Message from the Editor Hey there, I’m Randy G, Marketing Guru & Owner of PowerMouth Entertainment and also the Chief Editor of MouthZoff Magazine. Prior to working in the managerial side of the Music Industry, I was a budding musician, lyricist, composer and songwriter. I’ve sang and written songs both for and with some wonderful singers and musicians. Recently basing myself in Queensland opened me up to a completely new music scene. I became increasingly aware of the positive contribution I could make to local artists and industry and alas PowerMouth Entertainment was born (www.powermouth.com.au). In what seemed like an incredibly short period of time PowerMouth has become a recognizable, well respected name. My professional role is varied, from artist marketing, promotion and management, to booking agent, publicist, /-"+,-0*(-+"&+*-,1-,&,#+(+"2#0*3,-4'*&(5,&*(#6*32-,7*894'*%-&+*'(#6*,:1,-",#4,* has impressed upon me the hardships local artists face regularly in the music arena. Velvet eleven is a blend of Folk/Rock/Roots/ Electronica, the music that is written can be either a collaboration or my own personal works. I like to think that every Velvet 11 production is like a diary entry of what’s going on in my life at the time. Velvet 11 has the ability to be a full band or one man show just all depends what’s happening and where.

Four By Five Quintet Review by Tina Walsh

TINA’S TIP!

Four By Five Quintet performed recently at Y24D)#)Y2(60*(&*(*&,:+,+0*(#6*-(+',-*+'(#*+',"-*9&9(5* jazzy tunes, they funked their set up, with James Pendrith joining them on trumpet. The core of the band is Kat Kellalea on vocals, Jake Bristow on keys, Andrew Fincher on guitar, James Visentin on bass and Michael Clarke on drums. I had caught them perform once before, and enjoyed their jazz stylings. Being a fan of funk, I was in raptures when they stretched their sound into that genre. Especially interesting was the apparent disharmony between trumpet and vocals. Four By Five Quintet performs regularly in Brisbane. More information about the band and upcoming gigs is available on Facebook - https://www.facebook. com/FourByFiveQuintet.

Travelling Producer and Musician Rob Ratten recently performed a unique Support Slot at the Ladi Abundance EP Launch. I caught up with Rob a few days 5(+,-*+2*%#6*29+* a little bit more about his ‘Velvet 11’ Project and his electronica styled music.

So you’ve got a gig, or you’ve been gigging for a while. You’re focused on getting the music right, playing tight and getting the punters interested, and maybe even dancing. There’s a few things that often get forgotten, but make a big difference to your fanbase and band income. 1 - Who are you? I can’t recall the number of gigs that I’ve been at, /',-,*C).,*'(6*+2*522D*91*+',*,.,#+*+2*%#6*29+*+',* name of the musician / band. The average punter may not put in this effort, even if they like what they hear, so you’ve lost them the moment they leave the venue, or you leave the stage. And don’t forget people have short attention spans. I remember something like anything more than 20 minutes and the average person’s concentration has drifted (oh look, what a cute kitty …) This means you need to mention the name of your band *at least* every twenty minutes. Practice a number of ways to share this. At least one way is introducing members of your band. Another is to thank the other bands on the bill, then mention your own band name. Yes another way is to talk about your merch ... 2 - Got merch? Let the punters know ... L,215,*/"55*42#&"6,-*>9?"#$*?29-*NI*O*^L*O*."#?5* if they know it’s available. I’ve had a number of musicians tell me “I don’t feel comfortable selling”. Guess what? Some people will buy your merch because that’s what they do, but plenty of others won’t even think about it unless they are prompted. Try something like “We’re [band name] and if you like what you hear, you can pick up a copy of our NI*(+*+',*3,-4'*6,&D`*&'2956#)+*>,*+22*+29$'*+2*&(?* during your set. Lauren Lucille’s Nina Simone Tribute Show! review by Di Clark photo by Steve Barrett thoroughly and The Nina Simone tribute show with Lauren Lucille and her quartet of accompanists, was a real treat for the ‘packed to the rafters’ audience at the Brisbane Jazz Club. Lauren not only looked the part but sang, pitch perfect, beautiful interpretations of Nina Simone songs.

interspersed between the delivery of 18 of Nina’s songs, gave the audience an interesting incite into the life of the troubled, ultra talented woman.

