Day after day, massive protests have erupted in scores of cities across America in response to Donald Trump’s election to the presidency of the United States. They are ignoring the counsel of political leaders who had failed them―political leaders who seem willfully ignorant of how well Trump fits the worldwide pattern of autocratic authoritarian rulers.

One of them, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, even played a murky behind-the-scenes role in Trump’s victory, following a documented pattern of Russian support for rightwing nationalist politicians across Western Europe.

At the same time, a wave of hate crimes have swept across the country. The Southern Poverty Law Center collected 437 reports of hateful intimidation and harassment between the day after the election and the following Monday.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Paul Ryan renewed talk of privatizing Medicare—the epitome of the out-of-touch elitist GOP agenda that Trump ran against. Trump’s repeated defense of Medicare and Social Security was an early part of his base appeal.

Report Reveals Racial Bias In Long Beach Schools

Salazar noted that there is no evidence of more misbehavior by black or Latino students relative to white students to justify the disproportionate amount of disciplinary actions. She said that implicit bias is part of the explanation for the inequitable treatment of black students relative to white students. Implicit bias is a subconscious application of stereotypes in the judgment of an individual and their behavior.

“Implicit biases are pervasive,” the social justice Kiwan Institute cited in the report.

“Everyone possesses them, even people with avowed commitments to impartiality such as judges.”

Building Healthy Communities, an organization that works to improve health in the city, is trying to help end the racial disparity in Long Beach Unified schools. It helped Long Beach students and alumni form the Every Student Matters campaign.

Every Student Matters wants to see Long Beach Unified enact a comprehensive plan to reduce suspensions for all overrepresented groups. The campaign and the Untold Stories report are also in favor of the district adopting implicit bias training for school employees.

“Long Beach [schools are] successful in many ways but need to focus more on guaranteeing the success of male African American students and increasing parent engagement,” said Rev. Leon Wood in the report.

However representatives from the Every Student Matters Campaign feel like the district does not take their efforts seriously.

“It has been a struggle to have a meaningful conversation,” Salazar said. “The district will invite us to a school board a meeting and let us give testimony, but there is no admission that there are systematic issues regarding race.”

Chris Eftychiou, the district’s public information director, downplayed the issue and cited the district’s press release on the Untold Stories report.

“We’re repeatedly recognized as one of America’s best school systems,” the release stated. “High-need students in our school district have made great advances.”

The release did acknowledge that more black students are suspended than white students in the district. But it also asserted that the report’s data analysis and conclusions were incorrect.

According to the district’s data, black students are six times more likely to be suspended than white students.

“By comparison to other school districts, both in California and nationally, our suspension rate is very low and our students miss significantly fewer days as a result of being suspended,” Eftychiou said.

The Untold Stories report suggested that LBUSD is slow to recognize its faults because it is doing well overall in terms of performance.

The district won the Broad Prize for Urban Schools, which is considered to be the highest honor a U.S. public school can get. And, a study released by nonprofit, Battelle for Kids, found Long Beach Unified to be among the top 20 performing school districts worldwide.

Salazar said that the district’s progress is based mostly on averages. Her report identified

By Christian L. Guzman, Community Reporter The Long Beach Unified School District is racially inequitable when it comes to disciplinary actions, according to a recent report by the Children’s Defense Fund and Public Council.

Released this past October, the report, Untold Stories Behind One of America’s Best Urban School Districts, confirmed some longtime suspicions.

“Before the report there were anecdotes, first-hand accounts and surveys to support [racial inequality],” said Angelica Salazar, one of the report’s co-authors and senior policy associate for Children’s Defense Fund. “But it was still surprising to see how big the discrepancies were.”

In the Long Beach Unified School District, black and white students each make up 14 percent of total enrolled students. According to the report, there were 27 suspensions per 100 black students in the 2014-2015 school year. But there were only two suspensions per 100 white students. Black students are also transferred to other schools for disorderly conduct more often than white students. The transfers are known as “involuntary transfers” and “referrals for immediate action.” The latter functions like an

expulsion. In the 2014-2015 school year, about half of disciplinary transfers were for black students.

Student encounters with school security, and police outside of school, overwhelmingly involve black and Latino students. The groups make up 69 percent of the total student population, however they represent 86 percent of incidents with police.

Local Reactions to Trump Election Harbor Area residents were surprised by the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. But as part of the California electorate, which cast 70 percent of its votes for Hillary Clinton, they didn’t seem very intimidated. World Gets 35 Years Closer to Ending AIDS

To say the least, Ace Robinson was a late bloomer.

“I didn’t know I was gay until the middle of undergrad,” Robinson, 38, said. “I was close to 20 years old when I figured it.”

For Robinson, the era of big hair, material girls (and boys) and MTV is a distant memory. He also was too young then to be directly impacted

by AIDS, a disease that changed the way we have sex. Millions of people, many of whom were gay men, died from ailments related to the disease since 1981, the year outbreaks were first noted.

Much has changed in the past 35 years since

AIDS was first clinically observed in the United States. Education and prevention efforts have helped curb the growth of the disease. With the advent of new medications people living with HIV now are living much longer and fuller lives.

