Life in the Square: This German city is unique in that its urban infrastructure is laid out in a grid. In the summer of 2009 and 2010, I lived in this textural garden of concrete, grass, coffee and steel.

STUDENT CULTURE A SLICE OF UNIVERSITY LIFE During the summers of 2009, 2010, students from the University of Florida traveled across the atlantic in hopes of refining their german language skills. Each class was just as the program was prescribed: INTENSE. But between the all the Deutschkurs and tedious Praktikums, we were able to appreciate the simple things that made the ausland a kind of new heimat‌

It is safe to say that once class ended, our exhausted eyes immediately woke up to the smell of coffee and the taste of a cold sweaty beer. Mannheim, our city, was/is a dynamic city. Never, was there such a place with so many colors and textures all within walking distance.

From collective kitchen meals, to coffee runs, afternoon study sessions, beers, pretzels and the ever favorite fresh market; our education went beyond the classroom‌

Back home fresh produce was a scavenger hunt and an event in and of itself. I loved being able to wander into the Square after class to grab a basket of berries. Sometimes my awestruck self would get lost in the moment and i’d end up taking a ‘wrong’ turn: i would end up in a speakeasy or a czech owned bar.

No matter the space, Mannheim always provided something fresh for the senses. The great thing about living abroad is that the city invites you to explore and appreciate all scales of a dynamic life. -daily notes from Mannheim

HEIDELBERG

In less than one hour, we make a romantic getaway and journey through this Baroque style old town. From the Philospher’s Walk we orient our attention to bikes, rooftops, beer and castles...

A ruin must be

rightly situated, to be effective. This one could not have been better placed. It stands upon a commanding elevation, it is buried in green woods, there is no level ground about it, but, on the contrary, there are wooded terraces upon terraces, and one looks down through shining leaves into profound chasms and abysses where twilight reigns and the sun cannot intrude. Nature knows how to garnish a ruin to get the best effect. One of these old towers is split down the middle, and one half has tumbled aside. It tumbled in such a way as to establish itself in a picturesque attitude. Then all it lacked was a fitting drapery, and Nature has

furnished that; she has robed the rugged mass in flowers and verdure, and made it a charm to the eye. The standing half exposes its arched and cavernous rooms to you, like open, toothless mouths; there, too, the vines and flowers have done their work of grace. The rear portion of the tower has not been neglected, either, but is clothed with a clinging garment of polished ivy which hides the wounds and stains of time. Even the top is not left bare, but is crowned with a flourishing group of trees & shrubs. Misfortune has done for this old tower what it has done for the human character sometimes – improved it. -MARK TWAIN

STUTTGART

The capital of Baden-Württemberg, the sixth largest city in Germany, the ‘cradle of hte automobile,’ Stuttgart is more than a city, it is a place of innovation

DAS DOPPELHAUS Le Corbusier

& Pierre Jeanneret 1927

During the late 1920’s, seventeen European Architects contributed 21 house prototypes for the Weissenhof-Siedlung in Stuttgart. These 21 prototypes were built for exhibition in 1927. The completion of this estate allowed patrons to experience a new vision of society. Today, they are recognised as the International Style models for Modern Archtitecture. In partnership with Pierre Jeanneret, Le Corbusier executed one of his earliest manifestations of his FIVE POINTS OF ARCHITECTURE. The image on the left, is an example of Le Corbusier’s contribution to the Wohnung exhibition. Le Corbusier envisioned an architecture that was designed with the same precision and logic of automobiles and airplanes...here are but a few photographic exmaples of his earliest execution of a machine for living:

FIVE POINTS OF ARCHITECTURE: 1. Support of ground-level supports elevating the building from the ground: an extended continuity of the garden beneath 2. Functional roof: a garden|reclaiming nature occupied by the building 3. Free floor plan: add walls only where aesthetically needed 4. Long horizontal windows = illumination and ventilation 5. Freely-designed facades = a skin of the wall

86

87

A key innovation of the DOPPELHAUS was the transformable open living space that could be subdivided into multiple sleeping compartments with sliding partitions; similarly, beds would slide out of large built-in closets.
