HIGHER EDUCATION

HEALTHCARE

Creating a Comfortable Patient Experience The integration of parking at a hospital should focus on creating a convenient, comfortable, and safe experience for patients. Critical elements to parking structure design for hospitals include the location of elevators, distance from the hospital, vehicle flow within and around the garage, and signage to minimize additional stress on its patrons.

Creating Community to Enhance Student Life Parking can be a unique strategy for enhancing community and providing opportunities for creating active and vibrant people places. Parking is a critical element for campus growth. The integration of mixed-use can bring a more comfortable pedestrian scale, while effectively utilizing limited space.

TRANSPORTATION

COMMERCIAL

Parking Solution Encouraging Transit Use TimHaahs understands the unique and complex issues associated with constructing near transit. It is critical to provide a safe and inviting atmosphere for commuters, residents, and visitors. Structured parking should consider and plan for the various transit elements, as well as redevelopment opportunities.

Not Just “Business as Usual Parking for corporate campuses or business districts should meet the needs of employees, in terms of safety, functionality, and convenience. Careful consideration of pedestrian connectivity, travel distances, and lighting will have a major impact on the satisfaction of employees utilizing the facility.

16

17

GOVERNMENT

MIXED-USE

Effective Parking Solutions at ALL Levels of Government Parking for the government sector requires special consideration, and a challenging balance of accessibility and security. From high level security requirements at federal facilities to an accessible and attractive pedestrian, ‘experience’, parking serving federal, state, and local facilities must consider the unique needs and considerations of government clients.

Creating Active and Vibrant Destinations Parking is a gateway, and plays a major role in decisions to visit a destination. Town centers and entertainment venues must meet the challenge of offering safe, convenient, and attractive parking options for users to keep them coming back again and again.

18

19

ASSET MANAGEMENT

SUSTAINABILITY

Asset Management Solutions to Enhance Life Cycle Parking structures are unique facilities, exposed to a range of harsh conditions. If not properly maintained, they can experience detrimental consequences. TimHaahs understands the value of our clients’ parking assets. We have significant experience performing asset management services from condition appraisals and restoration to the development of comprehensive maintenance programs.

Focus on Sustainable Strategies TimHaahs integrates sustainable design practices in our projects. We focus on shared-use analysis to maximize utilization and decrease the number of spaces to be constructed. We investigate energy efficiency and the application of renewable energy and lighting retrofits to decrease energy use. We work with our clients to capitalize on the environmental benefits of these design choices, as well as the economic rewards. TimHaahs is an active USGBC member, and 25% of our staff earned their LEED AP status. TimHaahs considers the environmental, economic, and social responsibilities to guide our clients through the complex issues involved in developing a sustainable project.

20

21

PARKING STUDIES

INTERNATIONAL Parking as a Global Challenge Geography, culture, and transportation choice vary widely by country, and each county and city shapes its own parking and transportation policies and trends. Parking infrastructure needs to interact with these trends and regulations, and respond to cultural norms and demands. Despite these broad differences, parking infrastructure is critical, especially in dense urban centers. Planning efficient, effective, and well-placed parking can influence our perception and experience of a place. TimHaahs has implemented parking solutions internationally, intentionally focused on creating dynamic people places and more sustainable communities.

What Cannot Be Measured Cannot Be Evaluated It is important to identify proactive parking solutions to serve the current and future parking needs of towns, cities, and communities. TimHaahs regularly performs supply and demand studies, feasibility studies, and operational studies for hospitals, higher education, municipalities, and private clients, to improve their campus or place of business.

22

23

THE PARKING CHALLENGE

utilizing effective parking strategies to create self-sustaining communities

How can we revitalize our cities, create “people places”, and reduce our environmental impact? Parking plays a vital role in the success and development of all areas from downtown urban neighborhoods to the suburbs. Sustainability at the community level – cities, towns, and suburbs – requires a major paradigm shift, a great leap of faith, and extension of our commitment to sustainable design, far beyond the walls of “green” design. As countries, states, and cities seek to reduce carbon emissions, we will be compelled to take a hard look at how we plan, develop, and construct our cities, our institutions, and our homes. The effective integration of parking is, and will continue to be, an extremely important piece of this strategy. TimHaahs has developed a “cellular” development model that incorporates the principles of New Urbanism, parking and sustainable design to create self-sustaining communities. The model provides a replicable framework that can be proactively utilized to transform new development as well as retrofit existing urban and suburban nodes. The model reduces auto dependency and the resultant congestion, pollution, carbon emissions, and commuting time; reduces the infrastructure required for parking to serve the community; and ultimately, creates walkable streets and healthier, livable, self-sustaining communities. For more information about this model, please contact TimHaahs.
