CASE STUDY The task was to pick a villa or a residence and analysis it thoroughly. We got exposure to different architects and their works . We learned how to graphically present ideas and communicate better. This case study made us learn about new ideas and design.

ZONING There is a segregation between private and public zone. A person can only pass through this walk way but it is really interesting and pleasing due to the beautiful view parallel to it. The path could have been extended a little so that it can fit two people while walking.

CIRCULATIONÂ ANDÂ AXIS

STRONG AXIS

There are two main axis directing the house. The top and bottom areas are heavier and have the most volume, whereas the middle area has less volume. It gives an impression that it is intentionally done so that the space appears balanced. This is also the reason the top and bottom are the strong axis

STRONG AXIS

PROXIMITY The placement of kitchen and entrance is downstairs which makes it inconvenient. There is ample space to provide a smaller kitchen upstairs so that a person doesn't has to go all the way downstairs. There should also be an alternative for the entrance to access from the first floor.

From Dinning area kitchen can be accessed by few steps away. Servant room is kept separate from the whole space and is in extreme corner. It has a washroom attached so that the privacy is maintained throughout . It even has an access to the kitchen

SUN PATH DIAGRAM

PRINCIPLE OF DESIGN AND BALANCE The architect is driven by L- shape or linear form ( as shown in the picture below). There is a sense of symmetry in the space, but not in the overall space. Symmetry is in different areas like in kitchen, swimming pool, living area and other areas. There is a sense of balance in the entire space due to the equilibrium created in the volumes.

MATERIALS STONE WALL GLASS

IPS EPOXY COATED FLOORING

WEATHER CONDITIONS ‐ KHANDALA

WOOD DARK WOOD

During the summer season, the maximum temperature rises up to 32°C, which is controlled due to the presence of swimming pool. There is a good circulation of air in the middle of the horizontal plane. It receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season , which is a matter of concern as the living area is an open space. It should have some covering or any shed to protect from rain. During the months of October to February, it experiences a minimum temperature of 12°C. There is ample amount of sunlight entering in winters due to the location of the villa.

STRUCTURE

DESIGNING RESIDENCE The task was to design our residence keeping in mind the requirements of the family members. This process under go various steps. All these steps were very important. We first had to decide what we want and want we have, on basis of this design brief was made. Design brief helps us to open our minds and put our thinking caps on. Zoning helps to identify the public and private areas. Paper model was also an important stage where we had to drawing the elevations and here our design took a turning point. 3D gives us a clearer idea. Sketchup was the tool which we used and we realized some things look good in 3D and some don’t. We also learned the color combination, in fact even how to balance colors.

PROJECT BRIEF AIM: To fulfill the requirements of the family members and build their spaces. CLIENT: SAWHNEY FAMILY REQUIRMENTS: The existing residence is not as per the clients, so to achieve their wants by redesigning the residence. SITE ANALYSIS

DESIGN BRIEF DRAWING AND DINNING ROOM Drawing room is a different space, there is no connection between both(drawing and dinning) of them, they are parallel to each other but it does not solves the purpose of unity in both spaces as dining and drawing rooms are together with no partition between them. The sofa table, which is not appropriate according to the sofa arrangement. The arrangement is not suitable which also does not allow a good interaction space. As it does not allows separate interaction, everyone has to interact collectively. SOLUTION The dinning and drawing room should be placed in such a manner that it acts as a united space and as well a separate one. In the drawing room , there should be two corners, one for larger group interactions and one for two-people interactions. The distance between the furniture should be reduced for a better interaction. FAMILY LOUNGE Drawing room and family lounge are the same. The same room/space/area is used for both, private and public space. In fact the grandmother’s room is also treated as the family lounge. SOLUTION To give a separate space for a family lounge so that everyone can spend quality time in their respective spaces rather than entering the public area. There can also be a sitting space in the grandmother’s room, so that everyone doesn't ends up acquiring all of her bed space. MASTER BEDROOM The existing room is really small in comparison to a master bedroom . It has small windows and a balcony attached to it. The balcony also acts as the utility area. There is no separate area to sit or to have a good conversation, one has to sit on the bed or utilize to\he bed for all the activities. SOLUTION A large room with a master toilet which should have a private deck and a sitting area. SIBLINGS' ROOM There is no separate room for my sister. She shares her living with my grandmother and the room which is allotted to me and my sister. SOLUTION Separate room which can be called as her space. GUEST BEDROOM There isn't a guest bedroom at my place. SOLUTION To have a separate room for guest, which is distant from the other spaces. The room should have a washroom and for getting ready so that they don’t use your private spaces. KITCHEN A triangular movement in kitchen. It is an open kitchen one can see when someone is washing the dirty utensils. SOLUTION There should be a separate area for washing. GURUDWARA It is outside the room and is difficult to access. SOLUTION It should be inside the house.

PROXIMITYÂ CHART

CURRENT PROXIMITY CHART

The Current Proximity Chart shows the relation between the existing space.

DESIRED PROXIMITY CHART

The Desired Proximity Chart depicts the relation needed in the residence and also to overcome the problem created in the existing residence relationships.

APPLICATION OF REM IN CONCEPT My grandmothers cannot walk properly so, the spaces should be in her reach, especially the kitchen.

As all the members of family are outside the house during the day for their respective works so, dinner is the only meal when everyone is present in the house. So there should be a breakfast counter and dinning table

The REM report helped us in understanding the spatial environment in the existing residence. It brought this in focus which we don't notice in our daily routine.

Gurudwara is outside the house as I won’t prefer it to be around my room, due to my beliefs. The other family members want the gurudwara to be the central focus and reachable to them.

BUBBLE DIAGRAM

PROS: • Kitchen is centrally placed. • Private and public areas are separate. • Entry into lobby. • All the spaces are near grandmother’s room.

CONS: • Family lounge will have maximum sunlight if used in day.

The size of the bubble depends on size of the room. All the bubbles are then joined in such a way that the location is also indicated as well as which room should be near which room and also the relation between the spaces.

PROS: • Kitchen is centrally placed. • Integrated dinning and family lounge area. • Gurudwara is on a little distance from dinning and family lounge spaces , so that if a person is using the gurudwara he/she is not disturbed. CONS: • Grandmothers' room is far from family lounge..

PROS: • Kitchen and gurudwara are near. • courtyard and staircase are overlapped • storage is clubbed with empty space , to utilizes space efficiently,

CONS: • Kitchen is far from mom/dad’s room • Combined greenery and balcony one will get disturbed, if someone is working..

ZONING

To make the sectional division of all the rooms and divide them accordingly on the ground floor and first floor of the house and on the basis of bubble diagram of individual rooms and whole house .

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

We made the furniture arrangements for each room to understand the exact space requirements of each kind of furniture with its circulation space.

VARIOUS PLANS WERE MADE TO ACHIEVE THE DESIRED QUALITY AND FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF FAMILY MEMBERS

PAPERÂ MODEL

Paper model was very essential for fulfilling the needs of practical clarity. Many changes were made while doing study model. One needs to be acquainted with how the elevations look and even with the opening, so that if something is off, one can make the necessary changes and acquire from it. It is essential to visualize, but it is most important to see how it actually appearances in 3D
