HEALING THE CITY WITH MEDITATION
PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED BY THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT ON A PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL AND MENTAL LEVEL. THE ENVIRONMENT CAN CREATE OR REDUCE STRESS, WHICH IN TURN IMPACTS OUR BODIES IN MULTIPLE WAYS. LIFESTYLE, WORK RELATED ISSUES, FINANCIAL ISSUES TEND TO INCREASE STRESS IN CITIES. THEREFORE, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES ARE ON A RISE. STRESS AND ANXIETY ARE SOARING IN 21ST CENTURY LIKE NEVER BEFORE. BASED ON DATA BY VARIOUS ORGANISATIONS, ANALYSIS ON MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS HAS BEEN DONE, TO PROMOTE A HEALTHY WAY OF LIVING. FOR THE SAME, MEDITATIVE AND CONSCIOUSNESS-BASED PRACTICES HAVE BEEN STUDIED. RESEARCHES DONE IN THE PAST ATTEST THE FACT THAT MEDITATION ENHANCES PERFORMANCE OF PEOPLE PHYSIOLOGICALLY AND ALSO PSYCHOLOGICALLY. IT CAN IMPROVE THE MENTAL WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE. THIS THESIS FOCUSES ON MEDITATION AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SPACES IN REDUCING STRESS AND ACTING AS A CONFLUENCE PLACE. IT TARGETS THE CONSTRUCTION OF A STRUCTURE WHICH IS SUITABLE FOR ALL AGE GROUPS. IT IS A STEP TOWARDS LESSENING MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AND HELPING THE SOCIETY BY THE MEANS OF ARCHITECTURE AND PSYCHOLOGY OF SPACES AND COLOURS.

SHODHGANGA
‘SHODH’ IS A MARATHI (OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF MAHARASHTRA) WORD WHICH MEANS ‘SEARCH’ AND ‘GANGA’ IS THE NAME OF A HOLY RIVER IN INDIA. THEREFORE, ‘SHODHGANGA’ MEANS A RIVER OF KNOWLEDGE WHERE YOU FIND ANSWERS TO ALL THAT YOU SEARCH FOR. IT DRAMATICALLY REFRESHES THE ARCHITECTURE OF SURROUNDING AREA AS IT IS PROPOSED IN JOGESHWARI, AN AREA OF CLUSTERED HOUSES AND NO PUBLIC SPACE. THIS IS THE MAIN REASON WHY ‘SHODHGANGA’ IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT SERVES AS A SOCIAL INTERACTION SPACE ALONG WITH A REFERENCE SOURCE FOR EVERYONE. KEEPING THE LOCATION AND DIRECTIONS IN MIND, MORE OPEN SPACES ARE GIVEN IN NORTH FOR AMPLE AMOUNT OF LIGHT TO ENTER THE PREMISES. ALSO, A COURTYARD IS PROVIDED IN THE MIDDLE TO ACT AS A POLYVALENT SPACE. DUE TO INCREASED USE OF INTERNET, E-BOOKS AND MOBILE DEVICES, THE ROLE OF LIBRARY HAS EVOLED OVER TIME. IN EFFECT, THE LIBRARY IS A MULTI-FACETED SPACE THAT FOR SOME PEOPLE SERVES AS DEDICATED READING ROOM, WHILE FOR WRITERS AND SCHOLARS IT SERVES AS AN EXTENSION OF THE LITERARY MEETING PLACE. A LIBRARY SHOULD PROVIDE A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT THAT OFFERS AMPLE SEATING, INTERNET ACCESS, OPTIONAL FOOD COURTS/COFFEE SHOPS AS AN INTERACTIVE SPACE.