In fact, according to the Centers Disease Control and Prevention, the number of new HIV diagnoses fell 19 percent from 2005 to 2014.

Most people who take their medications properly and consistently can live full lives.

Today, he is the executive director of the Comprehensive AIDS Resource and Education, C.A.R.E., Program at Dignity Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Long Beach.

Long Beach is one of the most HIV-impacted cities in Los Angeles County.

In 2012, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported that Long Beach had more HIV infections than any other region in the county.

Recently, the Department of Public Health named the C.A.R.E. Program a Center of Excellence, awarding a $90,000 grant. The program will offer PrEP-related services to people whether or not they are insured or underinsured. That is on top of the fact that MediCal, Covered California and a PrEP provision in the budget signed by Gov. Jerry Brown in June, help facilitate access to the treatment.

Let’s Talk About PrEP

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP is a oncea-day medication, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2012. People who are not living with HIV can take it to prevent HIV infection when exposed. When taken consistently, Truvada®, the only approved drug for PrEP, has proven to have 92 percent effectiveness.

According to the CDC studies have shown that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by more than 90 percent when used consistently.

Among people who inject drugs, PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV by more than 70 percent when used consistently.

Truvada contains two drugs in one pill.

For HIV-positive people, it slows down the replication of the virus within immune cells. For HIV-negative people, if they’re exposed to the virus, the medicine will prevent the virus from more fully infecting the immune system.

Alan McCord, director of education at Project Inform, an organization that provides up-to-date information and advocacy on HIV and Hepatitis C, explained that HIV needs to get inside immune cells and merge with their genes in order to make more HIV and cause a chronic infection. PrEP works because both drugs get into and stay inside immune cells as long as daily PrEP is taken. This way, the drugs are already in place well before HIV shows up. Should an HIV transmission occur, PrEP stops HIV’s life cycle well before chronic infection occurs; and HIV eventually dies because it can’t reproduce enough to cause a chronic infection.

faith that Trump has been waging war against for the past 18 months. The press is already under serious assault—as a proliferation of fake news sites and stories helped Trump get elected—and the courts are surely not far behind.

4: Be outraged. Even though—following Rule No. 1—you’re not surprised. “This will lead people to call you unreasonable and hysterical, and to accuse you of overreacting,” Gessen warns. “It is no fun to be the only hysterical person in the room. Prepare yourself.”

5: Don’t make compromises. Gessen offers Ted Cruz as Exhibit ‘A’ of what not to do. “Those who argue for cooperation will make the case, much as President Obama did in his speech, that cooperation is essential for the future,” he warns.

“They will be willfully ignoring the corrupting touch of autocracy, from which the future must be protected.”

6: Remember the future is Gessen’s last rule, and it carries a glimmer of hope—but also a message of responsibility: “Nothing lasts

forever,” he writes. “Donald Trump certainly will not, and Trumpism, to the extent that it is centered on Trump’s persona, will not either.”

But it was failure to imagine the future that helped hand Trump the election in the first place.

Democrats “offered no vision of the future to counterbalance Trump’s all-too-familiar whitepopulist vision of an imaginary past.”

Gessen isn’t the only one with this sort of background or experience. Susan Faludi, author of Backlash and Stiffed, has written about Hungary’s recent authoritarian turn, and its echoes Trump’s America. Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán “enjoy a certain kissing-cousin resemblance,” she noted, starting with Trump’s wall-building fetish and Orbán’s “thirteen-foothigh razor-wire fence running 110 miles across the Serbian border to keep out Syrian refugees.”

Mexicans and Muslims top Trump’s enemies list, Roma and Jews top Orbán’s.

Sarah Kendzior is a Saint Louis-based writer, a trained anthropologist who’s done academic research in Central Asian authoritarian states.

She was one of the first writers to warn that Trump could be elected president, even before the GOP primaries started.

In May she wrote an op-ed titled Trump is the smartest candidate: He’s running on American pain.

“Having studied authoritarian states for over a decade, I would never exaggerate the severity of the threat we now face,” Kendzior recently wrote. “But an American kleptocracy is exactly where President-elect Trump and his backers are taking us.”

Trump ran, absurdly, as a billionaire “populist,” despite a long record of bullying, abusing, and ripping off the little guy (workers, small business owners, “Trump University” [See Fascist page 10]

Trump’s Telling Appointments:

Racists, Climate Deniers, Unqualified Loyalists

Donald Trump’s first wave of government appointments showed early hallmarks of his authoritarian tendencies, comprised of bigots, ideologues and men picked for their personal loyalty.

Following an early period of disarray, Trump appointed men with well-known racist or religiously bigoted records to prominent posts: Steve Bannon to be chief White House strategist, Sen. Jeff Sessions to be attorney General, and Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn to be National Security Advisor. Bannon proudly declared he had made Breitbart.com the platform for the “altright,” as white supremacists want to be called nowadays. No less a conservative beacon than Glenn Beck called him “a nightmare,” when his appointment was announced, adding, “He is a terrifying man.” Sessions—the first senator to appear with Trump on the campaign trail—was too racist to be confirmed as a federal judge by the GOP-run Senate Judiciary Committee in 1986, and Flynn has equated all Muslims with terrorists on multiple occasions. Beyond that, he has neither the background nor the temperament to mediate the views of multiple different agencies, which is what his position requires.

