GI WACAF

Annual Report 2008

In 2008 the level of regional preparedness increased by 6% rising from 32% to 38% (of 43 assessed indicators). Tangible results were recorded in the region evidenced by the development of oil spill sensitivity mapping and the finalisation of National Oil Spill Contingency Plans (NOSCP) in a number of countries. In 2008, five workshops were delivered involving more than 200 delegates. Countries demonstrated growing commitment in terms of funding and efforts delivered to strengthen their oil spill response capability. The overall management of the GI WACAF project was enhanced in 2008 through the appointment of 15 officially designated government focal points and the identification of a further 31 industry focal points. Good progress was achieved in 2008 toward the objective of the biennium. These objectives were established by our government focal points during 0 the regional biennial launch held in Congo in December 2007. Six countries were particularly active and contributed towards increasing the level of oil spill preparedness in the region. Actions were driven by the GI WACAF government focal points (pictured below) with the support of various national working groups and the technical input of the local business units.
