EDITOR’S NOTE

’ve never been a fan of the typical ‘suitedand-booted’ corporate look. Yes, I understand that it is a requirement for certain industries – government offices or hospitality, for instance – but I do think a lot of companies still put too much of an emphasis on traditional (read: boring) executive wear than on other more important things. But that’s not my main gripe with it. What I find fascinating is that the world is so preoccupied with appearances that we automatically make assumptions about a person based on how they look. For example, according to workplaceleadership.com.au, those who wear more formal business attire are perceived as “authoritative, trustworthy and more professional”, whereas those in casual attire are viewed as being “friendlier”. But it’s 2016, no? Just take a look at some of the most successful business people in the world. Think about it – if Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t the public personality we are all familiar with, would you hire him for a job based on his casual black t-shirt and jeans combo? Probably not. Would you think his net worth is $35.7 billion? No chance. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying that we should all just turn up to work tomorrow in cargo shorts and a hoodie, but maybe we should be less preoccupied about being taken seriously and focus on letting our individual personalities shine through instead. This is what I absolutely adore about our latest issue’s cover stars. All successful men in their own fields or industries, there’s no question that they know how to put a great business-appropriate look together. But they’re also not afraid of expressing their individual style and personality… choosing a cool blazer, edgy accessories or even some unique-looking shoes can turn your look from drab to fab. Our sixpage special starts on page 14, so head over for their best tips and tricks. Don’t be afraid of experimenting and enjoying what you wear – after all, the workplace is where most of us spend the majority of our time, and life’s too short for boring clothes. Enjoy the Executive Life...

Rachel McArthur p.s. A huge thank you... Our cover shoot and feature wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of the following superstars: Farah Zoghbi, Dylan Abrahams and his team at Manzil Downtown Dubai, plus Karl Jeffs and Mosh Lafuente at Gecko Media. And of course, we’d like to thank our cover stars Nouraldin Alyousuf, Joe Akkawi, Ayman Fakoussa, Paul Ramos, Andy Scott and Ian Smith for their time.

ARM CANDY

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Style Issue

EL meets regional designer Reem Salman, founder and CEO of luxury handbag brand, Belquis

What are some key trends you're noticing with handbags now? Trends in shapes and colours change every season but what is becoming a standard is that women are more than ever relying on their handbags to make a statement – so the handbag has to be unique and say something about the woman carrying it. In other words, the bag should reflect her personality. Describe your ‘aha’ moment that led to the inception of Belquis. At what point were you certain this was something you wanted to do and why? I always knew that I wanted start my own creative enterprise; this is why for my higher education, I chose an MBA rather than a Masters of Law Degree. And especially after I met a leather craftsman during a trip to Italy who made handbags with the quality and characteristics that I usually look for in a handbag, I decided I could turn my love for handbags into a business of my own and conceived the idea of Belquis. What attracted you to designing handbags? Like every woman, I love handbags; I find them – along with shoes – the best accessories to any outfit, and like every woman I always wanted my handbag with specific characteristics, which always made me imagine how the bag should look like. After meeting the craftsman, I decided to not let go of the opportunity to ask him to manufacture a bag with details as advised by me. The final outcome of this entire process was so impressive that I went back to him with more designs and this is how Belquis was born. In your opinion, what makes your work different compared to that of your peers? I focused on two aspects; the first is quality in terms of material and craftsmanship, and the

Where do you get your inspiration? Belquis as a brand took its inspiration from Italy, its leather industry, and its heritage of fashion and of course the women. This has reflected on our designs so far and it will always have an influence on every collection we make. But one cannot ignore the power of street style too; we see a trendy girl mix a backpack with a classic outfit and that's what inspired us when designing the Perla backpack, a trendy bag manufactured using the very exotic hand painted Python; mixing the trend with the luxury. Describe the type of person that carries a Belquis bag. A ‘Belquis Woman’ is confident; a woman who does not need to carry a recognised brand to boost her confidence. She’s sophisticated; a woman who has elegance and quality on her mind. And she’s unique; a woman who wants and dares to be different. Who would you love to see rock a Belquis bag? We would love to have the it girl Gigi Hadid, a proud half-Palestinian half-Dutch model, rock our Perla backpack or our Gianna soft bucket bag. We simply cannot acknowledge enough our admiration for HRH Queen Rania of Jordan and her style, and would lover her to some day rock one of our classic-style bags.

10 TIPS ON HOW TO MAINTAIN A SUIT Caring for your suits is all about handling and storing them in the proper manner

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Style Issue

Did you know that the popular belief that dry cleaning is healthy for your garments is just a myth? Caring for your custom suits is quite literally an art. One has to be extremely careful about how the garments are treated, how they are

stored and how they are cleaned. A bespoke suit is a luxury and must be cared for as one would care for a car - with love and a lot of attention. Here are 10 maintenance and care tips for your bespoke suit.

① After every wear use a lint roller to remove any dirt, lint or hair that your suit has gathered.

⑥ Hang your custom suits on well-padded heavy wooden hangers to maintain the shape of the shoulder pads.

② Air your custom suits out before storing them away. This gets rid of any odour that might have got caught in the fabric.

⑦ Dry clean your bespoke suit only once at the end of the season. Dry-cleaning too often does more harm than good to the fabric of your custom suits.

③ If there are creases on your suit, hang the trousers and the jacket separately in the bathroom and take a hot shower. This will fill the bathroom with steam and get you nice and clean. Let the suit sit for thirty minutes than bring it out and wait for the creases to relax out.

⑧ In case something spills on your custom suit, brush it off. Do not, under any circumstances, try to run it off. This will leave a permanent mark on fabrics such as linen and silk.

④ Remove anything that might still be in the pockets, so that the fabric does not stress out and sag.

⑨ Any stains on the suit should be treated immediately with a dependable stain remover from a reputable brand.

⑤ Do not store your custom suits in plastic or woollen bags as this allows the fabric to collect moisture and mildew.

⑩ Do not separate the jacket and the trouser of the suit. This will result in one wearing out faster than the other and you won’t be able to team them up as a suit.

THE CARE OF CUSTOM SUITS IS A DELICATE AFFAIR AND MUST BE UNDERTAKEN CAREFULLY. WHEN YOU NEED TO DRY CLEAN YOUR SUIT, GO TO A REPUTED CLEANER. WITH PROPER CARE, YOUR SUIT’S LIFE WILL BE MUCH LONGER THAN YOU'D EXPECT.