All three men are also climate change deniers, as are two other top picks announced by Trump, Rep. Mike Pompeo to be CIA Director (a frustrated Benghazi Committee Hillary Clinton hunter with no background in intelligence, and major funding from the Koch brothers), and RNC Chair Reince Priebus to be White House chief of staff. When he is sworn in, Trump will be the only climate change denying world leader, wildly out of step with the rest of the world, but surrounded by an echo chamber of equally ignorant ideologues. That same week, 197 nations signed on to The Marrakech Action Proclamation, saying that every country has an “urgent duty to respond” to the climate change threat.

Typically elected with minority support, autocratic rulers like Putin, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, or Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán consolidate their power by violating existing democratic norms; threatening, bribing and intimidating others in secret; and demonizing vulnerable racial, ethnic, religious and sexual minorities, as well as their political opposition and the free press—much of which Trump has already done during his campaign.

They rely heavily on manipulative political theater, in place of sound, empirically-based policies arrived at through public deliberation.

And the worse and the more regularly their policies fail, the more intensely and elaborately they shift blame onto others. They also benefit enormously from the erosion of hard-won social trust in established institutions. (See sidebar “Fake News Helped Elect Trump.”)

As for bringing the nation together, outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid stood virtually alone in pointing out the obvious.

“If this is going to be a time of healing, we must first put the responsibility for healing where it belongs: at the feet of Donald Trump, a sexual predator who lost the popular vote and fueled his campaign with bigotry and hate,” Reid said in a press release. At press time, Clinton’s popular vote lead was almost 1.7 million votes.

“Winning the electoral college does not absolve Trump of the grave sins he committed against millions of Americans… If Trump wants to roll back the tide of hate he unleashed, he has a tremendous amount of work to do and he must begin immediately.”

Trump’s first wave of appointments the following week proved just how right Reid had been. (See sidebar below “Trump’s Troubling Appointments”.) But other leading Democrats seemed oblivious to what was going on.

“We must accept this result and then look to the future. Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead,” Hillary Clinton said, as if she weren’t speaking about a man who campaigned on locking her up—and still might try to do so.

“We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country,” President Barack Obama added. “We all go forward with a presumption of good faith in our fellow citizens, because that presumption of good faith is essential to a vibrant and functioning democracy.”

But Trump is the very epitome of a badfaith actor, as noted by Masha Gessen, author of The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin. Writing for the New York Review of Books, Gessen, who has lived in autocracies most of her life, and spent much of her career writing about Vladimir Putin’s Russia, laid out a set of six “Rules for Survival” in an autocracy: 1: Believe the autocrat. He means what he says. If you think he’s exaggerating, that’s just your instinct to rationalize the unacceptable.

(Sidenote: The U.S. press did this with Hitler back in the 1930s. It did not end well.)

2: Do not be taken in by small signs of normality. Indeed, books like They Thought They Were Free, written in 1955, make it quite clear that superficial normalcy was one of Nazi Germany’s most malignant features.

3: Institutions will not save you. America’s institutions are much stronger than Russia’s where Gessen learned this lesson first-hand. “Many of these institutions are enshrined in political culture rather than in law, and all of them—including the ones enshrined in law—depend on the good faith of all actors to fulfill their purpose and uphold the Constitution,” he notes. It’s precisely that good

Carson Improvement Delays

Carson residents have been asking why the Carson Street improvement plan is more than a year behind schedule and almost three times over budget.

The answer in part is that the city has been planning five districts along the Carson Street corridor between the 110 and the 405 interstates: the West Gateway, the Community Shopping District (intersection of Carson and Main streets), the Boulevard Residential District, the Downtown Retail District (intersection of Carson Street and Avalon Boulevard including the civic center) and the East Gateway.

The Carson Street Master Plan says the five districts are intended to give those areas a “main street” character in a pedestrian-friendly mixeduse environment.

The master plan also touts a “beautiful, vibrant” main street that creates a more attractive

environment, while preserving significant buildings and Carson Street’s cultural diversity.

New curbing, landscaping, paving, traffic islands, and amenities for pedestrians are being put in.

Work began last year, and is expected to drag on for another one.

City staffer Gilbert Marquez said that a major reason for the delay and cost is the additional work needed on a reclaimed water line.

Marquez said the budget was originally $7 million and is now closer to $19 million. All that money comes from successor agency funds.

“The original bid amount to install the reclaimed water line on Carson Street from [the] I-405 freeway to [the] I-110 freeway was $1,287,930.00,” Marquez described in an email.

“As the installation of the reclaimed water line continued to progress, several utility line conflicts have been encountered which resulted in further modifications to the pipeline design…. To date, the contractor has completed the installation of the reclaimed water line along Carson Street from west of Main St. to west of Avalon Boulevard, at a cost of approximately $2,365,000.”

