Woman’s Club holds Decorating Showcase CHIPLEY — The Woman’s Club of Chipley will present their annual Kirby Holt Decorating Showcase at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at the Washington County Agriculture Center in Chipley. Suspect charged with stealing police car

BONIFAY — After an extensive statewide search by police, Tiffany Roxann Buryn of Hartford, Ala., was arrested in the Bethlehem area on Tuesday night after she reportedly stole the Slocomb Chief of Police’s unmarked TIFFANY R. 2012 Dodge BURYN Challenger. According to the police, the police car was stolen during a traffic stop. It was during the course of the traffic stop that Buryn was able to slip the cuffs underneath her, free herself from the backseat and drive off with the police car, which belonged to Police Chief Don White, according to the report. Geneva County sheriff ’s deputies pursued the stolen vehicle west on State Road 52, but due to the rate of speed the deputies were unable to keep up.

Annual state event held in Chipley this weekend Special to the News CHIPLEY — The UF/IFAS Beekeeping Field Day and Tradeshow is today, Nov. 2, the final day of the 93rd annual Florida State Beekeepers Association Meeting, being held this weekend at the Washington County Agricultural Center. This tradeshow provides educational opportunities through hands-on activities
and interaction with expert beekeepers. Saturday’s Beekeeping Field Day and Trade Show will have Beekeeping Updates by UF IFAS bee expert Dr. Jamie Ellis as well as cooking with honey demos, Q&A Session with Bee Inspectors, hive demonstrations and a beehive smoker contest. Eleven vendors from the Beekeeping Industry will be set up for the benefit of attendees. Available throughout the events will be door prizes, goodie bags and refreshments. The cost for the Field Day alone is $15. Keynote Speakers and notable attendees at the
three-day convention included State Representative Marti Coley and State Senator Greg Evers, 2013 Florida Honey Queen Susannah, Washington County Commissioner Chairman Alan Bush and Chipley Mayor Linda Cain. The organizations responsible for implementing these events include the Central Panhandle Beekeepers Association, Chipola Beekeepers Association, Tupelo Beekeepers Association, Washington and Jackson County Tourist Development Councils, and the UF/IFAS Extension Panhandle Agriculture Team.

Two public defenders promoted Special to the News Fourteenth Judicial Circuit Public Defender Herman D. Laramore announced this week the promotion of two employees. The Fourteenth Judicial Circuit includes Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson and Washington counties. Promoted were Henry Mark Sims and Kimberly Jewell. Sims, an assistant public defender, who has been in charge of the Calhoun County Branch Office, has been promoted to deputy public defender. That position was formerly held by Walter B. Smith, who resigned in July 2011 to pursue the private practice of law. Like Smith, Sims specializes in handling capital murder cases circuit wide. He will continue to manage the Calhoun County Office while also handling all felony cases in that county. Sims earned his associate’s degree from Chipola College, his

bachelor’s degree in Economics from Florida State University and his law degree from the University of Miami. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1995. He began his legal career as an assistant state attorney for the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit in 1995 and had risen to managing the State Attorney General’s office for Jackson and Calhoun counties before leaving that office to become an assistant public defender under Laramore in January 2009.
He has over 18 years experience in the criminal justice system both in prosecution and defense roles. Jewell has been promoted to chief of the Capital Division of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit. Jewell mainly serves in the Bay County Branch of the Public Defender’s office, but is now in charge of the office’s Capital Division, handling capital murder cases in all six counties along with Sims. Jewell graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor’s degree in Information Processing Systems, then earned her law degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1999. She served as assistant public defender in the Twelfth Judicial Circuit in Sarasota from 2000 to 2003 before coming to work in the Felony Division of Bay County in the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit in 2003. Jewell has trained in defense of capital cases with former Deputy Public Defender Walter Smith.

In addition, the Town of Wausau is required to develop a plan to assist displaced persons. First Federal Bank of Florida acquires Bank of Jackson County Special to the News
GRACEVILLE — First Federal Bank of Florida announced the purchase of certain assets and assumption of certain liabilities of Bank of Jackson County in Graceville. This transaction closed on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The terms of the transaction will be released at a future date. “We welcome the customers of Bank of Jackson County to the First Federal Bank of Florida family,” said Keith C. Leibfried, president and CEO of First Federal Bank. “Recognizing the importance of ensuring a smooth transition, we have deployed FFBF associates to the former Bank of Jackson County branches to assist in the resolution process.” First Federal Bank of Florida acquired all deposits of Bank of Jackson County through a purchase and assumption agreement with the FDIC. As a result of the transaction, First Federal Bank of Florida acquired substantially all of the assets and liabilities, including all insured and uninsured deposit accounts and all loans of Bank of Jackson County. Until notified otherwise, customers should continue to make payments as they have in the past. The branches will reopen on Thursday, Oct. 31, as First Federal Bank of Florida branches. Temporary transition hours for the lobbies and drive thru will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “We are proud of our small town, north Florida roots and have worked hard to earn our customers’ and employees’ trust and offer them exceptional financial services and opportunities,” Leibfried said. “We are being deliberate in our acquisition and transition. When baggage becomes a burden Manners vary from one generation to the next. Some of the manners I was raised with are considered outdated, and justifiably so. For instance, I was taught to curtsy to adults and my “social betters.” Today, I don’t care who you are, I’m not curtsying. It looks goofy, and I’m sure it didn’t look any less so when I was forced to do it as a kid. But, old fogy that I am, I can still become SHANNON mildly alarmed by SEYLER certain breaches of Faithfully Yours manners. When I was young, it would have been absolutely unthinkable for children to address adults by their first names. Today, some children are permitted to address even school teachers by their first names. Likewise, my husband shudders when strangers, particularly customer service personnel, address him by his given name. The only first name they need to know is “Mister.” Another violation of etiquette involves the American flag. In my youth, when the flag was presented, hats were removed and hands placed over hearts. As a kid, if I didn’t remove my hat on my own, the hat (if not also my head) would’ve been promptly knocked off. These days, people often watch the flag pass by in parades while keeping their hats on their heads and hands firmly glued in their pockets. But times have changed, and so have manners. It’s only natural. If you think old folks bemoaning the manners of younger generations is new, there are records of similar

When pondering customs, manners and traditions, the key consideration is whether they add anything important to one’s life. A surprising number of them don’t. There’s a difference between meaningful traditions and useless baggage. Don’t impose useless baggage on future generations. That includes spiritual baggage. Religious rituals and customs are important, but can also impede spiritual progress if taken to extremes. There’s a church that refuses to offer gluten-free communion wafers to congregants with severe wheat allergies. The church simply won’t bend the rules. That’s not tradition, it’s idiocy. “We’ve always done it that way” is the most patently absurd business
model in human history, whether advocated by a corporation or a religion. I belong to some lodges that observe complex rituals. The rituals can be quite lovely, at least until someone halts the proceedings for half an hour to argue over whether someone should’ve stepped to the left or to the right. Quibbling over technicalities does nothing to advance the goals of a group. This is similarly true in religious settings. Pointless arguments don’t equal progress. What traditions do you observe? Do they add meaning to your life, or are they mere baggage? Lugging around unnecessary weight is counterproductive, whether physically, psychologically or spiritually. Determine what baggage you’re carrying, and unload it. Afterward, your life — and your spiritual journey — will become far lighter.
