Exclusive Interview

Born and raised in Sydney how do you feel fashion trends in Australia differ from the rest of the world and why? Due to the Aussie climate I feel that Aus-

tralian fashion designers are not particularly bound by seasons. As a result, Aussie designers are able to use lighter fabrics and design more trans-seasonal garments.

Where is the most interesting place you have ever traveled? What inspires you most from this place? Italy! I just become Le Dolce Vita

when I am there. I am a huge fan of the ancient and modern history of Italy and am inspired by its people, buildings, art, museums and sculptures.

You had the opportunity to work with Carla Zampatti. What was the most valuable lesson you learned from this experience? “Fashion is a busi-

ness and must be treated that way. The design is only one component, all other areas of the business are equally important. You must understand this in order to be successful in this industry.” Carla Zampatti

What was your biggest fashion flop or disaster moment and how did you recover? On the night

before my first collection photo shoot I was pressing and cleaning the garments with my iPod blaring in the background. I just got a new puppy ‘Giorgio’ and forgot to close the door behind me. In horror I found Giorgio chewing the hem of a long silk gown. I initially screamed and nearly fainted! I was so lucky that I had made the dress super long. I stayed up til 3 am to re-hem the gown.

What are some of your favorite pieces of your newest Winter 2012 collection and why? The Military

Coats! I love tailoring and these coats truly show beautiful workmanship. The Eternity Drape dress and Grecain Goddess gown, these pieces show the use of the draping and also show incredible detail and craftsmanship. What were your inspirations for this Winter 2012 collection? I wanted to fuse both masculine and feminine

pieces, and contrast them with flowing light fabrics. My travels to New York really brought this concept out.

What advice would you give to an aspiring designer or young artist in the fashion industry?

I really believe that young designers should go out and work for other designers and learn as much as they can from the business. This will help them greatly when they eventually start their own line. Recently opening your first store in Sydney must have been very exciting! Where is it located? The

Showroom is located at the Goldsbrough Mort Hotel Arcade, 116 No, 243 Pyrmont Street, Darling Harbour.

What is the overall message you are trying to send with this brand?

Modern and uniquely made garments that exude style, quality and effortless elegance. 20

The name alone conjures images of a young woman, independent and free of all reservations, restraints and cares of the world. Confident yet modest; she stands amidst society with a smile, knowing that what she has is something uniquely unlike any other. With her toes buried deep in the sands of Byron Bay she emulates a spirit of dreams and with a slight touch or twist of hand she shapes these ideals into leather ... stamping her mark on your soul. 45
