Mixed use project

This is a mixed use project presented as a third year project at the University of Jordan, Department of Architecture. The conception of this project did not stem from a highly theoretical and abstract notion: it was rather derived from the nature of the project itself. Mixed-use development can be defined as a building, or set of buildings, or neighborhood that house a multi varied combination of

residential, commercial, industrial, office, institutional, or other activities. By that, mixed use developments activates urban areas during more hours of the day; Increase housing options for diverse household types; reduces auto dependence; increases travel options; and most importantly create a local sense of place.

left in its platonic state; its inelasticity is lessened and animated through subtractions, additions, and deformations. Its metallic mesh allows light and movement to be seen on the outside while giving required privacy. The cubic mass is not randomly configured; the allocation of walls, columns, subdivisions and additions, and the overall massing is regulated by ideal geometry. Nevertheless, the monotony of this geometry was broken by a tilted module that accounts for unexpected events that change the direction of our lives and echoes new complexities.

Year 2014

The Business school project design is a theoretical investigation of how abstract concepts and ideas are articulated as physical form through the application of ideal and complex geometries, hence the name morphometric machine.

4th Year Project/ Competition Entry

The morphometric machine is a formal statement that materializes the tension between the comfort and security of the long held orthodox business traditions and the more open-ended methods of conducting business in the twenty first century. As such, the form acts as a memory machine that reminds

students and users of the building of the complex ideas and concepts of the business world. Thus, the project is conceived as an articulate, dynamic, and spatial shipyard that teaches and educates through its spatial and physical design. Theoretically, as the design addressed issues of business

principles, architectural principles, and geometry, an integral part of the formal exercise was to address the relationship between an idea and its copy or physical representation. This was conducted within the philosophical framework Eleatic monism, sophistic

relativism and platonic idealism. Through its formal expression, the machine investigated how the Eleatic concepts of aletheia i.e. truth, and Doxa i.e. appearances can be architecturally addressed.

The composition contains a clear structure, but it is a unique and new, a self-forming structure, which is achieved by undoing the structure of fixed codes and static grids of conventional configurations……… By mixing up different explicitly… a new form comes into being…. The basic conception behind the design is to collapse real and virtual worlds into one through the creation of a gaming universe that is a hybrid of virtual elements and physical objects (HVP). In this universe, the outer world of reality merge and meet with the inner world of the mind. Such a designed universe creates a state of spatial immersion, a state of being physically present in a non-physical non-abstract world giving rise to the state of multidimensional consciousness where one is conscious on more than one dimension and more than one level. In such a universe, the concrete and abstract, the real and virtual no longer constitute a duality, rather the two become one. To design this state of becoming, of transition, of transcendence is to design a Bhト」a. As such, the design of a CTC is conceived as the design of orders in collision: an order of existing reality confronted and challenged by an order of the new materialized virtual, nevertheless forming a Gestalt.

Competition Entry/ Winning 2015

The design of the project is the creation of a field condition in which a Cartesian system of modular elements establishing structure and boundaries of materials echoing the memory of the site is disrupted by a parasitic tectonic structure that moves and transforms portraying a world in a perpetual state of change. The design is seen as an interplay between the Cartesian grid and energetic form that disrupts and challenges the omnipresence of the Cartesian grid and launching towards the fourth dimension.

Terrorism is commonly defined as violent acts intended to create fear (terror); to perpetrate for a religious, political, or ideological goal; and to deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants. By 2030, the act of terrorism in Arab countries is expected to rise. The big question, then, is how the reconstructed buildings and spaces for living should incorporate the tremendous changes brought about by the destruction and its aftermath? The restoration of buildings such as offices and apartments should reflect the huge changes that took place. Thus, the rebuilding requires a radical reconstruction-not restoration to a pre-state- in Lebbeus Woods terms- that embodies the physical and social transformations caused by the destruction and violence. This involves the celebration of the remnants of destruction, the injection of new structures in blasted and abandoned voids, and the reformation of scraps into new types of material, structures, and spaces. also Obtaining the Beryllium signifies the most important aspect of the project: in a country characterized by the scarcity of natural resources and severe shortage of water like Jordan, the Tree Of Life -name of the project- provides the opportunity to make use of the few valuable resources: water collection and purification, and the extraction of heavy metals from underground and rain water. Consequently, the Tree of life acts a machine that addresses environmental issues through the use of technology.

