BONIFAY — Making a difference through volunteering was the main point made by two representatives from Emerald Coast Hospice on Wednesday. The hospice recently opened a location at 1330 South Boulevard in Chipley. Emerald Coast Hospice employees Margo Lamb with volunteer services and Community Liaison Cecily Smith, spoke to the Bonifay Kiwanis Club in effort to educate the public on hospice and to find volunteers for the organization. Smith opened by talking about their newest location at 1330 South Boulevard in Chipley. “We did that because we had such a need for patient care on this side (of the hospice’s service area) and it was growing,� said Smith. “We actually have more patients on this side than on the Marianna side — that should tell you how many people need hospice services in this area.� She said there is a common misconception when it comes to hospice care. “Most people think that when you’ve got hospice care that you’re going to pass away or die right away and that’s just not the case most of the time,� she said. “Hospice care is for those with a life-limiting illness. You do have to have a physician’s order to be under hospice, but not to be referred.� Anyone could be referred, she said, and it doesn’t just include cancer patients, it also covers Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Renal Disease and Alzheimer’s was a few examples she gave. “The Memory Care Program is an excellent program for those who have Alzheimer’s but it’s also good for the caregivers as well because a lot of the caregivers are the ones that are suffering,� said Smith.

The Vernon City Council approved changing the Enterprise Zone during their Sept. 23 meeting, and Everett is working with engineer Garrett Martin of Atkins, an engineering firm located in Chipley, to create maps of the two Enterprise Zones. DeRuntz said he was concerned about including the east side of Highway 79 north of Vernon in the Enterprise Zone, since that area is a flood plain. Commissioner David Morris agreed.
“The highway expansion is taking away a lot of their town,” DeRuntz said. “This can be a chance for Vernon to redefine themselves and reshape that community.” DeRuntz said the expansion of the zone down Moss Hill Road was a response to past proposals for development in that area. “I think this could really help Vernon in the future,” DeRuntz said. The commissioners also were given a copy of a Jackson County cell tower ordinance to study. “Commissioner (Lynn) Gothard
had brought this up as a concern with our last applicant for a telecommunications variance,” DeRuntz said, referring to a cash bond the county required of the developer as a guarantee against the tower being abandoned. “This Jackson County ordinance is much more thorough than what we have,” DeRuntz said. “We might want to look at more of this.” The Jackson County ordiance requires a $10,000 bond be put up prior to the issuance of any
permit for a new cell tower as a hedge against “any and all losses, damages and claims arising out of the placement, maintaining, the removal or deconstruction of any tower found to have been abandoned.” “I think this is what she was wanting us to have,” DeRuntz said of the Jackson County ordinance’s provision. Commissioner James Ussery asked if there were any abandoned cell towers in Washington County. DeRuntz said there were not.

sundowners.” She explained that “sundowners” refers to those suffering with Alzheimer’s who stay up during the night. “We do provide 24-hour care, 365 days out of the year and a referral doesn’t have to come from a physician, it can come from a member of the community,” said Smith. “And the thing is to get in there as soon as possible and not be only days away from dying. The preferred amount of time is within six months to a year to be able to get in and educate the family.” She said they not only provide nursing care but they also provide social workers who can handle wills and psycho-social issues, as well as chaplains and volunteers. Smith then introduced Lamb to explain about the volunteer program. “One of the things that got me so interested in this position, besides the fact that I have a health care background, is that I volunteered when I first got here just to get in touch with the surrounding community,” said Lamb. “It’s a great way to reach out to the community and make a difference and that’s probably the biggest reason why people come forward to volunteer. A good portion of our volunteers are folks who have had an experience with
hospice, whether it be with our hospice or with another hospice company.” She said there are many different levels of volunteering available to choose from. “The most obvious is being with the patient,” she said. “Patient care services is where you would go into the home or into the nursing home or in the hospital and sit with that patient and offer them companionship, emotional support and friendship. It’s amazing how much they will tell a volunteer versus a nurse or a doctor or a family member.” Sometimes they will be afraid to share certain things with their loved ones, said Smith. “Patient Care Services is a great way to step in and help,” she said. “Another service provided through Patient Care Services is caregiver relief. Those caregivers need to be able to get out of the home themselves and go to doctor’s appointments, hair appointments, drive their other family members other places.” That’s where the volunteer comes in and sits with the patient while the caregiver leaves. “There are certain things that a caregiver cannot do such as lifting, feeding and administering medication,” she said. “We also make sure that before

