PROFILE rat[LAB]INTERIORS is a subset of

rat[LAB]-Research in Architecture & Technology, started as an initiative by Anchal Chaudhary & Sushant Verma to explore formal intersections of parametric design techniques and interior spaces. The collaborative venture focuses on rational use of technology for design of interior spaces, to foster memorable spaces, distinctive brands and meaningful experiences. There is a strong intent of creating transformative spaces that can positively affect the usability by creating an exchange between the interior and exterior environment. rat[LAB] - Research in Architecture & Technology, is an independent research organization and network of designers & researchers specializing in computational design or similar technology-related domains. Operated as a cloud-based organization with an international network of researchers & computational designers spread across UK, USA, Europe & Asia, and a studio in New Delhi, India, the research cell functions as a global collaborative and multidisciplinary laboratory facilitating design research that leads to novel spatial tectonics and smart built environments.

Why a Research Cell?

Majority of architectural firms around the world are not equipped with inhouse research units with state-ofthe-art knowledge in computational technology and parametric design. Designs may lack advanced research and project workflow is usually inefficient & unproductive due to inadequate (or no) use of computational design techniques. These techniques are being developed today at a growing rate and can potentially change the way design is practiced, processed and articulated. Computation (with its varied subsets) is one of the most advanced and growing area of research that potentially takes control of all design tools and processes at multiple scales, and is utilized by majority of leading architects & designers around the globe. rat[LAB] aims at facilitating architects & designers as specialists to introduce advanced research and optimize designs, workflows, modelling techniques and processes by adding a scientific approach with computation at its core.

METHODOLOGY Today’s design is fairly complex which requires interdisciplinary exchange between discrete fields of design, engineering and computation to work simultaneously through a seamless process. Thus we have developed a methodology, a step by step process that allows for multiple disciplines to integrate at various stages of a project, aiding in efficient and productive workflow, with a scope of additive growth to the knowledge database of the research cell and the project. Owing to continuous technological advancements and cloud networking systems for complex data sharing and management, rat[LAB] team is able to work smoothly by concentrating the brightest minds and specialists from different parts of the world, together in a virtual data space, exploiting the differences in time zones around the world. The current methodology has been tested for various research projects and still continues to improve with new projects with changing requirements and deadlines. Our key goal is to narrow down the gap between architecture and technology, with respect to design process, methodology and workflow, for projects ranging across scales & disciplines. Our key agendas are: -Sustainability -Design-to-Fabrication Workflow -Geometry Optimization -Material Intelligence -Cost Optimization -Enhancing Design Experience

rat[LAB]INTERIORS uses computational and parametric methods to design interior spaces with a blend of bold aesthetics with technology. While technology forms a backbone as our design method, smart aesthetics through use of materiality and colours form the forefront of our work. Using data driven design methods, we are able to implement parametric design into interior spaces of a varied scale and typology. We inculcate a laboratory based studio culture where science meets art to create smart interior environments for spaces of all scales.

We use spatial analysis and Agent based modelling methods which serve as powerful tools to generate and design internal layouts for buildings . The tools can be used to generate layouts for various functions like office spaces, apartments, shops, shopping malls etc. Agent based generative modelling replicates human behaviour in space and hence generates possible design suggestions to suit the needs of its users. The space can be programmed to be generative, conservative, promote interactions, control movements etc. as per the requirements of the clients. The performance of the space as per the requirements can be measured, analysed and improved.
