introduction. This book talks about the two most intersteing places in world, San Francisco and NYC. Each state is given one particular colour which you can associate with. These stories are a collaboration. The drawing and illustrations are mine. All the while I drew everything I noticed. Drawing on location helps me notice things I’d otherwise overlook. People are often put off by a stranger with a camera in their neighbourhood, but what they see someone standing on a street corner drawing with a pen on a pad of paper, they stop. The twenty to thirty different people I spoke to. This book is by no means intented as a comprehsive portrayal of the two states. It’s only a small handfull of the huge number of places to be found in the cities. This is what happens in the meanwhile. Rashi S.

Information.

Golden Gate Bridge,

suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, in California, U.S. It links San Francisco with Marin county to the north. From its completion in 1937 to the completion of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City in 1964, it had the longest main span in the world, and it remains incomparable in the magnificence of its setting. Its construction, under the supervision of Joseph B. Strauss, involved many difficulties: rapidly running tides, frequent storms and fogs (during one of which a cargo vessel collided with the access trestle, causing serious damage), and the problem of blasting rock under deep water to plant earthquake-proof foundations. The main span, 4,200 feet (1,280 metres) long, is suspended from two cables hung from towers 746 feet (227 metres) high; at midpoint the roadway is 265 feet (81 metres) above mean high water.

SF CABLE CARS AUG 2, 1873

History. The majestic Golden Gate Bridge, barking sea lions at Pier 39, and the gray fog rolling over the coastline are a few iconic images of San Francisco. But perhaps there is no symbol quite as synonymous with the city as the cable car. It’s easy to look at the cable car and see a touristy gimmick, but in fact, the famed mode of transportation has a deep-rooted history that’s as fascinating as the colorful murals that line Haight-Ashbury. San Francisco cable cars trace their roots all the way back to 1873. The cable car system in San Francisco can be credited in large part to Andrew S. Hallidie, an engineer, originally hailing from Scotland, who promptly saw the need for better transportation options in the City by the Bay. Supposedly, Hallidie witnessed a horse-drawn buggy struggling to pull an enormous load up one of the city’s famed hills. It was then that the idea for the cable car struck him.

The Chinatown centered on Grant Avenue and Stockton Street in San Francisco, California, is the oldest Chinatown in North America and the largest Chinese enclave outside Asia. It is the oldest of the four notable Chinatowns in the city. Since its establishment in 1848, it has been highly important and influential in the history and culture of ethnic Chinese immigrants in North America. Chinatown is an enclave that continues to retain its own customs, languages, places of worship, social clubs, and identity. While recent immigrants and the elderly choose to live here because of the availability of affordable housing and their familiarity with the culture, the place is also a major tourist attraction, drawing more visitors annually than the Golden Gate Bridge.

s its name would suggest, Broadway is a wide street in New York City that runs the full length of Manhattan, from its southern tip at Bowling Green to its northern tip at Inwood and even on into the Bronx. It's the oldest north-south street in New York City, existing as a Native American path since before the city was first settled and called New Amsterdam.

Even though there are many famous sites along the several miles of Broadway, one small stretch comes to mind when most people hear the word “Broadway." It's the part of Broadway between 42nd and 53rd streets — including Times Square — that is considered the home of the American theater industry. This famous section of Broadway is known as the Theater District. You will also often hear it called “The Great White Way." his famous section of Broadway is known as the Theater District. You will also often hear it called “The Great White Way." This nickname came about because Broadway was one of the first streets in the United States to be lit with electric lights. The nickname remains popular today because millions of lights on theater marquees and billboard advertisements still light up the night sky along Broadway. The Theater District is home to 40 large professional theaters. Each of these theaters seats 500 or more people. They host a constantly changing variety of productions, including plays and musicals. Many people believe the theatrical productions on Broadway are the best in the world. Each year, the best Broadway shows are awarded Tony Awards. Broadway shows are one of the most popular tourist attractions in New York City. In 2010, Broadway shows sold more than $1 billion in tickets! Because many of the shows are popular and quite profitable, they often run for years and years, only closing when they stop drawing new audiences and become unprofitable. The longest-running musical in Broadway history is The Phantom of the Opera. It opened on Broadway in 1988 and is still going strong today, giving more than 9,500 performances to date. The Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera has made more than $715 million dollars, making it the most financially successful Broadway show in history. It also won the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical.