ON THE COVER

FUTURE OF FASHION When it comes to dressing for success, these UAE-based gentlemen have nailed their looks for their respective industries, showing that executive wear needn't be boring Interviews: Rachel McArthur | Photography: Mosh Lafuente | Location: Manzil Donwtown Dubai

THE RISING T V S TA R NOURALDIN ALYOUSUF @nouraldin1

T

he Dubai-based television presenter – currently fronting topical TV programme Dardesh Tag on Al-Hurra – is definitely one to watch. Awarded Best Khaleeji Presenter in 2013, Nouraldin began his career with Dubai TV, before also appearing on Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya. Considering his stage presence, it’s little surprise that the bilingual presenter is being snapped up to emcee endless high profile events. And his sharp eye for fashion has attracted the attention of a number of brands. You have established yourself as a known presenter, but how did it all start out for you? It’s a long story! But to make it short, back in 1997 there was a casting for a kids’ show that I attended, and I have been on TV ever since. Was this always the path you had planned on taking? It’s destiny I believe, because I had the personality [for presenting] even when I was a kid. If I wasn’t doing TV or modelling, I would have been a nurse or fashion designer. How would you describe your personal style? Classic and dramatic, that’s #nouraldinstyle.

always looks classy and chic. Then there’s Alanoud Badr, who opts for young and trendy fashion. I also really like [co-founder of LAB Communications] Reem Alzarouni, and [TV presenters] Lojain Omran and Mariam Saeed. What about international celebrities? David Beckham and the model Mariano di Vaio. Looking at businesswear, what do you think is the biggest faux pas that men commit? The bow tie! I don’t get it. The majority of the time, men don’t use it properly and so it ends up looking strange. And what is the one fashion item you cannot go wrong with? I don’t think this way... it’s more about the whole look. Does it match the place? Does it match my character? Because there is a personality behind any style. Favourite fashion event? Vogue Fashion Experience. Well-organised and nicely presented. Favourite suit? I don’t go with the brand, but the cut. I’m a big fan of the Italian cut.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Style Issue

Favourite watch? Anything classic. You meet a lot of people through your work; whose style in the UAE do you admire? Unfortunately, I feel that men are rarely unique, but I do like the style of [Emirati filmmaker] Ali F Mostafa. As for women, they definitely are stylish, but not a lot stand out… except for Shereen Mitwalli, as she

Favourite fragrance? I like Arab fragrances or natural smells, such as vanilla and oud. Future plans? I’ve just been appointed the first male ambassador in the world for Natura Bisse, so I am immensely excited about that.

Nouraldin wears suit by Zara; shirt by Nodus and shoes by Loewe.

15

THE E-COMMERCE EXPERT Whose style do you admire? That’s a tricky one as I don’t really like specific styles. I like people who are individual and can express their individuality through style. Celebrity culture doesn’t mean anything to me; it’s not accessible. I’ve got far more admiration for people who don’t have much money but can still cobble a look together. That’s the ultimate sense of style and creativity.

IAN SMITH @dubrocker9

A

s Marketing Director for Namshi.com – one of the region’s biggest fashion online retailers – it’s safe to say that Ian Smith knows a thing or two about putting a look together. But for him, it’s not about being trendy, but about what works for you. That probably explains his own journey in the industry so far. “My first fashion job was running oki-ni.com,” he explains. “We were real Internet pioneers and, I still believe to this day, ahead of our time in the art of producing limited edition collaborations between amazing brands.” What inspired you to get into the fashion industry? I’ve always been interested in clothes and sneakers. I used to work during school holidays every year to get as much money as possible so I could afford that cool jacket or pair of sneakers. We used to travel from the North of England down to London – in the pre-Internet era – to

be able to pick up threads that nobody in the North had. Style was a very important element of northern culture when I was growing up. That’s stuck with me. What are your favourite looks for business? It’s very important to look good and presentable, whatever you do. [But] it’s about style rather than fashion. Essentials for big meetings are that quality pair of brogues; something by Mark McNairy or Bass Weejun to really stand out. I’d wear a bold sock that was visible between my Japanese selvedge denim and my footwear. On the top half, I’d generally wear a shirt that creates a bit of a stir. I love people’s reactions to some of the things I wear – at times people don’t have the confidence in certain environments to wear something slightly bold. I want to change those opinions – just because I’m not wearing an ill-fitting suit doesn’t mean that I don’t know how to do my job.

What is biggest style sin that men commit? Trying too hard! Fashion shouldn’t be too serious; we should all be open-minded enough to recognise and encourage individuality. It’s what inspires creativity and what drives a scene or a movement forward. Favourite watch? Uniform Wares. They create amazing timepieces, designed in London, that are really contemporary in look and feel but have a classic feel to them. What’s next for Namshi.com? Our plan is to make it the ultimate fashion destination for the 20-something customer. We believe in good-quality fashion, but without rules. We know there is a huge appetite for style in the region and we want to be that aspirational, yet affordable option.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Style Issue

Ian wears jacket by Jil Sander for Uniqlo; shirt by Our Legacy; trousers by Norse Projects; socks by Journal Standard and shoes by Grenson (seen on cover).

So if you could pick anyone to be the face of Namshi, who would it be? I would probably pick someone a little unconventional. It’s about more than fame, rather influence and attitude for the right reasons. Someone like Marion Cotillard, the French actress and singer who is an activist for Greenpeace. Audrey Tautou is someone else who would really epitomise the Namshi lifestyle – she’s young, fun and talented. To give Namshi a little edge, I’d be keen to work with Jehnny Beth, from the post-punk band Savages.

THE I N S TA PAUL RAMOS

S T Y L E

S T A R

@thestylechoreo

L

aunching his website, The Style Choreo, in March 2013, Paul Ramos was blogging before blogging became trendy in the UAE. And after gaining over 26,000 genuine followers – yes, a lot of bloggers these days buy their followers, sadly – on his Instagram account, the Abu Dhabi-based Filipino trendsetter is cementing his status as one of the best-known online personalities in luxury menswear and executive fashion.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Style Issue

We all know you from your successful blog, but how has Instagram boosted your career? It has had a really great impact on my career. We are living in the millennial modern era where each and every one of us has some form of social media. Through Instagram I have received a lot of offers, endorsements, brand collaborations and even sponsorships. So how did it all begin for you? I am a visual merchandiser by profession, so my work revolves around everything being visually perfect. Blogging was a natural progression. Through social media I am able to express my creativity and knowledge on styling, dressing up, proper product presentations and a lot more. How would you describe your own style? Edgy, dandy, corporate... actually a little bit of everything.

Paul wears suit and shirt by Brooks Brothers and shoes by Bachelor Shoes (seen on cover). Accessories by BOXKnocks and Henlein Peter; and beard oil by Organic Beard Co.

Whose sense of style do you admire? David Beckham, David Gandy and James Dean. And what is the biggest faux pas that men commit? Ill-fitting clothes. What’s the biggest no-no for businesswear? Saggy suit, baggy pants or sneakers and a backpack – don’t do it! What do you think never goes out of fashion? A navy blue or grey suit, plus brown leather accessories. Favourite suit? Hackett London, Brooks Brothers, Reiss, Next or Zara.

Favourite watch? Henlein Peter. Favourite clothing stores, either online or brick and mortar? Hackett London, Paul Smith and Mr Porter. Why do you think dressing well is important? As Tom Ford says, “Dressing well is a form of good manners”. Finally, what’s coming up for you? For the coming months there are some exciting collaborations with local and international brands. Plus, I have a project coming up with a luxury watch, as well as a brand ambassador role with a US-based shoe brand.

THE PR GURU

nity to market both our own retail stores, as well as those of some of the world’s leading luxury fashion brands. I actually joined at a very poignant time when the company was undergoing a regional expansion, opening almost 40 mono-brand and multi-band boutiques in the GCC. How did The Qode then come about? At the height of the crisis I realised that Villa Moda was unfortunately a sinking ship and started thinking about my next move. I saw a gap in the market for a PR and events company that could cater to luxury brands. [Co-founder] Dipesh [Depala] and I launched the company in early 2010 and the rest is history. What do you enjoy the most about your role? No two days are the same. Over the years we have evolved to cater to more than just fashion and beauty, taking on clients in the F&B and hospitality industry, as well as art and design, and most recently we launched our digital services. You've masterminded some brilliant events in Dubai... which one has been your favourite so far? The one that stands out the most was a dinner we did for Dolce & Gabbana which required a threeday set-up, and though it was not our largest event, it was one of the most beautiful. What are your favourite looks for business chic? I tend to take a more casual approach to business chic; in fact, I have quite an aversion to wearing a tie. I tend to mix-and-match my trousers and blazers, and accessorise with a pocket square or a lapel pin to give it that extra touch.