Marquez stated the work on the pipeline is required according to the West Basin Municipal Water District’s specifications. That means each time the plan is revised, approval from West Basin and the Department of Health is required.

“Additional pipelines [the city] didn’t know were there [keep being found every time construction has to go over or under those pipelines],” said Donald L. Dear, who sits on the West Basin board.

Recently, West Basin’s general manager, Rich Nagel, sent a letter to the city about the water board’s view of the issue.

“West Basin has been a cooperative and responsive advisor to the City on its project, including advising on incomplete data that the City ought to consider,” he wrote. ”However,

the City did not accept West Basin’s design review comments initially, resulting in additional expenses and delays which could have been minimized.”

This has led to conflict between the city and water board over the additional cost, which Nagel’s letter also addressed.

“At no point prior to or during the construction of the Carson Street pipeline project, did West Basin’s Board of Directors or management make any commitment to cover the costs of the City’s pipeline project,” the letter stated.

“West Basin Board of Directors has authorized an offer of $842,134 to assist the City in funding the additional cost to complete the pipeline installation from the current construction limit to Bonita Street,” said Amy Rocha of the West Basin Water District, in an email.

While the city continues to tie up traffic on Carson Street, there are no active plans for

improving other major traffic thoroughfares such as Avalon Boulevard or Carson’s actual Main Street.

Several blocks of Filipino-American businesses clustered around the intersection of Carson and Main streets are sometimes called Little Manila, and they’ve been seeking official recognition from the city for years.

Carson council member Elito Santarina, a Filipino-American, says he prefers the designation “Fil-Am Business District” to “Little Manila” because he wants to emphasize the district is both Filipino and American.

Santarina says he’s currently promoting the Fil-Am district with the city and business investors, “planting seeds,” he calls it.

“I’m not going to proceed without 100 percent support,” he said.

Only when he has that support will he seek a council vote on the project, he said.

But even if LBUSD does heed the Every Student Matters campaign and schools become more equitable, it uses a flawed disciplinary system.

Studies in the Journal of School Psychology and by the National Center of Education have concluded that negative punishments, like suspensions, can actually perpetuate negative student behaviors.

“Students who are suspended lose important instructional time, and are more likely to fall behind in school, drop out, and have contact with the juvenile justice system,” Untold Stories reported.

The American Civil Liberties Union found that if a student is arrested, the chances of her or him dropping out doubles. Then if the student has to appear in court, the drop out chances quadruple.

“Schools need to be patient with their students, reach out to their students, and strive for excellence without complaining,” Wood said.

“Students must know that we love them.”

Every Student Matters is lobbying for the district to adopt what’s known as a positive school climate.

In this regime, school faculty would apply restorative justice and trauma-informed strategies when addressing misbehavior. Restorative practices emphasize communication between those who misbehave and those who are affected, with the goal of agreeing on how to repair harms done.

“When students walk into the classroom, they come with experiences that impact their

education,” Salazar said. “We need to bring in support for them [to succeed]: tutors to support academic performance, nurses for their health, counselors for their mental health.”

The American School Counselor Association recommends at least one per 250 students in a school. Long Beach Unified has one counselor per 320 students.

The Every Student Matters Campaign is urging the district to hire more counselors and to pay for them by allocating less money to law enforcement. In the 2015-2016 school year, the LBUSD spent $7.72 million on law enforcement.

The district’s press release defended the amount.

“Would anyone argue that we shouldn’t at least spend one percent of our [total] budget on School Safety and Emergency Preparedness?

This study’s authors do,” the release stated.

In the same year, the LBUSD allocated $190,000 for positive school climate principles.

None of it was spent.

“There needs to be a paradigm shift,” Salazar said.

Since the report released, the Children’s Defense Fund and Every Student Matters Campaign have been disseminating it throughout Long Beach, including churches, mental health organizations, teachers and unions.

“With the election of the new president and the racial discord across the country, what we are doing is even more important now,” Salazar said.

“We need [LBUSD] to provide teachers with the tools to manage students and students with the tools to manage themselves. And, with the help of the community ... the district will treat everyone with dignity and respect.”

SAN PEDRO — Cargo volumes at the Port of Los Angeles increased almost16 percent in October compared to the same period the past year, marking the busiest month ever at a Western Hemisphere container port, according to data collected by the American Association of Port Authorities.

Total volumes registered at 814,574 twenty-foot equivalents, TEUs, eclipsing the previous record of 800,063 TEUs at the POLA in October 2006.

October imports increased 16.4 percent to 417,311 TEUs. Exports jumped 23.3 percent to 166,406 TEUs. Along with an 18.3 percent surge in empty containers, overall October container volumes were 814,574 TEUs. With total cargo volumes through the first 10 months of 2016 at 7,182,682 TEUs, it represents an increase of 5.25 percent compared to the same period in 2015. Led by the mayors of Los Angeles and Long Beach, officials of the two local ports proudly unveiled their new draft Clean Air Action Plan at a joint board meeting on Nov. 17—a plan intended to “serve as a roadmap for continued emission reduction activities … for the next 20 years,” according to the plan’s draft discussion document.

