Victory Square - REclaim a public plaza Vinnytsia - Ukraine
TYPE OF WORK
Create a comfortable pedestrian square and reclaim the urban center of Zamostia district.
DURATION
Summer 2019
THEMATICS
Urban plaza / accessibility / identity
EXPERTISE
Public space, parking lots, playground, bike path, public monument / modular territory
AREA Local TEAM
Kotsiuba + Shovk Studio
The territory of Victory Square is a noisy urban intersection located at the center of Zamostia district. Approximately equidistant from the train station and the river Bug, this plaza does not have the scale and reach of such a central location. The ovale design proposal, in addition of giving a centrality and unify the territory, is a recall to the natural and unreachable island in the middle of the river. The vegetation of the square is indeed a reference to this wilderness as well as a continuition and harmonization of existing green structures. The concept is then to re-unite dismantled sidewalks and monofunctionnal areas in a safe and comfortable territory for all users. The central road is erased, territory is fully pedestrian and incorporates a bike lane. Preserving a large central place, the projects aims to stay open for any kind of public activities or gatherings. It connects the functions of these two main buildings, Jubilee and House of Officer, (dance school and theater) and gives a place for its users to circulate, wait, play, relax.

Gamma factory was processing radioelectronic elements until 1991. The territory now stands as a fallow field with abandonned buildings and chaotic parking. Recently, a consortium of private investors developped a complex of housing, offices, cultural and social infrastructures. The outside territory should remain suitable for large event and manifestations while offering confortable and quiet spaces. Observing this dense wasteland in an industrial ground we suggested the idea of a transversal large vegetation cut. spreading down the plaza. A large space will transform the actual parking in a modular open territory keeping all the existing trees. On the upper plaza, the dense vegetation is preserved in two dense and wild areas. The underground citerns are transformed into decorative and recreative spot, while a large playground is designed. The project integrates some old factory garages revisited into modules for different purposes, games library, temporary exhibition, workshop or cafés.

The Roshen logistic center of Vinnytsia should include a 24h working territory for international truck drivers. A multifonctionnal office infrastructures, a warehouse, on 5 hectares of land with high ground water level. The project orientates towards a large park on the southern side. Levelled using excavated ground, the park integrates vegetated hills and water basins for phyto-epuration of rainwater from the overall territory. This park is partly open and integrated in the cycling network of Vinnytsia in the context of the restoration of Bug’s riverbanks. The plant selection is inspired by the local meadow atmosphere and uses vegetals selected for phyto-restoration qualities. The parking area integrates rainwater management solutions, porous surfaces , landscaped ditches and vegetalized roofs.

Research and implementation - Green streets In 2013 / 2014, the city council of Paris led researches and experimentations for the vegetalization of calm streets of the capital in order to obtain quieter environments, a better quality of life for inhabitants and to enhance ecological corridors. The researches focused on elaborating a convention for those streets, inventoring the potential ones, protocols of vegetalizations, on site experimentations (furnitures, pavement modifications), communication and implication of inhabitants.

DESIGN - Prony square - 17th district of Paris The design of Prony square aims to offer an area free of cars and motorcycles parked all over the area. A work on the texture of surfacing helps to give a visual effect differing from the street. It slows the circulation of vehicles and gives priority to pedestrians and bike users. The low vegetation and planting of alignment trees maintain the lisibility of the site while giving users an enjoyable location to wait the bus, have a quick lunch or just pass by.

Geomorphological formation of the bay
The Baie d’Authie is a bay in perpetual movement, highly prone to suffer from rising waters and sea submersion. In a particularily intricate context with many different actors we chose to transform constraints in territorial opportunities. This work was a way to transform perspectives on sea-submersion; accepting rising waters could create new lanscape experiences and opportunities for agriculture and territory. A seawall located behind the sea line becomes support for different uses, and offer another way to discover the Bay.

Fossil dune - Restoration and renaturation of a transborder natural territory On this dune located few kilometers from the sea on the French-Belgium border, the landscape analysis focused on enhancing the potential and unique landscape atmosphere of this site. It consisted in an improvement of the pedestrian scheme and on a revalorization of its transborder character with grazing areas.
Salines de Fort-Mardyck - Opening of an industrial wasteland Former industrial wasteland of 110 hectares situated at the border between metallurgical installations and residential neighborhoods. As the site has never been open to the public, the analysis focused on a public sheme taking into account the constraints linked to soil pollution. The site tends to be depreciated by locals and administratives for its location near steel plants. The study of the site on a territorial scale helps highlight the interest of opening it up to the public, thus becoming relevant with the surrounding natural areas.