AYMAN FAKOUSSA @aymanfakoussa

A

sk anyone to list a reputable fashion/luxury PR company in the UAE, and chances are The Qode will be one of the first names to pop up. Managing partner Ayman Fakoussa – along with co-founder Dipesh Depala – has been responsible for giant PR campaigns and events in the UAE, including for Sephora, Berluti and Dolce & Gabbana. How did your journey in fashion PR begin? It began with my role as the marketing and PR manager of Villa Moda, the legendary multi-brand fashion destination. Through that experience I had the opportu-

How would you describe your personal style outside of work? Very casual – that is, unless we have an event or a special occasion. You work with a lot of fashion personalities in the region - whose style do you truly admire? The two people who are always looking stunning are jewellery designer and artist Nadine Kanso and couturier Rami Al Ali. I don't think I've ever seen either of them not dressed impeccably. Favourite watch? IWC – that's my next purchase. Though I've always been a fan of Cartier and Rolex timepieces as well. Favourite fragrance? Right now it’s Velvet Oud by Dolce & Gabbana.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Style Issue

Ayman wears blazer by Hugo Boss; trousers by Brave Soul/Namshi.com; shirt by Diesel Black Gold and shoes by Berluti. Accesories by Tateossian; Berluti bag, COS and Audemars Piguet.

What are business staples you cannot do without? In our industry, it’s always important to look your best, so I can’t do without good shoes or a good bag.

How would you describe your personal style? I always seem to feel most comfortable under the standard definition of a ‘dapper’ look. Shirt, tie or bow tie, blazer, trousers, socks in varying colours and with embellishments such as pocket squares, lapel pins or tie clips. Were you always fashion-conscious? This all happened after I lost in excess of 35kgs over a course of 18 months. I started to enjoy shopping, as the options become varied when you drop from a size XXL to M. Instagram [feedback] also contributed towards me making more of an effort to look

good. One highlight was when a brand ‘regrammed’ my look of the day to their over 100,000 followers. Any other cool fashion moments? Getting featured in multiple titles – Esquire, OK Middle East, Yahoo Maktoob – as one of the stylish men to look out for in the UAE. Whose style do you admire? I find it amazing when someone can rock ANY look. One particular blogger, Gyasi HL Haynes (@thesharperme), is one person that I enjoy keeping up with. It’s almost unfair how good his style is. I also have to give a shoutout to @MenswearDog who is probably better dressed than most men on the planet. What is the biggest business fashion no-no? Not understanding the basic fit of a suit. Shoulders are usually the biggest issue. Other factors include sleeve length, wrong cuff length and torso or chest spread. When it comes to the ladies, what style are you a fan of? I love the looks of women who seem to be inspired by

menswear but change it up to be more feminine. An example would be the increase of great shoes for women resembling the brogue look. I also like bright colours and patterns on vintage outfits. And what ladieswear style do you dislike? Tube dresses. Instant F. Favourite UAE fashion event? Harper’s Bazaar Arabia Best Dressed. Favourite suit? Ted Baker for special occasions. Zara for casual work wear. Favourite watch? Panerai for formal looks, and SevenFriday for some fun! Favourite fragrance? I’ve been wearing Acqua Di Gio since high school. No other fragrance has come close for me. What’s the next luxury item on your wish-list? I am definitely looking to invest in a herringbone double-breasted check suit. Preferably somewhere along the lines of a dark grey or brown. I also really want a pair of Awl & Sundry Monkstrap shoes.

ANDY SCOTT @andy_scott_uk

O

ne of the newer names on the UAE fashion scene, Brit Andy Scott is definitely one to watch. Before moving to Dubai three years ago, Andy was in the United States thanks to a football scholarship that he earned when 17. Now in his late twenties, the model and promoter – who has lived in Dubai for the past three years – is also a lifestyle blogger. Andy Scott Fashion aims to, as he puts it, “inspire other gents out there and promote what’s hot in the city.” What inspired you to get into the menswear industry and start a blog? I was modelling and going to events and wanted to be on the other side of the industry. I found a niche in the market as I realised there were not many male bloggers at the time. How would you describe your personal style? A street-styled gentleman, ha! And whose style do you admire? [The Gentleman Blogger founder] @matthewzorpas. What is the biggest style sin at the moment? Suits that are not the correct size. Or brown shoes with a black suit – drives me mad! Who, in your opinion, is a champion of individuality in the UAE? My fellow dapper brothers @thestylechoreo and @smfblog. How has your blog helped your career? It has led to me being able to collaborate with numerous brands and helped me travel, eat and visit some amazing places.

Favourite suit? Pal Zileri. Favourite watch? Daniel Wellington. What’s next for you? I am going to be travelling a lot more this year. There are also some collaborations with some larger brands in the pipeline.

Andy wears bespoke suit; shirt by Reiss; shoes by Paul Evans NY. Accessories by Antoni Manuel.

And what has been your greatest fashion moment to date? Being one of Esquire’s Best Dressed for 2015.

“THE GYM KEEPS ME CALM”

A DAY IN MY LIFE 5:45am Wake up! Jump out of bed, pack my gym bag, feed the girls (two cats) and head out to gym. 9:00am Pop in at the office, depending on what's on for the day, but coffee and breakfast are always the first call of the day, whether it's at my desk or at the first meeting. Often the day starts at either Urban Bistro or Souk Madinat Jumeirah for meetings and catching up with the client. 10:30am I always try to block at least 45 minutes in the morning to go through mails after the early meetings.

bout me: I am the founder and MD of Think Liquorice, and a part-time TV presenter and event host. Think Liquorice is a boutique agency that looks to grow and build food, lifestyle and fashion brands in the region, as well as look after leading sports and lifestyle personalities like Megan Hess. This month is one of the busiest in Dubai while we all try and make the most of the Spring season. I’m super excited to be shooting for the South African National Broadcaster, for a TV travel special that will also see my wedding appear both in the Middle East and South Africa – sort of another chance to experience it. I have loads of exciting client events and without wedding planning for the first month in a long time, I get to delve into new and exciting projects, as well as honeymoon planning!

THIS MONTH, I’M LOVING

B E YO N D B U S I N E S S

That I’m a Mrs! I got married at the end of March and I love the new title. I’m still floating on a cloud a little after the amazing week with family and friends, and am having to pinch myself about how fortunate we were to have a week-long wedding with so many of our favorite people. We got to show off the country we call home with a desert safari, experiences on a yacht and golf course, and of course the wedding and World Cup. We created unforgettable memories for life!

In my free time, I like to gym... or shop! The latter is usually more damaging. I find gym is the one hour or so in the day where I get to really let off steam. Through the busiest periods gym and training has kept me fresh and calm. Exercise has become trendy and a bit of a semi-glam industry but it makes a huge impact on mental well-being and happiness. I really look forward to my morning training with or without a coach – as it lengthens my day and helps me start it energised!

① Laptop: My entire world operates on this machine. My company started and runs off it. ② iPhone WITH charging block: This can never be too far away from me! I run my business off my phone at times and the battery just can’t keep up. It’s also my camera, photo editor and social media ‘dashboard’. ③ My kikki.K Planner: I’m a little old school like that and love writing things down. I do have meetings and info on my phone but love stationery! ④ Coins: To park in Media City! Since changing to an Abu Dhabi plate, this has been a must! ⑤ Dropbox: We work daily with artwork and images, and some of our team are not always based in the same country – so this allows us to function, share and connect on all the important things.