FASHION DESIGN INSTITUTE
THE INSTITUTE HAS BEEN PROPOSED IN GOREGAON, MUMBAI. BY VIRTUE OF ITS LOCATION, IT IS WELL CONNECTED BY VARIOUS MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION WHICH MAKES IT AN IDEAL LOCATION FOR AN INSTITUTE. AS FASHION IS AN ART, THE INSTITUTE IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT ENCOURAGES LEARNING BEYOND CLASSROOMS. THEREFORE, CORRIDORS ARE WIDER THAN USUAL SO AS TO ACT AS EXHIBITION SPACES. THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR BLEND SEAMLESSLY TO CREATE SPACES WHICH MOTIVATE THE STUDENTS TO THINK OUT OF THE BOX. SPACES LIKE CANTEEN ARE NOT RESTRICTED BY WALLS EITHER AND HAVE AMPLE SEATING BESIDE THE CONVENTIONAL TABLE AND CHAIR TO PROMOTE DISCUSSIONS AS AND WHEN REQUIRED. THE AMPHITHEATRE IS ALSO PLACED IN THE CENTRE OF THE BUILDING TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE IN COLLEGE EVENTS AS THIS WILL BOOST EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND HELP STUDENTS TO BOND WELL. THE INSTITUTE IS FABRICATED IN COLOURFUL WAYS AFTER STUDYING THE EFFECTS OF COLOUR ON HUMAN MIND. FOR EXAMPLE: YELLOW UPLIFTS MOOD, RED IS FOR PASSION, BLUE MAINTAINS A CALM ENVIRONMENT ETC. APART OF COLLEGE ACTIVITIES AND ACADEMICS, SPORTS ACTIVITIES HAVE ALSO BEEN PROPOSED AT THE BACK OF THE BUILDING FOR OVERALL GROWTH OF THE STUDENTS.

FULACHI WADI
(LANDSCAPE PROJECT)
‘FULACHI WADI’ IS A MARATHI PHRASE WHICH LITERALLY TRANSLATES TO ‘FLOWER GARDEN’ IN ENGLISH. THIS UNDERBRIDGE GARDEN PROJECT IS LOCATED IN DADAR WHICH IS GREATLY KNOWN FOR ITS ONE OF A KIND FLOWER MARKET. KEEPING THE LOCALITY AND THE TYPE OF DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED, THE PROJECT WAS NAMED AS ‘FULACHI WADI’. THE PROJECT AIMS AT PROVIDING A SPACE FOR RECREATION TO THE LOCALS IN THE MIDST OF THIS HUSTLING CITY OF MUMBAI. IN THE LAST FEW YEARS WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAYS AND FLYOVERS BUT AS WE ALL KNOW MUMBAI HAS A SPACE CRUNCH ISSUE. THESE FLYOVERS SURELY ACCELERATE THE VEHICULAR MOVEMENT BUT CREATE DEAD SPACES BELOW. THE AIM OF THE PROJECT IS TO UTILISE THE SPACE BELOW A FLYOVER IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT CAN BE USED AS A PUBLIC SPACE BY PEOPLE OF ALL AGE GROUPS. CONSIDERING THAT THE FLYOVER IS LOCATED NEAR A SHELTER HOME AND AN ART SCHOOL, ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THEM ARE ALSO ADDED TO INVOLVE THE CITIZENS IN THE BEAUTIFICATION OF THE SPACE AND HENCE ENCOURAGING A SENSE OF BELONGING AMONG THE PEOPLE.

