Favorite

Every year ahead of the holidays, my family and I resolve to go lean—buy functional gifts, give each other experiences, or give nothing at all except for love and togetherness. None of us ever follows through, of course. Not because we’re rabid consumers, but simply that it’s fun to find interesting gifts for those closest to you. It’s the thought behind the gift that counts, not the lavishness of it. When I was a kid, I hated having to go find things for everyone on my list. Now I love it, because there are so many beautiful, elegant, rare things out there for gifting. Here’s my list of worthy goodies for this year.

AGONIST No. 10 White Oud Eau de Parfum Perfect for cooler weather, this new release from Swedish perfumer AGONIST blends the darkness of oud with the pure white of three different musks. With notes of lily of the valley, violet, tonka, and amber, it’s velvety and cocooning while energetic. $195 at Uncommon Finds.

Grey New York Grey New England Leather Tote Sometimes, especially amid the trendiness of logomania, it’s refreshing to invest in a true staple. This tote from Grey New York Grey New England is simple, sturdy, and sized for work days in the city. It’s crafted in Italy from thick pebbled calfskin. $695 at Barneys.

Kaweco AL Sport Rose Gold Fountain Pen Didn’t you know? Handwriting and snail-mail are back. This German-made fountain pen is retro and elegant in rose gold aluminum, and is small enough to fit in a purse. $81 at The Paper Seahorse.

Italian Cashmere Knit Beanie I visited Plain Goods in New Preston, CT last year, and fell in love with its just-right curation of upscale casual wares. Available in Navy, Tobacco, Oatmeal, and Gray.

Golden Goose Deluxe Brand Superstar Sneakers Are they pricey? yes. Cute as can be? Yup. I saw these in person at Golden Goose’s brand new San Francisco outpost and was wishing I had a toddler to accessorize for the ultimate play date! Made in Italy. $270 at Golden Goose Deluxe Brand.

Giving Back

T

he holiday season isn’t about getting presents, it’s about doing good by helping others and giving back to your community. Here are a few ways to do just that this holiday season. Take a minute or an hour or maybe even a day and try to do one, a few or maybe even all of these. Included is a list of our favorite foundations. You might make someone’s day a little brighter or even change a life. Don’t forget, helping others should be an everyday occurrence.

Volunteer at a shelter

Whether it be an animal shelter or at a homeless shelter helping those in need, just be there to offer a hand and keep the less fortunate out of the cold.

Charity Run/Walk

Various holiday-themed races are taking place all over the world in order to raise funds for those in need. Help them out and get in your steps for the month.

Fur Babies

Donate a bag of food to an animal shelter. Dog food can get expensive, specially for shelters where they have lots of animals. Head to the pet store and drop off the goodies for the fur babies.

Run a drive for blankets, boots and coats

In some parts of the world, winters are know for their bitter cold and extreme snowfall.

Offer to babysit (NO CHARGE)

By the third day of winter break, parents are exhausted and ready for a break themselves. Babysitting can get expensive, offer to watch someone’s kids so they can get a night out.

Reach Out WorldWide (ROWW)

Reach Out WorldWide (ROWW) is a registered nonprofit founded by Paul Walker. In January of 2010, after a massive earthquake devastated Haiti, Paul spontaneously organized a relief team that responded to the disaster. On the trip, Paul saw a gap between the availability of skilled resources and the requirement for such personnel in post-disaster situations. Upon returning from Haiti, ROWW was established with the purpose of fulfilling this unmet need. ROWW deploys teams to assist with post-disaster clean up. They clear access ways, remove dangerous trees, muck and gut homes, and assist in clean-up efforts. ROWW operates on the philosophy that by making a difference in just one person’s life, the world has been changed for the better. By doing so, we strive to elevate the simple idea of helping others to create a lasting legacy to be proud of and will be forever felt worldwide. roww.org

The Global Footprint Network is a relatively new environmental organization, founded in 2003, but they have obtained an impressive number of international awards for their work. Their mission is to help companies, governments and individuals make wiser, more sustainable ecological decisions by offering actionable insights into natural resource management, resource consumption and capacity. Since its inception, the Global Footprint Network has collaborated with 50 nations, 30 cities and 70 global partners to help balance their ecology. Transforming humanity’s trajectory is more pressing than ever. A sustainable path is the only viable way forward. We must stop stealing our future resources to fuel our economy’s obsession with unsustainable growth. Global Footprint Network’s ambition is clear. They want to make Earth Overshoot Day history. We are determined to accelerate humanity’s shared desire to #MoveTheDate of overshoot and exit the erosive ecological pyramid scheme that our economies are running with the planet. J/P HRO

