FESTIVAL MESSAGE

Greetings to all, The focus of the inaugural Thailand International Band & Orchestra Festival (TIBOF) aptly captured as: “Inspiring our Youth” is aimed at promoting and inspiring our youth through band and orchestra. It also serves as a provision of opportunities and platform for exchange of musical information, ideas and interaction between different countries. Arts and culture form the core of a people’s being and the essence of their existence. It is also an extension of their human expression. The role of arts and culture as catalysts to progressive multiculturalism will gain more recognition. On behalf of the organisers and partners, we welcome you to join us in the inaugural Thailand International Band & Orchestra Festival in Bangkok where we will share the same performance platform for our youth to showcase, perform, learn and be inspired! Welcome to Bangkok, Thailand. Sincerely,

Surapol Thanyawibool Artistic Director

Congratulations on the inaugural launch of the Thailand International Band & Orchestra Festival 2019! Music has been regarded as more than a universal language as it also allows the communication and understanding of diverse cultures which in the modern world is a crucial component of globalisation. In terms of commerce, music business is one of the components contributing to trade and economy, consisting segments such as professionals (composers / singers), recording studios, engineers, record labels, retail and online music stores and performance rights organizations, etc. With the emerging technological advancements in today’s world, digitization of music shall open up more opportunities to innovation and technology segments. On top of that, music itself is also a powerful tool to create harmonization in trade between different countries, as a very good example of Hong Kong and Thailand on this occasion. This Festival will see a strong collaboration of professional, amateur and student musicians from different walks of life congregating at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, Thailand Cultural Centre and Kasetsart University. With a strong belief in the value of cultural exchange and power of art, the DITP wishes all participants of the Thailand International Band & Orchestra Festival a fruitful 4 days of learning and exchange. Once again, congratulations to the organisers and sponsors for taking the first step in believing the power of music.

Mrs. Chanunpat Pisanapipong

Trade Commissioner of Royal Thai Consulate General, and Executive Director of Thai Trade Center Hong Kong, under Department of International Trade and Promotion (DITP) Ministry of Commerce, Royal Thai Government

MESSAGE

JURY PANEL His involvement in the performing arts scene also include being the Show Director of the “United of Asia” Performance at the Opening Ceremony of the 13th Asian Games, and the Coordinator for the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra Foundation at the Special Concert in Celebration of His Majesty’s Golden Jubilee performance by the World Philharmonic Orchestra. During his enriching career as a conductor, Mr Surapol actively participated in the Concert Band Programme in Tenri, Nara, Japan and the Mid-West Bands and Orchestra Clinic in USA.

Surapol Thanyawibool Thailand Artistic Director Thailand International Band & Orchestra Festival Surapol Thanyawibool, a familiar face with many Asian and Singapore bands, he is known to be one of the most distinguished conductors from Thailand. He has worked with bands in many countries and led ensembles to garner outstanding achievements in local and international music events. Like many musicians, Mr Surapol started his interest in music during his school band days.“Through many band activities, I learned that music was all about working together as a team.”With a strong music passion that grew enormously during his school band days, Mr Surapol decided to pursue his music studies at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand to become a band director. “I felt that I would be able to gather determined students and pass on my knowledge and music skills to them. I also felt that passing on my teaching ethics would have influenced their quality of life,” said Mr Surapol, who strongly believed that the existence of a school band serves as an effective educational centre of ideal serving civilians. Mr Surapol conducted many Thai Band which the latter clinched the First Prize with Distinction and Trophy of the Week at the World Music Contest (WMC) in Kerkrade, Netherland under his leadership.

“From my wind band experiences in Japan, USA and Europe, I observed that they have a lot in common, but each with its own style of tone colors which effectively differ in the interpretation of music. This is the charisma of arts, and we can apply these attractive inspiring ideas by desire to innovate our own artistic identity. As the quote says, Ars Longa; Art never dies.” “In Thailand however, the wind ensemble scene has developed greatly on the comprehension of basic instrument playing techniques in the last 30 years. I observed that instructors and students are enthusiastic and are determined to perform quality works at the highest-level despite the lack of continued supports. Corporate governance and privatization should be conducted to preserve the quality and innovation of these creative works,” he emphasized. “In terms of orchestral music, I enjoy the works of Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Rachmaninov. In wind band music, I personally admire John Philip Sousa, James Barnes, James Curnow, and Satoshi Yagisawa’s works as their music are delightful with elegant melodies,” said Mr Surapol. Back at home in Thailand, Mr Surapol serves as the current Faculty of Western Music Division at the Kasetsart University. As the Music Director of the university’s Wind Symphony, his program is one that trains students not only in the musical aspects but also in the cultivation of virtues. “My hope is that they will continue to pass on the knowledge to their own students in future. It is only in this way that the wind band program will develop and grow.”

Founded in 1994 by the school Director, Sr.Sumol Paithong, the Santa Cruz Convent School Band formed its primal stage in a small-sized band with the school’s financial assistance in order to promote a music activity for interested students. Once it was favorably responsive, more attentive support rolled in so as to elevate the band into a standardized wind ensemble. In 2000, the Santa Cruz Convent School Band participated in the Thailand Royal Trophy Band Competition and won the Female Class Championship, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s Cup, together with the gold medals from best concert band, best marching and display and also best Thai traditional music performances. Thereafter, the Santa Cruz Convent School Band partook in the 2nd and the 6th Asian Symphonic Band Competitions Bangkok Thailand and the Thailand OBEC music band competition -- small ensemble class – rewarded the 2nd runner-up.

ANUPONG AMATAYAKUL

Recently the band leading by Professor Anupong Amatayakul, the guest conductor, was proudly awarded a gold medal in the Wind Band, Primary or Elementary School Class from the Southeast Asia Music Education Exchange or SEAMEX 2018. The school director has always been funding and promoting this kind of music activity in that it can help develop the students’ EQ, personality, discipline, etc. as well as creates many more benefits out of the classroom. Today, more and more students are very interested, so the school needs to split the band members into two categories, primary and secondary.

In 1997, Alliance Primary School Kowloon Tong founded its School Band and String Orchestra. To enrich the experience of the ensemble members, the School has been extremely active in arranging competition and music exchange opportunities for the musical ensembles to participate.

Apart from winning numerous awards at the Hong Kong Schools’ Music Festival, the School’s music ensembles also actively participate in performances and exchange programs abroad.
