about the organiser

Established in 1984, the School of Music aims to provide a portfolio of music courses, which are both relevant to the Singaporean music performance and education scene, and also attractive to talented international students. NAFA is the only education institution in Singapore that offers diploma and degree programmes for both Chinese and Western music instrumentalists; the Bachelor of Music (Honours) is offered in collaboration with the Royal College of Music, London (RCM) and supported by the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing. Over 200 diploma and degree students are supported by a distinguished international faculty. In addition to weekly public performances on campus, our student soloists, ensembles and orchestra can be heard regularly at performances in Singapore and abroad.

from the artistic director Dear esteemed fellow musicians, students, parents, colleagues and friends, On behalf of the organizing committee, I am delighted to warmly welcome every one of you to the Nanyang Piano Academy (NPA) 2019! The Academy was created to bring together both aspiring and advanced students, as well as pedagogues from around the region, for an intensive three days full of music-making, sharing and learning in a vibrant environment. We are honoured to have with us our distinguished group of Clinicians, all of whom are highly established musicians, along with our participants who come from all walks of life with different levels of achievement and experience – all united by our shared love for music and students. The Academy is a great opportunity for participants to experience the pleasures and reward of learning music at the highest level, of selfdiscovery to further develop personal knowledge and understanding, as well as to learn and interact with like-minded individuals. Our line-up of carefully-planned activities include open individual classes with our Clinicians, a series of informative talks, and Dalcroze eurhythmic workshops. Students in the Advanced and Aspiring Artist categories will have opportunities to perform in concerts and to participate in the NPA 2019 Piano Competition. I am certain that each one will take away a piece of inspiration to create something wonderful for the world, in the days ahead. I wish you all a fruitful and enjoyable experience! know your clinicians Ms. Lena Ching

Head of Studies, Keyboard / Senior Lecturer, Music, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts

Lena Ching received her early music education in Singapore before going to the Royal College of Music in London for her graduate and postgraduate studies, majoring in both the piano and the harpsichord. She counts herself as part of the privileged beneficiary of her teachers, Victor Doggett, Yonty Solomon, Phyllis Sellick and Ruth Dyson. Amongst Lena’s passions in life is teaching young people to cultivate a love and an understanding for music and life, as well as to see them excel in their talents and potential so as to contribute to the profession and to society. Since 1986, she has taught, developed and mentored numerous students and young performers from her private studio, from the LaSalle College of the Arts, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (the School of Music and the School of Young Talents), and also lectured for a period of time at the SIMUniversity of Buffalo. Having been a prize-winning student herself (1st prize at the National Music Competition 1980, and Runner-Up at the Diners’ Club “Pianist of the Year” Competition 1986), her piano students have also won numerous prizes at local and overseas music competitions, and many have become successful musicians or professionals with a deep interest and love for music. In the midst of a flourishing career, Lena’s continued search for excellence led her to pursue the Master of Arts degree in ‘Psychology for Musicians’ from the University of Sheffield (U.K.), in order to understand better the development and function of human talent and abilities. Her area of research and specialization was on music competitions and how they impact/affect gifted young musicians and high-ability learners. This is one of the outcomes of her illustrious career in teaching and working with musically-exceptional students. Her professional experiences have also included numerous opportunities to perform as a soloist, concerto soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist in concerts, auditions, examinations and competitions.