12:01pm Lunch-time! Many of our clients are food and beverage outlets and we spend a lot of time in their venues, getting to know the brand as well as being around for content and pic opportunities. 1:00pm Pop into Designer 24 to select something for events or a shoot. 1:30pm Marketing status meeting with a client. 2:50pm Client food tasting for menu changes/inclusions. 4pm In studio at Physique TV to present, What's Up 7:30pm Home, quick change for the night's event. There are many times I don't have the time to head home and day to night changes have to be done in bathrooms and the back seat of the car. 9pm Dubai is amazing in that its calendar of things to do is so full – while I love trying to get to as many events as possible, but some nights I do just stay home and work through to catch up on strategy work, or brand plans.

BEYOND BUSINESS

DRESSING THE PART Every issue EL meets one of the GCC’s top business personalities to find out more about their career and life outside of the workplace

First of all, tell us a little more about your day job. At Meltwater, we encourage an entrepreneurial environment, thus my role is to facilitate the growth [of the company] across all three continents. This is a combination of strategy, developing future leaders and cultivating a strong commercial game plan. Our company culture covers fun, winners and respect; these values are essential across the region.

ZUBAIR TIMOL

EXECUTIVE LIFE|About Town

Partner and Area Director for India, Middle East & Africa at Meltwater

Apart from his corporate role at the global media intelligence solutions firm, Zubair is also a bit of a fashion entrepreneur. The Dubai-based executive has set-up a number of businesses with interests including design, event management and fashion. His most recent project is Velsvoir, a luxury menswear brand set up with his two brothers in Dubai.

Being the EL Style Issue, we want to know more about Velsvoir, of course. Velsvoir is a hobby that started through a family bond at my wedding. As three brothers, we wanted to wear a bow tie that was vintage in feel and luxurious in texture. We couldn’t find one, so we designed a piece and a few tweets later from my brother Talha, we accidentally developed a design brand which has evolved into a menswear line with shows at London Collections: Men and Dubai’s Fashion Forward. At present we have customers from over 15 countries. How do you balance the two? Meltwater is my main focus and priority, and therefore having a talented management team, a clear vision and goals is imperative. Aside from this, the virtue of hard work enables me to balance my day to day with Velsvoir, which is primarily run by my two talented brothers Talha and Zak.

“WE WANTED TO WEAR A BOW TIE THAT WAS VINTAGE IN FEEL AND LUXURIOUS IN TEXTURE.”

At the gym: radio, playlist or podcast? I like high tempo, at this moment in time… Calvin Harris is a constant fixture on my playlist. Occasionally peppered with a hint of Nancy Ajram. What about hobbies? Health and wellness are a big passion for me. Alongside boxing and Bikram yoga, I have recently taken up movement training, which is a key feature amongst MMA athletes. Living in Dubai, new restaurants are a constant feature; Bagatelle is a current favourite for its food and atmosphere. For a change of scenery, Omnia Gourmet is a relaxing way to enjoy a weekend lunch full of organic, local goodness. What’s a good café or lounge for business meetings? Media One Hotel has the right balance of privacy and openness. What is the one gadget that you cannot live without during business hours? Not really sure if this qualifies as a gadget but

the one essential is my portable power pack. The days of anguish, when your phone battery would inch closer to 0% as you were on an important call, are gladly few and far between. Do you have time to travel? I am fortunate to travel on regular basis. I find the experience of being on a plane oddly calming. It is an opportunity to reflect, as you enter a new city with its own culture and social eco-system. I make a point of running every city I visit, which is over 60 to date. Are there any destinations you haven’t been to that you would love to visit? Baku in Azerbaijan has always intrigued me. The lifestyle, art and architecture seem distinct; it has the potential to be an adventure! Do you make time for mini-breaks in the UAE? Yes, give Sir Bani Yas Island a try - beautiful in nature and it is on our doorstep. For the ‘GQ crowd’, Zaya Nurai Island in Abu Dhabi is an homage to all things design. Finally, apart from Velsvoir, who are your favourite designers for business wear? Dolce & Gabbana are a staple; I generally prefer clean lines and slim aesthetics; The Kooples and Tiger of Sweden are brands that enable a business traveller to switch from boardroom to a relaxed social, with minimal fuss. For more information, visit velsvoir.com.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|About Town

How do you start off your morning? I will hit the gym bright and early – getting the adrenaline pumping is a good start to the day. Thereafter, I will prioritise my day based on the tasks at hand; working across multiple time-zones means I need to have clear map of the day ahead.

erations team run the restaurant from a food and beverage point of view. Then we run into the afternoon and that’s when I really pack in the meetings, making sure that we are meeting with new event companies that are coming into town, people that are looking to utilise the space for creative workshops, art- and design-related events or even for cocktail receptions. We then lead into the evening and that’s when the dinner service comes in. I like to see the first part of dinner service; again, it’s about meeting and greeting the guests at the entrance, talking to them, interacting with them and telling them what the space is all about, without overwhelming them. Mark Ronson’s presence at our opening party was fantastic. [The international DJ and producer] is a very cool, self-composed but downto-earth sort of person. He really fitted in with our concept and made one of those great additions to the evening. Who else would I like to see in Intersect by Lexus? There are many people that I would love to see, but we have a few plans over the next 10 months leading up to our one-year anniversary, so there are a few names we are working on.

MY WORKPLACE

EXECUTIVE LIFE|At The Office

EL meets Benjamin Nicholas, general manager of Intersect by Lexus, one of DIFC’s most stylish new hangouts. Here, he tells us more about his role and his favourite perks of the industry

My role: As the GM of Intersect by Lexus it’s very much overseeing all operations. I was brought in to this project due to over 15 years of experience in the hospitality sector. I am here to drive a new lifestyle initiative by Lexus and that runs through a unique space concept offering the brand’s unique perspective of food, beverage, atmosphere, service and hospitality in general. A typical day in my life: Starts early in the morning, as I like to get in around 8am or 9am to welcome the first few guests. I like to see how the coffee is being prepared, how the freshly baked croissants are being presented, etc. It’s about making sure that you offer a personalised welcome to every guest that comes into the space. I spend the majority of my time during lunch service within the restaurant meeting and greeting the guests at the entrance. Generally, I like to give individual tours around the space, telling guests all the stories behind each element in the space, and I let my op-

If I could name three unique things about my workplace: I will start off with the cars. I wouldn’t say I am a car specialist, but working within automotive and having a concept car in our garage or events space is a unique thing, it’s just a great visual impact. It’s one of the things that I enjoy talking about, what the vehicle is and what it does represent. I don’t know anything about the engines, but it’s about that beauty and how it looks. Another thing that I really like about my workspace is the coffee in the morning. The organic coffee we have here is really great; it’s supplied by the RAW roastery here in the UAE. It has opened my eyes to what coffee is really all about. The final thing is the library itself. It’s a very relaxed, homely, comfortable sort of space. It makes my day and my team’s job of relaxing people so much easier, because it is such a great space to work in, relax in, have great ideas in and come up with some new concepts to bring and showcase within the space. My workplace focuses on design and style: It is a real representation of creativity. I think Masamichi Katayama – the world-renowned interior designer and founder of the interi-

