We reached out to Mark P. Finlay, President & CEO of Mark P. Finlay Architects, AIA and asked what the firm is seeing in architectural and interior design nowadays.
After 40 years working with high-profile clients in top areas like Greenwich, Dallas, Palm Beach, Nantucket, Newport, South Carolina, Bermuda, British Columbia, and elsewhere, Mark comments, “The high end never stops. We’ve been extremely busy with private residential projects and designing large-scale championship golf clubs with gorgeous custom homes, clubhouses, cottages, and practice facilities. The consistent theme, across residential and club work, is quality.”
He explains, “From a design perspective, no two programs are the same, but our approach is similar. First, we’ll sit down to learn about our clients’ vision and the site.” He adds, “Clients get very involved—start to finish we can spend several years together, so above all else the process has to be fun.”

generation. Finlay reflects, “There were spectacular houses that came out of the pandemic. What happened was a massive exodus from the city. Second homes are getting bigger … multigenerational vacations are popular and lately, residential compounds built with six or more bedrooms to accommodate grandkids and extended family. We ‘make magic happen’ in designing a place that can easily handle everyone at once.”
Mark says, “The trends we notice or adhere to are not of an aesthetic nature, but in the program components. A combination of great family spaces, areas for entertaining casually and formally, phenomenal kitchens, and intimate bedrooms with fantastic bathrooms. After incorporating those pieces, our architectural goal is to design a vernacular that blends with the natural landscape and grounds these spaces.
