Biomimicry universal wide span design is inspired by shark skin and related research. The form of such structure is designed to enhance wind flow and accelerate wind speed through turbines integrated into the top of the trusses. 4

Under viscous flow conditions, the ribbed surface appears as a smooth surface located at a virtual origin. For cross-flow on the ribs, the virtual origin is closer to the rib tips. The difference between these two heights, ^h (protrusion height difference). The existence of this difference has interesting consequences: if a flow motion is generated by a fluid lump in a plane at a height y+ above the surface, the fluid lump experiences greater resistance if it moves laterally than if it moves longitudinally. In this way the cross-flow is hampered by the ribs, as desired, and thus ribs do indeed reduce momentum transfer and shear stress. Therefore, for an optimization of the shear stress reduction, we have to select a ribbed surface which exhibits a maximum difference of the virtual origins for longitudinal and cross-flow. * 6

The height to length ratio (H:L) is key factor to wind acceleration cross building. Wind speed accelerates both along (X direction) and across (Y direction) the building while the H:L ratio increases from 1:10 to 2:10. It decreases, however, when such ratio increases from 2:10 to 4:10. the most ideal wind acceleration happens when the H:L ratio is 3:10. This ratio will be applied to Shark Skin Biomimicry Wide Span.

Biomimicry universal high rise design is inspired by shark skin and related research. The form of such structure is designed to enhance wind flow and accelerate wind speed through turbines integrated into the building. 22

23

IMPACT OF BUILDING SHAPE ON WIND ACCELERATION In mimicry of Shark Skin, the building plan profile takes the longitudinal section of single shark fin and mirrors it into a closed, air foil shape. Such shape is duplicated and reflected along axis to enhance wind flow. The exterior facade takes the catenary form of shark fin cross section. The width of building footprint and distance between two towers are tested for gaining maximum wind velocity.

It would warm up the room, then ascends and escapes to the atrium. The closed up double skin facade would act as a buffer zone at the same time. 31

FIELD HOUSE Chicago, IL 36

The design intention of this field house is to create service in an under-served community for under-served people. Chicago public data combined with parametric tool is utilized to find desired community and facilitate such design. 37

Park Density

Population Density

Density of Kid & Elderly

Community Selection Heat Map Field houses are aimed to provide facilities for Chicago citizens to better enjoy the park. However, not all the communities have such facility. Some of the communities have higher density of population which makes such demand even stronger. Elderly and kids, who spend more time at home, need to have a place to bond with other people to have more group activities. This project aims at finding out those communities and creates a facility to serve. When making selection of parks, the priority of selection criteria is set as Park > Population Density > Density of Kid and Elderly.

Two old trees are guarding the door to the park. These trees will be preserved. Other small trees, however, are subject to change.

There are three baseball diamonds on site, each with only two temperary observation decks.

40

The residential blocks have created a uniform and steady rhythm of urban fabric. Such rhythm shall be preserved.

The school on site is having an additional construction. However, a gym is not included in the program.

Limit the exposure of the field house while creating interesting space inside. On the outside, however, the field house maintains the simple appearance that goes with the surrounding urban fabric and does not disturb the peace in the neighborhood.

To make the the space more fun, the reading room is terraced to offer both reading surface and circulation space while breaking the visual barrier between programs. The height difference gives the interior a sense of tree house which is more inviting to children. 41
