The Grassy Knoll with Dan Mullin

Thanks to Dave Franks for filling in for me last month….and now a word from our sponsor! Actually… get well wishes for Gary Van Horn and Steve Archer…both had some medical conditions tended to…we wish them a speedy recovery. Both Gary and Steve have been instrumental in the Oregon Region Vintage program. Also I just learned that Tim Stanley had some surgery….Tim get well soon…hope to see you behind the wheel of the Pace Car in the near future. Last month, Dave gave you a rundown on how the Vintage Supps were arrived at, and also listed the go-to people. If you have any questions at all, please call us. The March race we suffered monsoon like weather and a few brave souls came out and swam…I mean raced...thanks for showing up and participating. The April race was a different story...the kind of weather that makes good horsepower and no overheating issues. And as usual, the Vintage community made an

excellent showing with 18 cars signed up for Saturday and 16 for Sunday. The weather was a bit cool on Saturday morning with the temperature down at the freezing mark at 7am. This is the kind of weather that Phil Weaver likes…he drags out hi toaster oven and warms up his spark plugs so he can start the Alfa Alfetta! True story….I stopped by one morning on my way to Tech and Phil was toasting his spark plugs! Hey whatever works! And speaking of Alfa’s, we had 3 on grid and racing…some very nice examples of the marque. In VFS/R…only 2 cars answered the bell for Saturday and Sunday. Apparently Ron Emmerson in his red Super V Ralt had some mechanical woes. But Tom Hendrickson managed to take the top spot by beating out Greg Baldwin in a very pretty Lola Sports Racer. Hey Tom….watch out..cuz when Baldwin gets the teething problems over… you’re gonna have your hands full of Lola! you may want to invest in some new red 200 mph racer tape!

VP-1 class on Saturday and Sunday was won by Dave Sweet in his pretty yellow Sprite and running in second spot was Bill Thew in the crowd pleasing Saab 96. Ever noticed there are never any mosquitoes around when Bill lights off the Saab! VP-2 had the biggest numbers for both days..the 3 Alfa’s, Tim Scott’s factory lightweight Datsun roadster, Doc Duncan and the green RX-7, and of course Hans Gutman and the white Volvo. We’re glad Hans is back, we missed him last season! I can’t forget Russ Watson in a nicely prepared Porsche 914. Russ won Saturday and Doc Nichols was on top on Sunday in a red Alfa. Speaking of red Alfa’s…Bob Macherione was seen practicing his farming techniques on the east end of the track but only gave up a few spots..nice drive! And before I forget, thanks to Ken Garchow for bringing out a very nice BMW M-3. VP-3, the big bore boys (we need a lady out there! Are you reading this Randi Ledbetter?) Norm Daniels in a very nicely turned out Camaro

took the honors both days, with Mike Smith chasing him in the yellow Mustang. And in 3rd spot was Gary Hagstrom in the Plymouth…..welcome Gary..please join us again. Next up on the schedule is the May race weekend..3 days…May 6,7 and 8! This is a Regional National event (Rational—ask Jim Murray). Get your entries in soon and keep the tradition of Vintage alive in Oregon Region. And for those of you taking part in the NorPac Vintage Series…there is the Laguna Vintage Weekend put on by San Francisco Region the end of April, and Memorial Day weekend race at Seattle Raceway put on by Northwest Region. you might also mark your calendar for June…Rose Cup weekend..June 17-19..this will be a party and a show! I expect the Grassy Knoll to be full of beautiful Vintage racers. These last 3 events are all part of the NorPac Series. If you’re wandering around the paddock and curious about the Vintage cars, don’t hesitate to stop and ask questions…who knows… someone might even cook you up some brats!

will be happening about the time you read this. May is “no chicane” in honor of Frank McKinnon, who is the lead advocate of running straight through. (Frank, in case you don’t know, is “trophy guy” for us and does a great job; see April’s trophies!) Because May’s the third National race we’ll be running this year, it has to run a different course than the July double; that’s why it’s “no chicane.” Give us your feedback on this one, too.

April was the first of our “new format” weekends, with Regional races both Saturday and Sunday, preceded by slightly lengthened qualifying sessions. Our mantra: “more racing; more bang for the buck.” The initial feedback from this format has been very good; really, we’ve heard no negative comments. But you, and you, if you have negative comments, let’s hear them. It’s parallel to the “chicane/no chicane” question. Some like it this way, some like it that way; we try to cut the baby in half and please everyone. But I digress.

