Micro-library of Low-Income People Autonomous Learning Space Design

Location: Korakati, India Date: 11/2020-12/2020 Instructor: Lu Fan Academic, Individual Work
I consider architecture to be a container of life. Many stories have taken place in buildings every day. Therefore, when a building is built, it will have an impact on the people around it, the environment, and even people's minds. To be an architect, what we should do is to be adept in finding these possible effects, and make them possible through architectural design. In this portfolio, I focus on specific groups. They are often discriminated against or ignored by others. I want to find a way to change their terrible position. In my work “From Past to the Future”, I focus on the LGBTQ+ group. This museum which is to memory the victims of a nightclub shooting in Orlando pays tribute to everyone involved and attracts and educates visitors from around the globe. It will let more people know about this group and eliminate discrimination. In the work “Micro-library of Low-Income People”, I pay more attention to the low- income people in remote Indian villages. This project provides space for residents and makes education possible.
03
In addition, I pay much attention to the reuse of inactive space. The site of my work “Onward Kids, To the River” , is located on the bank of the Ganges which is a deserted reclamation area. Therefore, we introduce kids’ playing space on this site. Through this architecture, we hope to provide suitable outdoor activities for local children and stimulate the vitality of the area. Besides, the work “ Human Reproduction Incubator Experiment” is a building experiment based on a fictional background. It uses fictional stories to tell about the building's positive impact on the surrounding old town.
04
As time passes, the architectural functions of a place become mentioned increasingly less, but the influence of architecture on people will always be there. This is also what I think the charm of architecture is.

01 The Future of the New York Stock Exchange Stock Exchange Museum Design
Location: New York City, NY Date: 9/2021-12/2021 Instructor: Hyojin Kwon Academic, Cooperative Work, with Jiahui Shi The fact that Manhattan has served as the receptor of global capital has maintained its status as a global leader. Now the city is exhausted with an oversupply of new condominiums. With its financial leadership being challenged by other cities including London, Dubai, Hong Kong and Tokyo, the project will explore how New York will respond to this challenge. One of the central questions concerning the project will be what should the 21st century Stock Exchange, moving beyond the free plan of the Beaux Arts era? The Future stock exchange will be expanded to mine Ethereum NFT’s for New York City and serve as a Crypto Currency Exchange for global trades. To educate the public about the value of the purchase of NFT’s an NFT Museum will be incorporated in the building proposal. Given the lack of public space in New York City, the overall logic is to try to create public spaces in the building. We use the big grids as the background and carve voids to create public spaces, making these spaces into floating volumes embedded in the grids. The shape of these volumes is determined by their functions.

Offices are located inside the building. Each of the different functional areas has its own of fice. These of fices are accessed through two cores.
Museums The museum area is divided into multiple volumes connected by circulations and cores. These volumes surround the building allowing visitors to view the entire building from all sides.
Circulations These circulations are mainly used to connect museums and cores. The different directionality from other volumes allows them to reduce the monotony of the building.
Cores There are two cores in the building. One is accessed from the ground floor of the original building and the other is accessed from the roof of the original building.

Physical Model SITE SITUATION We used the 3D printer to make the physical model. Our design is characterized by variety of frame forms, so the different densities, directions , and thicknesses of the frame will affect the overall effect. Due to the limited accuracy of the 3D printers, we needed to print and tested the frames many times when making the physical model, so that they can not break and can produce a transparent effect.

I love this book!
I think I find a good place to study.
I know the answer to this question!

I will study here again.
India's education sector is unique among underdeveloped countries. India is a country of more than a billion people, but its state form is viewed by many as China going back 10-30 years. It is interesting to note that India has a large number of CEOs in many multinational companies, which is a testament to the nation's pre-eminence and the quality of higher education resources that nurture the elite. At the same time, the country is underdeveloped and divided between rich and poor. At the top of the class, people have the best access to education. At the bottom, primary education is far from universal. Everyone going to primary school is just a dream in India. The dropout rate for Indian remains high at 48%. At a time when educational resources in some Indian villages are so scarce that some children have never had access to the Internet and have to travel long distances to get to school. In this context, a micro-library can provide educational resources for the community to some extent.

The number of schools in the Ka area is small and inaccessible to many people. At the same time, residents have poor economic conditions, and their children often drop out of school because they cannot afford the tuition fees. In this case, the school cannot meet the learning requirements of most children. The micro-library used in the project can solve these problems well. Because of the convenience and adaptability of the micro-library, it can be installed in every village and beside the main road. As a result, more people can go to study places and study more conveniently. Village

The stairs take on the vertical traffic function of the micro-library. The external staircases make the building look very light. The roof platform provides users with spacious outdoor space, where they can carr y out collective outdoor activities.
The facade adopts the design method of virtual and real combination, which is realized through the combination of wooden walls and French windows. Most of the facades facing the street use French windows, which enables passers-by to see the learning scene inside.
Structural Framing
External Walls The exterior walls are made of wood. India is rich in timber resources, so the wood price is low, which is suitable for rural buildings.