Hungry? I recommend a couple of favourite dishes. From the small plates, I would say the Portuguese octopus is fantastic. I hadn’t eaten much octopus until this project started, but this dish is really enjoyable. As for the larger plates, the dish that stands out for me is the 36-hour cooked beef short ribs. The way the meat just falls off and crumbles with a nice, rich flavour is delightful. It’s also just enough that you don’t feel stuffed, but you feel satisfied. It has such a great flavour. My top three must-haves for business are: Passion, drive and commitment. The reason

why is that you’ve got to enjoy what you are doing, you’ve got to believe in what you are doing, and you’ve got to make sure you are not worried about making the wrong choice or the right choice – but you have to make a choice. If it is the wrong choice, you learn from that and you move forward. You’ve got to continually push yourself, otherwise you will never achieve anything in business. Phone or email? Emails are things that people send that sometimes don’t get interpreted correctly, so I would always use the phone. I think it is better to speak to people directly; things can be activated very quickly. It’s that personal touch. With email I find you are a bit disconnected, but with a phone you’ve always got that time, and decisions can be made or thought of very quickly. Look out for: Our [newly launched] brunch. We are trying to be a very much relaxed space, and we have a live jazz singer duo that really contributes to the ambience.

MARK RONSON AT THE LAUNCH

ORGANIC COFFEE

Coming up this year: For me, it’s about developing and bringing Intersect by Lexus into Dubai a lot more than than it [currently] is. We are still young in the market, so [there’s lots] of potential. We have new initiatives – like our brunch – but it’s about putting [us] on the map and making sure that we are known as that creative design, fun space that people can come to, relax in and enjoy. For more information, visit lexus.ae.

or design firm WonderWall – did a beautiful job with this space. He really mixed that relaxed atmosphere with a design focus. A lot of people that come into the space are ‘wowed’ with the first exposure of the details, but also with the quality and the finish of the space. One of the big things that stands out for me is the desert dune-inspired ceiling that runs across the library and eatery of the venue on the first floor. It’s a beautiful representation of the Middle East in a design focus. Also, the spindle grill design that decorates the façade of the space is the same one that Lexus has on the front of its cars. Masamichi Katayama managed to have it represented in a beautiful mosaic on the outside that goes around the building. It is made from the same bamboo that we use in our cars. When you hear the story about the design you think it’s very clever and very imaginative.

Having debuted at the 2015 Dubai International Motor Show in November, the 650S Spider Al Sahara 79 is pretty much the centrepiece of McLaren’s showroom in the UAE. Created exclusively for the Middle East, this model has been inspired by the region, with the pearlescent white gold paintwork created thanks to the addition of 24-carat gold particles to the finish. Contrasting detailing on the exterior of the car includes a retractable hard top and lightweight forged alloy wheels finished in gloss black, while carbon fibre is used for the side intakes, front splitter and rear diffuser. The aggressive, carbon fibre MSO-branded Side Blades provide a more purposeful and sculpted appearance.

A fully custom-zoned interior features black and white leather upholstered sports seats with contrasting stitching, with the paint scheme carried through to the steering wheel, centre console and door panels. Power comes from the multi-award-winning mid-mounted 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 engine seen in the 650S Coupe and 650S Spider, producing 650 hp at 7,250rpm and 678 Nm of torque. Performance remains unchanged, with zero to 100km/h reached in 3 seconds, and a top speed of 329 km/h. This new model comes equipped with the latest evolution of the Maserati 3-litre V6 engine, globally acclaimed for its signature sound and exceptional performance. It’s available in two versions: versions: in top-of-the-range 430 hp form or with 350 hp. The most powerful Levante makes it to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of 264 km/h, while the figures for the 350 hp version are 6.0 seconds and 251 km/h respectively. Cadlillac is extending the top of its range with the 2017 CT6 sedan, which is set to arrive at the region’s Cadillac showrooms this summer. The Middle East will initially receive two engine choices, both coupled to a state-of-the-art GM-built 8-speed transmission and standard All Wheel Drive. Meanwhile, taking drivers to a higher threshold of involvement, the CT6 is fitted with technologies to enhance situational awareness, and with chassis systems – including active technologies – that make the most of control in all conditions, and powertrains led by an all-new Cadillac Twin Turbo engine. The 3.0-litre unit is rated at 400

horsepower and 543 Nm of torque; an all-new, 335 hp 3.6-litre V6 is also available. The rigid, lightweight architecture provides a crucial foundation for the sedan’s segment-challenging agility, enhanced by active-on-demand all-wheel drive, active rear steering and Magnetic Ride Control with the available Active Chassis System. MASERATI LEVANTE

The Levante is a turning point in Maserati’s history. The luxury SUV, which made its world premiere at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, has now arrived in the UAE. Explains Hossam Hosni, General Manager of Luxury Auto at Al Tayer Motors: “This is the first ever SUV by Maserati, so it is a complete game-changer, particularly for the UAE. Maserati is renowned for exotic sports cars, so our mission was not just to build an SUV, but to build a Maserati. Exciting times are ahead and we are glad to be able to offer Maserati aficionados a completely new experience.” Available from July, the Levante is based on the evolution of the sedan platform, with the car chassis specif-

ow in its second generation, the Volvo XC90 has been a reliable, mid-size luxury crossover SUV since it was first introduced in 2002. But this year sees the model getting a trendy makeover with the launch of the sportier R-Design version. Specifically aimed at buyers looking for the reliability and quality associated with the Swedish brand – but with an edgier look – it seems that this version is already going down well with GCC customers. “There’s a lot of demand for this model,” a Volvo sales rep told us at the Dubai Festival City showroom, adding that the ultra luxurious element of the vehicle added to its appeal. So is it worth the switch? On first glance, it is certainly a highly impressive motor. With a visually striking exterior couple to power, safety features and advanced technology, the XC90 R-Design will definitely appeal to someone looking for a powerful model with 4WD capabilities. “The R-Design is created for people looking for that little bit extra,” explained Mohammed Maktari, managing director of Trading Enterprises. “It appeals to [those who] love active driving and a personal, expressive design.”

THE CAR Looking at the exterior, the R-Design is set apart from its more toned-down counterparts thanks to distinguishing features, such as the unique grille and front spoiler, along with a ‘silk metal’ window trim, integrated dual tailpipes and bright roof rails. The standard model

comes with 20-inch R-Design alloy wheels. An optional upgrade to 22-inch wheels is available. Inside, the biggest stand-outs are the sporty leather seats, which are accompanied by upgraded ‘R-Design details’ such as gearshift knob, pedals, floor mats and illuminated tread plates. We absolutely love the dashboard, which is blacked out when the car is not running. The speedometer, fuel gauge and more illuminate instantly upon starting the engine.

AT THE WHEEL As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of SUVs, I did find the movement a little jumpy at first. It also comes with quite a big blind spot, so you do have to rely on the sensors on your right indicator when switching lanes, which personally, I am not a fan of – I like seeing the cars coming my way! It’s safe to say that the XC90 R-Design is at its best at the higher end of the speed spectrum; it’s a very smooth drive at velocities of 90 to 120km/h.

TECHNOLOGY Without doubt it's the area of technology in which this car really excels. Although the dashboard screen for media, GPS and so forth is a little fiddly at first – and certainly not recommended to use while on the road – there are certain elements that were very impressive. The GPS is spot on, while the speedometer has a nifty little feature where it indicates the speed limit of the road you are on, as well as warning of any speed cameras that are coming up.