The mood was heavy with selfcongratulations and in some respects well-justified. Since 2005, before the initial CAAP was adopted, “portrelated diesel particulate matter (DPM) has dropped 84 percent, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are down 50 percent, and sulfur oxides (SOx) have nearly been eliminated,” the draft noted.

What’s more, the plan’s mix of incentives and mandates has given birth to a robust new clean energy/ transportation industry whose representatives overwhelmingly dominated the public comment section of the meeting.

“What I saw here today, we created an industry,” Los Angeles Harbor Commission Vice President David Arian said toward the end of the meeting.

Fig Trees Are Like Democracies

Harbor Area, Trump won zero precincts. Still, it hurts deeply to see the reigns of this nation being politely transferred over to a corrupt, crass blowhard like Donald Trump from the otherwise competent and intelligent control of President Barack Obama. It clearly pains Obama to explain this to our foreign allies as much as it pains us to explain it to ourselves.

Our form of democracy is a curious one. It’s a compromise handed down to us by the founding fathers. The compromise allows a candidate to be elected president, even after losing the popular vote—for the fifth time in our nation’s history. At least that will be the case unless 61 electors on Dec. 19 decide to become “faithless” to their party and make Clinton the winner.

This from the National Archives and Records Administration explains why: The U.S. Supreme Court has held that the Constitution does not require that Electors be completely free to act as they choose and therefore, political parties may extract pledges from electors to vote for the parties’ nominees.

Some state laws provide that so-called “faithless Electors” may be subject to fines or may be disqualified for casting an invalid vote and be replaced by a substitute elector. The Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on the question of whether pledges and penalties for failure to vote as pledged may be enforced under the Constitution. No Elector has ever been prosecuted for failing to vote as pledged.

So here we are: one of the least-qualified individuals is to be sworn into our highest office and there appears to be nothing—short of him being indicted for any of the numerous past corrupt business deals—to stop him.

As one blogger put it, “On 9/11, we were attacked from outside our country, on 11/9 we were attacked from inside.”

However there’s resistance brewing. The group ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) announced its protest during Trump’s inauguration, “Stand Against Trump, War,

Racism and Inequality,” and there are more planned around the nation on the same day, including one in Los Angeles.

The outrage and the growing number of protests are reminiscent of Richard Nixon’s inauguration to his second term in office in 1973, the backdrop of a horribly divided nation after 15 years of war in Vietnam. That wound in our democracy was only triaged with Nixon’s impeachment and resignation, but our nation never really healed. One can only hope that

our Congress, the media and our people have the courage to hold Trump to the highest test of democracy, and that test is the one of fair and equal governance.

In the end, we the people must be prepared to “prune this tree of democracy” once again for the price of liberty is eternal vigilance! We can only hope that he doesn’t chop it down because he’s short on the wood he needs for building the wall.

Do You Remember When?

As I walked out of a local hospital I looked around and saw that almost everybody was younger than me. It brought back memories of a time at a new job, when I was the youngest employee and the older workers called me newbie or young blood.

In thinking about time, one surmises that time creates activity, experiences, or past, and history. All of that is good if you are a college professor, but when you are older time engenders thoughts of remember-whens. The rememberwhens are noble because they are wisdom. But the older must avoid corraling all conversation into remember-whens because they impose by prerogative, prologue to the next topic of conversation.

At some point, remember-whens become screeching dog whistles, especially to the

young, and they prematurely close down a sage information system. Where older folks see fun in the reminiscing, younger folks hear the names of San Pedro heros like Johnson, Naulls, Shinnick, Harris and Werhas and perceive stone-aged muses who are no longer inspiring or perhaps never had life.

Remember-whens are Americana because there is irony in the wisdom of the old man down the street. But each person must judge the utility of the old man’s words, and whether they will be respected.

When I look back at walking down Gaffey Street (the Kings Highway) from Barton Hill to the Boys Club I would always see a friend.

We would talk about what was happening that day. Now, when we see each other, we say, “Remember when?” and just smile.

Serving the Seven Communities of the Harbor Area

As of this writing the American voters have cast 63,541,056 votes nationally for Hillary Clinton for President. That is 1,677,041 more votes than Donald Trump and the counting hasn’t stopped.

Yet, those crucial votes were not cast in the Rust Belt states that gave the presidency to the Republican candidate—a man who is ideologically more orange than red. This orange-man candidate won most of these states by a percentage point or less. America is truly divided.

The flipping of the three Rust Belt states that hadn’t gone Republican since the 1980s was the big election surprise—and the decisive one. And, the most embarrassing thing of all is that the majority of the political pollsters got their predictions wrong.

This nation is not only divided by the embarrassingly crass language of the Electoral College winner (I’m still having a hard time calling him president-elect), but also by his astoundingly right-wing and bigoted cabinet choices. We will see if the Republican majority in the U.S. Senate can stomach confirming these picks or if the Democrats have the courage to filibuster them.

As the shock of this election wears off and the anger erupts into mass demonstrations in cities across this nation, some still hold out hope that the Electoral College will come to its senses and switch their votes—a highly unlikely scenario. But if it did happen, it would be an unusual Constitutional challenge in a year of unusual challenges.