May is a Regional/Rational race weekend. The “Rational” idea is new; we’ve talked We are grateful for the about it in this space earlier. Regional points; for $100 (payable before turning a wheel on track for the weekend, see Karen McCoy only), that driver can earn Regional points as well. The reason this costs a premium is that there’s extra work involved to score the “Rational” this way, and it’s an opportunity that’s worth quite a bit, like a second entry on the weekend. Ask Karen for details on this one. And no, you in the back, Karen doesn’t get to keep the money. We made a late schedule change for May which separated the Group 4 drivers from Group 2 for the race weekend, due to concerns about the speed differential on the “no chicane” course. We did place the Group 4 cars with Group 5 on the Sunday, for the Regional qualifying and race. This is a new thing for the Group 5 cars, to have other company, and if this is the last column you read from this corner it’s because the Group 5 guys lynched me. with Andrew Howe In spite of the weather, the Solo season is off to a decent start. We've had two events in the North Paddock which were reasonably well attended in spite of the weather. Drivers are knocking the cobwebs off and we're starting to see who is where after the long cold winter. So far, attendance is up ever so slightly over the last couple seasons in spite of the weather and the cold weather. Now that the season is here we can see who is driving what and in what class. The most popular class so far this season is Street Tire. Street Tire is an indexed class where cars from different classes compete against each other - but all are on true street tires. The times are adjusted by the PAX/RTP index which strives to level the raw times and show who put in the best effort. While the index is imprecise at best (crude and controversial at worst) it does give a means to compare a Mazda Miata and a Porsche Cayman S. Street Tire has had 11 entries in each of the first two events. And, while I admit to being a one-timer in the class at Event #2, there is a strong group of drivers

The battle up front is a 1977 RX-3 against a 2004 Mazda 3. Rotors vs. pistons. Carbs vs. injection. ABS vs. non. Front drive vs. rear drive. MAy 2011

Rallying with Chris & Kristen

Spring has finally arrived, and all our rally plans are in full swing. Let’s take a look at what we’ve already done before we dive into what’s up next. Our April RallyCross was on the 17th—right between the April 15 sort-of tax deadline and the April 18 we-really-mean-it tax deadline. We had a decent turnout, and the short but technical course laid out by ORG Prez and SCCA RallyCross safety steward Dylan Hooker was a big hit.

Overall, with the nice sunshine/intermittent clouds, short course and decent turnout we were able to stay on time to our posted schedule, for the first time in a long time. And, refreshingly compared to last month, we were able to clean up and be on the road for home by 4:30pm. The next RallyCross is scheduled for Mother’s Day, and there is some discussion about moving it to May 22 if the Fairgrounds will let us have that date.

As always, competitors will need to tech first. Keep an eye on the Oregon Rally Group website for up-to-date info, as well as the Oregon Region SCCA page, our Facebook page, and the ORG-L yahoogroups list.

A couple of questions came up at the last RallyCross that I’d like to address here. Per SCCA’s rules, all competitors must be licensed drivers. A person with a learner’s permit cannot compete, even

And finally—alcohol is NOT PERMITTED anywhere at our RallyCross events. This means that if your friends are hanging out watching you and enjoying adult beverages, you could be disciplined. Please leave the adult drinks at home; if you just cannot wait to crack into one, you may find yourself disqualified for the season. We’re all adults here, so let’s act like it.

We had done some work on the field to rehab the mess left after the March RallyCross, so most of the big holes and berms were more or less fixed. However, we still had issues with large pools of standing water and persistent mud. The course seemed to dry out and tack up just enough over the course of the day to afford most people the chance to make it through without getting stuck. However, some people cannot be taught and our resident sweep Mike Shade had to go pull people off the field.

don’t have to try to decipher everyone’s handwriting. Please make sure you have your driver’s license with you when you come to registration.

Our Road Rally chairpeople are hard at work planning some great events for the summer, so stay tuned for more information there.

Regardless, the classes will be reversed from the April event, with AWD running in the morning and 2WD running in the afternoon. Morning registration and tech runs from 8:00AM to 9:00AM, and afternoon registration runs from 12:00pm to 1:00pm.

with a licensed driver as a ride-along. With our new registration software, we are scanning driver’s licenses and printing out score cards for all competitors—this makes it easier for the scores to accumulate correctly throughout the season, and makes it easier on timing and scoring as they

And lastly, our big stage rally event, Oregon Trail, is on the horizon for May 13-15. While not an SCCA event, there are a lot of SCCA-people involved—ORG treasurer Mark Tabor will be competing with past president Ben Bradley in the silly seat; I’ll also be competing, with my Mom as my navigator (who better?).

Dylan Hooker is the event’s Chief of Controls (basically, he’s in charge of making sure all the stages are set up and read to rock (we don’t say roll)). Chris Hale will be manning Net Control (aka Mountain Top, in charge of all communications involved with the rally), and his parents Randy and Gloria will be running the service check-in and check-out time controls. Many people are involved in organizing this event, and a lot of them are SCCA members or involved with SCCA somehow. If you’d like to volunteer, send an email to volunteers@oregonrally.com, or contact me and I’ll send your info to the people who need it. The first day of competition happens out at PIR on Friday, May 13; you’ve seen the road racers kick it around the track, now come out and see how the rally people do it!

