CITY PROJECTS
LANSDOWNE WALK LONDON
The brief was to create an ultra modern terrace with a sense of privacy, whilst maintaining open views of the London skyline. The design and layout of the terrace allows for areas to relax, plus sections which lend themselves to entertaining guests. To fulfil the entertainment part of the brief, RSA installed an outdoor plasma TV screen to provide viewing pleasure on those balmy summer evenings. However, the central focus is a water feature, which issoothingtohearandaestheticallypleasing, particularlyatnightwhen the fibre optics up-light the stainless steel weaved curtain wall feature and create a spectacular attraction. Lighting is a key feature of the terrace to add glamour and to fit in with thetwinklingLondonskyline: theelegantsilverbirchtreesareuplit and the planter boxes have a blue tinted glow. The general planting has been kept relatively simple. There is a Yew hedge as a backdrop incorporatingpittosporum, lavenderandwhiteagapanthusalongwith rosemaryandolivetreesculminatinginaMediterraneanfeelamongst the city lights.
OAKHILL AVENUE LONDON Contemporary renovation of an Arts and Craft House in Hampstead, remaining true to the movement’s philosophy through the use of specialist natural materials and bespoke hand made construction for all the garden elements. The main body of the garden has at its centre a fine formal lawn flanked by tall Hornbeam columns elements which lead the eye to the end of the vista which is enclosed by a sculpturalYew hedging. All the spaces have been designed not just to be enjoyed in the day but also at night and are lit with discreet lighting fixtures which accentuate the sculptural pieces, specimen planting and gently guide one from space to space.
HOLLAND PARK LONDON
Randle Siddeley Associates were appointed to modernise a structured and formal garden into a tranquil urban retreat; a secret garden in heart of London. The client’s brief was to create a relaxed environment as well as a recreational space for two children. The garden consists of an open lawn surrounded by rich planting which is framed by an espalier hedge focused on a hidden door on the axis of the property. Various ‘rooms’ in the garden create interest as you walk through the garden spaces. The main feature is a timber pergola that is overgrown with fragrant old fashioned roses, forming a green garland. Two feature urns placed at either end create a visual link that leads you around the garden and into the next‘room’. A rhythm of wooden obelisks was introduced to accompany an arrangement of box balls and verdant shrubs creating a traditional English herbaceous border.
THE VALE LONDON The Vale is set within the Conservation area in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It comprises a Grade II Listed family dwelling and rear garden. The brief was to create an urban outdoor landscape space comprising lower and upper terraces that house separate dining and seating areas. Planting beds were set within and around the existingprotectedMagnoliatree, alongwithalineartrellisstructure with climbers to soften the space. An infinity-style water feature flowing from the upper to lower terrace adds movement and creates a focal point from the kitchen.
THE OLD GARDEN LONDON
The Old Garden is a 3.2 acre property. The brief was to take an established, tired garden from the early 20th century into the 21st century while still keeping the old skeleton (including many valuable mature trees) incorporating a simple, classic layout. The overall framework of the garden was kept with a central axis leading from the house half-way down the garden to a centrally placed ‘D’ which marks the change to differing sections within the garden. From this point, paths flow out in a classic Patte d’Oie (Goosefoot) format, forming an axis to the swimming pool, tennis court and Yew Walk. The overall effect is to give a more relaxed and elegant feel to the garden.
OLD CHURCH STREET LONDON LocatedintheheartofChelsea, thissmallroofgardenwasdesigned withsimplicityinmind. Cleanlinesandclippedplantingwereused to achieve a semi-formal garden that uses the space efficiently whilst ensuring it remainsopenanduncluttered. The main feature of the garden is the bronze water feature that was installed along the main wall with clippedTaxus hedges on either side providing structure. Planting for the scheme was carefully chosen to provide further interest andensureyearroundcolour, withthecloudclippedTaxus hedge creating a living sculpture.
THE BOLTONS LONDON
The bold design of this small but prestigious London garden affords a deceptive illusion of depth and space. The adventurous employment of structured features are laid out to a contrasting simple grid design. Together with an adjoining area of lawn and two water features, the combinationhascreatedagardenthatisbothrelaxingandMediterranean. Planting around the perimeter of the garden focuses on a simple colour schemeofcreams, whites, bluesandgreenspecies. Miniatureboxhedging detail defines and connects contrasting areas of this strikingly different and stylish city garden.
KENSINGTON GREEN ESTATE LONDON Completed in 1995, the site covers some nine acres and is situated between Marlowe’s Road and Cornwall Gardens in west London. The development is a private residential enclave consisting of housing, 364 apartments and underground carparking. The gardens include some large open spaces and the planting has matured to become extremely lavish, giving each building its own identity and creating an oasis in the heart of central London.
THE KNIGHTSBRIDGE LONDON
The brief was to create an ultra modern terrace with a sense of privacy, whilst maintaining open views of the London skyline. The design and layout of the terrace allows for areas to relax, plus sections which lend themselves to entertaining guests. The objective was to create an extension of indoor space on the outside. To fulfil the entertainment part of the brief, RSA installed an outdoor plasma TV screen to provide viewing pleasure on those balmy summer evenings. However, the central focus is a water feature, which is soothing to hear and aesthetically pleasing, particularly at night when the fibre optics up-light the stainless steel weaved curtain wall feature and create a spectacular attraction. Lighting is a key feature of the terrace to add glamour and to fit in with the twinkling London skyline: the elegant silver birch trees are up-lit and the planter boxes have a blue tinted glow. The general planting has been kept relatively simple. There is a Yew hedge as a backdrop incorporating pittosporum, lavenderandwhiteagapanthusalongwithrosemaryandolive trees culminating in a Mediterranean feel amongst the city lights.

GEORGIAN COUNTRY ESTATE GLOUCESTERSHIRE
SituatedinadeepCotswoldvalley, therestorationofthisGeorgianCountry Estate with its Grade ll listed house, was centred on reworking the steeply sloping gardens that were overshadowing the rear of the house. An initial major cut and fill exercise of over two acres, adjacent to the rear of the house, led to the creation of a series of new gardens incorporating a swimming pool, tennis courts and terraces. Green oak and Cotswold stone from the estate were used to form the terraces and steps. The views and links to the wider countryside were carefully balanced to achieve an open, elegant setting in the classic English Landscape style.
TUSMORE ENGLAND RSA was commissioned to redesign a series of formal gardens associatedwith the main house. The gardens, including parterres, were designed to reflect the character and historic elements of the house. Formal planting of box hedging andYew balls contain perennialsandannualsforseasonalcolour, andcascadealongside the restored steps and terraces.
EDWARDIAN HOUSE BERKSHIRE
RSA was involved in the sympathetic landscaping of a newly refurbished Edwardian House overlooking a golf course. The aim of the design was to create a balance between the house and its surroundings. Softened by cypress trees, borders of wisteria and hundreds of agapanthus mixed with lavender, now descend to the main terrace from the colonnade. The existing paving, which was removed and reused on the pool terrace, was replaced with creamy yellow York paving stones. Planting for the scheme was carefully chosen to screen and diffuse the architectural disparities, as well as enhance the garden views.
OLD RECTORY HAMPSHIRE Set in 10 acres, the Old Rectory near Winchester was worthy of a more gracious setting which would afford the house a presence in keeping with its elegant red brick Georgian architecture. The restoration and design of the garden included the re-creation of a sweeping 18th Century driveway and a new lake to separate the estate from a public footpath.
