Randolph-Macon Academy Middle School Summer Enrichment Camp July 1-13 and/or July 15-27, 2018 Enrich Your Summer
Application Process
2018 Theme: Innovative Minds
To be considered for admission, students must complete a summer program application and submit copies of their transcripts and one letter of recommendation from a school official. An in-person or phone/video interview will also be arranged. The application should be completed online (www.rma.edu/Apply-Online). Financial aid is not available for R-MA’s summer programs.
Love history, music, or writing? How about robotics or science?
This year’s theme for the following sessions stems around young inventor’s minds. Our camp will offer many opportunities for students to explore innovation and imagine the possibilities through history, engineering, designing, and creating.
Note that the four-week session runs July 1-27, 2018. The two-week options are July 1-13 and July 15-27.
Science Explorer*:
Students will use a variety of simple machines to invent Rube Goldberg challenges. Weekly inventions will provide students opportunities to collaborate and think creatively with their peers.
Reading & Writing:
Engage in non-fictional text that describes some of the greatest inventors of all time. Create digital text that is both interactive and animated.
A SUMMER TO REMEMBER.
History in Action:
Recreate some of the most influential architectural features from the early civilizations by using everyday materials. Let your imagination head to another world with hands-on activities on a daily basis.
Build Skills
Need to brush up on math or improve your study skills?
Basic Math:
Focus on basic operations and word problems with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Pre-Algebra:
Learn about equations, the use of rational numbers, inequalities, and functions. Connect algebraic functions to geometry.
Study Skills:
Discover the methodology of proper study habits, what works and what does not. Practice organizational, note-taking, and reading skills, and learn proper research and writing skills.
Join the Randolph-Macon Academy Middle School Enrichment Camp for two weeks or four weeks. Take three to four courses in the morning, and have fun in the afternoon (and on weekends)!
English as a Second Language:
This four-week immersion course provides classroom-based learning and interactive trips off campus. Students stay in age-appropriate dorms. For more information, visit www.rma.edu/summer-esl.
*Note: There are four periods each day. The Science Explorer runs for two periods; students taking this session can only choose two additional topics for the summer.
Other Enrichment Courses Available Programming and Robotics:
This course aims to teach students core computer programming logic and reasoning skills using a robotic engineering context tailored to bring the magic of robotics competition into the classroom. Students will use the Lego MINDSTORMS EV3 platform for research, construction, programming, and team collaboration.
Music Technology:
Learn how to play piano using R-MA’s MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) lab. Each work station features a full 88-key keyboard with weighted keys and alternate instrumentation. Compose, play, and record your own music! Activities pictured are from past summer camps. Activities will vary each year.