Here, in the much bluer part of America 61.6 percent of California voters chose Clinton over Trump. Clinton’s tally was even higher in Los Angeles County with 71.4 percent choosing the former Secretary of State.

Closer to home, Trump only won 6 of the 36 precincts in the majority Republican territory of Palos Verdes Peninsula and one in Long Beach. In the greater San Pedro

On the other hand Hillary picked up the majority of Sanders supporters and agreed to the most progressive Democratic Party platform in history. Imagine taxing the wealthy to pay for public education, using unionized trades to rebuild our roads and bridges and help our environment. Hillary was a vote for progressive issues and I’m very hopeful for the future because if it had not been for our founding slave owning fathers that gave us the anti-democratic Electoral College system it would be Hillary President Elect today as most Americans voted for her, not Trump.

On a recent Sunday morning talk show I heard (House Speaker) Paul Ryan refer to Republicans as “The Party of Lincoln”—and he was serious! This coming after a half-century spanning Nixon’s “Southern Strategy,” Reagan’s “Welfare Queens,” Willie Horton ads and now Donald Trump’s election. The only thing that might top that is Ryan (or Trump) referring to the GOP as “The Party of Eisenhower” and re-warning us about the dangers of the Military Industrial Complex.

For several years, your articles and commentaries have forced me to consider new points and alternate perspectives on very important topics. Although I disagree 100 percent with your perspective on this particular issue, I appreciate you James for the continued effort you and your staff put into bringing us readers great news stories and commentaries that consistently challenge our own perspectives.

As a Veteran, I served my nation to defend the Constitution.

We continued to love having the peahen and her five eggs as long as she wanted or needed to stay. We eventually learned the pattern of her daily routine, could identify her “scream” from others, when she would safely leave her nest for food, while taking that small window of opportunity to be able to peek at her beautiful, perfect eggs resting there. All was good and just in her world, safe in our yard.

When the pace of change exceeds our ability to keep up, and when the world that we know starts to become unfamiliar, we retreat to the comfort of familiar places and rituals. We attempt to recreate memories of happier moments, even if it’s just our vision of the past through rose-tinted glasses. It’s what traditions are made for.

Thirty-one years ago, the business owners on the 1400 block of West 8th Street in San Pedro got together to build a brand new community adventure. They called it Candy Cane Lane. Just about every year since, the eyes of local children have grown big with hypnotic glitter of the free snacks, the face painting, the carnival games and Santa Claus.

Years ago, Matt Lincir, owner of Alvas Music Store, created the large electrically illumintated candy cane decorations that now line the street. Each year his staff hangs them up and plugs them in.

This year’s celebration takes place, from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2, at Weymouth Corners.

Each season, free holiday music, street dancing, carnival games and live entertainment compete for festival-goers’ attention.

In the early days of Candy Cane Lane, wondering eyes could scarcely believe that Santa, with his beard so white, had truly materialized from a store’s roof top in a flurry of artificial snow.

Mona Khalbourji, owner of Mandyz Boutique, a store that sells women’s apparel and accessories, oversees the vendors and games for this annual celebration.

The day San Pedro’s 7th Street Chophouse closed was a sad one for anyone addicted to restaurant’s the innovative menu and live music scene. Executive Chef Chris Sison’s work during his four-year tenure in the kitchen contributed hugely to the memories that people made there.

At the Chophouse, Sison aimed to bring a diverse flair to his menu, which included flatbread, seared ahi tuna, Tex-Mex rolls, spinach dip, chicken, shrimp, carnitas tacos and mini Kobe burgers. And that was just the appetizers menu, Sison grew up in the City of Carson, experiencing a lot of diverse cultures and cuisines. “ I grew up around Japanese folks, Hawaiian, Belizean, Jamaican, Filipino,” he said during a 2013 interview with Random Lengths.

“At the time. I went to a lot of these kids houses and experienced a lot of these cuisines.”

Those influences were apparent in Sison’s menu at the Chophouse. When the restaurant closed in 2013, Sison applied to become a line cook at 555 East American Steakhouse in Long Beach. He wanted to challenge himself. There, under the guidance of Chef Douglas Farnsworth, Sison polished his techniques for preparing swordfish and filet mignon. In time, he was elevated from line cook to executive chef.

The 555 East -- aka as “the fives” -specializes in corn-fed, hand-cut and aged USDA prime steak. It has been serving “the king of beef” to the people of Long Beach for almost two decades. Here’s what Chef Sison has to say about his first month in the kitchen as the

CS: I would serve a medium “bone-in ribeye” and a “loaded baked potato” with cheese, sour cream, butter, bacon and chives to Tom Colicchio of Craft Steakhouse. The reason being is, I really enjoyed his restaurant and would like him to see us do simple done right.

KG: How is 555 involved with the local community?

CS: We are involved in the community by participating in charities. We make donations to schools. We also participated in the Ronald McDonald charity walk recently.

