the hunt for pheasants. The men were all in their 30s, married with families, and were experienced poachers. During the winter, work was no doubt scarce and while their defence might have said that their motivation was economic they did commit an office by going out armed.

The incident even made it into the novel, Marcella, by social commentator and author Mary Augusta Ward, who included some details of the case in her book, published in 1894. Mary had been living in Stocks, the Georgian manor in Aldbury, since the summer of 1892, close to the place where the gamekeepers were killed. When the gamekeepers confronted them, however, the poachers decided to fight back rather than run away or be detained (facing up to 14 years in prison for a poaching offence). At the end of the trial in February 1892, the poacher who had fled the scene at the time, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter while the other two were given the death sentence. Following sentencing, a jury member announced their doubts about the verdict and there followed calls for a reprieve and the national debate on game laws was rekindled, with the likes of Robert Buchanan, a humanitarian and writer, and the naturalist Alfred Wallace weighing in on the debate. Despite the outcry, the sentences remained and the two men found guilty of murder were hanged at Oxford Gaol in March 1892. Aldbury Nowers woods is now reputed to be haunted…

• 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 2 red peppers, deseeded and chopped • 1 clove garlic, peeled and minced • 250g shredded cold turkey • 75g pitted black olives • 2 tbsp soured cream • 2 tbsp leftover turkey stock • 1 egg • A few dashes of Tabasco sauce, or to taste • 75g grated Parmesan • 1–2 tbsp chopped flatleaf parsley to garnish (optional)

1. Toss the flaked almonds in a hot, dry pan over a medium to high heat until toasted. Remove to a plate for a while.

2. Add the butter and oil to the pan, then throw in the chopped onions and peppers and cook, stirring, over a medium to low heat for about 10 minutes. 3. Stir in the garlic, then add the shredded turkey and cook until piping hot. Return the reserved toasted flaked almonds to the pan, add the olives and mix in. 4. Whisk together the soured cream, turkey stock and egg, then pour into the pan, give a quick stir to combine and shake in the Tabasco sauce. 5. Finally, add the grated Parmesan and stir until it begins to melt into the hash. On serving, sprinkle with chopped parsley, if wished. Top tip Channel your inner Nigella and feel free to make whatever swaps necessary to suit your tastes and provisions at hand. No turkey? No problem, shredded gammon would work just as well.

The Ponies and Taren By Pam Howard Pam’s books regularly feature on our pages, but usually involve dragons and Ashridge woods. This time, Pam has focused on another animal, with this tale of Taren, who wins a scholarship to a private school that has a wonderful stables. Taren may be pony mad, but she’s also football crazy, and when her chance to play on the school team is scuppered by an unfortunate incident, she has to clear her name. Tackling the school bully, she is supported by her friend Max, who is star of the boys’ football team. This very readable school story is aimed at children aged eight-plus, and proves how kindness and honesty can win through. A lovely read for anyone who likes football, ponies or both! hilfest music festival will certainly not need a hard sell next year as they’ve secured a Soft Cell icon in Marc Almond as headliner. The 80s legend tops another fantastic lineup for 2024 for the family-friendly festival in Tring on 5-6 July. Almost half of the acts this year are making their Chilfest debut. Go West will be bringing a dose of Californian sunshine. Nik Kershaw hopes to keep the sunshine going with his die-hard hit I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me. The crowd will be in heaven with a visit from Glenn Gregory

and Martyn Ware of Heaven 17 and their mega crowd-pleaser Temptation. Ska royalty The Selecter are guaranteed to get the revellers on their feet and other acts include 90s favourites The Farm, East 17 and Baby D. odie’s early childhood was a happy one. This changed when she was 10 years old when a close family member started abusing her. The abuse continued for years, until she left home at 16 to escape. Initially, Jodie coped ok, finding a job and a flat. But over time, the trauma of her childhood reemerged, and her drinking spiraled out of control. Jodie lost her job, and then her home. She was homeless. Thankfully, Jodie found DENS who gave her emergency accommodation, and this is where her journey to recovery started.