Iwan Maktabi is the leading high-end rug retailer in Lebanon and the region, and has just launched in Dubai. EL spoke to Mohamed Maktabi to find out what’s hot for 2016

Deeply rooted in the carpet industry for decades, Iwan Maktabi’s name has become synonymous with fine art. Founded in Beirut in 1985, Maktabi’s continuous commitment to quality, innovation and creativity has enabled the gallery to quickly acquire the reputation of market leader, both in antique and contemporary design carpets. Iwan Maktabi recently launched its newest outpost store in The Dubai Mall, a real art gallery that offers high-quality contempo-

rary carpets by international award-winning designers in an exquisite setting. The showroom features a fully equipped design studio where a wide range of patterns, colours and high quality materials has also been created, offering customers a professional in-house tailored service to design their own unique carpet based on size, design and colours – fully bepoke. For those yet to discover your brand in the UAE, tell us a little more about Iwan Maktabi. We’re the third generation of the Maktabi family that is dedicated to the carpet business. My grandfather initially immigrated to Lebanon in the 1920s, my father after him continued the family business, and in the 1980s and my sisters and I started the

“OLD CALLIGRAPHY FROM MY FATHER’S COLLECTION, OR AN IMAGE FROM MY SCHOOL DAYS CAN BE AN INSPIRATION FOR A CARPET” Iwan Maktabi concept. The Maktabi name has become synonymous with quality handmade carpets in the region and the world. Our brand is focused on taking advantage of age-old traditions and knowledge to push the hand-made carpet industry further and guide it into a viable future. Our galleries cater to many tastes – our stock covers antique and collectable carpets, traditional fine silk city carpets, as well as new innovations by famous carpet designers and artists.

How is your design process born and how does it unravel to create these unique designs? Even though I like to try new things, I find myself always inspired by things close to me. So an old calligraphy from my father’s collection, or an image from my school days can simply be an inspiration for a carpet. Do you have any favourite techniques? I like knotted carpets, but I like to mix precious materials. So wool is mixed with silk. Or silk is mixed with Mongolian cashmere or pashmina…. What elements of the home should a buyer consider when choosing a carpet? I always like to know which room the carpet is for. Is it a social space or a private one? Is it for high-traffic or low-traffic areas? Then we move into more details: what is the style of the house? Is it classical or contemporary?

Is it eclectic or neo-classical? All this information can help us when choosing a carpet for a specific room.

age-old knots and natural vegetable dyes! His designs are available for sale at our store.

Which home suits conventional designs – and which home suits contemporary ones? While I am tempted to say that a classical carpet fits a conventional home, and a modern one will fit perfectly in a contemporary interior, there are no more rules in decorating one’s home. Mixing and matching can be the way to go, and the eclectic personal look can give a wide array of possibilities. What colours/trends are hot for 2016/17? We are finally moving away from greys. Ice blue and golden orange hues are making their way. And which other carpet designs - other than your own - that you really admire? I especially admire the Erased Heritage collection conceived by Jan Kath, the world-renowned carpet designer. In it, he succeeded in mixing the traditional weave and designs with amazing contemporary-looking silk layers. All this while respecting the traditional way of hand-spinning wool and silk,

You recently presented a One Carpet for Love collection at Design Days Dubai. What made you come up with that? This initiative started with the idea to give back to society through our own line of work. We approached designers and artists in various fields of design and asked them to come up with any design or concept they wished us to make in carpet form. We had 10 final ideas, and it was like creating 10 different carpet collections, since each concept was completely different from the other. The carpets will be produced in limited editions of five pieces only, and the first edition will go to charity. We are giving our client the choice of the charitable organisation they like to donate to! What else is coming up for you in 2016? We are getting inspired by contemporary works of art to produce carpets that look like works of art on canvas but still can be used as floor covering in all types of interiors. All this while introducing new colours and textures.

EXECUTIVE LIFE|At Home

How did your journey as a carpet designer begin? Moving into design was a necessity somehow. With our weavers asking for more carpet orders, to stay in the weaving business and not move to another more lucrative job I found myself trying new ideas and giving them new directions. I tapped into all the information I had from our various clients (architects, interior decorators, art collectors…) and came up with new experimental ideas. The carpet business has been changing gradually, and we started working with other designers who were creating exciting things with carpets. Our clients’ reactions were very helpful. They were happy with what we had to offer: a new look in carpet, but with the same emphasis on quality and tradition as the old, more classical carpets.

Dubai-based fitness guru Rania Gamal gives EL her top five tips on how to balance keeping fit with a hectic work life

Wake up at least three hours before your work time: ”If there is one common thing among CEOs and successful people, they all wake up early. If your office timing is 9am, don’t wake up at 8am and rush to the shower as whatever you do, you’ll still be late for work. You wouldn’t have a healthy breakfast either. It is important to give yourself a grace period of three hours before your office timing, aside from the travel time that you have, meaning if your travel time is one hour, you need four hours in advance. Why? Because you need one hour to exercise so you have a stronger body, 30 minutes to prepare a healthy breakfast and not those easy-to-cook frozen, ready-to-fry and any food with preservatives, 30 minutes to eat, 30 minutes to shower and get dressed and 30 minutes to read or watch some news. It is very important to do all of these – exercise, eat healthy, read and enrich your knowledge

right amount of protein and carbohydrates rather than buying ‘dietary’ products in the supermarket – except from the honest brands that I have studied and I really trust. Mind your own business: Don’t be envious of ‘Sarah’ if she has a slimmer body, or get jealous of ‘Wafa’ because they have abs, for instance. You don’t have to focus on what others have and what are they doing; except focus on how would you improve yourself and how would you reach that goal of being and fit and healthy.

3 4

Open your eyes to the truth: “Sometimes you should know how to classify truth from advertising. Just because you heard that a certain slimming tablet made your friend slim doesn’t mean it will be effective for you. First of all, we have different blood and body types, and therefore something that works for others may not work for you and vice versa. Also look out for labels - just because you see the package of a tantalising-looking juice drink claim that there is no added sugar doesn’t mean it has no sugar, or just because it is under the diet section doesn’t mean it will be healthy for you. I believe in natural things such as fruits and vegetables and the

2

Keep going! Never ever stop, that is the main and most important thing that you should learn when you are on the journey of physical fitness. You have to be strong emotionally inside, to be able to fight the battles and challenges that you have outside. You may think it is a cliché, but it is really true that the beginning is the hardest – but it doesn’t matter, what matters is that you push yourself, you fight your demons inside and you show yourself that you are stronger each day than yourself yesterday — and that you keep on going.

every morning. Remember your work is not your life, it is just a part of it, but your body and mind is all part of your existence.”

All aspects of diet and fitness matter: “When it comes to losing weight and being fit, everything matters; you cannot go to the gym regularly and eat buffet everyday or grab fast food after a sweat of just 30 minutes on the treadmill. You also cannot skip lunch and stay at couch every night or every morning. Fitness is the right amount of balance of everything, healthy eating and regular exercise, and the good news is you don’t need to force yourself to do rigorous exercise or not eat carbohydrates on your first few weeks – you can start by little dietary programmes and try to challenge yourself for a harder exercise and lessen carbohydrates gradually as it is much more effective that way.”