POLA, GE Transportation Partners to Digitize Maritime Shipping

SAN PEDRO—On Nov. 17, the Port of Los Angeles and GE Transportation are announced that they are partnering to pilot a first-of-its-kind port information portal, a unique approach to demonstrate the benefits of digitizing maritime shipping data and making it available to cargo owners and supply chain operators through secure, channeled access. The digital platform will provide stakeholders with greater line-of-sight and planning capabilities to more effectively service ultra-large container vessels. Cargo data used in the two-month pilot project will include filtered information from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Automated Commercial Environment system.

The pilot project will enhance supply chain performance by delivering fast, data-driven insights through a single portal to partners across the supply chain.

Ultimately, the goal of the port information portal is to improve data-flow between cargo owners, shipping lines and other stakeholders so that port and terminal operators have an extended window of time to track inbound cargo to more effectively service vessels, optimize cargo movement and improve the predictability and reliability of the supply chain. Port and cargo stakeholders manually tested this advance exchange of data during the largest-ever container ship call this past December.

A person living with HIV can achieve undetectable levels of the virus after undergoing antiretroviral therapy. The level of viral load is what causes a person to be likely to transmit the disease.

As explained in The Body.com, researchers have found that people who are being treated for HIV and have undetectable viral loads pose a negligible risk of sexual transmission, 0.06 percent, close to zero.

“Once you begin therapy, you stay on therapy, with full virologic suppression you not only have protection from your own HIV … but you also are not capable of transmitting HIV to a sexual partner,” said Dr. Carl Dieffenbach, director of the Division of AIDS, National Institutes of Health in a video. “With successful antiretroviral treatment, that individual is no longer infectious.”

“Undetectable only happens if you know your HIV status, you went to the doctor, you got on meds and you stayed on meds,” Robinson said.

“We have this opportunity to really end this,” Robinson said. “It’s going to take all of us, not just some of us. PrEP is really changing conversations of how we physically love each other…. We don’t live in a bubble. As long as there are trains, planes and automobiles, we are all connected.”

For the month of October, JetBlue conducted four operations after 11:00 pm that resulted in consent decree violations or fines. Each consent decree violation resulted in a fine of $3,000. The next two Consent Decree violations in the 4th quarter would result in $3,000 fines, and the fines would increase to $6,000 for each subsequent Consent Decree violation in the quarter. JetBlue conducted a total of 19 operations in between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm. 18 of these operations qualified as unanticipated delays and the delays were primarily due to mechanical problems with aircraft and poor weather conditions. One operation that was conducted in between 10:00 pm and 11:00 pm that resulted in a $300 violation. JetBlue was fined a total of $12,300 for the month of October.

PrEP is also often used together with other prevention methods to further decrease a person’s risk. These include using condoms, disclosing status to partners, and treatment as prevention or TasP. This means an HIV-positive person who is on HIV treatment is very unlikely to pass the virus onto others because the medications they take greatly reduce the HIV in their bloodstream to extremely low levels.

“It’s a great tool,” Robinson said. “If you are a person who can take pills every day, you don’t have to worry about HIV. Robinson acknowledges there still is much stigma associated with people living with HIV. PrEP conveys that a person taking the prevention tool is not bigoted toward people living with HIV. “It takes HIV out of the conversation but it doesn’t protect against anything else such as gonorrhea,” he said. “Sex is part of the conversation but it shouldn’t be the main part of the conversation.”

Robinson is not just a public health advocate.

He is a patient. The former basic and qualitative scientist is HIV negative and practices safer sex in different ways, among them, using PrEP. “I have known about PrEP well before approval by the FDA in 2012,” Robinson said.

“So I already know that it worked as long as I took it properly. And, it made sense logically for me to easily add it to my healthcare strategy….

My sexual health strategies vary based on the type of sex that I am having. I try to use whatever sexual health prevention tools make sense at the time.”

Robinson said that the vast majority of people who take PrEP, have no side effects.

“It has increased the level of intimacy that I have with other men, while also reducing any anxiety that comes with potentially contracting HIV,” he said.

However, if the drug is not taken as prescribed, PrEP is much less effective. The medication must be taken daily. It takes about seven days of regular use for it to work.

Thus far, only two people using PrEP, have been infected with HIV. But there are many factors that may account for that such as the status of some of their sex partners may not have been undetectable.

A total of 581,808 twenty-foot equivalent units, TEUs moved through docks last month.

Export TEUs were 1.2 percent down, relatively flat compared to the prior October, to 126,770 TEUs. Total imports were 296,711 TEUs, 3.7 percent off.

Empty containers experienced the largest drop of 13.8 percent to 158,327 boxes.

Port officials noted the harbor’s past October was the best in the previous eight years, and came during a string of six consecutive months of cargo growth to end 2015.

A major factor affecting the port’s volume is the Hanjin bankruptcy. In 2015, Hanjin Shipping containers accounted for about12.3 percent of the port’s total containerized volume. Port leaders recently acted to clear a backlog of empty containers related to the Hanjin bankruptcy, freeing a significant number of chassis to speed the efficient flow of cargo through the Southern California supply chain.

For the calendar year through October, port TEUs trail the 2015 total by 4.8 percent.

