SUBTLETY A PORTRAIT SERIES
PHOTOGRAPHED BY RAWLE C. JACKMAN IN FRAME: KENYA ANDERSON
SO LITTLE TIME SO MANY IMAGES...
I have had this quandary for quite some time now. At the end of a shoot I find myself with so many truly great images that oftentimes never see the light of day. Depending on the purpose of the shoot, one or two images can be all that is needed for the project. Other times a photo-book is printed, or maybe a few selected for framing or to be used as wall art. Essentially so much of the art is just not consumed. For this artist, this photographer, that can sometimes leave one feeling unfulfilled. For why have all this and it not be seen? Not be enjoyed or critiqued or teach? In today’s world digital photography has made it possible to create a lot. Not all good but nonetheless, myriad expressions of people’s creativity. What comes of all this excess? And how much of it can we truly consume? So we become selective and very discriminating and large bodies of work are whittled down to just a few of the best
images. I have attempted that here but I really like all of these images and feel that they should be seen. Hope you enjoy. Quick tip: Learn to use the equipment you have. Even the most basic of digital cameras today offer image quality and features not available 15, 20, 30 years ago and even then great images were being made. A good tool helps, but knowledge and skill can trump that in many cases. I shoot in manual mode and love natural light when possible. For this shoot I used the below settings. I usually keep the aperture and shutter fixed and adjust the ISO and exposure compensation accordingly for light. 50mm 1.8 lens @ 2.8 / ISO 400 - 800max / Shutter 1/125th iv