SENARA

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Time Out

Palm Views West, Dubai The restaurant: Senara is the Arabic word for ‘fishing rod’, so it is hardly surprising that this new homegrown concept specialises in the freshest fish and seafood. But while you may be expecting Arab specialities, dishes here are in fact authentically British. The menu: With head chef Anthony Reilly at the helm, the menu is full of pescetarian-friendly dishes. But there are also meat and veggie options. What we ordered: Fried calamari, smoked haddock and clam chowder, grilled seabass with spinach, special of the day of herb-crusted swordfish. What’s right with it: First of all, I loved the fact that it was overlooking the marina, and so the outdoor seating area is lovely. The indoor area looks very

cool... I like the all-wood finish, which gives it rustic appeal. Look out for the fish basket lighting – it really suits the place. As for the food, I was thoroughly impressed. The clam chowder was perfectly salted, while the bread roll on top was a nice touch. As for the main course, it was a little big for my liking, so I couldn’t finish it, but considering we were sitting outside it still arrived perfectly warm. Presentation-wise, dishes were very impressive. And the spinach side was perfect. What’s wrong with it: It’s a little difficult to find. So I guess they need to clarify their address online. Total bill: AED 600 for two Rating: 4/5 Info: Open daily from 11am until midnight. Reserve on 04 451 6460.

Bistro Des Arts Dubai Marina Promenade The restaurant: Dubbed as a quintessential 1970s-style Parisian bistro, Bistro des Arts is the latest high-end eatery to arrive in the popular Dubai Marina Promenade area. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, making it a perfect date night spot or venue for after-work dining. The menu: Pretty straightforward, the menu features Parisienne bistro fare. There's also a large selection of beverages. What we ordered: Gratinated French onion soup, creamy lobster bisque, SaintJacques (sea scallops with leek fondue and Hollandaise sauce), Le Coquelet Roti (roasted baby chicken with fries and mixed leaves), Moelleux Toblerone. What’s right with it: First of all, while the restaurant is tucked away, you can still enjoy the views of the Marina, so make sure you have the right table. As for the food, the ultimate highlight

for me was the dessert. The molten chocolate element of the Toblerone dish went really well with the pistachio ice cream. I'll definitely be coming back for coffee and dessert. The mains were good – while the scallops with Hollandaise sauce were presented really well, they were a little rich for my liking, while the lobster bisque was on the saltier side. But to be fair, that dish really does vary from restaurant to restaurant. My guest really enjoyed their French onion soup. What’s wrong with it: While the staff were very friendly, our service was a little odd. It felt at times that there was too much of a focus on recommending dishes without really listening to what we were looking for. I would recommend that staff members focus on what the diner likes/dislikes before recommending a dish or drink. Total bill: AED 375 for two Rating: 3.5/5 Info: Open daily from 7.30am until 11pm. Reserve on 04 551 1576.

Where? InterContinental Festival City Indulge in the ultimate Parisian culinary experience with signature scones, pastries and mini sandwiches, accompanied by the finest tea selection. Dubai International Airport’s new Concourse D at Terminal 1 has finally opened. Here’s your handy guide to DXB’s brand new offering

A

s if Dubai’s airport couldn’t get any bigger, it has just gone and opened a new area at Terminal 1. Spearheaded by Emirates Leisure Retail (ELR) and Maritime & Mercantile International (MMI), seven new dining and retail offerings have debuted at Dubai International Airport’s new Concourse D at Terminal 1. Both ELR and MMI – which are subsidiaries of the Emirates Group – worked in close collaboration with partners to deliver these new concepts, explained Kevin Zajax, Chief Commercial Officer of ELR. “Our aim is simple – to delight and excite travellers with world-class F&B and retail experiences. At Concourse D, we have some new partnerships and we are delighted to be bringing Pret A Manger to the region, as well as being selected to work with chef and restaurateur Wolfgang Puck for our first opening together. “We are sure passengers will be excited by the culinary offerings at Concourse D and we are proud to continue to work with Dubai Airports in, once again, raising the bar and enhancing guest experiences.” Here’s a look at the new launches, with some outlets even making their first appearance in the region.

PRET A MANGER The British brand – known for its organic coffee and soups and sandwiches that are freshly prepared on site – finally brings its first outlet to the region.

THE KITCHEN BY WOLFGANG PUCK Another first for the GCC; Puck serves his most popular dishes in a contemporary, casual setting, offering travellers a grab-and-go deli counter as well as seated dining.

THE DRAFT HOUSE This first-of-its kind sports bar features a US, vintage-inspired, collegiate theme that also takes cues from Irish heritage. Multiple television screens deliver 24/7 sporting coverage from across the globe, while the venue also boasts a stunning view of the runway.

CHECK-IN: PALAZZO VERSACE DUBAI

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Business Class

The Italian luxury brand recently launched its first hotel in the UAE and, naturally, everything from the dĂŠcor to the bedding is pure Versace | Jessica Williams

HIGHLIGHTS

Things to see and do

AT A G L A N C E Located in the new Culture Village area, Palazzo Versace is about a 15-minute drive away from Dubai International Airport, in a convenient district that isn’t far from Dubai Festival City and the Downtown Dubai area. Upon arrival you cannot help but notice just how expensive everything feels – from the guests’ Maserati and Lamborghini cars parked outside the entrance, to the grand lobby area where everything from the marble flooring to the décor and ornaments is pure Versace. Check-in at the reception is efficient, with the friendly staff – all clad in Versace, of course – on hand to offer further information on the hotel, its outlets or leisure options.

ROOMS But the Italian design doesn’t stop there. All 150 rooms and 65 suites are furnished with the Versace Home Collection that features the brand’s distinctive colours of turquoise, blue, beige, gold and salmon. Meanwhile, plenty of natural light illuminates the rooms and suites that offer views of either the Dubai Creek or Culture Village. Bathrooms feature handcrafted mosaic and Carrara marble tiling, which make for a beautiful backdrop to the walk-in rainforest shower. We stayed in the Deluxe Room, a spacious and elegant Queen-size twin-bed room with balcony, designer toiletries, coffee and teamaking offerings and mini-bar.

ESSENTIALS Getting there: This hotel, which is a 15-minute drive from Dubai International Airport, is close to Dubai Festival City and the Downtown Dubai areas. Nearby landmarks include The Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa. Location: Culture Village, Bur Dubai, Dubai Prices: This month, rooms start from AED 1,540 per night Booking info: palazzoversace.ae

MOSAICO LOBBY LOUNGE Palazzo Versace’s lobby lounge offers splendid views of the Dubai Creek and main swimming pool, thank to its high floor-to-ceiling windows. The all-day menu features plenty of options for snacks, lunch and dinner. Look out for the beautiful Versace mosaic floor detail.

ISCHIA: MAIN HOTEL SWIMMING POOL

LEISURE If you’re looking for a quick staycation, you really won’t need to leave the Palazzo Versace, as everything you need is pretty much available. Along with a 24-hour gym, there’s V SPA, which offers spa and relaxation services for both men and women. When the weather is nice, guests can take advantage of three swimming pools – which includes one for adults only. The one thing we didn’t like here is the fact that you had to walk through the Mosaico Lobby Lounge to get to the swimming pool. There’s something oddly uncomfortable about walking around in a pool robe amongst guests having a business meeting or afternoon tea at the lounge. For a bite to eat during the evening, one thing I am always never able to resist when staying in a hotel is room service. And let me let you in on a secret – to measure consistency, I stick to ordering the same dish wherever I am staying – for me, that dish is a classic cheeseburger and fries. The one served up at Palazzo Versace was possibly the best burger I have ever had in my life. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection and smothered in rich cheddar cheese. The salad was fresh, crisp and colourful. From the impeccable rooms to the impressive service, if Palazzo Versace continues to operate the way it is doing now, then we predict it will fast cement itself as a leading luxury choice for travellers.