03 Fragments Possibilities Residential Design
Location: Rosario, Argentina Date: 03/2022-05/2022 Instructor: Florencia Pita Academic, Cooperative Work, with Dongjun Wang The concept of the Fragments Possibilities project is transforming the smallest architectural element -- brick into various functions. For example, this project transformed bricks into structures, apertures, balconies, seats, planters, and landscape patterns. In addition, the project creates different connections between each architectural element, like floors and brick walls, walls and columns, building and landscapes. As a result, the buildings' pieces are "knitted" to each other.

Site Analysis SITE SITUATION
The site is located in the Rosario, Aegentina. The intervention area is located in the South District of the city of Rosario, at the mouth of the Saladillo stream, constituting a riverside scenario that, as part of the ecosystem of the Paraná delta wetland, has the particularity of being the the only point in the city in need of evacuating families due to the flooding of this main watercourse, the Paraná River. These are families that have occupied sites near the banks of the watercourse as a result of lifestyles strongly linked to fishing and the river.
Fragment Design--Bricks SITE SITUATION
In the first chapter, we focused on the bricks. We collected a large number of precedents of bricks of different shapes, materials and colors, and based on this, we designed bricks with potential for development. These Bricks will be cast in silicon mold, with a range of materials.

Wall Design--Patterns At the stage of wall design, we used the selected bricks to combine to form different patterns. These textures have different details, and they carry all the conceptual qualities of the project. In our design, we designed 6 different textures that collage each other to form the wall. The point of the collage process is to consider the connections between the different patterns.

Corner Design SITE SITUATION
This stage is for the corner design of a two-story house, which requires the combination and development of the wall designed in the previous step. At this stage, we have two design priorities. The first is to design the joint of two walls, that is, how different patterns interweave and combine in three dimensions. The second is how to extend the brick into the interior, so that the brick not only acts as an element of the facade but becomes an element of the whole building.

The last part of this project is tower design. This tower creates different connections between each architectural element, like floors and brick walls, walls and columns, building and landscapes. As a result, the buildings' pieces are 'knitted' to each other. The building contains three communal spaces. There is a gym, a communal kitchen, an outdoor barbeque space on the second floor; a small vegetable garden on the sixth floor; and a large roof garden. Each room inside this building has its characteristics. Therefore, there are various types of life inside this building.

Production of Bricks The physical model contains 8500 bricks. These bricks made opacity contrast, for example, transparent, translucent, and opaque. We used two methods to make the bricks: casting and 3D printing. 1) Casting These bricks were cast with resin and different gradient colors of mica powder. Since the resin needs 24 hours to dry, this method is suitable for mass production of bricks with simple shape.

1) 3D Printing Compared with casting, 3D printers are more accurate. However, due to material limitations, this method can only print bricks of certain colors. Therefore, we use this method to print more complex white bricks.
Model Production In the frame production of the physical model, we used 3d printing and laser cutting, which allowed different materials to be distinguished. Laser cutting is used to make most of the floor slabs.

04 Clay Extruding Barrel Vault Robotic Fabrication Design
Location: Philadelphia, PA Date: 05/2022-08/2022 Instructor: Na Wei Academic, Cooperative Work, with Yefan Zhi The shape of these volumes is determined by their functions. After Richmond generating station ceased operation in 1985, it has been abandoned until now. Without working functions, it still demonstrates the unique aesthetic and cultural trends of that era for industrial architecture. Our concept for the design is to create a memorial space inside the giant turbine hall, a tomb for a past era. In today's world where clean energy is widely used, we hope our design triggers thoughts over our energy consumption and industrial architecture.

Simple Contour Printing The experience begined with simple contouring approaches which are common in the field right now (b1, b2, b3). We also tested changing the Z-axis orientation of the extruding nozzle (b4) to create better curved wall finishing. The test was aborted due to the risk brought to the robot (b5) and the little effect it added to the print.

To produce alternative aesthetics, we explored transfering FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printing techniques to clay extrusion. With appropriate cap, infill and support (c1, c2, c3, c4), we were able to move forward from cylinder-like ceramics to real 3D printed ceramics. We also managed to improve our print quality through minor adjustments (c5, c6). However, the limited amount of clay made us cancel this proposal.

05 Human Reproduction Incubator Experiment Experimental Design of Human Living Space
Location: Tianjin, China Date: 09/2020-11/2020 Tutor: Zemin Wang Academic, Individual Work Human beings never stop exploring themselves, but no alternative experiment can fully simulate the growth and development of the human body. Until, one day, a laboratory announced the establishment of a "Human Reproduction Incubator" to conduct more efficient research and decided to open it to the public. The subject will no longer reproduce through the mother, and the building will serve as an incubator to provide all physiological needs for the internal subjects. The researchers located the incubator in an old part of Tianjin, where people live a nine-to-five life. The familiar street did not tempt them to stop until they saw the brochure for the experiment, which read: "The subject grows three times as fast as the ordinary person. You can observe the process of human growth into old age." People began to watch the internal broadcast through the led screen on the outside of the building and use the mobile app to observe the subject in real-time. The Incubator became a popular punching place, and everything started to change here...

