effective way to commute to work. I remember waiting excitedly for my dad to come home so that I could capture his arrival. Afterwards, I would beg him to drive the Mini around the block. After weeks of incessant begging, my dad caved and allowed me to personally commandeer this little car around our neighborhood. I was hooked! Years later, I found a 1967 Austin 850 at the 1988 All British Field Meet and convinced my family that this little Old English White Mini would be a perfect vehicle to get me to school and back while studying Photography & Television Production.

Hello Mini Fans, It’s that time of the year to reflect on our successes while looking at what we can improve moving into 2022. I’ve been a documentary storyteller for as long as I’ve been a Mini Fanatic. At a very young age, my father allowed me to use his 8mm film camera, and around this same time, back in the seventies, my father purchased a Mini 850 as he was seeking a more cost4

They approved. Over the years, I’ve worked hard to connect the dots with automotive and filmmaking. Using what I learned from school, I filmed a series of documentary videos for mail-order VHS sales at the 1995 Mini Meet West at the Mountain, 1996 MMW in Long Beach, and 1997 MMW in Vallejo, California. (Stay tuned. I need to dig into my archives and share these videos on YouTube soon) Since 2000 I’ve covered events for National Automotive Car Expert Nik Miles and produced a series of videos to get the JET Motors YouTube channel off the ground. Meeting and inter-

viewing Paddy Hopkirk is one of my highlights. That meeting would have never happened if it was not for Norm Nelson, leader of Shasta Minis, who was integral to that connection. Today I’m happy to call Norm and Paddy my Friend. I’ve discovered that Paddy has an immense love of the British car industry. Even in his retirement, he works hard to make sure the world knows about how much fun you can have in a MINI Cooper. My latest endeavor when not at Hybrid Moon launching brand potential for the most innovative companies in the universe, is to help tell the stories of the Mini community via my latest partnership with Miniology.com. Miniology started in 2003 to deliver news and information about the Mini/ MINI, explicitly geared towards clubs, their events, and the people, created for and by enthusiasts. Miniology, a non-profit and charitable organization, consists of dedicated volunteers who collaborate on websites, blogs, podcasts, social media, or other content. Please take a moment, visit and Subscribe to Miniology on Facebook and YouTube for the latest Mini Cooper News, Live Streams, Podcasts, and Magazine.

Heather and I had a great time this year at the 2021 Velocity Invitational held in Laguna Seca. We were joined by OMS members Randy & Julia Unsbee, Wryan & Mallory Van Ripper, Jeremy & Deb Thorpe. It was a thrill to see one of our own, Randy Unsbee tearing up the track during the Minis vs. Mustangs races that were held on Friday and Sunday. Next month’s issue will feature his article about Minis vs. Mustang, a modern-day story of David and Goliath. In the meantime, head over to Miniology.com to see driver interviews and complete event coverage. We all look forward to what 2022 has in store for us. See you at an OMS event soon! Cheers, Eric Newland Oregon Mini Society El Presidente

Jet Motors in Happy Valley Oregon once again hosted one of OMS’ favorite activities, the annual BBQ which this year featured a catered Taco Feed. An overflowing parking lot of classic and new Minis made for an unforgettable experience, and just one more of many events provided to OMS membership every year, even in the midst of a pandemic.

Jeremy and Deb Thorpe outdid themselves with the BBQ and Taco Feed, after the club missing the 2020 event due to COVID. It was great to get together once again with old and news friends, and some new cars in the club!

In 2020 a group of Mini enthusiasts from Oregon, Washington and Idaho made a run to McCall, Idaho and had such a great time it was decided to try for a more formal event the following year. To acknowledge and pay respect to the various “Minis In the Park” events that are held throughout the UK and the “Mini Meets” in the US that were cancelled, the name “Mini Meet In the Park” was the theme. The historic town of Roseberry, close by McCall and just outside of Donnelly, was selected for it’s beautiful buildings and views. Although a smaller turnout, the September event was nevertheless a wonderful success thanks to great people and the camaraderie that develops from a smaller group. New friends were made as people from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California all attended.

Andy Biddle took home the “Best in Show” award with his beautiful Mini Pickup while Don Dixon’s long-running, all original classic Saloon took the “People’s Choice” award. Due to the success of the show, a similar event is already being planned for 2022 with an earlier date (May) to try and avoid the seemingly inevitable forest fire smoke as well as make it easier to attend Mini Meet West which will be held in July. A special thank you to A-Series NW, Hagerty and the Seattle Area Mini Owners Association for helping make this event happen”

OMS Membership Update By Karen McCune

Time to Renew! Membership Holiday Updates! As 2021 draws to a close, we are happy to welcome two new members: David Bloomfield and Amber Kline, Portland, OR. 2015 Mini Cooper Countryman. David is an avid fisherman who would love to drive his Mini to Mexico and fish along the entire West Coast. C

Derek Dunstone, Vancouver, WA. 2008 Mini Hatchback and 2013 Mini JCW GP Race Modified. His GP modified is his fun car but Minny, his 2008, is nightfire red with a white top and holds a special place for him. His son changed out the motor and the clutch so she holds a special place with him as he drives her around.