Another aspect of volunteering is bereavement, that’s after a family member has gone through hospice services and has passed away. We keep a family in our services for 13 months where the family can continue to receive services to cope with the loss of their loved one.” Smith said there are also gatherings where grieving families can get together, eat and connect with other grieving families. “It’s very therapeutic,” she said. “It helps them to be able to open up and to talk about it. Another volunteer aspect is clerical and administrative, if you know of anyone who is looking to get out of the home and work a couple hours a month, they can come into the Chipley or Marianna office and work side by side in
the office.” There are also event volunteers that help out with events such as the Northwest Florida Championship Rodeo, Sunland Festival and Marianna Arts Festival. “We also have volunteers that go out to a patient’s home and do yard work, move couches, move furniture around to bring in a hospital bed,” said Smith. “The other aspect to volunteering is just giving back to your community and being there to make a difference and if anyone is interested in volunteering I’d love to meet with you and sit down. Vernon FFA Chapter receives grant from National FFA Special to the News INDIANAPOLIS — The Vernon FFA chapter in Vernon, Florida, has been awarded a $2000 grant from the National FFA Organization’s Living to Serve: Environmental Grant program. The chapter has developed a yearlong service-learning project to meet local environmental needs. The “Living to Serve: Environmental Grants” are provided through funding from corporate sponsors CSX and the Donaldson Foundation as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The Vernon FFA Chapter project includes plans to clean up several miles of Holmes Creek and to educate the youth of the community about the impacts of pollution on our natural resources and also their roles in conservation. Holmes Creek is the favorite recreation for most of the youth in and around the town of Vernon. Hundreds of boaters, fishermen, canoe/kayak users, and swimmers from all the surrounding areas fill the creek each year. Unfortunately, along with the recreational use of the creek comes pollution, including soda and beer cans, glass bottles, disposable baby diapers, cigarette butts, fish bait containers, Styrofoam cups, and all manner of debris. This pollution is harming fish and other marine life. Broken glass and sharp metal have
caused injuries to humans. Another huge impact has been the unsightly mess and sometimes unsanitary areas especially on the creek and near the swimming holes and boat landings. The FFA members will be coordinating a spring cleanup of several sections of the creek over several miles. The students will snorkel the creek between landings and load the trash on boats. Debris will be removed from the creek and also along the banks. The students will also create visual and narrative stories about the creek, the wildlife, and the pollution and present these at all three of the local schools and other community groups. Through this project, the Vernon FFA hopes not only to help preserve this creek for future generations, but also to expand the ideas of conservation and stewardship of the environment through education. Community support will be welcomed. The project illustrates the final line of the FFA motto, which is Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve, by encouraging FFA members to unite in service within their communities. The Living to Serve: Environmental Grants take community service one step further to service-learning, which provides a meaningful way to apply leadership and education skills learned in school and FFA. PDL sets Veterans Day Program PONCE DE LEON — Ponce de Leon Elementary and High Schools will be coming together to pay a special tribute to our American Veterans at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, in Ponce de Leon High School’s gymnasium. The schools have planned a patriotic program to honor those brave men and women who have served our country so well through the years. Privacy: A spiritual issue News of widespread privacy invasion is emerging daily. From eavesdropping on foreign dignitaries to the interception of our own personal communications, privacy seems to be a thing of the past. Surveillance isn’t merely about espionage between political powers anymore. The government has, for quite some time, been behaving like a creepy stalker and listening in on private conversations. It’s as if some perverse lunatic were constantly peeping through our windows, SHANNON except that now we’re SEYLER paying that lunatic Faithfully Yours with our tax dollars. The old cop-out, “If you don’t have anything to hide, then you’ve got nothing to worry about” is ridiculous. Citizens have plenty to be concerned about. The collection and monitoring of private communications is unethical. But I don’t need to tell you that, since you’re a person of conscience who’d prefer not to live in a police state. Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower, gets a lot of press these days, but he’s hardly the only whistleblower out there. Governmental and corporate snooping on law-abiding citizens may be at an all-time high, but so is the rising tide of informants alerting the public to these detestable practices. Amid this torrent of alarming revelations, one thing is clear: citizens are fed up with being monitored for no good reason. People are taking to the streets in protest, beefing up their online security, demanding a stop to wiretapping, disconnecting from invasive social media and otherwise attempting to protect their rights. Naturally, all of that activity is being monitored, too, but people are finally

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a pioneer in digital rights, has successfully pursued lawsuits on behalf of individuals and groups facing unauthorized surveillance and other breaches of privacy and liberty. EFF also stands against abuses of copyright and patent laws. Whether working to repeal bad laws or educate the public about techniques for fighting back against those who would curtail their rights, EFF has been exposing would-be eavesdroppers, privacy violators and unfair legislation since 1990. Simple. Privacy is a human rights issue, and hence, a spiritual issue. Religion and ethics are intertwined. The invasion of privacy is unethical, and many religious people are speaking out against it. Virtually all religions teach us to treat others with compassion, fairness and mercy. That’s why religious groups often unite with secular organizations in the struggle for freedom and human rights. Although some religions officially maintain an apolitical stance, they don’t (or certainly shouldn’t) divorce themselves from ethical concerns. The First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles filed a lawsuit (First Unitarian v. NSA) in reaction to being monitored by the government. They’re not alone. The Shalom Center, a Jewish organization, did likewise. It is not only private

citizens who are being spied on, but businesses, schools and even religious groups. While military personnel are credited with protecting our freedoms, let’s not forget activists on the home front — including religious individuals and organizations — with the nerve and decency to stand up for what’s right. Very few religions urge their adherents to ignore injustice. In fact, name such a sorry institution, and I’ll add it to my list of organizations to openly reject. Even if privacy isn’t an issue you find compelling, there’s bound to be another cause that moves you. You can speak out against human trafficking, oppression, poverty, censorship and abuse. If you can’t be bothered to defend intellectual rights, you can still help others. Just do something. And say something, too. Don’t remain silent when you see injustice. Your conscience and beliefs have given you a strong voice. Now it’s time to start using it.