Story Highlights Glowing Zone Experimental Observation Room External Observation Area Recessionary Zone
The subjects were born and died inside the building, and until the age of 20 (60 for a normal person), they were provided with a perfect life in the building's growing zone. Each nest is inhabited by one subject. The walls of the nest room are mostly frosted and breathable, solid but soft to the touch. The exterior wall is embedded with a one-way mirror, through which people can observe the subjects closely, but the experimenter will not be aware of the presence of people. In order to maintain the dynamic balance of life within the Incubator, the subjects are transported from the growing area to the recessionary zone by the age of 20. When someone in the growing zone has a reactionary idea against the eternal perfection of life the whole incubator gives him, he will be transported to the recessionary zone ahead of time. Relatively speaking, growing zone is more popular in this building. The ideal growth zone provided without conditions is the utopia of many minds. Sometimes people look at the subject and imagine what they would be like if they were him. As a result, growing areas are full of daydreamers. Most people observe in growing zone, but few stay in the recessionary zone for long periods of time. Because people generally don't like to experience aging and death in advance. Empty recessionary zone offers space for vendors, who set up weekend markets on undulating surfaces. Every weekend, vendors and customers talk about goods, yet no one notices the aging experimenter inside the building.

After this act of terrorism that affected LGBTQ+ people, the Orlando community, and people around the world came together to prove that " we will not let hate win." Influenced by them, I tried to focus on the everyday experiences of victims, survivors, and first responders in this project, rather than the tragic events. This site will be a tribute to all those affected. It will educate visitors from all around the world and catalyze for positive change.

It is anticipated that the Survivors Walk will connect the Pulse nightclub site to the Orlando Health Memorial Paver Garden, adjacent to Lake Beauty. Aspects of the Survivors Walk will extend further north to end at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, which will continue to tell the Pulse story and have a positive urban impact. Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts must be understood as a continuation of this project, past the firehouse, Lake Beauty, and Orlando Health. This represents a continuation of the journey from hate to remembrance and hope. Besides, the Highway I-4 exit is considered as an outer boundary of the project. 58

SITE SITUATION
I choose to accept and embrace ever y moment, even though I have already known the journey and the destination.
You are there while I am here over the sea. Missing you in my way, that is all I am going to say.
I try to understand you, like reading a dif ficult book. Sometimes I think you a r e i n n o c e n t , eve n m o r e frequently, I think you are mysterious.
I seek your footprints hidden in the fallen leaves. You tell me about your past by your smile and your song.
I have a thousand shadows, but none of them is real. The real me in the world is illusory, which is made by a thousand shadows.
If you do not leave, you will sit with me. I will neither comfort you nor speak until the seasons are lonely.
There is a constant number of secrets for everyone in the world. If I give you mine, I give myself to you.
The raindrops in my hands have kissed your face. I cross time to participate every time you pass.
I hope there will be heavy rain, because I have an umbrella. If so,I can ask you if you want to come with me.
When you can not see me, look up at the sky. Our hearts are together at that time, b e c au s e t h e s k i e s of t h e world are connected.
T he r iver c an wash away dust, leaves and plankton. However, the river of time can not wash away my missing.
The world used to be a steep mountain with a colorless sea to me.After meeting you,the mountain is no longer steep and the sea is boundless.
Sometimes I can not speak. Just like this moment, I am standing in front of you and looking into your eyes.
I came when I was young and left when I was old. I am not willing to forget you so I can only keep looking for you.
You are just a stranger I met on the streetbut I remembered your appearance suddenly. I am looking forward to seeing you again but it is impossible.
Others define the night by the moon, but you know it is none of our business. You are the source of all my light in every night.
I look at him as if looking a t y e s t e r d a y, t o d a y, a n d tomorrow. I have never heard his name, but I know he is looking at me quietly.
I miss spring very much and I want to kiss spring again. Now change spring to your name and read again.
I write down the words slowly and send them to god. I hope he will tell you how much i love you.
I want to turn ever ything I encounter into a story about you. O n a c l oudl e s s day, telling this story to the sun, the stars, and the moon.

The more difficult roads often have the most beautiful scener y. Be grateful for your experiences, no matter how tough.
It can collapse or be silent. But it will never go out and it will always be bright. It is the light in my heart forever

Like the meeting of the seagulls and the waves we meet and come near. The seagulls fly off, the waves roll away and we depart.
You go out of my sight but never get out of my thoughts of you. That torn voice is your silent call.

Like sunlight, sunset, we appear, we disappear. We are so important to someone, but we are just passing through.
Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone. Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived. Live the present moment, make it beautiful.