Lauren opened the evening with the fabulous gb,,5"#)*E226)0*(*3($#"%4,#+0*&295@95* arrangement (don’t even think about the Buble cover). The accompanists, Steve Russell on Piano, Andrew Shaw on Bass, Toby Wren on E9"+(-0*(#6*A(-D*R,#3(#*2#*I-93&0*4*$,55,6* brilliantly together with Lauren to present a well polished performance.

The audience had great fun participating in ‘See-Line Woman’ at the start of the second set which continued through ‘Here Comes The Sun’. The wonderful Gershwin ‘I Loves You Porgy’ was very moving and of course no Nina concert could end without ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ which ‘brought the house down’ to end the fabulous evening. The audience demand of an encore gave a repeat of See-Line Woman to send everyone home on a high.

The well thought out program of Nina Simone songs contained some familiar and not so familiar to deliver an interesting variety of music which complimented the story of Nina’s life. Lauren had researched Nina’s life

There were many ‘First Timers’ at the Jazz Club for the show and thanks to such a wonderful evening there’s a good chance that they will return and become regulars at the 17 MouthZoff Magazine March 2013

TJ admitted that he’d have a narrow range without it, even though he would prefer not to sing falsetto. TJ also shared that he’d prefer to play / record without technology, and described having an 8-piece band perform recently to cover all the sounds on the recent release. The third song “The Hollow” had beautiful, lush vocals and the last song performed “Pick A Piece” had a “singing in the round” sound to the lyrics during the verse, which was amazing. The “What Is Real” Tour kicks off Thursday 25 April at the Hideaway. More info on TJ Quinton online - www.facebook.com/T.J.QuintonMusic www.tjquinton.com.au

What sort of things do you like to write about in your songs? Love lost and found, social commentary, being true to yourself, setting yourself free, spirituality Who writes the songs predominantly? I do (Ladi Abundance) although the amazing band brings them to life

An 8 piece band fusing soul/funk/hip-hop/jazz with three part vocals, horns and tight grooves How do you manage to fund an 8 piece band? A lot of favours and kind musician friends who play for much less than they are worth

However, they have been somewhat absent since November last year, this made tonight even more special. I took a few moments before the gig to speak with Claire. Ladi Abundance Project releases their EP “Slice You Up” at The Joynt review by Tina Walsh Ladi Abundance Project are a large band. In addition to the usual drums, bass and guitar, Ladi Abundance is accompanied by (*1,-49&&"2#"&+0*D,?&*t*+,#2-*&(:*15(?,-0* trumpeter and two back-up singers and the sound they produce is full and funky. They opened their set with the track “Crazy” off the EP. With good grooves, I got my dance on, as did the rest of the room. This led into a new song “Let Me Out” which had a reggae / island / samba vibe, complete with dance moves for the three vocalists and a wicked, albeit short, guitar solo. By the end of the second song, +',*6(#4,*e22-*/(&*+'-2>>"#$7*C#4596"#$*(* cover in their set, Jill Scott’s “One is the magic number” opened with a trumpet solo, and I was particularly impressed with the phrasing of the spoken vocals, as it seemed like it wouldn’t have been easy to lay those down. Slowing things down, they performed another new track “Station”, which was a much more mellow sound. Following that with a track that showed Ladi’s warm, alto voice, featuring a keys solo, and ending with gorgeous a capella vocal harmonies. Samba’ing things up, the horns led the track “Sometimes Girl”. The lyrics in this one resonated with me, the story about a sometimes girl, a side of her who’s in touch with the inner being, rich in wisdom, but not around all the time, and wanting her to be the full-time girl: “I wish her passion, her wisdom, would 22 MouthZoff Magazine March 2013

shine down on me”. I guess we could all do with a little of that. “Rhyme or Reason” was introduced as a celebratory track, and contained some hip-hop vocals, before they launched into another track deep with grooves, “Take Another Trip” from the EP. I noticed during this song I was smiling broadly, so quickly realised this must have been my favourite track so far on the night. The strong horn presence certainly didn’t hurt. The crowd was blessed when Mad Betty joined the stage, with her beautiful full alto voice, to join Ladi on the track “Monster”. Another &(3>(<"#&1"-,6*+-(4D*GN2>/,>&`*4(3,*#,:+* before Ladi invited the chicks from Indigo Rising, and one of the guys from Kryptamistic, who each featured in their own rap solos.