MAHESHWARI HOUSE The Maheshwari house is built in Jodhpur, a city rich in art, culture and heritage. A vast treasure trove of majestic forts, palaces and temples built in stone, Jodhpur showcases a clear relationship between architecture, artistry and power. Here, the brilliance of the combination is reflected through the articulate use of stone as a primary material. Inspired from the old forts of Jaipur and built from local stone, the bungalow boasts sustainable credibility. Its structure is a unique combination of RCC and load bearing, where the strength is provided by RCC, and combined with the discerning use of stone, the bungalow is structured to be durable, weather resistant and expressive. One of the first principles of sustainable and environmentally friendly architecture is to reduce the embodied energy used in construction. The project sits in a location that experiences contrasting climate and extreme diurnal variations throughout the day and night. This helped to give expression to the primary design principle in this project. The house has a layout of four vaulted spaces
arranged on two floors. Each vault is double layered – a stone vault over a brick vault, with an air cavity in between acting as an insulation, especially in the winters. Air being a poor conductor of heat due to its inherent properties, acts as a barrier to heat transfer when used as a packing material between the two layers of the roof. In summer during the daytime, the stone absorbs heat, which in turn transfers the heat to the cavity, thereby heating the air within. The air is allowed to leave from the weep holes provided at the ends of the vault. When the air leaves, pressure reduces in the cavity, which pulls air inside from the other weep hole, forming a continuous cycle of air flow that keeps the inner spaces cool. These weep holes are concealed with cigarette buds that acts as a barrier for rats and insects from entering the space, allowing only airflow through them. As such, the context, climate and culture were the drivers of not just the bungalow’s material palette, but also of its design and construction sensibilities – qualities that meld together to lend a unique character to the project.

GYMNASIUM The gymnasium building is located in the sports block with other sports facilities in Swarnabhomi, i.e. a township in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. It is a glazed structure with a pair of inclined roofs that features steps and a ramp. The use of space changes with design. The roof is traditionally used to give a shelter in design but use of space changes here by the introduction of steps and a linear ramp. This space can now be used for a variety of exercises which requires steps. This offers a spill out place for the gym. Exercising outdoors also brings variation in regular workout routine and reduces stress when nature is involved. This triggered the concept of merging the gym with landscape. The idea was to create an effect of elevated ground level. The turf on the first floor connects with a ---- meter ramp before connecting to the ground level.
The elevated level is surrounded by large overhangs on all sides which provide perfect atmosphere for training in the gym as it blocks the harsh sunlight and only allows indirect light to enter the structure. Such kind of large overhangs also make the structure elegant. Apart from sloping roof the structure is shaped like a glass cube. Glazed walls fill the structure, allowing ample of natural light to enter. It provides an obstructed view while exercising. Thus fluidity is maintained between landscape and people by proposing different architectural features.

DOCUMENTATION OF ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE (TOP 5 NATIONAL FINALIST)
THE DOCUMENTATION OF THE AUNDH WADA AND THE YAMAI DEVI TEMPLE IN AUNDH, SATARA REQUIRED AN IN DEPTH STUDY OF THE MARATHA ADMINISTRATION, THE ROLE OF THE PANT PRATINIDHIS AND THE EVENTS CENTERING AROUND THE PRINCELY STATE OF AUNDH. AUNDH, WITH BHAVANRAO SRINIVASRAO ALIAS BALASAHEB AS ITS PRATINIDHI, BECAME AN IMPORTANT STATE OF SOUTHERN MAHARASHTRA IN THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY. IT WAS THE VERY FIRST TO HAND OVER ADMINISTRATION TO A REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL. THIS EVENT THAT TOOK PLACE IN 1939 IS TODAY KNOWN AS THE AUNDH EXPERIMENT AND IS THE FIRST FORM OF DEMOCRACY IN INDIA. THE AUNDH WADA HAS THE DISTINCT HONOUR OF WITNESSING THESE LANDMARKS IN HISTORY FIRST HAND. IT WAS BUILT BY MEN WHO HELPED SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE COUNTRY. THEREFORE, BY STUDYING, DOCUMENTING AND ANALYSING THESE SPACES, WE ARE AFFORDED A GLIMPSE INTO THE MOTIVATIONS OF THE PRATINIDHI AS WELL AS THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS THAT MADE SUCH EVENTS POSSIBLE. THE SITE OF THE WADA TODAY SEES A FAIR NUMBER OF VISITORS, BOTH LOCALS AS WELL AS TOURISTS FROM ALL OVER MAHARASHTRA DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF THE YAMAI DEVI TEMPLE, A KULDEVI FOR SEVERAL MAHARASHTRIANS.