In January 2010, shortly after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, Sean Penn established the J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO). Initially an emergency relief organization, it now continues to help vulnerable communities rebuild their lives in healthier and safer neighborhoods through access to quality education, health services, improved housing and infrastructure, and livelihoods. Ensuring access to basic services that should be every human being’s basic right. Everyone deserves medical care, housing, education, jobs and job training. We must listen closely and respond quickly to the needs of those we work with. Most of all, it means allowing Haitians and others to shape our mission instead of the other way around. rescue.org Rare Luxury Living 183

RARE AFFAIRS

Gävle Goat, Sweden

Since 1966, a 13-metre-tall Yule Goat has been built in the center of Gävle’s Castle Square for the Advent, but this Swedish Christmas tradition has unwittingly led to another “tradition” of sorts – people trying to burn it down. Since 1966, the Goat has been successfully burned down 29 times – the most recent destruction was in 2016.

Kentucky Fried Christmas Dinner, Japan

Christmas has never been a big deal in Japan. Aside from a few small, secular traditions such as giftgiving and light displays, Christmas remains largely a novelty in the country. However, a new, quirky “tradition” has emerged in recent years – a Christmas Day feast of the Colonel’s very own Kentucky Fried Chicken. The festive menu will soon be advertized on the KFC Japan website and, even if you don’t understand Japanese, the pictures sure will look delicious with everything from a Christmas-themed standard bucket to a premium roast-bird feast.

Giant Lantern Festival, Philippines

The Giant Lantern Festival (Ligligan Parul Sampernandu) is held each year on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando – the “Christmas Capital of the Philippines.” The festival attracts spectators from all over the country and across the globe. Eleven barangays (villages) take part in the festival and competition is fierce as everyone pitches in trying to build the most elaborate lantern. Originally, the lanterns were simple creations around half a metre in diameter, made from ‘papel de hapon’ (Japanese origami paper) and lit by candle. Today, the lanterns are made from a variety of materials and have grown to around six metres in size. They are illuminated by electric bulbs that sparkle in a kaleidoscope of patterns.

Hide Your Broom, Norway

Perhaps one of the most unorthodox Christmas Eve traditions can be found in Norway, where people hide their brooms. It’s a tradition that dates back centuries to when people believed that witches and evil spirits came out on Christmas Eve looking for brooms to ride on. To this day, many people still hide their brooms in the safest place in the house to stop them from being stolen.

Krampus, Austria

194 Rare Luxury Living

A beast-like demon creature that roams city streets frightening kids and punishing the bad ones – nope, this isn’t Halloween, but St. Nicholas’ evil accomplice, Krampus. In Austrian tradition, St. Nicholas rewards nice little boys and girls, while Krampus is said to capture the naughtiest children and whisk them away in his sack. In the first week of December, young men dress up as the Krampus (especially on the eve of St. Nicholas Day) frightening children with clattering chains and bells.

Calvacade of Lights, Toronto In wonderful Toronto, the annual Cavalcade of Lights marks the official start to the holiday season. The first Cavalcade took place in 1967 to show off Toronto’s newly constructed City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. The Square and Christmas tree are illuminated by more than 300,000 energyefficient LED lights that shine from dusk to 11 pm until the New Year. On top of that, you’ll get to witness spectacular fireworks shows and engage in some outdoor ice skating.

Roller Bladers, Venezuela Love Christmas, but think it could be improved by a spot of roller-blading? If the answer is yes, visit Caracas, Venezuela this year. Every Christmas Eve, the city’s residents head to church in the early morning – so far, so normal – but, for reasons known only to them, they do so on roller skates. This unique tradition is so popular that roads across the city are closed to cars so that people can skate to church in safety, before heading home for the less-thantraditional Christmas dinner of ‘tamales’ (a wrap made out of cornmeal dough and stuffed Rare Luxury Living with meat, then steamed).