There were also words of warning from Teamster trucker Eddie Rodriguez, formerly misclassified as an independent owneroperator, whose livelihood was destroyed by CAAP’s clean truck requirements.

“When you adopted the first Clean Truck Program, I was forced to pay out of my own pocket for the new truck,” Rodriguez said. “Even though I worked hard and was considered to be a very ‘successful’ driver— and even though a subsidy was provided— it broke me. It broke my family, and it continues to break the backs of the thousands of misclassified drivers who haul cargo for America’s largest retailers on and off these docks. It’s wrong and it is also illegal for these companies to charge misclassified drivers for the equipment.”

There was a sympathetic response to these objections, most notably from Commissioner Patricia Castellanos, who was involved as a community advocate in the first CAAP. “We need to get input from all stakeholders,” Castellanos said. “I’d rather do it right than do it fast.”

Open Letter to Councilman Joe Buscaino

Dear Joe Buscaino, My name is Craig Shaffer. I’m a registered voter in San Pedro.

I just read Sunday’s L.A. Times about the Sea Breeze development. I just want you to know how disappointed and disgusted I am.

This is just what Donald Trump talks about when he says the system is rigged against the little guy. I don’t have $95 grand to pay to play. So the rich get the sit down and we regular folks are screwed. It’s not the way it’s supposed to work. I’m supposed to matter just as much as Mr. Leung. And Mr. Leung is supposed to play by the same set of rules that I do.

The timeline…..the Dept. of City Planning vetoing it…..the checks in other persons names … $95 grand to you … $60 grand to Garcetti…. It just makes me sick.

I’m done attending meetings (this even makes me want to stop voting)…If the system is rigged why participate.

Look I’m not naïve…. I’ve read about hundreds of politicians getting corrupted by money, it’s just that I thought your law enforcement background might provide more of a moral compass … and yes I expected more.

Editor’s note: In the past few weeks, Random Lengths News received a slew of Letters to the Editor from the students of San Pedro High School English teacher Michael Kurdyla. The students commented on stories ranging from the Harbor Area’s coyote problem to Black Lives Matter that were published in the past few months.

The end result was more than 10,000 words from high school students engaging the most topical issues being discussed in the today. In the interest of space, we organized the letters thematically.

RE: Name Calling

I live in California, more specifically LA and I am constantly seeing the rude action of name calling, At school, the store, on TV, in movies, and in shows, name calling is something everyone seems to do and take part in (bandwagon technique). I also to be honest, take part into this controversy but am determined to have our community as well as myself show more apathy towards one another, in a way where everyone will have freedom without doing damage.

In a recent article, publisher James Preston Allen lets his readers know that the name calling case is usually “when you can’t win on the facts or logic, you call your opponent bad names,” (#1) (name calling).

An example of current name calling is in this year’s presidential election. Little actions like this are what lead to incapable, depressed, and insecure people.

But there are also people who, in some cases deserve their name calling or maybe on occasions the name calling is a joke, either way people take situations the wrong way. An aspect to consider is that being vivacious or patient with others is where your good intentions arise. Name calling isn’t always the solution, there are many alternatives.

There are also other conspiracies that being irrepressible and not falling into juvenile name calling is a good appeal to follow. I personally am constantly seeing name calling on social media as well as

in school. Girls and boys attack one another for pointless drama. Calling each other out for their body shape, acne, beliefs, and other personal fragments. The name calling is already at a point where racist, sexist and homophobic name calling is unhealthy and no one benefits from it.

Name calling has gotten way out of hand and the remaining dignity we have should be used to treat others as we would like to be treated. Name calling isn’t the only solution in an argument and we must notice that violence and negativity aren’t the key.

RE: Coyote Story

I am a resident of the local bay area, and I am concerned about the rise in coyote population. I am disturbed about the fact that the population has risen and has caused deaths of household pets.

As the recent article written by Adriana Catanzarite points out, “... residents complained about coyotes acting aggressively toward children.” and how they have basically taken over the whole south bay. By treating coyotes with aggression there has been a spike in their aggression as well. In Catanzarite’s article, it says how “… lethal targeting does not control coyotes and may even exacerbate the problem.” which is causing our household pets to becoming prisoners in their own

houses. This is why it is crucial that we find a way to bring the population down before something more serious happens.

Now there are people who believe that we shouldn’t kill the native species. Some people think that we can peacefully coexist with them.

As a member of the community and an animal friendly person I think that finding a way to cooperate with the native coyotes and keeping their population at a steady rate would be beneficial to the environment. After all coyotes are responsible for keeping the ecosystem here in balance by keeping the vermin population low.

However, there have been many cases where families have lost beloved pets. Because of this residents are angry with them and want them gone. There is only one beneficial outcome to this choice. That outcome is that there will be no more large animals to eat smaller helpless pets and people would be able to be worry free. Although there is a long list of issues of the ecosystem if they are to be exterminated.

The coyote population has become way too big of an issue to ignore at this point, and it is crucial that we deal with the problem now.

After all, we have a responsibility to keep the earth going and we can’t do that without coyotes by our side.