A pilot treatment plant purifies water through several stages: Solids such as leaves and soil are removed through speciallyprepared layers of sand and gravel called filter beds. The water is then passed through a fine filter, such as carbon granules, to remove very small particles. The water is then passed into a sedimentation tank. Heavy metal contaminants (silver, zinc, etc.) are extracted through high intensity ultrasound waves produced via ultrasonic transducers.

Heavy metals are then collected for further treatment. Beryllium is gathered and pumped into treated packs with nano batteries. The tree of life is a concept is sacred to most cultures. The tree of life connects three worlds; it soars upward beyond the undefinable,

The use of the tree of life in my design is thri-fold: it was generically used to refer to the simultaneous connection between the past present and future; between the physical and abstract; , and between the synchronic and diachronic changes that take place currently in the economic, social, and cultural fabric of Jordan

The project is a community technological center presented as a graduation project at the University of Jordan, department of architecture. As humans, we occupy a multiplicity of worlds; from the past to the future, from the physical to the abstract, and from the real to the virtual. Nevertheless, gaps and clashes exist between these worlds. Acknowledging the parallels and divides between the physical and abstract worlds requires a narrative that brings all these worlds together. Such a narrative

was used in the design of the Bhト」a, a Community Technology Center (CTC). This tectonic structure that is anexact, temporal, and disproportionate is not created without merit; its geometry is scripted by mathematics of space and time as demonstrated by Lorentz transformations of space and time i.e. to stretch and squash. More pertinently, the curvature and breaking of the structure is stirred by quantum mechanics, and more specifically chromo dynamics and lattice theory to calculate the rotation, coupling, and splitting of the various components of form By selecting a time slice to show the topological chart of the vacuum calculated and presenting it as a transformative tectonic structure, a diachronic objectile of enexact geometries will be created..

The overall design is a dynamic constructivist composition of ordered structure and splintered surfaces and twisted wiry forms creating a fantastical scene depicting an alternative world that glimpses into a parallel universe. This composition is not without merit; it is governed by the interaction of faktura, the particular material properties of an object, tektonika, its spatial presence, and underlying laws of physics, chromodynamics, and lattice theory.

The Emergent informality of the tree of life is meant to entitle and empower the neglected urban poor by means of using progressive architecture as a vehicle for social change. Through the use of 3D cellular Automata as a generative system, the project contemplates spaces for housing, health services, religious ceremonies or cults, public education, forums, and workshops for cultural activities, allowing them live in a space where their work, education, and health requirements are met. To create our intervention, we have resolved to contemporary generative design approaches; the 3D Ant Cellular Automatavertical highway as an extension to Langton’s ant, where a pattern of initial cell/s is replicated along a path called a high way given certain rules and restrictions to create a spatial form. The replication of the cell, a container in our case, creates what C. M. Herr calls a ‘vertical village’: a high-rise structure that provides a rigid frame structure with completely flexible

Ottoman Hammam Dome

Year 2015

The focus of our research was to look into crystalline growth and apply this research into the definition of a new typology for the Hammam (Turkish bath). We have carried a photographic survey of crystalline growth and selected a specimen where we envisaged interesting spacial and volumetric qualities. Looking at the crystal aggregation selected we defined a set of building blocks with a fixed shape and different percentages of porosities. We set a rule of aggregation, based on a spiral movement and an alteration in scale and rotation. We defined different mixes of base components to run the aggregation rule with and in turn we evaluated their performances based on the analysis of light penetration inside the result shape. We refined our mix and created several aggregations, tested them, until we reached our target value for the light penetration (set to %65, based on a brief analysis of the existing typology)

Summer School AAVJ Visiting school

Using the rule of aggregation for the same pattern with 100% block mix, we aimed to reach a lighting criteria of 30% penetration, therefore we evaluated the shadow produced from the domes that was designed. We experienced with different porosities for the same built block to get a variation of domes with different light penetration, therefore we evaluated the results based on our criteria which is specific light penetration. And finally got the design that best fits the most the Turkish bath atmosphere of light penetration.