The hotel is home to three swimming pools: Capri (the central lagoon pool), Portofino (the western lagoon pool) and Ischia (pictured above), which is considered the main pool area of the hotel. Drinks and snacks, plus private cabanas, are available throughout the day.

GIARDINO Offering breakfast as well as an international brunch every Friday, Giardino features an eclectic mix of international favourites, including Arabic, Chinese, Indian and Italian cuisines. A lot of Versace design is here as well, with exotic mosaic patterns adorning the walls.

ENIGMA This avant-garde restaurant is more about the experience than the meal itself. Enigma’s menu will be changed every few months, with a new Michelin star chef taking the helm. The next chef coming up is Sweden’s Björn Frantzén.

onsidering Dubai’s appeal to the rich and the famous, it was only a matter of time before a completely spectacular and over-the-top hotel launched in the city to – dare we say it? – rival the likes of the Burj Al Arab or the beautiful resorts on the Palm Jumeirah. And surprise, surprise – it is one of Italy’s most iconic luxury designer brands that is behind Dubai’s latest luxury hotel launch; the House of Versace to be precise. Still in its soft launch phase, Palazzo Versace (which translates into ‘Versace Palace’) is everything you would expect it to be and more. While it’s an obvious choice for a luxurious getaway, this five-star property would also be suitable for business events, as well as an accommodation option for business clients you really want to impress.

BUSINESS IN AL BARSHA This Dubai district, close to Mall of the Emirates and Dubai Media City, is something of a hub of businessfriendly hotels. EL headed there to find out the options on offer Rachel McArthur & Jesscia Williams

Hilton Garden Inn Dubai Mall of The Emirates Star Rating: **** Best for: Ultimate convenience

EXECUTIVE LIFE|Business Class

One of the newest kids on the block, Hilton Garden Inn Dubai Mall of the Emirates recently celebrated its official launch, and it’s fast becoming one of Al Barsha’s most booked properties. Obviously, the Hilton brand no doubt brings in business; however, when it comes to convenience, this is where the hotel truly excels. Situated a stone’s throw away from Mall of the Emirates, the building’s location is easy to find – and is away from the roads that attract traffic during rush hour – plus there’s plenty of parking and a valet service. The four-star hotel is also home to a number of excellent meeting rooms.

Best features: That ‘new’ feeling to the spacious rooms. Plus, we loved the convenience of a ‘Grab n Go’-style snack shop that’s open 24 hours.

an outside view actually offer a view of the outdoor pool, which would be okay if the pool wasn’t right in the centre on the first floor. This means that if you are staying on the first floor – like we were – you didn’t get any sunlight, and in the evenings you couldn’t keep your curtains open; otherwise everyone in the pool area could see you.

Sleep quality: Superb. Lovely soft mattress and pillows.

What business travellers are saying online: “The staff were very friendly, and it makes all the difference when they know your name as you walk up to them. Great breakfast selection; freshly baked croissants !” – AC, Booking.com “Stayed for several weeks during a business trip and would describe my visit as amazingly pleasant. The staff have been amazing and extremely helpful.” – Keltoum, TripAdvisor.com

3 MORE TO TRY

Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates Star Rating: ***** Best for: Impressing a client If you want to go all-out for a client who is visiting, then Kempinski Mall of the Emirates is a top contender. Attached to one of Dubai’s most popular malls, rooms offer great views of either Sheikh Zayed Road or Burj Al Arab, or of Ski Dubai, giving the bedroom a real ski chalet vibe. Novotel Dubai Al Barsha

Adagio Premium Dubai Al Barsha

When hosting clients for longer periods of time, it makes sense to opt for an apartment rather than a hotel. After all, it offers more of a homely experience, not to mention a bigger space. It’s also very convenient for business travellers flying in with a spouse, for example. Located a mere five-minute drive from Mall of the Emirates, Adagio Premium Dubai Al Barsha offers modern accommodation, along with facilities such as a dining area and full kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine, hairdryer and toiletries. There’s also a spa, gym and outdoor pool, along with food and beverage options, including room service.

Best features: The living room and connecting kitchen. In fact, we wish we had an apartment that was this spacious. Since the apartments are self-catering, there’s a fridge-freezer, microwave and plenty of cutlery and crockery. The living room is very homely and the sofa is comfortable.

But we weren’t a fan of: Two things. First up is the tricky parking. In order to gain access to the parking lot, you need to check in to obtain a pass. During this process, however, there’s nowhere to leave your car – meaning you have to park quite far away beforehand, which doesn’t make sense. Then there was the view. If booking, make sure you get a view of Sheikh Zayed Road, as the view of our apartment was of the back alley. Boring and uninspiring. Sleep quality: Excellent. Comfortable beds and quiet surroundings. What business travellers are saying online: “Clean and comfortable with a full range of amenities in the apartment. House keeping guys quick and efficient.” – Ashish, Booking.com “Very nice and big apartment; it was also very clean and the Wi-Fi works very well. Swimming pool was nice.” – Carlos G, TripAdvisor.com

ate last month, Christie’s celebrated its 10th anniversary in Dubai with a series of sales across three days that realised more than AED 59 million ($15,966,840). The fine arts auction house’s commitment to the region has included investing in a team of specialists, plus a network of regional consultants, to help nurture what has become a truly international marketplace. “As the auctioneer at our very first sale here in 2006, I remember feeling we had made a very brave and bold decision to open a saleroom in Dubai, and after that inaugural auction we never doubted the spirit of the collectors and the excellence of the artists’ work,” said global president, Jussi Pylkkänen. “It is thanks to them that we have broken more than 400 artist records in the last decade, making a tangible contribution to the transformation of this market. “The Dubai auctions in March are now recognised as an integral part of the global art market calendar. All eyes will have been on the success of the 10th anniversary sales here in the Middle East as we move to our sales in New York, Hong Kong and London later this season.” So which items attracted the most money from investors? We take a look at the three biggest sales made.

THE FINAL PAGE fit for a rolling stone

EXECUTIVE LIFE|The Final Page

Introducing the exclusive five-piece limited edition of the Academy Christophe Colomb by Zenith

In an historical event on the international rock’n’roll scene, the legendary Rolling Stones gave a milestone performance in Cuba on 25 March 2016. And to mark this concert, Zenith has unveiled an exclusive limited edition timepiece dedicated to the partnership it has had with the British band since 2014. The enamel dial of the Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to The Rolling Stones is spectacular. Its generous 45mm-diameter rose gold case is topped by a domed sapphire crystal, while the famous Rolling Stones logo – topped by a dedicated display for the 50-hour power reserve – appears to burst out of the base adorned with the British flag. Now an instantly recognisable symbol of rock, the ‘licking tongue’ with its red lips framing was designed in 1970 by the artist John Pasche to express the rebellious spirit of the Stones.

Hand-engraved Roman numerals mark the quarter-hours on the offset time display, while the small seconds tick by at the centre of the intersecting, overlaid crosses on the Union Jack flag. The timepiece is powered by a movement combining two mechanisms: a regulating organ with a high oscillating frequency (36,000 vibrations per hour) dividing up time into tenth-of-a-second segments, and a patented Gravity Control gyroscopic module that neutralises the effects of gravity on the rate of the watch. Each Academy Christophe Colomb Tribute to The Rolling Stones is a one-of-a-kind model, to which a rubber-lined brown alligator leather strap with rose gold triple-folding clasp sets the perfect finishing touch. zenith-watches.com