Calais jungle - Restoration and renaturation of the site The surrounding of Calais were a place of migration for more than 15 years. Until November 2016, more than 10 000 people were living on a land called the Jungle of Calais. After the dismantling, the project rapidly oriented towards a natural reclamation of the site. Levelling and cleaning work started in november to create ponds and dunes, an environment favorable for birds and biodiversity; as well as to avoid new settlements. The second stage of the projects consists in creating a public scheme around the site, in connexion with surroundings natural areas and with the sea. The construction of belvedere for bird watching and on the top of blockhaus will participate to the enhancement of the site for visitors. Nevertheless, this project is for me a great tabula rasa of what happened there, litterally, the soil being ripped of any traces of migrants, and looking forward to be given back to its pionneer species and migrating birds (!). Pushed by administrative bodies to show that the site is rapidly taken care of, this project remains to me highly controversial and resonates critically in my landscape architect morality.

The city of Irkutsk is congested by multiple bus services, tram, trolleybus and cars which make everyday shift and tourist journey to Baikal an intense and harsh experiment. The project focuses on Angara River as an opportunity to re-think the transportation network and to develop substainable ways of transportation (boat, park and ride systems, ice skating). With hubs located along the river and public transport lines organised toward the river, this scheme aims to lower the density of traffic in the historical center as well as to lower and simplify time spent in transports. Embankments are improved for users, tram and car lines are reorganised to leave more place for pedestrians and bikes. A better place is also given to vegetation to improve quality of spaces for leisures and everyday life.

AREA Local - Podil district TEAM Podil postmodern + Podolianochka
Podil is a disctrict located on the riverbanks of Dniepro river in Kyiv. Industrial neighboorhood, the district is an harmonious patchwork of pre-revolution buildings, Stalinist dwellings and is particularily remarkable for its socialo-modernist planning based on a regular squared structure with open center courtyards. Some of them contain architectural excentricity for the period. Here a kiosk (gazebo) in bricks with wooden details in the centre of the square had become a a spot for drinkers. Neighbors, annoyed by these activities, destryed the place with a bulldozer, briding communal workers. Hence thinking they would destroy the behaviors associated with this place. We conducted online social surveys and on site discussions to understand what this vandalist act meant and what were exactly the expectations and desires of locals. Later on, we organized an event to clean the territory and experiment light and temporary installations. We are now planning a third event of collective design and re-creation of the territory.

In western Ukraine, Lviv is an historical city with a center classified at Unesco World Heritage. All accross the city, the river Poltva flows undercover. Its 15km galleries, used as hiding spot during the war, form a invisible labyrinth, a missing voice to the historical heritage of Lviv, shut down since 1870. In collaboration with Theater Leci in Lviv, we organized a collective and transdisciplinary workshop between comedians of the theater, urbanists and architects of the city. We shared their approaches and sensitivities to convoque perceptions and imaginations of this hidden missing river. Through exploratory walks, in situ performances, mind mapps and collective creation, the workshop participates in the overall reflexion and projects around the valorization of this river.

Mining process at the scale of Murmansk oblast.
In Northern Russia, Nikel, mono-industrial city of 12 000 inhabitants is one example in many of the paradoxical and dramatic situation of mono-industrial cities in Russia and generally in post-soviet states. From 1945 onwards under the Soviet regime, the city was organized and maintained following the logic of a utopic and productivist plan. This fast economic growth was enhanced by a galvanization of the exploitation of resources and by the idea of mankind winning the struggle against nature However after the collapse of USSR, the ecological damage became obvious and the decay tainting the Soviet utopia marked a turning point. Fifty years from now, resources will be drained and this monotown will sooner or later be deserted by industry and by its inhabitants Regarding city’s past objectives, present, and future, we react as disorientated in mind and spaces as we reach this point of non-return, where degradation, pollution and ruins lead the way. On one side a depressing feeling that urges to escape and an endearing and appealing sentiment on the other side, reinforced by the specific Arctic nature and weather. On the soil, stigmata of this exploitation depict a dark picture, sulfur dioxide oats over the city and the borders. Acidic unfertile soils, skin and pulmonary diseases are the results. In consciousness as in spaces, the nickel is more than a material, it is a system This work retraces the evolution of this territory and its paradoxes. A chronology of despair questioning post-industrial Nikel, a penultimate landscape.

Independant research
Murmansk Oblast, Yamal, Polar Ural
After the first field trip to Nikel in 2016, I became quite obsessed with this territory and all the extremes it was conveying. Heavy pollution, polar nights, industries, abandonment, soviet planification. I continued my researches and quests independantly from 2017 with a long winter field trip through territories of Murmansk Oblast, Polar Ural and Yamal Peninsula. This researches follow my diploma work. Through photography, writing and video, I interrogate and explore this harsh environment and all his paradoxes; how people live there, the urbanism and specific landscape, the industries and the indigeneous communities.
