KOLLECTIV about the work[s]
A R T I S T V O L . 1 . 2 This issue connects the photographer with the artist. Kollectiv vol.1.2 demonstrates the artists creative processs and development of work that has been inspired by the visual content made by the designer and the experience documented by the Photographer. This symbiotic relationship allows Kollective magazine to become more than eye candy or a blog feed...design becomes all encompasing and builds a bridge between space and culture. The work that is producted by the Artist pays homage to their heritage and identity. PHOTOGRAPHER| DESIGNER | ARTIST all roles are played by Raquel Kalil | RSK di Studio.
La Tierra de mi Madre Drawing upon the memories of my cross country, La Tierra de mi Madre celebrates the legend(s) of the land my mother and abuelo grew up in. Using Kollectiv Vol 1 as a mnemonic device, this issue presents a body of work that responds to the photographers travels from 2010. The artwork examines the fragility of drawing from memory. The photos are only observed for 10 minutes before the mark making begins.
In 2010, my Abuelo passed away. His garden died with him. In an effort to recall some of the sacred spaces he and I shared, I am recalling upon a landscape of solace, legend and emotion. After some time, my mother and I ventured by car through Central America, visiting various coffee lands and churches from which we paid homage to our beloved. Throughout the development of this body of work, I paint the landscape as if it here a sacred, spiritual space; which for me, it is. Life embraces the sea of green while death tucks into the shadows, only to blossom as life once again.

In this first series, I focus on the reproduction of derelict architecture from La Antigua, Guatemala. Celebrating their survival from a devastating earthquake in the 18th c, the depiction of this sacred space is a personal and intimate experience between stone and sky. Because the architecture exists in ruin, this series gives the viewer an impression of what once was, what used to be, and what still breathes reverence.

Las Ruinas de la Catedral 2014 acrylic and chalk on Paper 30in. x 50in.
As a child, my mother would take my brother and I to El Salvador to visit family. One of the most memorable places we frequented was a pueblo called Alegría. Nearly two miles from this humble home nests a mysterious and fortunately extinct volcano, Tecapa. It’s crater, also known as La Laguna de Alegría, is recognized for its emerald colour and regarded as a gem of America. According to legend, there is a siren who lives in the crater and lures young men into a watery grave.