As I enter into another year of cooking, I just want to remind you, we need sponsorship for our evening meals at the track. Most of the meals I make from scratch at home and bring to the track. Also in the mornings I bring in doughnuts for our volunteers. The morning doughnuts runs around $50.00 or so depending the time of year and whether it is a two or three day event. Each race cost a different amount to put on the meal. My menus are set for the year and I am getting ready for three of our biggest races. Which reminds me, I also need helpers to set up and prepare some of the food at the track. If you are interested in helping out, contact me at maswanson1@aol.com. At every event we also have a donation jar that is always hungry! ----------------------Editor's Note: Sponsorships still available for individual classes, events and series, along with post-race BBQs. Margie has completed the menu options for the season. She has attempted to contact the person who agreed to consult on the BBQ issue to no avail. She and Mary will contact him again so that this project can move forward if the BOD agrees to its $. COMMITTEE & OFFICIALS REPORTS REGIONAL OFFICE REPORT Karen worked 91.5 hours in January. Received a donation from Carl Clinton of two printers/scanners; Mary needed one for the Secretary position, so this worked out great. Thank you, Carl! Sunoco is again providing a $3,000 sponsorship for 2011 and 2012!

Andrew and Jim have decided to rotate submitting articles monthly. Randy gave Andrew reports showing the LP costs and status. He also gave the 20th of each month as a concrete deadline for each issue. DIRECTOR'S REPORTS SOLO II – George passed out flyer cards listing the Solo II events for this season. RALLY – Chris reported the following from the Rally Group: The Rally X series is all set for the season and all but one will be held at the WA. County Fairgrounds. These are all listed on the web site. The Road Not Taken will be held in Sept. This is a TSD all niter event. There will be a stage rally in May. Rally will join with Road Race in August with a special feature.

DIRECTOR I – Kim has reserved The Airport Shilo once again for the annual banquet. The date is Nov. 19th. Karen has sent the deposit per Kim's request. DIRECTOR II – Peggy is starting the search for awards and would appreciate any input. ROAD RACE – In Jim's absence, Andrew read his e-mailed report below: We changed the 2011 schedule to eliminate the October weekend and change September to a 3-day event. Based on last year, it seemed better to try for one successful weekend, instead of two marginal ones. The September weekend is the 9, 10, and 11; so before the Runoffs; last minute tuning allowed. We'll see how that works. PIR and Pro Drive have adjusted accordingly. Sunoco is on board again for a $3,000 sponsorship which we plan to administer as last year, with drawings to award the cash to drivers. Karen did a great job in "decorating" the office for the Sunoco rep. Andrew and Todd Butler attended as well; after this meeting we discussed and decided on the schedule change above. We held our Chiefs' meeting Saturday, Feb 5 and discussed numerous operating items. Notably, we are scheduling future meetings about the Rose Cup weekend, and the ORP weekend. Specifically, Rose Cup wants to run out of the South Paddock, which causes some operating difficulties. We need to figure out what we can reasonably do, and how. My next meeting with Rose Cup committee is March 8; at that time is a chance to bring some of these concerns to the fore. On ORP, we plan to meet in early June to address ways to make that operation work. Bob Smethers has suggested we rent the bunkhouse at ORP for the workers ($350); this is one of the budget items we need to plan for.

We will be developing a budget for the ORP weekend to bring to the Board; at this time ORP is not reflected in our 2011 budget. The Chiefs' meeting was a very lively and productive discussion; we outlined the season schedule, discussed operational changes involving pre-grid, timing and scoring, and tech siting; also creating award ceremonies. We also discussed using 5-minute splits between run groups, vs. 10-minute splits. Overall, the talks were helpful for everyone to understand my goals and efforts to improve the "product" for the drivers, while maintaining operating efficiency and schedules. It's helpful to have everyone in the room for the discussion, so each can understand the others' needs. We met for 2.5 hours. Thanks to Bob Smethers and Karen for their valuable support at the meeting. It was well-attended. PAST REGIONAL EXEC Absent ASST REGIONAL EXEC – Dan mentioned that due to budget constraints Vintage would forego presenting flags and trophies this year. REGIONAL EXEC Andrew requested that he be made aware of what the cost would be to continue the awarding of Vintage flags etc. Region dues were on the agenda and after much discussion it was decided that they will remain at the current cost for the time being. This issue may be reviewed later. A three person committee to review the region books will include, Rick Moore of Solo and Carrie Sutherland. Adjourn M/S (George/Kim) M/P Respectfully submitted Mary Thompson
